How does Time Capsule treat data other than disk images?

Hi there
I have a 3TB TC to use primarily as a wireless backup, as intended by Apple.
However, I wish to temporarily transfer a couple of GBs of data to it for transferring across to another machine.
I seem able to do the above, but my question is: how does the TC treat the two different types of data?
- Is it a better idea to partition the drive first?
- Is the TC likely to automatically delete the original data, like it does with old disk images, when the disk gets full?
- Can the TC handle the disk images and the original data side-by-side?
Just need some help understanding the 'Apple Magic' with this one!
I do realise that having the original data on the TC won't help me if it fails, but like I said, this is a temporary measure. Please don't post about this, as you won't win yourself any points - you'll just look like a smart-*** and annoy everyone.
Thanks in advance!

1. The Time Capsule will not automatically delete data that wasn't originally put on it as part of a Time Machine backup.
2. It isn't possible to partition the Time Capsule. Network drives can only be partitioned by software specifically designed to work with that drive.

  • How does Time Capsule handle the same files on multiple computers?

I'm a writer who works on my MacBook Pro, the family's desktop PC and soon hope to have my own Apple desktop.
Is it possible to have the most current document(s) available no matter which machine I'm on?
Does Time Capsule go to each computer, find the most recent version and back it up?
Does it even work with PCs?

    Sorry, but no.
Does Time Capsule go to each computer, find the most recent version and back it up?
Time Machine will backup any changes to each Mac hourly
Does it even work with PCs?
Only if you manually drag/drop or copy/paste PC files to the Time Capsule drive

  • How does time capsule and Time machine save data?

So I have an iMac with a 1tb drive (about 200gigs used) and a laptop with a 320gig drive (about 180gigs used). My airport extreme is crapping out, so I thought I would upgrade to a time capsule.
I haven't used time machine, but I recently read that Time Machine takes a complete snap shot of the HDD. So even though I have 800gigs free on my imac, it will still take up 1tb on the time capsule. I was hoping to back up both on the time machine. (Well aware that I will eventually run out of space).
Is this correct? or will I be able to back up both on the Time Capsule?

I believe Time Machine (TM) will only back up the data portion of your 1 TB drive, not the free space, as TM is not a disk cloning utility. So if you, in your example, only have 200 GB of data on your drive, the first TM backup will only be approximately 200 GB is size. So you should be able to back up both Macs using TM to the Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule with files other than backups

I have installed a 3 TB Time Capsule. I use it for Time Machine backups from an iMac and a Macbook Air. The Time Capsule has a sparsebundle for each of the Time Machines.
Question 1. If the Time Capsule runs out of space due to backups from the two computers what will happen? Will the iMac Time Machine delete files from the laptop sparsebundle if it is the first to do a backup after the TC is full?
Question 2. If I store files other than the sparsebundle on the TC will they be deleted to make space for the sparsebundles to increase in size? If so, is there anyway to prevent the non-Time Machine files from being deleted?
    Thank you.

No, it will only delete files from its own sparsebundle.

Again No.. the TM has no ability to do anything outside its own sparsebundle.. it will not affect your files.. mixing up data and TM backups is not necessarily a great idea though.

  • How can we get layer data other than PF_CHECKOUT_PARAM?

    Hello,
I want to know the all other ways how to get the layer data from AE without using PF_CHECKOUT_PARAM?

it requires few steps, but in general you get the item of the layer  you wish to get it's pixels,
and you use AEGP_RenderAndCheckoutFrame, and then AEGP_GetReceiptWrold.
the problem with this method is that AE can't tell in advance that you'll be checking that layer,
so AE can't make smart rendering and caching decisions that would minize the toll on the render time.
if it's not impossible, you should prefer PF_CHECKOUT_FRAME with an invisible param.

  • Exactly How Does Time Capsule Work/Backup Strategy?

I've got a MacBook and several external drives I want to access wirelessly but I also want to backup all of them. I understand that Time Capsule won't backup any drives plugged into its external USB port. However, will the Time Capsule backup any external drive connected to my MacBook?
From what I've read it appears that the Time Capsule relies on the computer to backup the drive. If the computer is asleep or off, there's no backup. So it's only backing up my MacBook when I'm using it? Does that mean I should plan time when I'm not using it, to let it sit idle so the network activity doesn't interfere with my use of it? In which case, I could plug the drives into the MacBook at the same time. However, this seems somewhat inconvenient.
Since I want to use the drives wirelessly anyway, If they were all connected to something like a Mac mini, then everything connected to the mini could be backed up whenever. For that matter, could the Mini itself could be used as the AirPort and network drive for my MacBook and take the place of the Time Capsule (not to mention use as a second computer)? Would this be a better solution for my needs?
FYI, I already have an AirPort Express.

It backs up while the Mac is on, and it does it in the background. I have not noticed much difference working when it's on, so I just let it churn away while I do whatever I want to do. Remember that the backup is occurring over the local network only, and that should normally have a lot of capacity, especially over wireless n or Gigabit Ethernet. It's no big deal to use the Internet at the same time as Time Capsule, since your Internet connection is probably a fraction of your local network speed and has no problem getting through around the backup.

