How does Time Capsule handle the same files on multiple computers?

I'm a writer who works on my MacBook Pro, the family's desktop PC and soon hope to have my own Apple desktop.
Is it possible to have the most current document(s) available no matter which machine I'm on?
Does Time Capsule go to each computer, find the most recent version and back it up?
Does it even work with PCs?

Is it possible to have the most current document(s) available no matter which machine I'm on?
Sorry, but no.
Does Time Capsule go to each computer, find the most recent version and back it up?
Time Machine will backup any changes to each Mac hourly
Does it even work with PCs?
Only if you manually drag/drop or copy/paste PC files to the Time Capsule drive

  • How can I do to acquire and save date in the same time and in the same file when I run continual my VI without interruption.

I've attached a VI that I am using to acquire amplitude from Spectrum analyzerse. I tried to connect amplitude ouput to the VI Write Characters To File.vi and Write to Spreadsheet File.vi. Unfortunately when I run continual this VI without interruption, labview ask me many time to enter a new file name to save a new value.
So, How can I do to aquire and save date in the same time and in the same file when I run continual my VI for example during 10 min.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
Your VI does work perfectly. Unfortunately this not what I want to do. I've made error in my last comment. I am so sorry for this.
So I explain to you again what I want to do exactly. I want to acquire amplitude along road by my vehicle. I want to use wheel signal coming from vehicle to measure distance along road. Then I acquire 1 amplitude each 60 inches from spectrum analyzer.
I acquire from PC parallel port a coded wheel signal coming from vehicle (each period of the signal corresponds to 12 Inches). Figure attached shows the numeric signal coming from vehicle, and the corresponding values “120” and “88” that I can read from In Port vi.
So I want to acquire 1 time amplitude from spectrum analyser each 5
period of the signal that I am acquiring from parallel port.
So fist I have to find how can I count the number of period from reading the values “120” and “88” that I am acquiring from In Port (I don’t know the way to count a number of period from reading values “120” and “88”).
    Here is a new algorithm.
    1) i=0 (counter: number of period)
    2) I read value from In Port
    3) If I acquire a period
    i= i+1 (another period)
    4) If i is multiple of 5 (If I read 5 period)
acquire 1 time amplitude and write to the same
file this amplitude and the corresponding distance
Distance = 12*i). Remember each period of signal
Corresponds to 12 Inches).i has to take these
    values: 5,10,15,20,25,35,40,45,50,55,60............
    5) Back to 2 if not stop.
Thank you very much for helping me.

  • Accessing Time Capsule on the same LAN ?

I've placed my Time Capsule on the same LAN as my other systems (a switch) -- I cannot access the TC on the same LAN, only if I plug my Mac in the switch ports behind it.
How can I reconfigure the TC to allow connections to it on the external LAN? In front of it is a firewall, and I don't want and double NAT configuration.
    Thanks.

You just need to reconfigure the TC as a bridge. (ref: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))

  • Can I use 2 Time Capsules on the same network

Can I use 2 Time Capsules on the same network
Posted: Jul 23, 2009 1:49 PM Reply Email
Here is what I want to do. I currently have a time capsule used for one end of the house. Currently my 2 kids rooms are in an addition that I have run a cable from the time capsule to each of their rooms. If I want to give them wireless for that part of the house could I add another TC, for wireless and they can both backup their macbooks to that time capsule.
So Can I add a 2nd time capsule to extend by "N" network, or should I just go with an AP express or extreme and let them each have their own HD backup for each macbook?

Have bought many reconditioned (Refurb) product from Apple site and have always been happy with them. To date none have failed me and we have been Apple customers since 2006. With that said when you buy Refurbs make sure you know what model you are getting. The current TCs on the Apple site are last generation. The way to tell is to check the model number against the current one. Easy way to do this is to put both in the shopping cart and compare the model numbers. The Refurb model number is FB277LL/A and the new TC model is MB765LL/A. The first digits identify whether a Refurb or new, the rest should be the same if they are the same model number.
Before you buy, now which model number you want and then check other sites to compare prices. I recently purchased a new TC on Amazon for a better price then the Apple Store Site. For larger Refurb purchases like MBPs, we choose to buy directly from Apple; but for peripherals we often buy from OWC, Amazon, and other sites. Hope this helps.

