How does windows run on iMac compared to a PC?

I'm just wondering if it's buggy, laggy, or somehow more inconveinient to run windows on a Mac rather than a PC

Anyone?

  • How Does Windows Boot If The iMac's Hardisk is GUID & Not MBR?

Hi. How does Windows (Windows 8.1 64-bit in this case) boot if the hard drive in the iMac (late 2009) is in GUID partition scheme? Doesn't Windows need a partition scheme of MBR?
Thank you in advance. Have a great upcoming sunday mass/great week.
    God bless.

You run Boot Camp Assistant to create the proper partition on which to install Windows.

  • How does Aperture run on 128MB of VRAM?

I want to purchase the low end mac book pro. How does aperture run on the 128MB of VRAM?
Will it run okay and how will it compare to the 256MB one?
Also, is it different for Ap1.5 and Ap2?

It is really simple: Aperture performs better with stronger hardware. As one goes up the line of Mac hardware performance improves.
Although Aperture will run on any MacIntel with at least 2 GB RAM, all laptops and iMacs are very significantly limiting to Aperture's performance. IMO if one buys a by-definition-limiting box like a MBP (I own one) it makes most sense to buy the strongest MBP available.
Whatever you buy, max out the RAM.

  • How does Windows Error Reporting identify your application?

When an error occurs and you are requested to send an error report, how does Windows Error Reporting service identify your application so that you can view the reports in your dashboard?
How do I register my applications for Windows Error Reporting?
To get a Windows logo an application must only handle expected errors and allow Windows Error Reporting (WER) to handle unexpected errors according to an article at

  • How does Aperture run on a PowerBook?

Does Aperture run well on a PowerBook?

    Hi
I have a PB 1.5MHZ and 1GB RAM. Aperture works quite ok for basic stuff(despite all the beta quality problems that are not acceptable, but this is another story). I have 12'000 photos in the entire library and it takes some seconds to load them all. But I never work with all images at the same time. So, If you have not incredible huge projects this is not an issue. However, I do not use many raw images but only high res jpg's (8 and 10 m-pixels).
This is for browsing, working with keywords etc. - the powerbook works fine.
But when it comes to editing, the Powerbook really hits the limit. Maybe this is also because I have only 1 gig of RAM. E.g. using the patch tool is almost impossible since moving the patch area takes 5 seconds to recalculate. The feeling is like having a blind mouse - you navigate and wait to see where your pointer now is. This real-time feature is totaly unusable on a powerbook. Basic editing like contrast, exposer works ok.
And since everything is realtime, the more image adjustments you make, the slower everything gets.
Importing is really a slow dog. In the office I have a dual 2.7Ghz machine with lots of RAM and even there importing images is slow.
But still, I was quite surprised how well it woks on my Powerbook. I do the big things in the office, but beeing able to take everything with me and do some works on my projects in the train or whatever is really good.
I hope that we soon get very fast dual core intel based powerbooks that might even be faster than todays dual powermacs...
    Cheers

  • How does the Office Excel 2011 compare to 2010 Windows?

My professor said that 2010 is required to use and that 2007 does not have all the features. Is the Mac 2011 very similar to 2010 that I would be fine using 2011. If for some reason it's not, do I need to have a program if I need to get the 2010 on my computer, or is that even possible? My school's library, public library, work, my netbook, etc... all have office 2007. I would love your input. I bought my iMac last March and it has 2011 on it. Thanks.

You should probalby post your question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac software, as they're specific to your question and Apple Communities only provide support for Apple products:

Let's say I have a new baseline Mac Pro, and a PC with comparable specs. How would the mac stack up against the PC, running XP SP3? I'm thinking of getting a mac and putting bootcamp on it, but I want to be able to run all my games. Does a mac run games fine in bootcamp?

They would have similar or the same benchmarks.

Depends on the system requirements of the games, but when your Mac is running Windows, it is for all intents and purposes a Windows PC and can run Windows applications and games like any other Windows PC (as already stated).

  • Email - How Does It Send Mail Differently compared to a Palm?

