How easily does iMovie drop frames?

I'm a new (very satisfied) Mac user, and I've just recently started making DVDs of my several miniDV tapes. My question is how easily dropped frames occur in iMovie when importing DV video from a camcorder? Up till now I haven't experienced any problems, as I've been careful not to do anything else apart from browsing the web while importing video. When working on a Windows PC platform I've often experienced dropped frames when multi-tasking, but the software I used had the option of automatically stopping the importing on a dropped frame, so I could quickly corrent the problem. iMovie doesn't seem to have a similar function, so dropped frames could sneek into my project unless I always checked the imported video thorougly.
So, in your experience, how much multi-tasking can my MacBook handle (it's the newest model, and also has 2GB of memory) without dropping frames? I can probably browse the web, but can I for example watch a video or listen to music without having to worry about dropped frames?
Any help would be much appreciated

Hi mm and welcome!
Dropped frames are generally the fault of unclean tape heads in the camera, or a glitch with the tape.
iMovie happily imports whatever digital video you throw at it, and I have certainly never seen any dropped frames that could be attributed to iMovie.
You should be fine multitasking with your specs. I also often surf the web while iMovie imports an hour's worth of video!
But when you get to the editing etc, I would close other applications. That also applies particularly to when iDVD is rendering/burning.

  • How do I stop dropped frames on playback?

I have been working on a project for several weeks. Everyting cooking along. It involves many time lines of fairly simple format - 2-6 audio tracks & 2-3 video tracks at most. Everything has been running smoothly until today when I started getting a "one or more frames were dropped during playback" message. This has happening quite frequently, on many sequences, without any changes to preferences, no windows overlapping & RT set to Safe. It is happening on several sequences which played through perfectly before. I am on a PowerBook 1.5GHz G4 running OS 10.4.7., FinalCut Pro 4.5. I am using a LaCie 300 GB external drive for this project. I have tried a number of solutions offered in discussions without succes. I am looking for practical solutions after many years on FinalCut Pro, & never having this level of frustration .
    Power book G4 (15 Titanium)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thank you all for your input. Here is further info to help explain the continuing problem. I am running a single LaCie 300 GB external hard drive with 156 GB available via firewired 800. Nothing else running on firewire. My internal 80 GB drive has 9 GB available. I have rebooted several times, coppied different timelines to a new sequence (this worked once a week ago), coppied to a new project, rendered all several times and there is nothing running in the background. I tried Michael's suggestion and exported self contained (to the same external drive) & played it in a new project. This worked fine, but still doesn't help me in editing. Still looking for suggestions. Update to my system info below in that I am running OS X 10.4.7, and was before dropped frames started happening.

  • Why does flash drop frames ??

I have been conducting some tests and am totally lost as to why flash based broadcasting drops frames.
The genral formula for calculating bitrate is :
    bitrate = Width x Height x FPS
Now if this value is lower than  Camera.bandwidth then why should flash still drop frames ?? Any assistance/ideas is greatly appreciated.
I have checked with FMS performance tab: bytes in is well bellow Camera.bandwidth as well , but still flash drops frames... why??

oh! you dont have to be an engeer to answer that. I reported you because i saw you had 306 points. Which means you had to be a serious guy giving a serious answer. If you had read my question (you may want to read it again just in case).. here is the answer to it that i could find on my own. There is no need to get things complicated, god created things simple eniough
    Refer to http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/media/Camera.html
You will see that when we apply setMode funtion to request a width, height and fps, flash will request the device for closest native settings of the camera.  I am pasting it here so everyone can read:
By default, Flash Player drops frames as needed to maintain image size. To minimize the number of dropped frames, even if this means reducing the size of the image, pass false for the favorArea parameter.
When choosing a native mode, Flash Player tries to maintain the requested aspect ratio whenever possible. For example, if you issue the commandmyCam.setMode(400, 400, 30), and the maximum width and height values available on the camera are 320 and 288, Flash Player sets both the width and height at 288; by setting these properties to the same value, Flash Player maintains the 1:1 aspect ratio you requested.
So as you see its a simple thing, nothing so complicated as NETWORKING, ALOHA , TCP/IP etc etc . If you wil notice all the situations i have stated, it clearly implies frame drop happens regardless of any bandwidth settings as soon as i go over a certain resolution.
    Haver a nice day! Cheers

  • Imovie dropping frames in playback

Icreated a project in imovie v 3.03, realized it was buggy, upgraded to v 5 HD, but still have the problem which is during any kind of playback, it's dropping lots of frames. The project and clips are on a firewire external (LaCie) HD with 35 Gb in that partition. The Mac HD that iMonie's on has 11GB available. What's going on?