  • Using the same library with multiple computers over a network Use Aperture

Hi Everyone. I am researching some cataloguing/editing programs to recommend one to my boss, and I was wondering if it was possible to use the same library between multiple computers on a network. Does anyone know if this is possible? This may be what makes or breaks the decision on whether or not to go with Aperture as we need a program that can access a large database of photos on multiple computers.
    Thank you.

    Welcome to the forum.
    You can do it, but...
    It's not supported by Apple.
Performance won't be great unless you're running a really fast network.
If more than one person tries to access the Library at one time you're likely to end up with a corrupted database, and there's no code in Aperture to limit access to one person at a time.
The Library must be stored on an HFS+ volume - don't even try putting it on a FAT32-formatted drive.
If you want 'proper' multi-concurrent-user network-enabled cataloguing software you're looking into a whole different level of investment than the low price of Aperture - think more in terms of thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars.

  • Why, with iCloud, do we continue receiving the same email on multiple computers?

Why, with iCloud, do we continue receiving the same email on multiple computers? Is there a way of stopping this?

If those multiple computers are all setup to use the same iCloud account, then it is working exactly as intended. That's what iCloud does. Keeps your email, contacts, calendars, bookmarks, tasks etc. in sync across all devices/computers that the same iCloud account is setup on.
If you want independent email on each device/computer, you need to setup independent email accounts for each device/computer.

  • How does time capsule distinguish between computers on the network?

I used the migration assistant to set up my new MBAIR. Gave the old MBPRO to my wife, but want to back up both machines using Time Capsul. Just want to be sure that the TC will differentiate the two machines. I renamed the MBPRO in the Sharing Settings. I assume that should do it but don't want to undo a whole lot of work.

On the first backup of the new Mac, you should be asked whether you want to "inherit" (on Lion) or "Reuse" (on Snow Leopard) the backups of the old Mac, per #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If you choose Create New Backup, Time Machine will create a new sparsebundle on your TC for the new Mac.
The two will compete for the empty space on the Time Capsule; if the old one has already used most or all of it, you'll have a problem.  If so, you'll have two options:
Delete a number of old backups manually, and "compact" the old sparse bundle, per #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
Connect a USB drive to the TC and back the new Mac up to it, instead of the TC's internal HD.

  • How does Time Machine Handle separate Boot and User Volumes?

I recently installed an SSD and set it up as my boot drive, and I'm using another hard drive for my Home folder, if I ever run into a scenario that I need to restore my entire system, how will Time Machine handle it?
Will it restore my system back to the drives that they came off of?, in other words will my Boot volume be restored back to the SSD and my Home folder back to the hard drive, or will it restore everything back on the one disk it asks me to select before I click restore?

    Michael Hoover wrote:
Ok, so if I tried to access a backup from booting with the Snow Leopard install disk I won't be able to select which volume I need to restore?
You would restore the OSX volume via the procedure in #14 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You would restore the data-only volume separately, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in the FAQ.
I guess I would be better off doing incremental backups with Carbon Copy Cloner on 2 partitions on the same volume.
That would also take two separate operations to restore. (It would be a good idea to do such backups +*in addition+* to Time Machine backups, in case there's a problem with either disk drive or backup app, or a user error like erasing the wrong disk.)
Your scenario is actually quite unlikely; you'd rarely need to restore both volumes at once. If the SSD fails, you'd only need to restore it; if the HD fails, you'd only need to restore that.
It would get a bit more complicated if you get a new Mac, especially one with a single volume. That's one of the reasons it's a good idea to keep at least a minimal Admin account on the OSX volume.

  • Using an Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule at the same time

Guys I have had an Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule running together for nearly a year now and over the last few days the TC has been behaving badly. I changed its settings and now I'm in a mess. No, I can't remember the previous settings
Does anyone have a definitive list of the settings I need please? I have an ethernet cable modem, and the Airport Extreme is plugged into that as the main router. Two computers and the Time Capsule are plugged into the Airport Extreme using ethernet. The Time Capsule at the moment is just used as a network drive for Time Machine, but at some point I want to move it, with a long ethernet cable, and use it for extending the wifi in the house.
    1. Should I connect the TC using its WAN port or one of the other ethernet ports? At present it's one of the other ones.
    2. What TC settings should I use to have it function purely as a hard drive? At the moment there's some kind of conflict and my internet connection drops every 30 minutes.
    3. Then later, what settings will I need to get the ethernet connected TC to extend the range of my wifi?
I read the Apple doc about WDS and tried setting the TC up that way. Then I discovered there is no WDS option in the AE Wireless settings. Only "Create a wireless network" or "extend a wireless network". The same setting on the TC has these options: "Create a wireless network" "Participate in a WDS network" or "extend a wireless network". Both devices have firmware 7.5.2. It didn't work with only the TC set for WDS, of course, but after that I can't get it back the way it was - which wasn't reliable anyway
Any help in exactly what the Wireless and Internet settings should be would be massively useful. Thanks!

