How does Lion performance compare to SL on 4gb "late 2010" MBA?

I'm getting my ducks in order to upgrade my MBA ("late 2010 model") from Snow Leopard to Lion. I have the 4gb model.
An Apple Tech person said that he was holding off from doing this upgrade on his own MBA because Lion is really slow on a MBA with only 4gb (which is the max.).
What has been your experience with Lion on a MBA?
And, with Mt. Lion so close do you think that is going to be better? (or worse??) Should I wait for 10.8?
Thanks!

I'm using the 2010 model with that same SSD. It's easier to replace than a standard hard drive as there's only a single screw holding it in. It's literally maybe a 5 minute job. Take the screws off the base... pop the cover off.... take the screw out holding in the SSD and remove it from the slot.
I haven't had any problems.
Thanks for this info. I think I'll give it a shot.
I haven't looked in a while, so there may be something out there now that will let you use the SSD in an external enclosure (there wasn't back when I did the swap).
The OWT site now offers an enclosure. [see: OWC Mercury On-The-Go USB 3.0/2.0 External Enclosure for Apple MacBook Air 2010 & 2011 Flash Storage Item Number: OWCSSDAPOTGU3]
That was one thing that helped make this idea attractive (hate to waste a perfectly good drive!!). They even sweeten the deal by offering the enclosure half price if you buy it when you purchase the SDD (making the enclosure around $36).

• I have leopard and want to upgrade to lion. I have a macbook about 3 years old and wonder if I should just get a new macbook pro ($$$) instead. Is it worth the headache to upgrade to snow leopard and then lion? How does lion perform on an intel core duo 2

I have a macbook about 3 years old running leopard. I amwondering ifitwouldbeworth the trouble to install snowleopardand then lion ($60.00) or just buy a new macbook pro ($$$$$$). How does lion perform on an intel core 2 duo processor?

I have Lion installed on a Mini with a C2D processor. The same Mini has Snow Leopard on another partition and there is no noticeable difference in operational speed between the two OS's. But compared to my new MBPro 17" with a 2.83GHz i7, the Mini running Lion is noticeably slower. So if you can afford anew MBPro, then I would get it because you will probably be unhappy with the performance of Lion on the older MBPro. The other benefit of getting a new MBPro with Lion is that if you have any Power PC applications currently on the old MBPro, which will not operate in Lion, then you still have the ability to use them. Many users got stung by upgrading to Lion, only to find they could no longer use the older PPC applications.

• How does one perform mailbox to mailbox moving of email messages w/ Messaging 3.X?

How does one perform mailbox to mailbox moving of email messages with Messaging 3.X?

In an ISP environment there are times that a user changes his
login name (his unique identifier in the ISP's network, also used as
his email address) from one value to another. It is very convenient
for the ISP to be able to move messages from the user's old mailbox
to the user's new mailbox when this situation occurs.

With Messaging Server 2.0, this was easily accomplished by simply
moving the mail messages on disk. However, with the added complexity
of Messaging 3.0 where there are back links, reference counts, etc.,
associated with mail messages, moving files on disk from one mailbox
to another is no longer valid.

The MoveUser utility, which is new in MS 3.X, moves messages from
one messaging server to another or from one maildrop path to another.
Can this utility be used to move messages from one mailbox to another?

The answer is yes, it can. The user should be aware that if
duplicate email message id's exist in the mailbox before the
move, the messages related to the duplicate message id's will
be duplicated in the target mailbox.

See the online documentation contained with the product or the
Messaging 3.X Administrator's Guide for exact syntax.

Hi
If I understand you correctly and if you are using Apple Mail version 2.0 or above navigate to /Users/Home folder. The Home folder is the one with the house icon, within that folder you will see a Library folder, within that folder you’ll see a Mail folder, within that folder you’ll see a folder that begins with POP followed by your name, within that folder will be a folder called INBOX.mbox, within that folder is a Messages folder. All the mail that you see within the application are there. They will be numbered and have a file suffix of .emlx. You can move these wherever you like.
If you are using Entourage X, or Entourage 2004 you can easily multiple select mail messages, addresses etc from within the application and drag whatever you’ve selected to wherever you like.