Have you use a lot of audio clips in your project. If so, this thread has some tips:

  • How long does imovie update take

I need to use iMovie (first time in months) and all afternoon it has told me that it is updateing and can't be used while updating. How long should it take? How do I know when it finishes?
Or what will happen when I close down my computer in 30 minutes to take it home? There is no other indication of a download.

10.0.2 download is about 2 GB so unless you have a fast internet connection it may take a long time.  The update should resume automatically when you restart
    See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4485
The App Store shows a progress bar whilst the update is downloading and when it is installed the update will show in the recent updates list.

  • How do i resolve dropped frames in final cut pro hd academic 4.5?

i've tried all the suggestions in the "warning box"...i also remember seeing somewhere that the viewer and canvas windows shouldn't overlap or something?  should i throw salt over shoulder or wear a certain color or something?

Here are some things that may affect RT playback:
    1. Make sure you have enough free space on all hard drives; 10 to 20% free space is a good amount.
    2. Do not keep media and render files on your boot drive.  They should be stored on a 7200rpm hard drive that is either internal, or connected via Firewire or eSATA.  USB drives are not recommended.
    3. Keep the Canvas window at "Fit to Window" or smaller, but never larger than 100%.
    4. Turn of Canvas overlays such as Wireframe, Title Safe or level warnings.
    5. Only use media that works natively in FCP.  Do no use video formats like H.2.64.
    6. Render the Timeline fully; make sure all render types are checked in the Sequence->Render menus.

  • How well does imovie work on MBA2011?

Tell if you have I7 or I5.

I Movie Actully Workes Great On Both The i7 and i5 For Standerd Editing. But Since It Has Somthing To Do With Movies I Prefer You Get The Model With The Most Hard Drive Space Like (128GB) If You Do Alot Of Video Editing. The Resolution On The 13 Inch Is Slightly Better Than The 11 Inch Model(But I Find The 11inch Sharper). So If You Want The Regular Editing Go For The i5 Or If You Want Proformance Go For The i7

  • Avoiding dropped frames?

So I'm trying to switch from iMovie back to FCP. In trying to capture an entire tape (hitting the play button and Capture Now button) I notice that there were five clips where there were dropped frames. In reviewing the tape I notice (with the naked eye and ear) no digital drop-out. So, in my deduction the dropped frames is occuring in either the computer and/or program. How can I eliminate dropped frames and have one clip to work with?

Are you capturing to your system drive? Do you have any antivirus software installed and active?
Search is your friend, and will bring up just about every solution you could imagine for getting your system to the point where it won't drop frames. There's also a full troubleshooting section in the manual devoted to it (at least in the Final Cut 5 manual).
Post what you've tried to fix it, that'll help narrow down the responses you'll get.

    Dropped frames on capture/export
    Shane's Stock Answer #12:
    1) Do not capture to your main system drive. Since it is busy reading the operating system and application files, it will intermittently drop frames during capture.
    2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn't cooperate with it very well.
If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin's script to shut it off before you use FCP:
Kevin Mamajek, "Capture Now and Virex 7.5.x", 08:02am Mar 5, 2005 CDT
    3) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn't, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.
    4) Trash the FCP preference file:

  • "Capturing drop-frame media into a non-drop frame clip" error message

I've logged tapes from what will partly be a 3-camera multi-clip project, and have begun to batch capture.
Logged all but one tape some weeks ago, and captured one tape at the time.
Went to batch capture the balance, today. First tape capture went fine. On trying to capture the next tape in the batch I'm getting this message as FCP begins the process:
WARNING: You are about to capture drop-frame media to a non drop-frame clip. If you proceed, you may experience changes in logged in and out points, problems relinking media, or removal of master clip relationships.
In analyzing the situation, the only reason I can think of for the error message is that some of the reels were logged on a DSR-11 that had been set to NON drop-frame, and for which I didn't have the remote control to change the setting.
I haven't run into this while capturing other clips, but those may have been captured via a different deck that does only drop-frame.
So, I'm looking at next steps:
1: Capture anyway and possibly regret that I did that.
(One person on another list reported the same problem, that he had ignored it without any obvious complications.)
2: Relog all the problem clips using my current deck, speeding up the process by using the "go to" window to drive the tape to the existing in and out points and then marking i/o's...
    Or...
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Ted.

We've been seeing this stupid error message since v3 and it's never mattered in the slightest. It is always incorrect, anyway. The clips are always drop and the sequences are always drop. It's an FCP programming glitch/bug/screwup. Someday they may or may not fix the mechanism that triggers the warning.

  • Why SDK always generates non-drop-frame clips?

