How download emails in IMAP folders?

I store many emails in folders (not Inbox / Sent) on an IMAP email account (not iCloud).
In Mail App then my inbox/sent IMAP folders are auto-sync'd and all email messages downloaded from server to Mail App. Great. But it seems that mail messages in an IMAP folder are only downloaded if I click on the related folder, so do download email messages in 100 folders then I need to click one-by-one on each folder. Email messages that are not downloaded clearly do not appear in any search functionality with Mail App.
Is there a setting or way to force Mail App to download email messages with IMAP folders?

You could search within the account in question, not globally:
# Right-click on the account name in the folder list to the left
# select "Search Messages" from the menu
# enter your search criteria, use the [+] button to add further lines
# in the result list, you should see "Location" as a column

How can synchronized local imap folders be migrated to a new computer, without new download from imap server, so that everything is working as before?
I only managed to import synchronized folders (from old computer) to local folders in thunderbird at the new computer. Then I tried to move the messages to the folder of the imap account at the new computer where I temporarily limited the synchronization to one month. When I remove this limit the thunderbird program starts to redownload all the messages again nonetheless.
Since I have a dual boot system (Windows/Linux, thunderbird is installed twice) and have to pay for every megabyte, this is very annoying.

Have you considered using a shared profile folder for the dual boot? so the two remain in sync?v It will require a drive both operating systems can access, but most people who dual boot have such. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
otherwise copy the entire profile, not parts of it.

  • How can I rearrange IMAP folders with multiple accounts in Mail?

    Hi all,
I switched to the Mac in 2004, but I've never really used Mail (been using Entourage). I set up an IMAP account in Mail, and was very impressed. So I decided to set up my other IMAP account, too. Now things are a bit messed up. I have these folders
    Inbox
    Drafts
    Sent
    Junk
    Trash
    Email1
    Email2
Under Email1 and Email2 are all the IMAP folders for the respective email address, except Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Junk and Trash are separate, and each of those folders has a folder in it called Email1 and one called Email2. How can I change this so that I just ahve the Email1 and Email2 folders, and everything appears under those?
On a less important note, is there any way to make Mail ignore IMAP folders? My email server creates a folder called '.mailboxes' for each IMAP account, and just stores some of its information in there, nothing I want in Mail. So is there a way I can hide this .mailboxes folder?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi mr max pie whatever.
This is actually one of Mail’s best features and cannot be changed.
Instead of grouping mailboxes by account, Mail groups them by purpose first (and uses the account name to differentiate the individual mailboxes associated with each account), then groups by account the remaining mailboxes that don’t belong to any of the standard groups.
This has the advantage of letting you choose at any time, and independently for each mailbox type, whether you want to look at your Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc. mailboxes as if you had just one of them shared by all accounts (i.e. an aggregate), or look at each of the corresponding individual mailboxes separately.
As to the “.mailboxes” folder that you’d rather not see there, I believe Mail shouldn’t show it if the name begins with a period. Moreover, I’ve troubleshooted a few cases where the problem was the opposite, i.e. the user had renamed a mailbox with a leading period and it became inaccessible as a result. I don’t know why Mail behaves so inconsistently in this regard. If all the server-stored mailboxes were subfolders of a parent folder, you could solve the problem by typing the name of the parent folder in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > IMAP Path Prefix...

  • How to correctly map IMAP folders?

I have setup my Yahoo email account in Mail app in Lion.  It automatically works via IMAP.
However my problem is that certain folders are not mapping to the correct folders in Yahoo.  For example, if I delete a message in the Mail app on Lion, it moved it to the Trash directory in Mail, but when i check online in Yahoo, it has created a new directory called Deleted Items, and has moved the deleted message there.
I want to correctly map the Trash folder in the Mail app, to the correct Trash folder in Yahoo.
    Please help.

You can forward your .me address to a different email address. Assuming you're using iCloud, go to the iCloud.com website, open Mail and settings. You can forward your address from there. You can set it to delete the messages from the iCloud address once forwarded. If you forward to another address and don't choose to delete the messages from the .me account, then it won't delete from the .me account when deleting from the other address. You would have to do that from the account then.
I don't understand the first part of your post. Maybe you misunderstood or I didn't explain correctly. You can only sync the main mailboxes in Mail to those corresponding IMAP mailboxes (in other words, you can only put Inbox, sent, drafts, trash, & junk Imap mailboxes under Mail's main corresponding mailbox---the inbox is automatic and you have no control over that). The rest of your IMAP mailboxes will remain in Mail's sidebar, but they are still IMAP mailboxes. You can select those mailboxes in the sidebar under the IMAP folder and whatever you do with messages there, it will sync with the other devices that show those mailboxes.
If I'm missing your point, please explain.

