How does manual wifi vs. wifi-protected setup differ

I setup my wifi router manually.  When I turn on MAC filtering if gives me a warning that I cannot use "wifi-protected" setup.
1) How does manual wifi vs. wifi-protected setup differ?
2) Why does using a manual configuration with MAC Filtering (Allow List) lockout wifi-protected setup?
Thank you,
Ed S.

Hi edspyhill09. Yes, it will disable Wifi protected setup because you are trying to filter the Mac addresses of the devices that you want to connect to your network. Only those mac addresses that  are listed can connect to your network so it defeats the purpose of having WiFi protected setup enable. WiFi protected setup lets users to connect multiple devices to the network and enable data encryption by pushing a button which is most of the time on the front panel or some of them is in the back panel labeled WPS. But WPS doesn't apply to all devices because some gadgets are not WPS capable, only those devices that are WPS capable can take advantage of this feature. Manual wifi is the conventional way of connecting to your wifi network. You look for the network name ssid and connect to it, if it ask for a password, then just type in the password and voila! You're now connected to your wifi network. Hope this helps you out!

  • WRT54G2 v1 fv1.0.04 stuck in wifi protected setup? /unable to switch to manual

I just upgraded the firmware on a WRT54G2 v1 from firmware v1.0.00 to v1.0.04.  More or less everything was working fine before the upgrade.  I was surprised that it held most of the old settings, including the wireless settings.
The execpton is the problem, it now wants to run wifi protected setup.  I have always set this to manual.  Specifically under wireless>>basic wireless settings it shows two radio buttons in 'wireless configuration':  'manual' and 'wi-fi protected setup', the latter is clicked.  If I click 'manual' it brings up a message with a generic complaint stating that several wireless security settings are not compatible with wi-fi protected setup (including WEP, which is the current setting).  Fortunately my wireless security settings are acutally unchanged.
FYI, the box is remote, so I have not physically touched it.
How do I set 'wireless configuration' to MANUAL ?
    Thanks for your help.

OK, all I needed to do was reset to the factory defaults and then reconfigure.   Apparently the combination of old settings and default settings for new features put the unit a conflicting state.  --Lloyd

  • Does iPhone support WiFi Protected Setup?

I'd like to connect this new iPhone up to my WiFi and retain the same security (WPA2) I'm using with my other clients.

  • How do you connect an IPod touch 3rd generation to wifi using wifi protected setup?

    Hi all.
I have an IPod Touch 3rd Generation using software 5.0.1 that I am trying to connect to my wifi.  I just got a Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway router (model #DPC3825 if any of that matters).  It's default setup is wifi protected setup which invovles the pushing the button on the router or entering a pin.  I cannot find any pin on the router nor can I find anyway to enable something on the IPod for the push button.  Any advice on how to get this connected?  Is there an app I have to download or a setting I need to change?
    Thanks

I have that same model modem.  Here is the user guide for that modem as mentioned by lllaasss above.

  • WRT54G2 Hangs at 99% on "WiFi Protected Setup"

Hello. I hit the wifi protected setup button on my router, now every time I try to navigate to the "wireless" tab in the web-based configuration screen a frame comes up that says
    "Searching for your client device.
    Please wait...
If you haven't clicked on the Wi-Fi Protected Setup button on your client device, please do so now.
    99%"
and it hangs on 99% forever, with no way to cancel it. Is there any way to cancel this WITHOUT doing a hard reset of the router?
As a temporary workaround, I used "View -> Page Style -> No page style" in firefox so i could select manual setup and save the settings, but even with manual setup checked (and the ability to successfully configure wireless settings with the style sheet turned off), the
    "Searching for your client device.
    Please wait...
If you haven't clicked on the Wi-Fi Protected Setup button on your client device, please do so now.
    99%"
frame still pops up with the basic page style turned on (thus every option is unclickable), and is still visible with the CSS turned off.
There is no option to cancel setup, and any other topic on this support forum just recommends a hard reset.
Is there any other way to deal with this other than a hard reset?
Will this be fixed in a future firmware version?
This is pretty problematic because without a "Wifi Protected Setup" client device, the router seems to be stuck in some sort of infinite loop with no way to break out of it.
    Thank you.

