How fast, and aproblematic  is the Quad core compared to duals/DP's????

hi
should have one this saturday, with 4 GBS RAM
yet
many different reviews are not all on the same page as to how fast this baby is.
1-is is worth the expense in terms of speed?
2-are there major problems with it that you think need fixing?
3-how does it compare to the DP 2.5 or 2.7 GHZ G5's
any other commendations, hints or negative attributes greatly appreciated
thanks

One thing I can say is that if you already purchased one .. don't worry about it. Any worries you may have had .. I am sure you reasearched it deeply befor plunking 4 Grand+ on a machine.
In summary, any single threaded app .. the 2.7Ghz will beat the Quad. Any multi-threaded app, the Quad will beat any dual G5.

  • How fast and accuracy of the FPGA's clock reference

I may need to make a application as below, but the requested accuracy is around 10ns. Can FPGA help on it? I am new newphie on FPGA.
    - Triggered by an external pulse and start a accurate number counter for a high frequency clock signal(Maybe 100MHz)
    - Triggered by another external channel to stop the counter and lock the result.
    - From the lock result, calculate the time duration from the 1st to 2nd trigger.
    Thanks,

    Hey Christian,
I wonder about the accuracy you have stated for the FPGA Clock. In reference to what time the accuracy can be given as 250 ps? When dealing with the accuracy of my counters, I always assumed that the accuracy is the same as the real time clock (200ppm / 35ppm). If the accuracy is 250ps per cycle, it would be equal to an error of 1 %... or 250 ppb in one second. Both does not occur realistic to me.
can you please speciify that information?
    Thank you, Christian

  • PCIE, PCI, and the quad-core

I have recenty bought the new Quad-Core, a machine that I am very happy with. However, there is one aspect about it that I am not completely clear about. I understand that the PCIe and PCI cards are not interchangeable. Does the quad-core not have a standard PCI slot? In other words, for any video capture cards or other upgrades, I can only use PCIe, correct?

Well, I'm glad it is cutting edge, but the costs definitely hurt. I'm looking at $589 for a video capture card and monitoring system. PCI is as little as $300. Oh well!
Thanks for your input, I appreciate it!

  • Is there anyway to add a 3rd display to the quad core iMac 27?

Is there anyway to add a 3rd display to the quad core iMac 27? I know a 2nd can be added using the mini port.. but curious to see if there is a solution to add a 3rd if desired.
    Thanks!

As Sherman says, the only way to add a 3rd display to an iMac or MacBook is to use a USB to DVI adapter. I've been using the Gefen adapter for a year or so now with my MacBook Pro and it works great:
    http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=4517
But USB does not have a lot of bandwidth, so you can't use it for video, games and other similar stuff. Works great for Mail, web browsing, iWork, etc.

  • Difference between 3,1 and 3,4 GHz Quad-Core  i7

    Hi
Does anybody know if there is a difference between iMAC 3,1 and 3,4 GHz Quad-Core  i7 regarding the sound level of the computer/the fan?
    Thanks R

When I listened to the stock 27" 2011 iMac at an Apple Store, it was dead quiet -- at least so far as I could tell in that environment, which is not exactly the quietest.
I now own a BTO 27" with the 3.4 GHz i7 -- along with both the Apple SSD and a 2 TB internal HD, 16 GB RAM, and the 2GB graphics controller.
With this configuration, in a totally quiet home office, if I listed I can often hear a low-level "whoosh" from the fans. Most of the time, thought, I'm not even aware of that fan sound.
I do sometimes hear the internal HD.
All the iMac's own sounds are insignificant when compared to the spin noise of an external LaCie HD.

  • Picking Up the Quad Core 27 inch iMac in my local Apple Store

    Hey All!
I'm picking up a new iMac this friday at my local Apple Retail Store. I am going for the Quad Core model, now can I pick this up in the store or can I only order it on The Apple Online Store. If in retail store... Can I get i5 or i7 in store or just i5
    - Thanks!

That is correct . . . I bought my i5 at the local Apple Store but had to order my i7 from the on line Apple Store, however, yesterday I noticed that MacMall had i7s available for next day shipment.

  • Quad core i7 vs. dual core i7 if limited to 2 cores

this is  kind of a limited-audience question.  I work with StataMP software, which purposely limits to 2 the number of cores that a machine can use.  This is very computationally intensive statistical software.  I am looking to upgrade, and cannot find info on whether a top of the line i7 sandy bridge dual core machine would perform better or worse than a top of the line quad core machine that is limited by software to 2 cores.
    Any ideas???
    thanks!

