How does SL speed up my 1,1 MacBook?

I am getting ready to upgrade to SL and have a question, obviously.
I have heard that SL really speeds processes up and was wondering how. I am guessing that it purges support for PPC.
Is this how it works?
Adam
PS... if so, does it free up disk space during installation?

It is a little more complicated than just removing the code that supports PPC Macs, which does make the OS "footprint" on the drive smaller. Among other things, almost all the core & bundled applications (Finder, Disk Utility, Safari, etc.) have been rewritten as 64 bit applications. Some of the improved performance comes from taking advantage of 64 bit CPU instructions that can move more data per clock cycle, a little from the smaller code. Most of it comes from a fundamental rewrite of everything from the ground up, so to speak.
As Apple says, it is a streamlined, more refined version of Leopard.

  • How can I speed up slow Maverick on MacBook Pro?

question or problem: How can I speed up slow Maverick on MacBook Pro?
answer or solution:  Per Apple Genius in Palo Alto,  CA
Maverick consumes almost my entire 4 GB of ram memory shown in Activity Monitor.
    Found under Applications-->Utilities-->Activity Monitor
Will purchase two 4 GB banks and install myself using inexpensive tools.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • How does one manage function sounds on the MacBook Pro?

I cannot stand the cute little "twinkle" sound made when I save a document, but don't want to mute the machine in order to avoid it -- I want to turn it off or at least substitute something else. How?

You may want to try deleting the file com.apple.soundpref.plist, then resetting your sound preferences.
The file is located here: Mac HD/Library/Preferences. There may also be one here: Mac HD/Users/youraccountname/Library/Preferences. Delete both, if both are present.

  • How does Final Cut Studio run on a MacBook ?

Anyone installed it, and able to give comments & performance comparisons ?

Then no PC card addition 800 FW port or additional port ever... Nevertheless, you could still do DV and lower data rate stuff, however RT will be limited by FW 400, and you'll have to be careful about looping FW 400 devices. Use a known FW drive that loops your camera/deck's FW imput without a hitch. There's several out there that will not do this well. Look at Weibetech, Granite Digital or G-Tech drives, I know they work OK looping DV signals thru them.
I think I'd want a MacBook Pro for FCP myself, at least it's certainly worth the difference in price from the new MacBook...

  • How does a damaged power cord affect a MacBook pro?

My puppy chewed my power cord this a.m. The Mac told me to reset the time and date and then said that I had lost connection to the Internet..is this possible with a damaged cord?

Regardless of what else is going on, you need to replace your damaged AC adapter immediately, rather than continue trying to use it. If problems persist after you get a new adapter, then we can try to help you solve them.
Keep your puppy and your computer separated.

  • How quick to export HD footage on new Macbook Pro?

I have a mid 2007 Macbook Pro (2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 gig memory, 7200 rpm hard drive) and will be editing HD footage soon. I've been told I should avoid it with my laptop though it seems to work fine on the whole.
What it does seem slow on is exporting and was wondering if someone could help me judge this....
I exported a Quicktime Movie of 2 mins 59 secs of XDCam EX footage shot at 35 mbs and it took 10 mins 51 secs. (I put a couple of lower thirds on it and few video tracks.) Just how does this hold up against a new Macbook Pro? Is this good or bad?
    Thanks

do some searching here.  My experience has been to set up my xdcam sequences  to render as prores.  I thought this sped things up as I think every bit of an xdcam sequence has to be rendered even if you're exporting with current settings, but I seem to remember a recent thread saying this wasn't true.

Unless you enabled Find My iPad on it before it was stolen then there isn't any way to locate it. If you did enable it then you could try locating it either via http://icloud.com on a computer or Find My iPhone on another device - but that will only work if it's connected to a network and the device hasn't already been wiped and/or Find My iPad disabled on it.
If it was stolen then you should report it to the police. You should also change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc.
If it was never registered to your account then it won't appear on your support profile : https://supportprofile.apple.com/
The only other ways to find it that I know of (apart from on the actual device) are via the packaging, the backup on a computer's iTunes : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4061

  • HT5953 How can I speed up the "start speaking" feature in iBooks? (System Preferences Dictation and speech does not do anything to the speech speed.) The rate is a bit to slow.

How can I speed up the "start speaking" feature in iBooks? (System Preferences Dictation and speech does not do anything to the speech speed.) The rate is a bit to slow.