So, essentially, Wifi Protected Setup is a feature so broken that it requires a complete factory reset? How is there not a warning about this above the button in the middle of the router?
I set up the security manually in the first place. Because of linksys's poor design, it's more convenient for me to just remove style sheets when I view the setup page so I can actually change options instead of resetting the entire router. Why is there not an option to cancel the Wifi Protected Setup?
Would your solution to a leaky faucet be to demolish the whole house and rebuild it? If there was a typo in your post, would you erase the whole thing and type it all out again?
I read the other posts on this subject before I posted. I specifically asked in my post if there was any way other than a hard reset and if it would be fixed in a future firmware revision. Those were my questions. I already have a temporary workaround that gets what I need done without me losing all the options I have set.
    When will this be fixed?

  • Iphone & wifi protected setup

the current models of airport extreme supports features of wifi protected setup, namely you can add clients (like my trendnet usb key) to the airport extreme by pin number. (i never got "first attempt" to work)
i am wondering if iphones can connect to airport extreme this way of joining my encrypted network or am i going to find some way of copying and pasting the wpa2 passphrase into the iphone and pasting it to the wifi configuration.
i assume when i get my first iphone i will have to put the wifi key in notes (in mail) and sync it to itunes and paste the wifi key from there.
i also assume i will be able to sms myself the passphrase, copy it, and paste it to the wifi configuration
but i was also wondering if the iphone or any other apple client devices supporting joining a airport extreme by "adding wireless clients" feature in
    airport utility

  • Wifi Protected Setup (WPS)

    I recenty bought WAP4410N Wireless-N Access Point:
    Firmware: 2.0.0.5
It has a feature I never saw in prior Linksys WAPs I bought in the past. That feature is "Wifi Protected Setup"! I have two questions about this feature:
    1) What is the purpose of the WPS?
    2) How can I disable this feature?
I appreciate your knowledge and help!

WPS will cause a wireless client that supports WPS (Vista supports it and XP does not) to request a PIN to be entered in order to connect to the wireless network. You can find the appropriate PIN on the Wifi Protected Setup Screen on the WAP4410N. On the client when the request comes up you can click a link on the bottom of the screen that will allow you to connect without entering the PIN. However, for your firmware version there is a work around that will keep the WAP from requesting the PIN in the first place.
    Workaround:
    1.       Factory default the Access Point.
    2.       When setting up the Wireless, “Do not change” SSID 1.
    3.       Enter the desired SSID Name under “SSID 2”.
    4.       Check the “enable” box for SSID 2.
    5.       Uncheck the “enable” box for SSID 1.
    6.       Make any other changes to the mode, or channel, and then save settings.
    7.       Check the Wi-Fi Protect Setup page; it should still say “Unconfigured”.
Note:  As long as you do not change the Name of SSID 1, Wi-Fi Protect will remain “Unconfigured” and will not ask for a pin number when trying to connect.

  • WRT310Nv2 Wifi protected setup hangs on 99% HELP!

So I was going to portfowardmy router to make a server on a game called Minecraft, and when I went to my routers page, this popped up:
    Searching for your client device...
    Please wait.
If you haven't clikced on the Wifi Protected Setup on your device, please do so now.

I tryed upgrading the firmware, but you have to acess that page to do so, and with that box up, you can't.
    Any solutions besides resetting?

Press and hold the reset button in back for 30 seconds and release.  Wait 10 seconds and power cycle the router.  connect via wired computer to 192.168.1. username blank, password 'admin'.  Reconfigure the router from scratch.  Do NOT hit the WPS button on the front of the router and ALWAYS select manual for your wireless settings.

  • BT Wireless ac usb dongle 900 wifi protected setup...

Hi, I've just installed my new USB dongle for my hub5, the BT ac usb dongle 900.
After installing the software I plugged it in and clicked finish as instructed. I then connected to my hub5 by typing in the password as normal, and it's all connected fine.
But then a box popped up saying 'WiFi Protected Setup, In progress please wait'. If I cancel or leave it, it says 'error please try again' and then retries.
If I go and press my WPS button, it says 'success, connected to the router' and then when I click OK it still retries and pops up again!
I've tried rebooting and even uninstalling and reinstalling the software! What is going on this is rediculous! I've used loads of wifi dongles in the past, who even tests this software?
How can I stop it continually popping this box up?
    thanks for your time.

  • WRT600N and WiFi Protected Setup?

    All,
When the Wrt600N came out, it was said that the "Reserved" button would be enabled by a future firmware upgrade to support WiFi Protected Setup.
Surely in the three or so years this has come to pass.
Does anyone have a link to information on using WPS with the WRT600n?
    Many thanks.

