How Durable/Strong Are Our Macbooks?

Hey all, just curious. I sometimes worry that I'm too rough with mine, as we all tend to get complacent and not think about things. Just wanted to get your take!
Ethan

I use a macbook 4.1 (from mid 2008). The plastic is very susceptible to damage (much more susceptible than my work Acer from 2006). I believe the main problems are caused by two plastic ridges that are at the top of the bezel about 1" from the sides of the computer. Over time it will break off pieces of the bezel and the palmrest.
Apple corrected this design feature in later macbooks (the ridge runs the entire circumference of the bezel which reduces the force being applied to the palmrest and bezel when you close it). I believe this problem applies only to the 3.1 and 4.1.
You can figure out what model of macbook you have by clicking on the Apple logo on the top-left of your screen, then "about this mac", and "More Info..."
BTW the plastic on the top and bottom of my mac also has various cracks.
So, the rule of thumb is be very careful with it if you have one of these models.

  • How durable are MacBook pros

Hello, I have a MacBook Pro from mid 2012 and I would like to know how durable it is I am a rather clumsy person so I am during how much punishment they can take as I am scared that even if I put my computer down to hard it will break so I would like to know how durable it is.

They are easy to dent, but pretty hard to break.
Spinning hard disks are another story. A fall from a couple of feet onto a hardwood floor is likely to damage it. They can be replaced but the information on it can be priceless.
Backups are a must. Use Time Machine or "clone" software and an external hard disk. Two backups are even better. Being the mechanical components they are, all hard disks will fail eventually, whether you abuse them or not.

  • How strong is the Macbook pro 13 hinge?

I have a 2011 high end macbook pro 13 and when ever I go to use it and look at the hinge, I always have doubts about the hinge. Why such a small peice of plastic as a hinge? I am wondering how much the hinge can take. Is it fragile(you can break the hinge by normal opening and closing) or is it durable (you can open and close it as much as you want and it won't break-of coarse there is a limit). Please give me an idea on how durable it is. I usually try to prevent from opening or closing it normally. I always baby my products and just want to stop my endless worry about the hinge. Please no bad comments. Thanks!

Strong enough that in normal use it should last 4-8 years without a problem. If you abuse it, Yanking it open and closed repeatedly, it may only last a very short time.
Why are you bothered by the strength? Is it not working correctly?

  • What is a quick alternative to launching an enterprise DPS app if Apple Store rejects the App? We are under a major deadline and can't wait for Apple. We want to host the app elsewhere. How do we host our DPS app on our client's website?

What is a quick alternative to launching an enterprise DPS app if Apple Store rejects the App? We are under a major deadline and can't wait for Apple to approve. We want to host the app elsewhere. How do we host our DPS app on our client's website? Thanks.

Unless I misunderstand the question, you can't do what you're asking to do. Apple doesn't allow you to bypass their store and host public apps on a website. The exception is an enterprise app, which requires an Enterprise account with both Apple and Adobe. This type of enterprise app can be distributed only within the company. If that's what you want to do, you can learn more here:

Another option is to add the development app to several devices and use those for your demo.

How do I get my Macbook Pro and iphone 5 to sync calendars in 2014? It worked fine in 2013, but the 2014 dates are blank on my Macbook. The all icloud is checked on my phone and the enable icloud account and push are selected on the Macbook.

Do the events from your iPhone calendar appear on icloud.com?  If not, go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Calendar (in the Calendars section) and make sure you have selected an iCloud calendar as your default.  If you haven't, make this change, then add a new event on your iPhone calendar and see if appears on icloud.com and your Mac now.

    Hello Halfback71,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.
If you are wondering how using multiple Apple IDs relate to iCloud, see Apple IDs and iCloud.
    Best of luck,

Everything that you have checked in your icloud settings will be shared between devices using the same Apple ID.  If you don't want icloud to share that information, then simply turn off that process under settings > icloud

  • How can I save an e-mail to documents on our macbook Air?

How can I save an e-mail to documents on our macbook Air?

It's pretty impossible to figure out what you're really trying to do ...
If you're literally trying to save an e-mail to your documents folder (which I doubt), then you can open the e-mail, do a File > Save As ... from Mail's menu and do it from there.
    Good luck.

Tap the Photos icon in the Dock at the bottom of of the screen.
If you don't see the photos there, tap Settings > iCloud
Turn Photo Stream off then back on then restart your iPad.
Hold the power button until "slide to power off" appears.  Slide to power off.  After it is off, press the power button to turn it back on

This is all just a partial answer since details will depend upon how you want to do it.

You'll need to get it all onto one iTunes collection on your Mac Pro, then sync the devices to that.  iTunes only lets you transfer purchases from a device, otherwise you have to use third party software.
I guess you could also look into getting iTunes Match.

Batteries can and have expanded when they are old and their useful life is over.  More often than not, there will be a warning generated in the battery display in the menu bar or in System Information>Power.  You may use a #00 Phillips driver and take off the bottom of the MBP and take out the battery.
    Ciao.

  • How durable is the macbook pro june 2012

I am wondering because, well I have a hardbody case on the bottom of my mbp and when i try to take it off i hear a noise and I fear that I may accidently dent or bend the unibody of the macbook so I am wondering how durable this macbook is?

Pretty durable - I've had MacBook Pros (and, before that, PowerBook G4s) and have never put a dent in the casing nor even scratched it. I don't know what sort of 'noise' you might be hearing when you take the cover off the bottom of your MacBook Pro - maybe it's the plastic on the 'cover'? But I don't think that you need to worry about the bottom casing being damaged if your 'cover' is from a reputable manufacturer such as Speck.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

I bought a used macbook pro from a friend. Software updates are available, but when I try to update, the computer asks for apple id and will only accept the former owner´s. How can I connect my macbook to my apple id?

The first thing you should do after acquiring a used computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