If you don't run anything else when you run the program (just let the computer sit and run calculations) then the dual core would be the most cost effective for performance. The nice thing about having a quad core machine is that your program would be able to take full advantadge of two cores leaving the other cores free to handle any other processing the computer needs to do (operating system, other programs running at the same time). If you plan on using this program mostly when you have access to power then the quad core i7 2820QM actually can achive the same turboboost speed as the dual core (3.4ghz, the 2920XM can achive 3.5ghz) making it the faster option. One more thing to consider is how long you plan on having this laptop and if the program will eventually end up supporting a quad core system within the time you plan on having this laptop. Is this an older version of the program becuase according to this page http://www.stata.com/statamp/ it supports quad cores.

  • How much faster are the Quad-Core Macpros?

Does anyone have any idea how much quicker a Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon will encode video in FCP, Compressor, and DVD SP, vs. a Two 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon?
    Thanks.

in some areas motion in particular or exporting mpeg2 from fcp timeline, is slower on this 8 core than on the older dual2gig PPC. this machine has the Nvidea quadro FX4500 which one would hope is faster using motion but doesn't seem to be. that being said compressor rocks using temp Qmaster 4 instance like making 2 pass mpeg2 from a movie file, 90 min movie compressed in 40 min. photoshop and after effects rocks due to multiprocessor use and rendered timeline stuff though not always clean is much faster. having to render more than once and having to watch top to bottom from a QT export out of FCP ***** somedays. Over all it's worth it in my busy every day world

  • Is the mac mini server the same hardware as the other mac minis (except for the quad core i7 and dual hard drives) with different software or is it configured differently?

I have a mac mini with an i7 dual core processor. It is perceptably slower than my macbook pro with a quad core i7. Does the mac mini server have the same hardware configuation as the regular mac mini with server software or is the hardware different (aside from the i7 quad core and dual hard drives)? I want a mini with a quad core i7...

Your assumption is correct.  The server does however only
have the Intel HD3000 graphics like the base model with
no option, at this time, for the discrete graphics chip.  So,
depending on what you are using it for, that could be a deal
breaker.  Remember that your MBP does have a discrete
    graphics chip.
I have a 2011 Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt display
that gets used as an engineering workstation and general
personal use (some photo editing, LP restoraton, general
internet browsing).  You simply just not enable any of the
server services.  I find the combination to work quite well
for my purposes.  I also have a 13" 2.7 GHz i7 Macbook Pro
which is pretty much strictly for work.  As far as CPU
power it is pretty much equivelent to your Mini.  For the most
part I find the Mini does outperfom my MBP.  I heavily use
Parallels and Windows7 virtual machines, so the more cores
    the better.
So, If you do a lot of CPU intensive stuff that is multithreaded,
the Server may help.  If it is graphics intensive and your software
heavily leaverages the GPU, you may actually take a hit on
    performance.

Lower Brightness and turn wifi off when not in use, and close out apps that aren't in use and running in the background by hitting Home twice and then holding down the running application until it wiggles in the bottom toolbar that will pop up, then hit the x at the left of the application to close it out

  • 13" or 15" is the quad core i7 and additional graphics worth the added money

I am looking to replace my 2009 13.3 macbook pro that I've upgraded with a new retina model. Regardless of which model I get it will have the 1 TB storage and 16GB Ram so really my only debate if I want to pay for the additional screen size, secondary graphics processor, and quad core cpu. I use the system for personal use, web browsing, email, itunes, and I play world of warcraft. However I also use this system for business and run parallels with a widows 7 installation running autocad (2D only), ePlan, excel, Rockwell Automation RSLogix suite and RSNetworx, as well as Siemans WinCC HMI software that utilizes a SQL Database. It is not uncommon for me to have all of the windows side apps running at once with multiple windows of each open.
I know the quad processor and the additional graphics card are better than what is available on the 13" retina but I'm not sure if I will see the difference with my usage. Should I go all the way and get the 15" with the i7 2.6GHz Quad core or settle for the 13" with the i7 2.8GHz Dual core?

    Hi eric,
In addition to the factors you mention (and yes, I think the dedicated GPU is significant), here are the GeekBench (the standard for measuring computer speed) scores for your two machines:
    13" 7899
    15" 13287
Thats a pretty big jump in performance, and yes you will notice it with most of the apps you mention, some more than others.

  • Does Firefox 13 run in a multi-threaded mode and can it utilize quad-core processors?

When purchasing a new PC, one chooses between dual-core vs. quad-core processors and some people claim that Firefox run in a mulch-threaded mode and treats each tab as a separate process and that it can fully utilize the advantage of a quad-core processor. Is that true?

Firefox doesn't treat each tab as a separate process. While this may be a feature sometime in the future, I don't know of any plans to introduce it anytime soon. Obviously, buying a quad core processor is going to be significantly faster than a dual-core, and your browser is usually less resource intensive than many other programs. I wouldn't use it as your purchasing decision. Firefox will run equally well on a dual-core or a quad-core, but windows and other programs will run better with 4 cores.
