How does Photoshop blend layers when stitching panoramas?
When I make panoramas in Photoshop CS6 (after selecting and preparing individual images in LR4), I sometimes wish to modify Photoshop's automatic blending of layers. An example is when a moving person is in two or more adjacent frames & I wish to use a version from a different frame than PS selects. The layer masks are all either pure white or pure black, thus selecting the portions of each frame that is used, but with no gray portions for blending. Opacity of all layers is 100%. So, some other invisible-to-me mechanism is being used to seamlessly blend the layers. When I try to select portions of a different frame (in areas of overlap) by painting white on a mask and black on layer masks above it in the stack, I can partially make visible the desired area but it appears as partially transparent & thus low contrast. How can I get full control of what is included in the final composite?
The selection of what pixels will go into the final image just appears to be done with a white or black mask, and with the most recent versions the masks overlap a bit so you can do things like resize the image or whatever before merging them together and not have transparent edges show up.
For blending, though, I believe Photomerge just alters the colors of the image pixels of each layer to match the colors. This makes it difficult or near impossible to manually tidy up the results. Usually I find that if I have mis-alignment I need to do something different to the input data (like match the exposures better in Camera Raw or something) to get Photomerge to more perfectly stitch them. I've never had any luck trying to adjust things after the fact.
Frankly it's always something I wondered whether they'd polish up and make better someday.

How does the blend move work when the constant velocity profile is not reached?
Hi,
In my application I have to blend several moves with the same velocity and acceleration on only one axis.
In the LabView help it is said that "A blend factor of –1 causes the pending move to start when the existing move finishes its constant velocity segment and starts to decelerate, as shown in the following figure. "
However, if the trajectory parameters are such that the constant velocity segment is never reached (for instance, because during the acceleration segment the target positon is reached), how does the blend motion vi behave? I have looked everywhere and could not find an answer.
Can anyone help me on this?
Thank you in advance,
João Barata
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi,
the blending starts as soon as the deceleration ramp starts. In the case that the constant velocity is never reached, the deceleration ramp starts exactly in the middle of the move (assuming that the values for acceleration and deceleration are the same), so you end up with a triangular velocity profile instead of a trpezoidal velocity profile. That means, it could never happen, that the target position is reached during the acceleration ramp.
I hope that helps,

Why does photoshop cs4 crash when opening a file? (Mac OS 10.6.8)
Why does photoshop cs4 crash when opening a file? (Mac OS 10.6.8) I've rebuilt pref.'s and reinstalled Photoshop with no positive results. I can create a new file but cannot "place" anything because that crashes as well.
System and photoshop have most recent updates. The crash report is as follows:

With my new macbook I attempted to open an older spreadsheet and get the following error message: "This spreadsheet cannot be opened because ti is too old. To open it, save it with numbers '09 first" So how does one do this when I only have ver3.1?
Numbers 3.x can only open Numbers '09 and later. You will need Numbers '09 to open Numbers '08 files.
If it is a single file (or only a few) you can email me and I will open and convert then email back. My email address is in the "Biography" of my profile.
You may have Numbers '09 installed. Look in the folder "/Applications/iWork '09" if Numbers is in that folder launch it, open the file you tried to open, and save. Then you should be able to open in Numbers 3.x -

How does time machine work when backing up a mac pro?
Considering the fact that the mac pro can hold 8TB and a external (non NAS) hard drive can hold only 2TB does time machine only backup the OS disk.macnewcomer22 wrote:

Time Machine will backup everything by default, on every disk in your Mac.
Choose System Preferences > Options to exclude items. You could exclude everything except your OS...but I'd think it is your data that's more important to you, if you have to make choices.
See...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1964018
While it's true you can store almost 8TB, how much do you think you'll actually store? If you have 1TB of data you want to store then a 2TB drive can do it. Also when your TM drive begins to get full it will begin deleting the oldest backups to make room.
You could also get a Drobo with 8 bays...

Does anyone know how Adobe Photoshop implements
L*a*b* to calculate image data
White Point D50 or D65
What version of Lab = CIE, ICC etc..
ant CAT's Bradford of Van Kreis
View Angle 2percent, 10 percent?
Thank you.As explained in our documentation: LAB in Photoshop is D50, 2 degree standard observer, matching the ICC version 2 PCS.

