How does iWeb 08 compaire to RapidWeave or Sandvox?

How does iWeb 08 compaire to RapidWeave or Sandvox? I am very concerned about iWeb having to reload everything each time, sort of like MicroSoft Publisher producing website. I am also concerned how that effects your Google rankings by putting all new pages up and it looks like I would have to reinstall my Google Analytics every time I update my website? If you can also recommend any site for compairing the three products I woud appreciate it.
Big Thanks
Martin

Martin — Sandvox is up to v.1.5, but you may find _these comments_ regarding Sandvox v.1.2.8 helpful. Also _these comments_ regarding RapidWeaver 4.

  • How does iWeb track files for incremental updates to .mac

In short, my question is where does iWeb keep track of which pages have been published to .mac so it can make perform an incremental update?
My father is in Alaska using iWeb 1.1.1 to maintain a blog and photo gallery that, when published to .mac, has grown to just over 100MB. His connection speeds vary from port to port, but are typically around 128k and cut out after a bit of use. The challenge now is that iWeb is trying to upload the entire site which is failing every time due to the internet connection.
While visiting him, I saved an identical domain.site file to my computer that I would like to publish using my high speed connection. Following this, my goal is to convince his version of iWeb that it has been updated without having to transfer the entire domain.site file and this is the part where I could use some help.
So far I have published my copy of the site. I have then tried emailing him copies of the files: index.xml.gz, assets.site.plist, ServerCachedResources.plist, sharedassets.plist, and com.apple.iweb.plist which I accessed using the show package contents on the domain.site file. He has transfered these to domain file however it still wants to upload the entire site. Are there any other ideas on where iWeb tracks pages for incremental updates?

  • How does iWeb handle packaged files. (Like Keynote files)

I'm going to be changing this site soon, but I wanted to check here before I did.
    Symbolic Representation
At the bottom of the page are two .key files for Keynote. When I dropped them onto iWeb, it shows them added as filename.key.zip but in the Domain file and in the file area on my iDisk, it shows as filename.key.
If you attempt to download them, one of two things happen. The file is downloaded as a .zip file, unarchived, .zip file sent to the trash then opened in Keynote
    OR
File is a .zip when it downloads, but only filename.key is shown making the user think the file is corrupt. If they add .zip to the end and double click, it will unarchive and you'll be able to open the file properly.
I was wondering if anyone else had run into this? Does this work consistently OR why wouldn't it work for some people?

I'm going to zip them soon to see if that solves the problem, but wanted to know how many people using OSX are seeing a problem now. So far, I've only had one person say they downloaded as corrupt .key files, everyone else can see them fine.
Just curious about the "why" so that if anyone else has this problem, I'll have more info
Either way I link it, the interface shows filename.key (even the rollover text after I create the page says filename.key), the URL area in the inspector shows filename.key.zip, and the file in the Domain file AND on the iDisk is filename.key.

  • How does iWeb make 160 movies 300 for web page?

This isn't iWeb, but rather how iWeb does this:
When I export my GB3 enhanced podcast to iWeb I get a webpage with a 300x300 pixel "movie"
But it looks like GB3 is just exporting 160x160. (is that right?) and then iWeb is doing something to change the display size.
I'm looking for the html that will let me use the GB3 160x160 image and have it display on 300x300 on a non-iWeb page I have already.

iWeb lets you adjust the size of any graphical element, including quicktime movies, to any size.

  • How does iWeb read the Domain package?

My MacBook is having stability problems. Along the way with its MANY crashes, it has lost its path to my iWeb domain.
The Domain package in the Application Support folder has its contents intact, but upon opening iWeb, the sites are missing, and there is no import feature. I also get a dialog box reading "Can't open the file "~/Library/ApplicationSupport/iWeb/Domain.sites."

OP? I'm not a newbie, but neither am I a true geek...Pygmalion, I guess. Anyway, please help with the term.
This happened before upgrading to 1.1.2, which I only just did today. I also tried dragging the domain to the trash, then allowed iweb to rebuild. It rebuilt a nothing file. I returned the old "full package deal" domain.
Before iweb failed, MS Office apps began crashing, freezing on saves or attempts to print. Soon other apps were crashing on save. Then the iweb mystery occurred. All this since the last week in August when I got this MacBook for my classroom. Add to that the new third Mac Mini in that time period (the third is no longer turning on the display at all, but I'm out of fix-it time) and you're looking a a woman who is ready to become a luddite!
I've kept all this under my hat at work, lest I provoke the real luddites. But that make's solutions finding (and venting) lonely. Hopefully someone here will have a brilliant solution...soon!
Perhaps Apple should hire me as their quality assurance controller. If it passes my golden touch, their returns would be WAY down!