I've created a sequence in Premiere: NTSC DV, Codec: DV NTSC, 29.97fps, 720x480, Drop-Frame Timecode.
When I try to render a clip with MXF OP1a preset file (DV25 NTSC) by SDK, it always generates non-drop-frame clip.
If I use 'File->Export->Media...' with same preset file, it's drop-frame exactely.
'Drop-frame' seems to be an option from sequence and there is no place to config it in preset settings dialog.
How can I generate drop-frame clip by SDK (exporter controller)?

I also meet the same problem.
I have created a 'Export Controller' plug-in. when export media using this plug-in, and choose the preset 'DV 25 NTSC', MXF OP1a.
Confirm that sequence setting is 29.97 drop-frame.
But export mxf file is always NDF.
However, using Export->Media, and choose MXF OP1a  +  DV 25 NTSC, will export DF mxf file.
Could you help to double check it?
I have check from code,  it will get correct result (DF or NDF) after call function 'GetTimecodeDropFrame' in 'Sequence Info Suite' , so what's the problem would be?
    Thanks,
    Iris

  • How well does the Droid Charge do when dropped accidentally?

how well does the Droid Charge do when dropped accidentally? any screen or internal damages?
I'm probably going to have some kind of rubberized case.

Please consider getting an otterbox commuter case at least from amazon or otterbox.com
the defender series otterbox case with screen protector case isn't being shipped yet so i am using
the otterbox commuter case with verizon wireless store's 3pack of screen protectors - i do not like screen protectors but verizon sells the ones for the charge specifcally and it will
hold me over just fine until defender ships in august or september
either case helps to not accidentally press the power button easily while holding this droid Charge
    there's my advce
ps these add bulk to phone i like the commuter case it is way sturdy polycarbonate or whatever STRONG black plastic with port covers except for hdmi that already has a cover built into phone
the defender series will be bulkier

  • IMovie 3,4 and 5 drops frames

    Hi Boffs,
iMovie was dropping frames while importing from my Canon DV. Did the filevault thing, unplugged all the other firewire items, no change. My ibook 1.2 Ghz G4 running 10.3.5 was fine though, and if I import on the laptop, burn a CD of the (very small) iMovie file and try to play it on the G3, it still drops frames. Am I simply a victim of slower processor speeds? Surely other people on here have used iMovie on a G3? There is no improvement for other versions of iMovie (well at least 3 & 5)
    Thanks if you can help
    Tim

OK, you have two problems, one cosmetic and one serious.
The cosmetic problem is playback on the 450Mhz. It doesn't affect the quality of the video itself.
The serious problem is exporting back to tape on the 450MHz. This can be avoided by taking the external FW disk to the iBook.
Your iMac should be able to handle iMovie 4:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93598
You are above the minimum specs.
Are you running anything else but iMovie? Playing music in iTunes? Your Fax app waiting for incoming faxes? iPhoto running? Surfing the web?

  • Dropped frames - iMovie vs FCE only from Canon, not Sony

I have tapes shot on my new Canon Elura 100, SD, that import without complaint into iMovie but show lots of dropped frames in Final Cut Express. Imports from by onld Sony TRV never have a problem. Any idea what is going on?
Note - I used a Sony TRV-30 for years without a problem. I just picked up a Canon Elura 100. Now I get dropped frames all over the place on FCE import for tapes shot with the Canon. Out of interest I tried importing the tape shot on the Canon using my old Sony and I get the same problem. Tapes shot on the Sony have no problem. So evidently there is something on the Canon recorded tapes FCE does not like. The playback appears fine. iMovie import goes without a hitch. FCE I get a dropped frames notice and there are pauses in the playback of the imported video.

I rechecked and saw I was also starting to get dropped frames with the Sony, something I had not seen in years. Evidently there is something in my system now (perhaps 10.4.9?) that FCE2 does not like. I rebooted to an older installatioin of 10.3.9 and now both cameras are coming in without dropped frames.
Note: there were other Firewire devices connected, but not powered up.
I did not try changing the setup. Once I was in 10.3.9 everything came in.

  • Does OL show dropped frames sommewhere?

    Hi,
Have searched help file etc. for info, but no luck.
Does OL show dropped frames if the come while capturing? I am almost sure I have no dropped frames, but I would like OL to tell me if I get some.
    Thanks.
    /Ulf

Live capturing with OL means a sustained transfer rate of around 3.5 MB/s and even USB externals should be able to handle that easily. Things get different when you go HD-SDI, then you need at least 200 Mb/s and no laptop can do that without an extensive external disk array, at least 4 disks in raid0.

    Could have been mine!
Happily this is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.
Delete iMovie 9 (just drag it to the trash). Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife 6 install disks.
Now re-install iMovie 9. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.
Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.
Alternatively you could try this method, suggested by poster Uitech:
Open a terminal and type "touch /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iLife08.plist"
    (No quotes)
Install iMovieHD6 from the iLife 6 install disk.
This works with both Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs.
