My son has a balance on iTunes from a gift card, we have added family sharing to our devices and now we can't seem to use his gift card for his purchases. How do I fix this?

Regarding redeeming the gift card to the child's account, it is the same as redeeming to yours. You have to be signed in to the iTunes store using the child's apple ID, then redeem the gift card there. If you already redeemed the card on your ID, you won't be able to redeem it again.

Do you have the card? If it has never been redeemed, the amount remaining is the full amount.
If it has been redeemed, there is zero value on the card.
If it was redeemed, the full amount was credited to the account, and can be spent down from there. To see your remaining credit balance, log into the iTunes Store and look at the upper right.
If you are not sure whether the card has been redeemed, just go ahead and try to redeem it. If it has already been used, iTunes will tell you.

You might just have to contact Apple and ask them to remove it (losing it). Usually people clear a balance by buying one song and having the exact remainder charged to their credit card, but if you don't have a US credit card you cannot do that.

If it's not printed on the card, then you'll need to check the receipt from the purchase of the card. There's no way to check the value from the card itself without redeeming it.

Well its defintiely nothing that Apple can activate to fix this. They would be able to troubleshoot with you though. This may be able to be resolved if its something software related.

There isn't any expiration date on an iTunes gift card as far as I know. Once you redeem the card, it is added to your balance and it is good until the balance is depleted.

Some In-App Purchases works only with credit card.
