How far do you go?

As far as sharpening goes. When you are modifying your photos and saving them, do you sharpen all of them, or do you only sharpen the ones that are only really in your face blurry?

Louise,
This is a subjective call. More often than not, I sharpen slightly as the LAST step. Most of the pictures coming out my digital camera benefit from this. However, over sharpening can be deleterious, as the result will look fake. A somewhat "blurry" picture is not necessarily bad. This is art!

  • GTX675M Overclocking - how far can you go?

    Seems hard to find numbers about this one.
    I hae a GT60 with the GTX675M
    But how far have you guys been overclocking this card?
    So standard clocks are 632/1500
    I've already pushed it to 735/1725
    Tested it on Crysis 3 and it worked without glitches. Temps were around 93°C. Seems I can push it even harder? But to late to test.
    I did not turn on the fan-button, so fan-speed was controlled by motherboard.
    I did some OC testst with Kombustor and it locked up when clocking it lower then what I did above, don't know why, so I thought I couldn't get higher then 700/1700. Seems I can.
    PS.: If someone else found numbers from this card in laptops, let me know!
    PS2.: I guess when the 675M breaks, I can put in a 675MX, not? Same slot and all... Should also run even cooler I think, since it's a Kepler then.

    Depends on what you want and what you are willing to sacrifice
    If lower RAM speed is OK, select 5:4 to maintain DRAM within spec. You should be able to get 3.2GHz easily - possibly higher too if you have the right components and tweak it right  :D
    You may also need to review cooling if heat tends to rise with extreme loads and major overclocking.

  • Music videos; how far have you increased the default volume?

    I'm sure you've all noticed that when listening to music videos through the regular playlist (ie: not via videos list) the quality of the sound is rather poor in comparison to regular music.
    I've done a "Get Info" on each of my music videos (purchased through iTunes) and boosted the sound up 2 notches, however I still find they are comparably quieter than the other music.
    How far should I go before the sound quality might become distorted?

    Thanks for the fast, technically astute reply! Very reassuring - and truly appreciated!!

  • How far must you stand to record a person on video camera on the Ipad Air 2?

    How far away must you stand to record a 6 foot person on a Ipad Air 2?

    Experiment. Pick a wall near you, guestimate how tall 6 feet is (for me I can go about 8 inches above my head), step back until you get your whole 'person' in the frame.
    I'm going to guess about 8 feet away, give or take. Of course anything beyond that you'll still have the whole person in the frame, just smaller.
    However if you want them to speak and have the iPad's mic to pick it up well, the closer you are and quieter the room the better.

  • String.replaceAll how far can you take it?

    Hi,
    I want to do 2 (or 3) simple string conversions like this:
    1. in: "CustomerOrderHistory" out: "customer_order_history"
    2. in: "customer_order_history " out: either "CustomerOrderHistory" or "customerOrderHistory" (either ok)
    Actually number 2 is no problem, I did it like this:
    public static String mixedCaseToCaseInsensitiveLower (String input) {
         return input.replaceAll("([a-z])([A-Z])", "$1_$2").toLowerCase();
    }No problem works fine, but now I'm wondering if it's possible to implement case 1 in a one liner like that.
    Of course, I I can see how I could code it with a specific routine, but I'd like to know if the replaceAll method can do it for me.
    So far I have this:
    return input.toLowerCase().replaceAll("((_)([a-z]))", "$1")This just removes any underscores that occur before a lower case character, but I don't see any way to tell it that the character after the underscore, ie "$1" should be upper cased.
    It may be that I'm asking too much, or it may be that I've missed something... tell me what you think,
    Thanks
    Iain

    You're asking too much. :/
    You have to process the replacement text before it gets inserted into the result string, which means you can't use replaceAll(). You can, however, do it he long way, using Matcher's appendReplacement() and appendTail() methods:  private static Pattern p = Pattern.compile("(?:$|_)([a-z])");
      // to leave the first letter lowercase, use "_[a-z]"
      public static String toCamelCase(String input)
        Matcher m = p.matcher(input);
        StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
        while (m.find())
          m.appendReplacement(sb, m.group(1).toUppercase());
        m.appendTail(sb);
        return sb.toString();
      }Of course, with about the same amount of effort, you do the same thing with indexOf(), charAt(), and a for loop. Now, if we could combine Matcher with the new Formatter (sprintf) class, we could really have some fun...