  • How does iWeb access images?

Where are the website images stored? I entered an HTML snippet but it includes images.  The html lists the images as menu.images.whatever..  I need to know how to modify the code and where to put the images.  There is also a css style.  How do I make such a snippet work?

Hi Victoria and welcome to the forum.
I had to Google Shape but it looks interesting, and dies use the CC Libraries.  I am a big fan of CC Libraries, but have only used them between apps on the same machine.  So it is just a matter of see how they work between different systems
Illustrator Help | Creative Cloud libraries - collaborate, sync, and share assets
In my experience, I simply drag an asset onto the Library in one app, and it is there in my other apps.  But I have to make sure I am looking at the same library name on both computers.  Now I have been confused over syncing before, but I suspect that if you open the Application Manager and click on the little Cog icon, and in the Files tab make sure Sync is checked.  Otherwise you might as well read the help files.

  • How does Blogger compare to iWeb 09, and starting tips?

I've never had a blog site, but I would like to start one, with an 'About me', posts, and comment ability that I can handle. Some have recommended opening a free site with Blogger. Now that I have iWeb 09 (3.0.1, still unopened) and a MobileMe account, I'd like to ask:
    1) How does iWeb compare to Blogger (or any other blogging software)
    2) What should I know before starting a blog with iWeb?
    Best regards, Isshi.

If you use one of the industrial strength blogging sites that have been suggested here you might be able to add it to an iWeb page using an HTML snippet and iFrame code as in this demo page: Embed One Site Within an iWeb Page.

  • How does Muse compare to Apple's iWeb?

    I just heard about Muse.
How does Muse compare to Apple's iWeb?
Is it a similar type of user experience?
Is it more or less versitile?

I just migrated from iWeb to Muse.
I've run my very small but well-established business in iWeb for almost 5 years and I was so sad to see Apple cut off iWeb. It worked super-well for my needs.
I looked around and chose Muse because I could build what I wanted without being hemmed in by a template. In every other program I tried I either had to live life in a template or know how to code. I just wanted mine to be a simple straight-forward website that harmonized with my content. My followers don't need or want or like a lot of bells and whistles, they are interested in my content and in ease of navigating around.
I moved my iWeb site from mobileme to another server about 3 months ago and then two days ago began moving into my new Muse site.
In the last couple of days I have had about 600 or so of my followers find Muse and many have written to say they like my new site, that it loads fast for them and (as I suspected) they like that it is simple and easy to use.
Mind you, I have a TON of work to do before my move is complete, but so far it is all I hoped it would be. I wish it had a couple of features more (such as a way to collapse and store pages when I'm not working on them) but I'm hoping they'll come in the future.
Do I miss iWeb? Yes, because I knew how to run it so well and easily, but for my level of web participation Muse is a good replacement.
    Hope this helps.

  • Where does iweb store its gallery information?

In which file does iWeb store the information which allows it to construct a gallery page?
I have a site with a Gallery page, which I publish to a local folder, then upload to an ftp server for a live website (www.ayrmodelboatclub.org)
When I update the gallery by adding a new gallery page, iWeb updates the initial gallery menu page showing the little photobooks of all my galleries.
If I publish to a local folder, I can go to the gallery and double-click gallery.html which then displays the page correctly in my browser. If I upload the Gallery folder to the site, then go to the site and choose Gallery, it goes to an older version of the page. I can't see how that is possible, but I figured it must be because I have not updated a file which tells iWeb which gallery thumbnails to display on the page (or perhpas the number of thumbnails to display).
    I can't find that file.
I have tried updating Gallery.html an streamloader.html and Scripts and the Media folder.
I have also tried uploading the whole Gallery folder again (an again, and again) but can't get it to update.
I have had this problem time and again, on more than one site.
    What am I doing wrong?
If I set iWeb to update the site directly, it creates a folder within the site, called AMBC (the name of the site within iWeb) and that functions perfectly, but because it is a folder within the main site directory, it adds AMBC to the addresses, so anyone who has bookmarked the pages can't see then because the address has changed.
If I delete all the files on the server, except the functioning AMBC folder, then take everything out of the AMBC folder and put it at the top level, that fixes the addresses, but the old version of the Gallery now displays instead. I think it may not be the old version, but may be simply the wrong number of thumbnails that are being displayed and iWeb is reding one too few thumbnails. But where is that information stored?
I'd appreciate any help with this. It's driving me daft.