I believe Cisco is still working on it until this time. I've found a link from their KB about WPS vulnerability. You might want to check it out, http://homekb.cisco.com/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=3bccc46248f9417b909e2c1028f6778e_WPS.xml&pid=80&r....

  • PLE400, PLW400, and network printer WIFI Protected Setup issues

    Hi
Okay, I have a Linksys EA4500 wireless router with the PLE400 and PLW400 wireless extenders installed in my house. I set the extenders up using the Cisco Powerline AV Utility by following the directions (Same keyword shared, PLW400 password entered in) and it increased the range of my router effectively. However, ever since I installed the PLE400 and PLW400 I can no longer get WIFI Protected Setup to work on any of my wireless printers. I have two Brother HL-2270DW wireless printers that stopped working when I installed the extenders and cannot be connected to the router since then using the WIFI Protected Setup. What the heck?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I held down the reset buttons for 10 seconds on the PLE400 and the PLW400 then set them back up and still had the problem. Then I thought maybe there are firmware upgrades available. Lo and behold there are so I upgraded the firmware on the PLE400 and the PLW400. Now everything works just fine. >.<

  • E2000 Wifi Protected Setup Vulnerability

I am concerned about the Wifi Protected Setup vulnerability. The E2000 is running as a wireless bridge behind a hardwire router to allow wifi devices in my network. I have WPA2 Personal enabled with a strong password, as well as MAC Address Filtering, but I still have the concern of someone being able to spoof a MAC and crack the WPS. Is there a way to completely disable this router's WPS ability, so that the only way to connect to the router is to know the password? WPS has been found to be very easy to crack and it's nothing to capture wifi packets and determine the MAC address of authorized devices. What advice can you give me? Is there a version of the firmware that allows WPS to be disabled? I am unable to find firmware updates for this device. Or is there a different firmware that will work for this device and allow WPS to be disabled?
Thanks in advance for your advice and help with this issue.

^^^ The WPS issue has nothing to do with Remote Management on of off.  Not the same problem.

  • How does my wife prevent daughter using her itunes account?

my wife logged into the itunes store to on my daughter's pc to make/authorise a purchase on her behalf. subsequently she has found that my daughter has the ability to make further (unauthorised) purchases on her pc using my wife's itunes account details. how does one break this connection without affecting any already authorised purchases in my daughters itunes library?
    dell dimension   Windows XP

Go back to your daughter's computer and sign out of your wife's account. (it'll show the account name at the top right corner of the iTunes store window, click the account name and then hit Sign out).
If she knows your password too, change the account password.
It'd probably be best to setup a monthly allowance for your daughter, that way she can only buy $X per month as you designate.
    Hope this helps!

  • How does my wife access this with a different ID

How can my wife access iMatch using a different ID on her iPad?  She is not able to get the music I have loaded in iCloud.

She doesn't. iTunes Match is designed to be a single-user service that is not sharable. It is associated with one, and only one, iTunes Store account. To access your music your wife will have to sign into the iTunes Store with your account ID and stay signed in.
Also keep in mind that iTunes Match and iCloud are not the same thing. The two services are distinct services and one does not require the other.

  • How does manual fetching of google contacts and calendar work?

In an effort to possibly save some battery life and/or just use the product as intended I would like to know how this works exactly.    At this point I only have two email accounts I use.  Yahoo and GMail, with GMail being my primary account.  Gmail is the only calendar option I use as well.
I don't add contacts often, nor do I make tons of calendar entrys every day.  So when I look into the settings for mail, contacts and calendar, then fetch new data (which shows push as on, which I want) and then advanced, the only two things listed on the fetch schedule are google calendar and google contacts.  iCloud and Yahoo mail are listed as push.
So can I set the fetch schedule to manual as opposed to hourly (the longest setting) due to the fact that I am not in constant need or hourly need really of updates to either?  Or will calendar notifications fail to show up on time and all my contacts disappear or something?
Battery life or not, if I could have both be "push" I would, as it seems counterintuitive not to, but so does manually looking out every hour for changes to something that likely hasn't changed.

Going to reply to myself on this one, I tryed switching everything to manual fetch today, and at least with respect to contacts, it appears to only go out and sync when the contacts are opening (ie I saw the spinning wheel and watched a contact I had made while in airplane mode on the phone show up online).  So I think that it would work the same for calendar entrys.