  • How far can you stretch Pages?

    I was just recently commissioned to design and layout a 48 page quarterly magazine. I'm an experienced designer and my first inclination was to use Adobe InDesign. I own iWork, but have thus far left it untouched.
    Are there any Pages pros around here? If so:
    1. Do you think Pages would be capable of producing a quality 48-page publication? That is, something on par with InDesign?
    2. I realize that it is designed to be easy-to-use. Is it - like many other iApps - capable of being pushed beyond that ease of use? How much creative freedom does it allow?
    Thanks in advance for any feedback!

    I've used InDesign and Word much less in the last two years than I had in the past and but there are two reasons why I wouldn't embark on your project with Pages: 1) 48 pages and 2) you say you've left Pages untouched this far. What I'd recommend instead is that having created the document in InDesign, at some point you recreate at least part of it with Pages.
    Having picked up iWork '05 and spent a weekend playing with it, I decided to recreate a tri-fold brochure I'd already done in InDesign. It was a breeze and when I dropped by the print shop to see how it printed I was quite pleased. Of course the shop didn't have Pages but I gave them my PDF output. I'd been putting off redesigning the monthly tech newsletter and emboldened by the brochure experiment, I grabbed Pages and did the redesign. I've been using Pages for that newsletter and another I write.
    However, every summer I do the local county fair's yearbook and my temple's yearbook. I didn't even think about doing them in Pages. It all boils down to control for me. Pages is sort of a neither this nor that kind of creature and one of my frustrations has always been the inability to grab objects conveniently. Layers is another frustration. Further, while I've never had any speed issues with Pages, I never doubted that others did and I felt certain that at some point, with a complex document I'd begin to find it.

  • Testing DVD's. How far do you go?

    Just a general question on testing DVD's. What is sufficient for delivering to a client? Do you watch the whole DVD? How many different players? Is there software that will test it for you? What does everyone do?
    Just wondering...
    - Tom W.

    There is never enough testing that you can do, I know I pound the heck out of the DVDs and can still miss things (this also depends on the complexity of the disc) the more players that you have the better to try them out on. And you should watch all the material on the DVD to make sure everything worked out properly in the encoding and muxing process.
    DVD SP gives you some warnings, such as missing links or assets, and it is good to watch for them. Also take care to follow all the suggestions you see here for compatabilty (encoding rates, A.Pack/Dolby, etc.) Many problems can be avoided.
    Another thing to try to do (and this is probably the hardest) is to step off from a project before proofing. I know this one is almost impossible with deadlines and so forth, but if you can burn a disc to look at and then wait a bit of time before looking, you may be able to catch more. Sometimes you can get just too close to what you are working on. (Along the same lines if you have someone else to look at things, they will catch things, such as typos or other elements that you have just looked at too much to see anymore. This also serves as a reality check to some degree, after sitting in front of the computer and encoders you can drive yourself crazy because you see every fault that you would love to clear up, yet no one else would ever notice.)
    Some of this also depends on the scope of the project and how it is going to be used. For instance, if you are just dropping wedding footage on a DVD for someone thaat is pretty straightforward (and subject to the issues what DVD Players will properly play DVDs from computer burns), you can do it fairly quickly, check links, navigation, etc.
    If it is going out for replication, have a QC run on a test disc. Though it costs some money (and even more if they catch something to redo test disks) it is better than replicating the discs.
    Also Trai Forrester, for instance, offers services http://www.dvdverification.com/public/department49.cfm where he will do some testing. If you have a big project it is something to consider, especially if you have not gone through the drill before of preparing DLTs and dealing with replicators.
    So all of it comes down to balancing time and the scope of the project.