I'm curious... and hoping someone can clarify this for me.
On the Blackberrys we have for our company it does not allow you to specify an outgoing server, but automatically configures one presumedly hosted by our service provider, Bell (and doesn't let you see which one it is using).  Our blackberrys are setup to use work emails (ie. incoming server is our company mail server).   Our spam filter is set to NOT allow people to send from external IP addresses using their work emails, yet the Blackberrys are able to send even though they are using the Bell network/server.  However, on our Palm devices (Palm Preo), we cannot send from a work email address through an external IP, even though on first glance the different devices appear to have a similar setup, except that we can actually see the outgoing server (again, a Bell server, mail.1xbell.ca)  on the Palm.
Basically, I'm trying to figure out how the Blackberrys handle outgoing mail differently to allow them to bypass the spoofing rule.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
You have touched upon one of the fundamental differences between the compared devices. This is how I think it works...
Others: These run an email client on the HH that touches the email server for both incoming and outgoing email, using that infrastructure for traffic both ways. This generates traffic over the carrier network to the HH even when there is nothing to do.
Non-BES BBs: These use Blackberry Internet Service, a service, hosted at the carrier, which functions as the conduit between the internet facing email service and the BB. For incoming, BIS touches the email server. For outgoing, BIS uses it's own SMTP host (at the carrier). Since BIS touches the server to check for new email, no traffic to the HH is generated unless there is something to do.
BES-based BBs: These use the corporate BES for handling email in both directions.
    Hope that helps!

  • How does NetBeans run for you?

Was going to start using NetBeans today and was amazed at how bad it was. Can't really picture it being that bad for most people.
Basically here is what it did.
Loaded - took like 10 seconds.
Popped up, I choose to make a new project.
Spent like 5 minutes reading the classpath classes or something.
Gave me a wizard. I tried to make a project, java errors showed up red in the status bar, stopped working: I closed it.
I could continue but basically it was the slowest and buggiest thing I have ever tried to use, Maya seriously runs faster and I don't understand how what is basically a text editor could lag so bad. It only crashed once, but it was painly slow; even trying the whole thing lagged. Is this normal or was it just not working right on my computer? Anyone know what could maybe make it go faster?
    Stats:
    1.8 gig amd
    128 ddr
    128 video
    xp
    newest jsdk / jre
    virus/adware/spyware clean

    Stats:
    1.8 gig amd
    128 ddr
128 videoIt is probably a memory issue. Netbeans consumes quite a bit of memory. On my workstation which has 1 gig of memory, Netbeans consumes 128 megabytes at startup. WinXP, email, virusscan and a few other necessities eat up about 400 megabytes on my PC, so when I'm using Netbeans my PC uses between 528 and 768 megabytes depending on what I am doing.
Your poor performance and failures are most likely due to memory constraints on your PC (128mb if I am reading your note correctly). If you want to use a robust IDE you are going to have to add additional memory to your PC, and even for modest command line programming your memory is borderline.
I use and really like Netbeans and have found it fast and stable for all the work I have done and it has been extensive. I am running on a AMD 64 3000+ with 1 gig memory, but ran reasonably well on a P4 1.3Ghz with 768 megabytes.
Sorry I don't have a better message for you.

  • How does windows service start oracle?

    Hi,
I am running 10gR2 on Windows XP SP 2
does anyone know what does actually happen when I go to
Start->Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and
    start OracleServiceORCL ?
    Is it:
    startup nomount ?
    startup mount ?
    startup open ?
    startup force ?
    Thanks

Also check the registry parameter ORA_<SID>_AUTOSTART under HKLM\software\oracle\HomeXX. If set to FALSE, when windows service starts, the instance is NOT started.

  • How does the Mac App Store compare to MacUpdate Desktop?

So far I have been using MacUpdate desktop to keep ALL my apps up-to-date, a very easy process. With the advent of the Mac App Store I now have to deal with two processes to achieve that.
What do all think about the usefulness of creating a separate and closed update environment with the Mac App Store? Is this better? Or not?

MacUpdate Desktop will find updates to over 30,000 (and growing every day - MacUpdate is updated 24/7) Mac apps, screen savers, widgets, pref panes, and plug-ins. The MAS will only manage and update apps you have purchases from Apple through the MAS, and will not update non-apps (widgets, pref panes, screen savers, or plug-ins) and the MAS does not contain many popular commercial applications from major software companies. The MAS also requires an Intel Mac and Mac OS 10.6 or later - MacUpdate Desktop will run on PPC and update PPC apps too, on Mac OS 10.5 or later. You can easily browse and search for apps on MacUpdate.com, and then with a single click, have MacUpdate Desktop download and install any app of interest. The community support on MacUpdate.com - reviews and similar app suggestions - make discovering new apps fast and easy. Any apps purchased from MacUpdate Promo will also be displayed in MacUpdate Desktop, allowing you to easily download and install them as well. MacUpdate actively develops and updates MacUpdate Desktop and continues to add new features and benefits. Feel free to contact MacUpdate with any further questions - desktop<at>macupdate<dot>com.

  • How does your iPad's volume compare to your Mac's?