• How does CEF perform equal and unequal cost load balancing?

hello
How does CEF perform equal and unequal cost load balancing?
thanks

Hello Wang,
it is only EIGRP that can perform load balancing over unequal cost links.
For equal cost links CEF allocates 16 buckets and maps them to the the physical links.
the result of a binary operation is used to associated a packet to an outgoing interface:
Source IP address EXOR DEstination IP Address EXOR hash
the hash is a seed that changes only at every reload.
Actually the last 4 bits are used so that each flow can be classified in one bucket.
then the outgoing interface is the one asscociated to the result of the exor operation.
Another way to see is that m bits are used so that 2^m is equal to N number of links (if N is even)
the rule is simple and pre-established
Hope to help

• How does lion work with logic 9.1.4?

how does lion work with logic 9.1.4?

Greetings,
So far, everything seems as stable as before. Which doesn't actually mean its rock solid, but otherwise workable. I'm running a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24DSP with beta audio drivers. So far, everything is running well. I decided to jump into the 64bit work environment with Logic. I have yet to encounter huge problems with the 32bit audio bridge. Just making sure I bounce everything that is 32bit.
As for everything else within Logic, I can't say I hate Lion. Matter of fact, Lion seems buggier than Logic at the moment. Logic handles well in Lion, but Lion on its own overall is a different can of worms. I am mixed about a 10.7.1 update. Usually, it fixes something on the OS, but breaks something else in Logic.
I have faith that Lion will turn out to be as solid as Snow Leopard. SL was my favorite OSX so far. Lion still leaves allot to be desired in terms of stability.
Again, answer to your question: for me, Logic and Lion play nice.............for now.

• Hello... can anyone help, my late 2010 MBA's - OS X Lion 10.7.5 wifi won't turn on after a deep sleep

can anyone help, my late 2010 MBA's - OS X Lion 10.7.5 wifi won't turn on after a deep sleep.. thanks..!

Hi John,
Thanks for the additional information. What I would try next is resetting System Management Controller:
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find the full article here:

If this still doesn't help, it would be time to take it in to be looked at. You can setup an appointment at a Genius Bar by clicking on the following link:

• How does the x300 compare to ultraportables today?

I am thinking about getting a refurbished x300 to replace my T60. How does it compare to today's ultra-portables with regard to performance? My T60 certainly have trouble watching 1080p youtube videos, I guess I can expect the same from the x300?

performance of the X300 and X301 is way behind the current ultrabook.
X301's Intel 4500MHD GPU was designed for 1080p videos, while the X300's intel X3100 is not designed for these.
As such the X300 will lag with these 1080p videos.

• How does one perform Cursor joins in DPL?

How does one navigate the API to do cursor joins? Can one do it and still exploit DPL concepts, or must one keep open a separate low-level BDB Database?

Hi Jdf,
Since you said "cursor joins" I assume you are familiar with the base BDB API that provides joins via cursors. In DPL the same functionality is provided by using the EntityJoin class. Instead of cursors, you specify the secondary key values, but the result is the same. An underlying cursor join is performed for you.

• How does Vision Film compare to SkyMovies (premier...

It looks like Vision Box Office ppv films are much the same as Sky Box Office (now "Store"), but how does the free Vision Film channel compare to Sky Movies Premier? From looking at the listings it would seem that VF is some way behind Sky Premier, which means a massive gap between when films are on Box Office until they're on VF.
My reason for asking is that I generally only watch the new releases, and currently on Sky I'm happy to watch on Premier rather than paying for Sky Store as they're not too far behind (and still massively ahead of what Lovefilm can offer). From a brief view of the Vision Film listings, I can see that I'd end up buying films from Vision Box Office instead of waiting.
An alternative would have been the NOW TV subscription, but its ludicrously in SD not HD, and they've stated no plans to move to HD on YouView (only Xbox). So no way I'd pay £15pcm for SD films.