Safari Anti-Phishing- How does it work "Warn When visiting.." option
So, when you turn that feature on: Warn When Visiting A Fraudulent Website," exactly how does Safari know that? I know it was introduced way back in version 3.2, but does it use Goggles safe browsing website info still? I can't seem to find any documentation on it for Safari 5 in how it works.
Also, if it does use Googles Safe-Browsing database, what happens when you turn that feature off and THEN turn it back on? Does it start from sratch or continue building the database where it left off?
Message was edited by: powerbook1701The blacklists from Google’s Safe Browsing Initiative (where Safari checks for 'fraudulent websites') are contained in a database cache file called SafeBrowsing.db - the file was created when you first launched Safari, and if you have the browser open, the file is modified approximately every 30 minutes.
In other words it is part of Safari's (version 3.2 onwards) anti-phishing security feature.
As an alternative to turning off 'Warn when visiting a fraudulent website', which will lose you that important security feature, you could delete that database file, (but first close Safari:
In Tiger:
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari (this is a folder)/SafeBrowsing.db
In Leopard*:
Private/Var/Folders/AF/AFONO9KnGpijQuAcxb6vf++TI/Caches/com.apple.safari/Safari/SafeBrowsing.db
In Snow Leopard*:
Private/Var/folders/iI/iIaUOKJyFS0xmSIANVYiD++TI/-Caches-/com.apple.Safari/SafeBrowsing.db
(*This location may vary depending on your OS. Also, the name of that weird sounding folder will be unique to each user.)
You can get to the Private/Var folder by using Go To in the Finder menu.
It will be recreated next time you open Safari, and will then start again collecting details of dodgy websites.

How does warehouse/accounting knows when to follow up on an SO?
Let say a sales person create 3 SO today for customers.
How does?
- the warehouse aware that they need to ship 3 SOs today?
- accounting aware that they need to create invoice for 3 SOs today?
Will SBO send a message to each user in warehouse/accounting? Or this sales person must actually call and notify warehouse/accounting that he just created 3 SOs thus they must follow up with it.James,
There are two ways to handle this, one the warehouse and the accounting users can look at eh Open Items list Report found under Sales A/R > Sales Reports
and select Sales Orders / Deliveries as per the preceding stages document.
Another route would be to create an Alert and send it internally to the respective user

How does iPad store photos when connected to Windows?
I've recently upgraded to iPad2. A friend is interested in buying my original iPad 32gb because she loves iPhoto and would like to move her current 10 gb photo library into it. Uploading new photos from her camera to the iPad is easy with the card reader. But how could she handle backup of photo files going forward since she works in the Windows world and her primary OS is Windows 7?
I know that when I upload pictures to the iPad in the field and then connect the iPad to my computer at home the Image Capture program asks me if I want to import the photos and where to put them. Does a similar event take place when using Windows?Yes - the windows camera wizard should open : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . Or they can be manually copied from the iPad as it will appear as a 'camera' in windows explorer (in a similar way to how a memory card in a card reader would).

Hidden color in PNG transparency. How does photoshop define it and can i change it?
There is hidden colorinformation in PNG transparency. I need to set the hidden color to black.ow can i change this information?
You can see the false colorinformation of the PNG, when you open the file in Paintshop Pro.
My workaround of this is using PSP instead of Photoshop.Nice! Never thought of Shift clicking the Mask...Thank you for that information!
So when i click on the mask, i really get those hidden information. But i cant change it, do i?
I am using CS6.
And mask from transparency does not work for Smartobjects or does it? -
How does photoshop position fonts in paragraph text boxes?
I am trying to understand how photoshop places the baseline in a paragraph box.
I have a number of custom fonts, when typing in a paragraph text box some of these fonts appear to cross over the bounding box of the paragraph text.
I've looked at the font dimensions, ascender, descender, baseline and x-height and cannot find a common theme that photoshop appears to use.
Its starting to make my head hurt, so please if anybody knows what calculations photoshop uses to place fonts please let me know!
Thanks
JonInDesign is best for larger amounts of text like full paragraphs, but I use PS all the time for text in ads where text is fairly minimal but infinite visual placement is critical. Then I find staying in PS most convenient. Once you learn the (IMO non-intuitive) text formatting controls, infinite adjustment and placement is possible.
Text boxes in PS, however, are IMO problematic regardless of font. If one must use PS rather than InD, when possible it is best to simply type text and format using returns, etc. -