We've been wondering if our iPad's volume is too low (a speaker problem? a software glitch?).
Without a decibel meter, I figured the easiest test would be to compare our MacBook Pro's sound levels to our iPad's highest volume setting.
We loaded up the same podcast on both devices and then switched back and forth while playing it to determine this.
In our case, it seems that the 75% level on the MBP matched the iPad's 100%. That was actually reassuring, especially given that the MBP's speakers are bigger and should have more bass and audio power.
What do you all find with your Mac vs. your iPad?
Note: We made no volume or equalizer adjustment to the podcast on either the Mac or the iPad.
For those unfamiliar with this trick to raise the volume of a music track or podcast, or the iPad in general, here's what to do.
On the Mac, you can select the podcast and do a File, Get Info, Options tab, Volume Adjustment or Equalizer Set change.
On the iPad, you hit the home button, tap on Settings, iPod, EQ, and pick Loudness (or others).
Such adjustments can work well in raising the volume of what you are playing. (The iPad change is a general one, not track specific.)

The external speaker on my iPad is, definitely, louder than my iPod Touch, but if there is any significant background noises, it is barely audible at full volume. Impossible to hear if you're in an especially crowded room and there is conversation going on. Especially true with video and movies. The headphone input seems to be about the same as my iPod Touch, though.
It would be nice to eek out some more volume from my iPad's external speaker, though, without having to use the battery draining EQ/Soundcheck settings. For more quieter passages in video and movies, the external speaker can be difficult to hear at times.

  • How does Sony Vegas Pro 12 compare to Premiere Pro CS6?

About 2 months ago, I purchased Premiere Pro CS6 retail box version from Best Buy.  With everything going to the CC, I can't get upgrades unless I join the CC.  This is NOT something I want to do!  I would like to know if the chroma keying and image stabilization in Sony Vegas pro 12 are just as good or similar to Premiere Pro? I already read about how to transfer the product license on the Adobe website.  If I decide to make the switch, I will list my Premiere Pro on Ebay. Another reason why I may want to get Vegas Pro is because I found out about the AVCHD bug in Premiere AFTER I purchased it.  It has been over a year and Adobe has still not fixed the bug. I have a feeling they will never fix the bug because of the new CC vesion.  I am currently about half way through the classroom in a book from Adobe and have not yet edited any of my own videos.  My video camera is a Canon Vixia HF S20 and my computer is a new Dell XPS 8500 with Core i7 and 12 GB of ram. Just a bit frustrated on what to do.  If I can't sell my Premiere Pro for a good enough price, I will keep it and switch to Vegas or some other program after it becomes obsolete.

You can download a fully functional demo of Sony Vegas 12 Pro.  That's what I did.  So far I like it and will be making the switch to Sony Vegas 12 Pro.
They also have Suite version which include HitFilm 2 Ulimate.  This program is like After Effects.  I haven't started playing with that yet.
Also, there is Movie Studio 12 Platinum Visual Effects Suite 2.  That's a mouth full.  Anyhow, it is based on Sony Vegas 12 and it comes with HitFilm 2 Express.  The Express version is a stripped down version of HitFilm 2 Ulimate.  The Express version is still a great program for adding effects.  For some people Movie Studio 12 is all they will need,
Both version, Vegas and Movie Studio, have GPU acceleration which is really nice.
I also just picked up Corel PaintShop Pro X5 Ultimate.  It sells for $69.95 and it can open and save .PSD files.  So I don't have to worry about all of the .PSD files I saved in Photoshop
Right now I have CS5 and CS6.  Premiere CS6 has a lot of bug, the AVCHD spanning clips, slow motion that jitters, caching problem, slower exports, etc.

  • How does one run a *.exe with a Java program?

    Hi,
I'm looking for a way to run an executable (*.exe) or batch file (*.bat) from within a Java program.
Any suggestions, leads, or examples appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Runtime.getRuntime.exec("pathTo/yourapp.exe");
For any type of interpreted scripts, the interpreter should be added:
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec({ "command.com", "mybat.bat"});
    or
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec({"/bin/sh", "configure.sh"});

  • How does one run a shell script at system startup?

    Hi,
I am trying to unmount my Boot Camp hard drive on my MacBook Pro. Now what I could do is create an automator action, save it as an application and then put it into my user´s login items. I am wondering though - shouldnt it be possible to run a simple shell script command like +diskutil unmount /Volumes/"Boot Camp"+ sometime during the startup process?
Or to put it another way - is there an easy way to do this or do i have to create an manage a daemon through launchd ?
Your help is very much appreciated.

sorry I forgot to mention that there is a bug in Lingon which creates a plist incorrectly if you enter your script explicitly on line 2. At least I haven't been able to make it work. A workaround I always use it the following.
Save your script as a *plain text* file from your favorite text editor. change the extension to .sh and make the file unix executable. Now, when you ccreate a launch daemon using Lingon, enter the path to that file instead of the script itself.
    This always works for me.
    Good luck!