The movies on VF are not as new as the releases on Sky or NowTV. But even if you had NowTV the films listed on their website may not actually be on Youview for licencing reasons and may only appear on other formats.
If you want the latest movies without having to pay after they have been on box office then you may as well use Sky - if you are willing to wait for them to be released on VF then go with BT.
Also if you have the unlimited package for Vision, then you get a choice of approx 250 movies, loads of tv series and music videos included. BT stream some movies in HD, which NowTV don't and nor do Sky (you have to download films first with Sky).
Also remember to get the premiers, etc on Sky, you pay a premium for it, compared to the monthly cost of BT Youview or BT Vision

• How does Macbook Pro compare to G4/800 Powermac

I currently have a G4/800 Quicksilver Powermac with 1Gb of memory, two 7200rpm hard drives, and a ATI RAdeon 7500 GPU with 32Mb of RAM.
I mainly use my computer for amateur photograph editing (Photoshop elements) and video-editing (imovie and Final cut express), and I play the occasional game (older games like wolfenstein, medal of honor, warcraft 3). I've read a lot on this forum about how crappy the GMA in the macbook is, but to give me an idea, how does it compare to my equally crappy ATI radeon 7500 ? Would the macbook be ok to play games like C&C generals, Homeworld 2 and other 3D strategy games ? I like the occasional 3D shooter but I don't need the graphical splendour of Quake 4. And I've read that Final Cut pro has some issues with the macbook but I suppose Final cut express would be ok ?
How would the 2Gh Macbook compare to my G4 Quicksilver speedwise overall (I would max out the ram in the macbook) ?
G4/800 QS - G3/400 Pismo PB Mac OS X (10.3.9)
G4/800 QS - G3/400 Pismo PB Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I dunno your asking a MBP question in the MacBook
forum.
Try asking in the correct forum.
If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that the MBP
would be faster then the QS on all accounts even when
running photoshop (which would run under rosetta).
The G4 has faster drives going for it, but overall
the MBP specs are superior to the g4 so my vote is
that yuor going to see an improvement. The only
suggestion I'd give is boost the ram to at least a
gig and your doing a lot of photoshop work, then get
1.5 to 2.0 gig.

Sorry, I actually meant the Macbook.

• How Does iTunes AAC Compare to Amazon MP3?

I haven't had an opportunity to try Amazon's MP3 downloads but did note that they are cheaper for selections across the board. They advertise that the MP3s are 256K which would seem better than the 128K AAC that iTunes offers. I was just wondering how the Amazon tracks compare to the standard DRM iTunes tracks in terms of quality? I do like iTunes Plus tracks which are virtually indistinguishable from a CD to me. However, until iTunes can get all the tracks upgraded to the Plus standard (256K AAC), I was thinking of just purchasing from Amazon. Opinions?

I have already purchased a large number of songs/albums from Amazon as I have found things on Amazon that aren't available in iT Plus versions in the store. For me, I can tell a huge difference between Amazon files & the standard 128 protected files from the iTunes store. I find the difference to be indistinguishable between the iT Plus files & Amazon. I use Bose Companion 5 speakers on my computer & Shure SE310 earphones on my Classic, so the 128 files are very noticeable. Hope this helps.

• How does mac mini compare to PPC G5?

My company runs PowerPC G5s dual 2GHz/1GB RAM OS 10.4.11. We are looking to upgrade to CS5 which requires Intel Macs and we don't need the expansion capability of a tower, we recently purchased new 24" LaCie monitors, so we don't need monitors -- how do the mac minis compare? We use QuarkXPress, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, MSOffice, Entourage, FileMaker Pro.
I'm considering the 2.66GHz/8GB RAM/320HD -- don't need alot of internal storage because we are on a Windows network.

I replaced my 2004 PowerMac G5 dual 2Ghz with a Mac mini server and it's been great. I got the most recent server with two internal hard drives and set them up as a RAID stripe. I added an external blu-ray player / dvd burner. It worked out to be a better bargain that way. I couldn't find the benchmarks I recorded at the time but you can browse the geekbench results which is always helpful. They show 1734 for your G5 while the mini is scored at 3634 so that is twice as fast! Geekbench only measures CPU and doesn't account for graphics performance. The mini does use shared memory but I've not found it to be a problem. I really like the mini's ultra low power usage compared to the G5.
You still get dual threads but an iMac would be much better in terms of threads but I know you'd rather use your monitors. Cost vs performance the iMac is a much better deal, I actually got an iMac but returned multiple due to the 'yellow tinge' problem and decided to get the mini instead. Apple may put a newer Core chip in on the next mini refresh which would likely double the performance.