Hi, I had the same problem you described, and I noticed that there are two ways of activating text to speech on iBook for Mac, with different speed results (at least on my MacBook Pro Retina display)
On your iBook you can select the text and and then click on > More> Start speaking,  and you will get a certain speed, which tends to be too slow.
But you will get the speed you had selected with "Go to System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech. In there is a slider to adjust the speaking rate." if you use the TOP MENU (next to the black apple)  under Edit>Speech>Start Speaking. I also learned that under System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech, there is an option for a shortcut which is very helpful. And you can change Key. Hope this was helpful.

  • How does AnyConnect client calculate its Link Speed? (Windows 7)

I'm curious about how the AnyConnect client determines what its default Link Speed is, upon initialization?
For example, from behind my home firewall, if I have a client that's physically connected to a 1Gbps uplink, when I launch the AnyConnect client, Windows Task Manager shows me a Link Speed of 9 Mbps for my AnyConnect connection.
However, if I also launch an AnyConnect connection from another machine on my home LAN, connected via 300Mbps WiFi, Windows Task Manager will only show me around a 1 Mbps Link Speed.
How does the AnyConnect client calculate its Link Speed upon connection?   Does it take a percentage of the available upstream bandwidth?
My home ISP bandwidth is 50Mbps down/12 Mbps up.   My corporate ISP (where the ASA I'm connecting to resides) it 50Mbps bi-directional.

For PHP, if you want to handle data in UTF8, NLS_LANG must be set to
    "<language>_<territory>.UTF8", where <language> and <territory> are your
preference. There is few difference between ODBC and OCI called by PHP
in this case as both need to set NLS_LANG to UTF8. If you are familiar
with OCI and expect better performance, you can do so. But if you want
to make the application be portable in terms of data source, ODBC is an
    appropriate choice.
Data source doesn't matter the encoding of client. The character set of
client is determined by how client calls ODBC functions SQLBindParameter
or SQLBindCol. If the client specifies SQL_C_WCHAR, data is exchanged in
UTF-16 independent from NLS_LANG. If it is SQL_C_CHAR, data is in
NLS_LANG encoding. Unicode ODBC client binds data with SQL_C_WCHAR, that
is exactly the case of MS Access 2000. On the other hand, because PHP
binds data with SQL_C_CHAR, NLS_LANG is taken as the encoding for data
    manipulations

  • How does Activity Moniter measure Network speeds.

How does Activity Monitor measure network transfer rates? They are always much lower than Web based speed checks. Typically my download speed on Activity Monitor is 162 KBS whereas Web based speed check return 1.2 MBS.

Duh! I should have realized the AT&T and Activity Monitor are using two different measurements. AT&T uses bits. Activity Monitor uses Bytes. Multiply Bytes by 8 to get bits. So 162 K-bytes in Activity Monitor = 1.29 M-bits in AT&T speed test. The problem comes in misreading the labeling of the units measured. Which is something that causes confusion frequently because the industry is not uniform in its use of labels.
It is interesting that AT&T uses the higher number. Is this a marketing strategy? Don't get me wrong, I am very satisfied with their service.
I am also VERY satisfied with my MacBook Pro. The best Mac I ever owned (since my first Mac in 1993 and Apple 2's for 10 years before that). Awesome system software, boots faster than previous MacBooks I owned. Has been flawless in performance. I bought it from Apple refurbished. It came with a larger HD than I ordered. I have used both WinTel (since 1993) and Apple machines. There is no comparison IMHO.

  • How does Alchemy 2 achieve near native speed?

I'm curious how does Alchemy 2 achieve the near native execution speed? I've read before how Alchemy 1 rewrites memory loads and stores in the C program to use few Alchemy-specific opcodes [1] and I can certainly imagine how this still has a significant overhead compared to the native code. Does Alchemy 2 use some more general x86 sandboxing technique similarly to Google Native Client?
I've noticed that a few people have received invites for the beta after asking questions on the forum. Can I tell just how much I'm excited about Alchemy too

  • How does hard drive speed impact iMovie performance

I'm thinking of getting one of the newly released 15" MacBook pro laptops. For hard drive choices I can get 750GB @ 5400 RPM or 500GB @ 7200 RPM (SSD Drives are too expensive for me). How does hard drive speed impact iMovie performance?

Most of my videos are .mov. Currently I'm using a ContourGPS and it saves the files as .mov H264 and iMovie converts it. It think it's uncompressing the file using Apple Intermediate codec, the extension is still .mov after the iMovie conversion.