  • OWB 10Gr2, how far can you take the Data Profile Editor?

    After working with the Data Profile Editor a bit, it seems like it has a lot of potential, but I can't quite figure out how to get it to do the thing I'm most in need of.
    The problem: Tables in a source database that have CHAR columns instead of VARCHAR columns (also date fields stored as text in the format YYYYMMDD).
    After generating a couple of correction maps, it seems like I should be able to do these simple transforms in the correction (it converts fields that look like numbers but stored in text with the to_number function in the resulting map), but I can't figure out where exactly to tell it to change the data type from CHAR to DATE, or where to tell it to TRIM the CHAR column before converting it to VARCHAR.
    The only alternative that I can see is a mapping with dozens and dozens of expression operators to TRIM and TO_DATE the fields. This is a nasty and time consuming process.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric
    Any advice?

    In chapter 14 of the OWB User Guide, it mentions that the Data Profile Editor can be used in such a way:
    "Data rules can be used in two ways to cleanse data and correct schemas. The first way is to convert a source schema into a new target schema where the structure of the new tables strictly adheres to the data rules. The new tables would then have the right data types, constraints are enforced, and schemas are normalized. The second way ..."
    It doesn't go into any deatil how to do any conversion of data types or data with data rules, however.

  • How far can you push java mathematically

    Can you do calculous in java. Like differentiation etc.

    If you ask some folks in this forum they will tell
    you that GUI-builders are terrible, if you ask others
    their opinion, they will tell you they love them, and
    in the mean time this thread will degenerate into a
    debate on the relative merits.I think the debate has nothing to do with the merits of GUI builders and everything to do with whether or not he can do mathematics WITHOUT a sophisticated UI. I think he'll have his hands full solving the calculus problems he has in mind without adding to his troubles by worrying about a UI.
    Do it with plain text at first. Once you have that working, then worry about the UI. It'll be a good way to separate UI from the rest of the problem - a good practice.

  • Animation... how far can you go?

    Hi there. I wanted to know if it´s ok to work on basic cartoon animations with MOTION. What we are trying to do is a 2 minute short animation about a clown... nothing complicated. Something maybe like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xTeazHHHwk
    If not what software do you recommend?
    Thanks for the help

    i think you could do that primarily in Motion 3 yes. You could animate the mouth with audio behaviours to the V/O if you wanted. You may want to do your drawing in illustrator and convert to Motions shape layers for the most flexibility. There is a script here to do it.. http://www.motionsmarts.com/downloads/IL2MotionShape.zip
    After Effects would also be more than capable, using the new puppet tool might be a help here.

  • How far do you have to sticka CD or DVD into the slot drive?

    I literally have to stick the entire CD or DVD into the slot before it picks it up. Even if I just stick it in after 85% of the disk is in the slot, it'll take it and get stuck with some of the disk outside. Is this normal? Should I take it to a genius bar?
    White MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I don't have a Macbook, but in both of my iMac's and iBooks I have to put it in almost all the way to get it to take the disc. If I try to insert the disc too slow, they tend to not get read and just spin until I eject and re-insert them a little quicker.
    Interestingly my G3 iMac was not this finicky. It would take the disc after about 50% insertion, and as far as I know ws the last slot load Mac that could safely accept mini disc,... I wish they would re-add that capability.

  • How far away from base station can I get with Wi-Fi?

    I want to know how far away from my base station I can get with my iPod touch's Wi-Fi. I can't test it out since it is still shipping, but I would like to know, since I will be travelling a lot with it. I know you can connect it to hotels, restaurants, etc. that have Wi-Fi, but say there's none of them around (since I live in central Nebraska). How far do you really think I can go?