  • How do I move email in aol folders to my gmail account?

I figured out how to move current email in aol to a folder in gmail.
How do I move aol folders of email to gmail, where I want them to remain in those folders?

Yes, AOL supports IMAP, and I have an account set up in TB: http://gsfn.us/t/422mi
Set up the AOL account as IMAP in TB, and once the folders have downloaded, drag the messages to Gmail IMAP folders, assuming you have Gmail set up in TB as IMAP.

  • Can I download emails from a web mail account? If so how? thank you?

How can I download emails from a web mail account into Thunderbird please

If the account can be set up with programs like TB, simply add the account, starting from File/New(or AppMenu/New Message)/Existing Mail Account. If TB doesn't detect the right settings, enter them manually according to the account provider's requirements. If the provide offers IMAP access, all of the webmail folders will be downloaded. If POP only is offered, the Inbox will be downloaded.

  • How do I import all folders and saved messages from another email address?

I'm using Mac OS X. Only my inbox messages have imported. I'm trying to import from my GoDaddy email account.

''re : Only my inbox messages have imported.''
This sounds like you have created a POP mail account.
Pop mail accounts can only get access and download from server Inbox to Thunderbrd mail account Inbox. This is not a Thunderbird quirk; it is how all POP mail accounts work.
    There is a workaround.
    In Thunderbird
    * Move all good emails from Inbox to other suitable folders.
    * Delete any emails you do not want.
    * Right click on Inbox and select : 'Compact'
Now you have an empty Inbox which will make it easier to identify emails downloaded from different folders.
    * Log on to webmail account using a browser.
    * Move all emails from one of your folders into Inbox.
    * In Thunderbird select to 'Get Messages'
    * Thunderbird will download any emails not previously downloaded to the Inbox.
    * Create a suitable folder and move all those emails into it.
Repeat this action to move emails in other folders into webmail Inbox and then download them.
This will get emails from server folders into Thunderbird.
From then onwards any new mail coming into server Inbox will get downloaded to Thunderbird mail account Inbox, so this workaround would only need to be done once.
    '''Note:'''
Pop mail accounts usually download and delete off server, so if you do not want this to occur, check this first:
Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
    OR
right click on mail account in Flder Pane and select 'Settings'
then 'Server Settings' for mail account.
    * Select 'Leave messages on server'
If you want to auto delete some emails, you can select either ot both of these options:
    * For at most xx days
    * Until I delete them
    * Click on 'OK'
If a POP mail account does not do what you want, you would need to see if your webmail account allows 'IMAP forwarding' and select that option.
Then create a new IMAP mail account in Thunderbird.
This would allow you to subscribe to see any folders on the server.
IMAP accounts mean that you get a remote view of the server folders, so anything you do in Thunderbird will also occur on the server. eg: if you delete an email in Thunderbird it will delete off server as you are seeing one in the same folders.
In both cases it is always advisable to periodically create a backup:
    Profile Folder location:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
    Backup info:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup
    Imap backup:

  • Email IMAP folders / gmail labels invisible

After os update I can only see my email account in the mail app. All the IMAP folders which are represented by labels in gmail are gone. I can't see my folders. I can't access the trash for example because it is not shown in the left menu pane.

Thanks a lot for your reply, and thanks a lot for the link to that article. I appreciate it.
According to that article, if I move a message to a folder in Apple Mail, that means a label is applied to the message on the web. But, in my experience, moving a message doesn't move the entire thread, so you end up spliting the thread in two. Also, the iPhone/iPod Touch has no Copy function. So, I can't add multiple labels to one message.
Is Gmail IMAP more trouble than it's worth? The iPhone/iPod Touch doesn't show threading, which puts things off to a bad start. And the concept of moving messages into folders is totally different to tagging threads with labels. I currently can't understand how anyone uses Gmail IMAP successfully on their iPhone/iPod Touch, without making a total mess of what's going on online, in Gmail on the web.

  • How does Mail 4 organize folders for IMAP vs POP in sidebar?