I just went through this with a GoDaddy site. I think I am on the track to the answer, since the site is now working correctly. There are a couple of areas where failure to update occurs that I have found so far. iWeb saves all it data in a single file called domain. It has a default location but you can move it and have several 'domain' files for separate sites. Iweb will default to the last used domain file. Just double click on the one you want to use.
    The main concept:
On your computer the file can be loaded properly, but on the web it is wrong. Remember, that when the HTML is written out by iWeb, it creates a name_files folder and puts stuff in there. The name_files may be in a different relative location from its location on your computer.
In iWeb you set up the location of your site to publish to. Remember that it creates the site each time, so you actually select the location above your 'Name' site in the hierarchy, which is often 'Sites' on a Mac. So don't choose 'Name' as your location, chose 'Sites.' The links will work within the 'Name' location but will not work if a link strays outside that location after you publish it. If you publish to 'Name' then your new site will be 'Name' inside your already published 'Name' site. When you look at the site you may not realize that although you can see the new file in a location similar to the location on your Mac, the file that is linked to by your published page will be the one inside the Name_files folder on the top level of your host site, not inside a folder which is inside a folder....
If you FTP, then in iWeb, choose publish entire site rather than publish changes, and drag the entire site to the upload window of your FTP client, and replace all the old files. If you don't want to do that, then if you are using an FTP client such as Transmit, you can actually rename the old files on the server and keep them as backups. You can also drag files around on the server directly, but you will break any links to them in any old pages that are not updated.
Probably something I explained is wrong, but my GoDaddy site is updating properly anyway. :-D At first I was copying the corrections into every name_files folder on the GoDaddy site, until I realized that iWeb would do that for me properly if I published everything and replaced everything.
Sorry I am confused about this myself!

  • How does the hit counter work?

    hi
a while ago i made a web site with a hit counter on it
i wrote the hit counter using php and a flat text file to store the number of hits
i experienced a number of problems
    1. if someone visited the site more than once, the hit counter would go up each time they visited. this is not really desired as i really only want to know how many unique hits i get
    2. web bots and web crawlers would also make the counter go up
does the hit counter that iweb generates suffer from this problem?
how does it work - from total hits or only unique hits?
does anyone know it web crawlers effect the counter?
    thanks!

It is a hit counter and will register even when you visit the website.
I found this annoying, so I ditched the iWeb hit counter and went to Bravenet and downloaded a visit counter instead. You can customise your design and can have a visit counter instead of a hit counter and you can also set it to ignore your own hits - so if you want to visit your site to see how it looks it won't register your hit. The hit counter will register each time and for every page, whereas a visit counter will just register the visit to the first page and then thats it. If you use Bravenet it will give you stats too.
I am sure you can get hit counters and visit counters from lots of other sources though.

  • How does apple want me to create a DVD to play on my DVD player from iMovie? iDVD did not come with my iMac.

I have created several home movies in imovie and am now ready to burn them to DVDs that family members can play on their DVD players. How am I supposed to do this? iDVD did not come with my imac. How does apple want us to do this? Thanks.

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it, and how do I install it?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. Some purchasers of new iMacs have reported that if you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone to Apple, they may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. As there is no satisfactory substitute for iDVD Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
It is worth noting that the version of iDVD 7 included with iLife 11 only includes themes from iDVD 5-7. If you want all the older themes you should buy iLife 9, which has the same version of iDVD 7 but with all the themes, and none of the iDVD 7 updaters available from Apple Downloads contain them.
Currently the only certain way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-21006826-20751 4/Installer001.jpg
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-21006826-20748 0/Pacifist001.jpg
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
But even though you can still buy iLife 9 or 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
When you try to install iDVD you may see a notice come up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March 2012, because Apple have withdrawn the license to it can no longer be used.
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After installing iDVD reset the time back to the correct time on your Mac.
You may be to use able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  Just click on the Continue button and it should work as expected, but for some it will not continue unless the date is  set back.
    Additional comments:
Apple has clearly indicated in the newest iMacs, Mac mini and Retina Display MacBook Pro that it plans to phase out optical disc drives as soon as possible across the board, providing an external USB drive as an option for users who need one but which is not universally compatible with all Macs.
Users increasingly have fewer opportunities to use optical drives, as the bulk of third party software is now available as a digital download either directly from the vendor or through Apple's App Store. but not all. Apple also sees digital distribution as the future of music and movies, as exemplified in Apple TV, which has never included an optical drive.
The company has never supported any new HD optical disc formats on its products, including Microsoft's ill fated HD-DVD or Sony's Blu-ray format, despite initially being involved in the Blu-ray standardization process. Instead, Apple has put its resources behind developing increasingly higher definition audio and video formats that it can distribute electronically through its own iTunes Store.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their latest Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.
The latest anorexic iMacs do not even include a CD drive (or Firewire)! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of optical media - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?