    I hope you only 'travel' around your house. That's about as far as you can go before losing your wifi connection. Alright, might work in the backyard. Seriously, check the range of your router. Mine covers 200 feet, more than enough for my apartment. Certainly not enough to travel and remain connected.

  • How far away from a cabinet is deemed 'too far' fo...

    Hi
    Can anyone answer this question:
    How how far is too far away from a cabinet to get Infinity ?
    Thanks
    Ollie

    Hi again ollie44,
    BT Retail who offers FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) BT Infinity which is their brandname for fibre broadband, to customers who are estimated 15mbps or above for FTTC.
    You can still get FTTC fibre broadband from BT Retail if you are estimated under 15mbps for FTTC though the product is called Faster Unlimited broadband.
    FTTC fibre broadband currently enables a upto 80mbps broadband service, though this will depend on how far away you are from the FTTC cabinet and the quality of your landline.
    FTTC fibre broadband uses VDSL or VDSL2 signals that travel from the FTTC cabinet to your property via the existing copper (sometimes aluminium) line. The further away you are from your FTTC cabinet the slower the fibre FTTC broadband will be.
    However VDSL/2 signals used for FTTC broadband connection degrade far quicker in terms of distance than conventional ADSL broadband signal do.
    Generally speaking if your landline is over 1500 meters in length from the FTTC cabinet to your property then you may not be able to get BT Infinity as you may not be able to achieve over 15mbps from an FTTC service.
    Here is a graph that shows the ADSL(G.DMT,ADSL2 and ADSL2+) and VDSL/2 (FTTC) signal with distance. Please be aware that all ADSL connections are depend on distance from local exchange, where as FTTC (VDSL/2) connections are depend on distance from your FTTC (DSLAM) cabinet. Though all connection types are also depend on line quality.

  • How far does iPhoto take you?

    Hello,
    As I get deeper into digital photography, I am wondering how far serious amateurs go with iPhoto. Is there some point where you find that you wish the software could do more than what iPhoto does and then, do you move on? iPhoto is outstanding, and Photoshop is very expensive. And yet, I begin to think that blowing $400 on another lens might be spent better on software.
    So how does it work for you?

    Ratty:
    PSE has about 80% of Photoshops editing capability at
    about 25% of the price. It is far more versitile to
    iPhoto in editing power, allowing the user to create
    layers, etc.. It does have a much stepper learning
    curve however, but you can do so much more with it,
    for example. You can add text to
    images as well. There is one caveat to using PSE
    thru iPhoto and that is if you create an edit that
    requires a layered file and, thus, a change of
    extension, you must save it to the desktop and then
    import as a new file. Future edits on that file can
    proceed as usual.
    The Effects pallet in iPhoto does make it easy to
    make those types of changes and the Effects pallet is
    much more extensive than before. I think there's a
    demo of PSE available that you can try and and use to
    compare edits with those in iPhoto.
    Toad,
    At first, I thought the sample photos you linked to were different photos. I thought, whats the point of using two different photos to show off the software. Only looking more carefully did I realize that each one was the same photo twice! Very good example of Photoshop Elements! Thanks very much. Seems like a good buy at the price.

  • I am 19 days from my contract needing to be renewed and I broke my screen.    How far in advance can you renew before the actual renew day?

    I am 19 days from my contract needing to be renewed and I broke my screen.    How far in advance can you renew before the actual renew day?

    Basically it is on the day your contract ends. However some Verizon wireless corporate store managers can over ride that and update possibly a week early. But its iffy.
    Now Verizon will let you upgrade to the Edge program but you have a broken device and they will prey on you since you are desperate for a device. Edge plan is paying full price over 20 months and paying taxes on it up front, you then after paying 60% of the device off can edge up to another device. Now if you pay 60% off at anytime after 30 days you can continue to trade them in for new as much as you want.
    Or you can wait it out get a new free device under contract or reduced cost device again under a 2 year contract.
    The edge plan is no contract.
    Good Luck