Can someone explain how Mail organizes the sidebar for POP vs IMAP and what would happen if I switched totatlly to IMAP?
I'm a bit confused by how Mail is organizing the folders in the sidebar for an IMAP account. Way back in Panther days I had an IMAP mac.com email for a year or two and if I recall correctly I saved it in On My Mac as a folder. Same for a POP account I was getting rid of.
Since then I have had only POP accounts (including a gmail account). I managed to keep the inboxes (at least) in sync by not removing mail from the server so that my ipod, iphone, and other Macs can log into the mail server too. This has worked OK. However, since I send a lot of mail from my iPhone, I'm wondering if it's time to switch to IMAP since I will be giving up several ISP issued email addresses that only use POP.
I signed up for a new gmail account recently and it set up as an IMAP account by default. Now there's a folder for the new IMAP Gmail account at the bottom of the sidebar under On My Mac folders. It doesn't have an inbox or sent folder but does have a "sent items" folder.
Additionally, at the top of the sidebar is "Mailboxes" with Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Trash and under these are a subfolder for each POP account and also one for the new IMAP gmail. It seems weird to have the inbox and sent items so far away from the rest of the folders. I'm also not clear if it's keeping 2 copies on my hard disk one in the top mailboxes under "Sent" and one at the bottom Gmail folder under "sent items".
Finally, I'm wondering would it be prudent to back up all of the existing POP mailboxes or move everything to On My Mac before switching some of the other mail accounts over to IMAP? I will want to keep archives of the ISP emails when I cancel my service with them.
Thanks for any clarification and advice.

This is what Gmail help suggests to set

Store junk messages on the server > checked
Delete junk messages when > Never
    Trash:
Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox > do NOT check
Store deleted messages on the server > do NOT check
These settings in Mail on your Mac or other device is what you want that device to do with these folders. If you want to be able to start a message on an iPhone and finish it on your Mac, then check the setting on the iPhone to store the draft message on the server. Then, it will be available on all other devices set up with the account to finish it. You would need to set each device to the settings you wish. You really don't want to store anything useless like junk mail or trash on the server and take up server space.
    You Wrote:
As I understand it, the IMAP keeps a local cache and the servers synced. However, Mail sends email and stores it in the Sent folder and the web interface sends email from the Sent Mail folder. Can't I tell Mail to store outbound mail in Sent Mail?
As I understand it, if you send a message from your IMAP account from Mail on your Mac, it will also copy it to the Sent Items folder in IMAP to be seen from any device. If you delete it from the IMAP Sent Items folder, you won't see it on any other device. It will still be in the Sent Mail on the Mac you sent it from. That is a local folder on that particular device.
The advantage of the IMAP account is that you can control email from multiple devices either locally on them if it is set up with that account or from any browser without having to physically sync all of them together. Like you said, you have to leave the messages on the server to view them on other devices and it also takes up storage on each device.
If you want to store them locally to be saved on one computer, then move or copy them from the IMAP folder to a local folder on that computer.
As Barney suggested, enable the advanced IMAP controls in the Labs section on the gmail website settings. That will give you much more control on what you see in Mail on your Mac.
For example, after enabling this feature, I went  to the Labels section in settings on the website and unchecked all boxes to show in IMAP. the only one left is Inbox which you can't disable. When I go to Mac Mail, I don't see any gmail folders except an Inbox subfolder for gmail, a gmail subfolder for sent, and a gmail subfolder for trash.
I have also checked the box in the Mac account settings on the Trash to move deleted messages to the trash, but not store them on the server. That way, a copy goes to the trash on my Mac and it puts the subfolder in the Mail Trash.
I have also set Mail Preferences in gmail under the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab to Auto Expunge off and immediately delete messages forever. I did this to keep the gmail site clean and to give all control to my Mac since I never pull it up at the gmail website except when away on vacation.

  • How do I create new folders in mail on IPad and IPhone for saving emails?

How do I create new folders in mail on IPad and IPhone for saving emails?

You can't do it on the iPad you would need to do it on your computer and the folder will be seen by your account on the iPad and iPhone only if they are IMAP and Exchange accounts. POP accounts are not supported for folders.

  • Apple Mail is not auto-downloading all IMAP folders

I have several IMAP mail accounts set up in Apple Mail (MobileMe, Gmail, Yahoo).  I just finally figured out how to set up the Yahoo account, but it doesn't seem to check and show new messages properly.  Often the new messages don't know up.  Sometimes a few will show (Inbox items), but other folders won't update to show unread/new messages unless I click a particular folder--then the new messages would appear.
Surely I shouldn't have to click each and every IMAP folder that I've created in order to have them refreshed to show new emails.
Any ideas?  Have I set something up wrong?  Or just misunderstanding how IMAP folders work?
I notice that this behavior often happens on my iPhone and iPad.  I have to click a folder in order to find out whether or not it has any new items.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