If you use the extreme as a router then the tc should be connected via its wan port to one of the lan ports on the extreme. Tc should be set up in bridge mode. Basically you could set it up to create another wireless network beside the one created by the extreme. There is no need to use WDS or extend the other network.
Use the same SSID and password for both machines. Computers will connect to the strongest signal.

  • Does Time Machine provide the same capability as Windows Restore?

Hi - I am exploring backup and restore options for the MAC.  I am most familiar with Windows and Windows Restore, where you can restore a Win machine back to the same state it was at a particular point in time ( including the OS and system files. Does Time Machine provide this same capability?  Thanks in advance for your time.

Yes, it provides the ability to recover personal documents only or a complete snapshot of the operating system with applications, files and settings present during the time that snapshot was taken.

  • How does time machine use the external disk space??

does time machine back up only the changed or new stuff or does it back up everything?  does this mean that if on "day one" it backed up 600 gb worth of data, the next back up on "day 2" would be 600gb+a few more things, or would it be 600gb+600gb+the few more things?  Does it back up "day one" in a whole package and "day two" in another package, or does it back up "day one", plus only the different things made from "day one" to "day two""?
similarly, does it keep stuff from the first back up ever, plus anything new or modified in the following back ups, then when it is full, does it let just the oldest files drop off?  or does it drop off everything from the initial backup?  that is, if I had 20mb of changes would it erase only 20mb of data to make the new data fit, or would it erase all 600gb from say "day one"?
    thanks for the answer!

  • How does Time Machine handle alias files on the backup volume?

I have been trying to find some info on how Time Machine handles alias files on the backup volume, but can't find anything on that topic. Neither here in this discussion or at the Apple support pages.
My concern is if an alias file on the backup volume is backed up »as is«, or if it is resolved and the original file is backed up? The last would be most annoying as this will make the size of the backup much larger.
Even though I do not know of folders having been renamed (which will cause that folder and all its content to be backed up again) Time Machine often backs up a surprisingly large amount of data, so I suspect that alias files could be resolved.
Any info on this will be appreciated.

Alias files are NOT followed, AFAIK.
For more info on how TM works, see this ars technica review.
    Good luck!

  • Does the new time capsule have the same power issues as the old one?

I loved the idea of having my wi-fi and back-up all in one unit so I slashed out on a 2TB Time Capsule in February 2013.  Over the last three of four months we have been experiencing problems with the wi-fi (keeps dropping).  Took it in to the local Apple Store and was told that it is an issue with the power supply in the unit and that this is not uncommon.  I am reluctant to shell out $400 for a replacement Apple Time Capsule if it has the same issues and will need replacing in two years.  Does anyone know if the new designed Time Capsule has been improved to remedy this problem?  If not, any suggestions for a better designed alternative?
    Thanks.

If you have applecare or still have possibility of buying applecare on a computer or apple TV then the TC would still be covered.
The store has jumped to a conclusion but I am not sure the evidence is pointing that way.. the power supplies in Gen4 were pretty ok for the life of the unit.
However they did have some serious board issues start to show up at around 2year mark.. the board was poorly soldered.. and some have got it working by the oven bake method..
    See https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/gen4-a1409-issues
IMHO it is better to figure out a way of getting the TC under applecare and getting it replaced by apple. If it really does prove to have wireless issues.
I would do a full factory reset of the TC.. and redo the setup again.
And if you run Yosemite.. I would be blaming the computer first.. and only the TC if everything else (with the computer isolated) also has issues. Yosemite itself can trigger issues in other network devices.
I would also say wireless is a strange beastie.. people next door could have setup a new wireless router designed specifically to overwhelm the issues your router caused them.. router wars..
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.
If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2. Fixed wireless channels.. try 11, 8, 6 for 2.4ghz and try a low channel like 36 or 40 and then a high channel.. 149, 165. Whatever is available in your area for 5ghz.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.
Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
Yosemite has serious DNS bug in the networking application.. here is the lets say more arcane method of fixing it by doing a network transplant from mavericks.
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/