  • How does Time Capsule identify Macs backing up towards it

I have acquired a MacBook Air and copied data and settings from my MacBook Pro to it. I have no intention to replace the MacBook Pro, but to use both computers simultaneously. Everything works fine, but when both machines are online in my home LAN and are trying to execute a Time Machine backup to the Time Capsule, I very often get an error from the (old) MacBook Pro that the Time Capsule is busy.
Would there be a possibility that the MacBook Air has somehow herited any kind of ID from the MacBook Pro so they are seen as identical machines from the TIme Capsule?
I have changed the computer name in the sharing settings - is there anything else I should change to make this work?
    Kind regards, Stefan

Check the Time Machine Preferences on the MBA and check the setting of the ON/OFF slider.  If you do not want TM to automatically backup from the MBA, set it to OFF.
I run TM manually from my MacBooks to avoid any conflicts on the TC.
Thank you Chamar, I apologize for being unclear in my statement. I am very happy with Time Machine starting automatically, I only would like to know by what criteria a client is identified by Time Machine / Time Capsule. If it is the computer name in Sharing Preferences only, then ok.

  • How does time capsule work for PCs

looking for a wireless backup option for my MacbookPro and my HP Desktop, so want to be sure that the wireless backup options / software works on both platforms and there are no hangups

I have not used this product, but my neighbor loves it says that the software will allow automatic backups to a Time Capsule.

  • How does time capsule distinguish between computers on the network?

I used the migration assistant to set up my new MBAIR. Gave the old MBPRO to my wife, but want to back up both machines using Time Capsul. Just want to be sure that the TC will differentiate the two machines. I renamed the MBPRO in the Sharing Settings. I assume that should do it but don't want to undo a whole lot of work.

On the first backup of the new Mac, you should be asked whether you want to "inherit" (on Lion) or "Reuse" (on Snow Leopard) the backups of the old Mac, per #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If you choose Create New Backup, Time Machine will create a new sparsebundle on your TC for the new Mac.
The two will compete for the empty space on the Time Capsule; if the old one has already used most or all of it, you'll have a problem.  If so, you'll have two options:
Delete a number of old backups manually, and "compact" the old sparse bundle, per #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
Connect a USB drive to the TC and back the new Mac up to it, instead of the TC's internal HD.

  • My time capsule (along with other external disks) denies me access

after I repaired disk permissions.  Disk utility won't repair the permissions on any of the disks and I can't even reformat the Time Capsule. HELP!

Thanks.  That is a big help. At least I can use the time capsule again.
But what still puzzles me is how the permissions got corrupted in the first place.  I've been repairing permissions on a monthly basis for years and never had a problem.
The only thing I did differently this time was I shift clicked on the disks with the OS on them to see if it would repair permissions on more than one disk without having to do them independently.
I have three separate boot drives, all with OS 10.6.x because I edit video for a living and use different software for different clients and in the past I was always told that Final Cut Pro didn't play nicely with the different versions of Avid Media Composer so we always had separate boot drives to keep any conflicts from happening.
Thanks for your help.  I never noticed the "erase" option on the time capsule before.  But then again I had no reason to look until now and I assumed it woud be a function of disk utility.

  • HT3275 I am received an error on my Time Capsule   which states the backup disk image  "Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro. sparse bundle? is already in use.  so time machine couldn't complete the backup to time capsule - any suggestion

I've received an error message    Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to Time Capsule,   the backup disk image  /Volumes/Date/....MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.  Any suggestions as to what I can do to fix it?

I've got mine working again by deleting a partial backup that was on the Time Capsule.
I mounted the backup sparsebundle, and then browsed the content and found a filestucture named <timstamp>.inProgress. I removed that and the followed the tip to disconnect described above. That did the trick for me.

  • I am getting a time capsule error that the backup disk image can be accessed (error -1) - what does this mean?

When my time capsule tries to perform a back-up - i get the following error message.
The backup disk image "/volumes/data/myname's iMac.sparsebundle" could not be acccessed (error-1).
Is this something that can be resolved or is time capsule dead?

That error is caused by different reasons. Have a look at this Pondini's page > http://pondini.org/TM/C17.html

  • Time capsule error "Unable to create disk image"

Apart from all the various issues on the discussions I noticed the following with the latest releases on the TC 7.4.1.
My time capsule stopped backing up and started asking for a password; also the capsule was unable to mount on the desktop in the finder. If I gave the TC an I.P could mount it but it still refused to back up, one of the other things I noticed the TC started to ask for a password, which it never asked for before the software update.
My solution given two weeks of late nights going out of my mind were to delete my prefs including my keychain prefs and repair my permissions using disk utility, which found several problems, my TC now backs up after several weeks without it going backwards and forwards through previous updates etc.
It's drastic but it worked for me.
    Hope this helps

I am still experimenting. To narrow the problem, I decided to create individual disk images of the folders in the User folder. The first one I tried was 7 GB and worked fine. Overnight, I tried one that is 13 GB. It failed with an out of room message on the startup disk! The startup disk has 17 GB free. Nothing should have been written to the startup disk!
This time, I configured Disk Utility to read from the startup disk and write to an external disk. The destination disk had more than enough space. But, I ran out of space on the source. It appears that Disk Utility is writing all or a portion of the compressed file to either the startup or the source disk and running out of room.
Previously, when I created the image of my user folder (instead of my wife's), the source was my user folder on the startup disk and the destinaion for the image was on an external disk. The difference I see is that my startup disk has enough free space for the entire compressed image file.
In my first attempt that gave me the -39, both the source and the destination disks were external. So maybe Disk Utility is creating the image on the source and at the end copying it to the destination. This would explain the difference in the error messages.
I'll try to confirm all of this in the next few days and report my findings.
