How does my MacPro compare with new iMacs spec wise?

I'm thinking of upgrading to a new iMac, I have a MacPro that is about 5-yrs old. Just curious, how do the specs on my MacPro compare with the specs available on the new iMacs? Will I notice a big difference in performance, OR are the upgrade processors and graphics card only going to result in minor performance increases?
Model Name:   Mac Pro
Model Identifier:     MacPro1,1
Processor Name:       Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed:      3 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores:        4
L2 Cache (per processor):     4 MB
Memory:       3 GB
Bus Speed:    1.33 GHz
Thanks!

I *think* you'll see a speed increase. You'll have more ram to start with, a faster bus, a faster graphics card, (i think) and on top of all of that a nicer screen, you'll be able to sell the mac pro to offset the cost, a bigger hard drive(probably) a new warranty.....and on and on. See why I say it's not so cut and dried?

  • Classic iPod does not appear compatible with newer iMac.

I have a fairly new iMac with iTunes. I am trying to sync an older version iPod Classic to iTunes on my iMac.  Everytime I plug into the iPod USB port, I get a warning window that states: Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled.
I then need to select OK.  I don't have any other USB ports connected.  And I am unable to sync the iPod.
I have all the latest and greatest updates, versions, etc.  Are the older iPods just not compatible with iMac?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

  • How does iMovie HD compare with iMovie 4?

I've just finished my first project using iMovie HD, and it seems okay. However, before I open any older projects from iMovie 4, thereby converting them, I would like to feel assured that I won't lose anything in the process?
Has anyone encountered problems switching over? Such as loss of special effects, synchronized sound, title font substitutions, or whatever?
Some of my projects were complicated, with lots of titles and effects and imported sounds. I could keep back-up copies in iMovie 4, I suppose, but that's a lot of disk space.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Hi there, David & David --
I'm not familiar with Slick GeeThree effects. Is that a component of iMovie 4 that I overlooked, or a plug-in?
The step-by-step procedure for importing iM4 into iMHD is VERY interesting. I notice the Save As command is new to iMovie, not included in iM4, which offered only a Save Frame As command that mystified me. In iMHD, the Save As command appears to create a smaller file that does not include the Media and Audio Waveforms folders. Evidently it maintains a link to those folders, suggesting they need to be kept on the same disk in order for the Saved As version to work properly. Is that true?
Your comments are all very helpful. I don't expect anyone to be aware of every possible glitch that may show up in the future, in any program, but it is reassuring to learn that iMHD has not shown any chronic ailments after months of use in the field.
    I really appreciate this information.

  • How does TomTom nav compare with Google nav?

If I switch from Android phone to iPhone what will the difference be in NAVS?

I switched from Android to iPhone a few months ago. Google navigation is what I missed the most -- that and integrated voice-to-text.  There are many navigation choices for the iPhone, but just two things to be aware of:
1- Some of the nav apps get the maps and points of interest from 3G download on the fly, some have this built into the app (which takes up more space on the phone). Getting the data from 3G is nice since it is more likely to be updated, and the app takes less space on your phone (note that Google nav gets its data via 3G).  The nav apps with all the map and POI data built in take more space, but you always have the data no matter where you are -- the apps that rely on 3G may not work if the data you need is not in their cache from the last time you had 3G service.  This can be a big deal if you need directions in areas with weak (or no) 3G service.
2- Some nav apps are much less expensive, but charge you a monthly fee.  Just be aware of that, although some may offer pay-as-you need service. Others (like Tom Tom, Navigon, etc.) have one price with no monthly fee, but they cost more.

  • How does aperture 2 compare with adobe lightroom?

I realize aperture 2 just came out but feedback from anyone with experience in both aperture 2 & adobe lightroom would be very much appreciated
    Message was edited by: apeOrLr

I own both (Aperture 1.5x) and I can say they both have some very nice features. I prefer working in Aperture when I can. Here are a couple of differences that I think are important.
LightRoom has no support for multiple monitors. This doesn't seem to bother some people, but it drives me nuts. I would love to have my a 1:1 or fit preview open on a second monitor while I'm working. Aperture is great at this. You may want to avoid LightRoom if that sounds like something you would want for your workflow.
Another thing I like in aperture is the highlight recovery looks much nicer to my eye.
Like William Lloyd mentioned there is a lot of pre Aperture 2 vs LR comparisons out there... they may give you a good start. I'm sure lots of folks will be rushing to write up comparisons or 2.0 vs LR soon.
    Good luck!

  • How does lightroom 4 deal with lossless compressed raw files

how does lightroom 4 deal with lossless compressed raw files

Ok, sorry about the vague question.  My concern is centered around a new camera purchase ( Nikon D810 ) which produces huge files.  I shoot in RAW and never use lossless compression only uncompressed RAW because of my conservative nature .  But now it looks like I will be using Lossless compressed to help deal with the file size.  So the question was based on fears of data lost.  Thanks for the replies, and they confirm what I already suspected. So now I can feel confident using lossless compression.
    Thanks

  • How does APEX create and save new files. What extension does it save in?

Hi can someone help me with this question?
How does APEX create and save new files. What extension does it save in?
    Cheers!
    VJ

It's really too bad we can't see VJ's face when the concept sinks in. This is one of my favorite moments when teaching APEX classes. Most people love it, some people don't. If nothing else it really proves the power and performance of the Oracle database. Each page view can generate 40+ queries, yet on the average system this takes less than .04 seconds.
Keep in mind there are no undocumented features or "Oracle Internals" that the APEX team uses to achieve this performance, just sound database design. With every feature they add they evaluate how it will be used and design the tables and indexes to most efficiently answer the query. Sometimes this means going against "purist" normalized principals.

  • Compared with the iMac display...

Why does it seem to me that when compared with the iMac display, the 30-incher looks somewhat grainy and plays videos not so well? Is the 24" iMac display actually a better display?

The Cinema Display has a anti glare coating on it. I have heard allot of people who have the 30" display complain that it is very noticeable. I have the 23" and it is noticeable but it's not bad at all.
I too have my display connected to an iMac but I think the Cinema Display looks much better.