I reinstalled windows 7 and then Photoshop 13 and this worked fine until recently. Now when working in Editor after editing photos for an hour or so Editor freezes. It seems to be after I have printed off photos. The only was to close Editor is to go into the Task Manager. Anyone else had similar problems?
Brian, another way of looking at this is: how many devices do you have connected to the USB port (the same one)? I've found through using external storage devices that one port can handle two devices. I had four going at once one time, but the same thing happened, only two would evenually connect.
There's a limit to connections per USB port, I'm just trying to see if you have too many connectins on one port. If so, obviously, if you have other USB ports available, plug the nano into it's own port and see if that "cures" the missing nano. -
How does materialized view work when refresh the view vs create the view?
I am using a materialized view, and I cant set it to fast refresh because some of the tables are from remote database which does not have materialized view log.
When I create the materialized view, it took like 20 30 seconds. however when I was trying to refresh it. It took more than 2 3 hours. and total number of records are only around 460,000.
I understand that when the view refreshes, it would take extra step like purge the table however I am not sure why it made so much difference in execution time perspective...
Does the dbms_mview.refresh('MY_MATVIEW', 'C', atomic_refresh=>false) do the same exact insert as when I created the view?
Could anyone please let me know how would this happen? Thanks,
Code looks like as following
create materialized view MY_MV1
refresh force on demand
start with to_date('20-02-2013 22:00:00', 'dd-mm-yyyy hh24:mi:ss') next trunc(sysdate)+1+22/24
as
( SELECT Nvl(Cr.Sol_Chng_Num, ' ') AS Change_Request_Nbr,
Nvl(Sr.Sr_Num, ' ') AS Service_Request_Nbr,
Nvl(Sr.w_Org_Id, 0) AS Org_Id,
Fcr.rowid,
Cr.rowid,
Bsr.rowid,
Sr.rowid,
SYSDATE
FROM [email protected] Fcr
INNER JOIN [email protected] Cr
ON Fcr.w_Sol_Chng_Id = Cr.w_Sol_Chng_Id
INNER JOIN [email protected] Bsr
ON Fcr.w_Sol_Chng_Id = Bsr.w_Sol_Chng_Id
INNER JOIN [email protected] Sr
ON Sr.w_Srv_Rec_Id = Bsr.w_Srv_Rec_Id
WHERE Sr.Sr_Num !='NS'
);I have tried to use dbms_mview.refresh('MY_MATVIEW', 'C', atomic_refresh=>false) but it still took 141 mins to run... vs 159 mins without atomic_refresh=>false

Whenever you post provide your 4 digit Oracle version (result of SELECT * FROM V$VERSION)

What Oracle version are you using? The 'atomic_refresh' parameter default was changed to TRUE starting with 10g.
See the PL/SQL Packages and Types doc

atomic_refresh
If this parameter is set to true, then the list of materialized views is refreshed in a single transaction. All of the refreshed materialized views are updated to a single point in time. If the refresh fails for any of the materialized views, none of the materialized views are updated.
If this parameter is set to false, then each of the materialized views is refreshed in a separate transaction.

What that means is that if the value is TRUE Oracle uses a DELETE to remove the existing rows. If the value is FALSE then Oracle uses TRUNCATE.
If you really are using the FALSE setting you should not be seeing that much of a time difference between creating the MV and a complete refresh so something else must be going on. -
How to 'Select All Layers' when background is locked?
I've just tried to Select > All Layers and was very surprised when the Background, a locked layer, was not included in the selection. Is it possible to select all layers, included the background?
This could be a tricky one and needs some explanation. I have about 1600 images to process. I would prefer to do so from within InDesign, to which the images are linked. I want to apply Smart Filters to all the images. That's only a part of the story, but it will do for the moment.
Method 1 and Why it Won't Work
I could apply a Smart Filter by choosing a certain image in InDesign; selecting Edit Original and the image opens in PS. Then I was hoping to use Select All Layers and apply a Smart Filter. But... Select All Layers doesn't select all layers, and you can't apply a Smart Filter unless all layers are selected.
Method 2 and Why it Won't Work
I could open the images within PS by using Open as Smart Object, which DOES select all the layers and allows you to apply a Smart Filter. But for a very good reason (I can explain the reason, but it would take a few more paragraphs), I want to open the images from within InDesign. So, method 2 is unsuitable.
Method 3 and Why it Won't Work
I could batch all the images using an Action to unlock the Background. But, not all my 1600 images have a background. Some have ordinary unlocked layers, some have text layers. I could set up an Action to unlock Background layers (double-click, followed by a Return to name the layer "layer 0"), but if the Action came across a text layer on the bottom -- big problem. For a text layer, double-click followed by a Return does nothing. I'd have one locked-up Action.
Method 4 - A script working from within InDesign could open the images as Smart Objects -- but I'm not a script man.
Seems a bit silly that Select All Layers doesn't allow me to select all layers.
