How fast is fast enough for VOIP?

Before I try too many tweaks I thought I'd ask that question...
I've run speed test multiple times:
Download varies a lot. Normally it's in the low 700s but I've seen them at 600 and as slow as 335
Upload stays pretty steady at about 327-345.
Latency is 311-315.
Should I have good phone quality with these numbers?

Looks to me like I'm not going to be able to do VOIP unless I go with a different provider. I think I'll go with DSL. I know it's a bit slower, than cable but I've heard it's more consistent and you don't have the latency issues. What do you think?

Photoshop Elements 3 - how can I make it work fast enough for 4' x 6' art?

I've had Photoshop Elements 3 for about 4 years and it does all I need to do with some art work, except that it slows to an unacceptable crawl when I work in large sizes, such as 300 dpi (or is it ppi?) at 4' by 6'. To increase editing spped for larger file sizes with high resolution , Go to Edit>Preferences>Performance and increase the Cache
Levels value to maximum which is 8 .
Setting a higher cache level improves performance by speeding redraw times.
Refer this page to get some useful tips of how to increase performance of PSE. See if it makes any difference.

Powerbook 1ghz - fast enough for divx?

I have an opprotunity to get a great deal on a titanium 1ghz powerbook, which i would like to use as a portable personal media center... im curious if anybody has experience using one to watch divx .avi files using toast 7's divx codec? Im sure i could use VLC and it would work fine, but if possible i'd like to use quicktime to watch things.
I know that there's a careful balance between the graphics processor and CPU to be successful with playback. I have a dual 500 with a radeon 9000 and it is not fast enough to watch divx files without serious skipping. However that same graphics card in a dual 1.25ghz G4 played them easily. The 1ghz has a 64mb radeon 9000 (presuming mobility version) but Im not sure if a 1ghz processor would be enough to play them successfully.
I would appreciate anybody's opinions on this matter. Thanks for all your help.

Have you been to www.divx.com? Lots of info there and a different app that may work better for your purposes than Toast. Looks like the 1GHz would have plenty of power for it too:

High Definition - is 802.11N Draft standard fast enough for streaming?

My understanding, from what I've read, is that 802.11n draft standard is actually only running at 50% speed of the actual final 802.11n protocol that will be out in a couple of years.
If Itunes starts selling HD content or I import an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc to Itunes, is the 802.11n fast enough to be able to stream this content to Apple tv? Has anyone tried this?

No. No idea where you got that idea. Right now the Wi-Fi alliance is "certifying" 801.11n Draft 2.0 devices. It is called "draft" simply because it won't be formally approved until 2008, given the normal standardization schedules. Between draft and approved final there may be changes, but they are usually minor, so much so that sometimes a firmware update may do the job.

First of all, don't expect iTunes to provide HD-DVD or Blue-Ray format files any times soon (I mean expect years before you see that). These are 1080p formats, which are NOT supported by the Apple TV. Apple TV does support content with a maximum resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, which can be considered "720p" HD content, though not at the full cable frame rate.
Yes, Apple TV can stream this content. I have converted several HD programs captured from ESPN (which broadcasts in 720p), converted them to H.264 at 1280x720x24fps using MPEGStreamClip (http://www.squared5.com/) and stream them to my AppleTV.

G4 Sawtooth fast enough for streaming audio?

I have a G4 Sawtooth (500mhz, 1Gb ram) and like to use it to host and stream audio via a quicktime player. My upload is 386kb per sec. Is this unit fast enough?
probably there are buffers in the quicktime player or other if it's slow?

I can't find any numbers, but I can't imagine that's not fast enough. I didn't stream, but via Airport played several songs stored on another Mac using QT Player.

External hard drive doesn't wake up fast enough for Time Machine

I am having trouble with using SuperDuper and Time Machine doing their jobs with my external firewire drives.
Config: One 750GB drive (one partition called DataDisk) and one 1TB drive (with two partitiions - Clone and TMDisk) connected thru daisychained firewire to the mac mini.
*Backup Strategy*: SuperDuper clones the internal hard drive to the Clone partition once a week. The Time Machine is setup to backup the DataDisk to the TMDisk.
Usage: My Mac mini is essentially a media server with iTunes always running. Per advice on another thread, I have the mini's power saving setup to let the hard drives go to sleep when possible.
Problem: Once the external drives have gone to sleep, and the SuperDuper tries to do the cloning, it fails. Similarly, the TM fails to find the backup drive. However, if I keep the drive active at the time of these backups, both SD and TM work fine.
Is there a way for me to wake up the drives before SD starts its cloning? Note: I am not letting the mini go to sleep as I use Apple TV to play its contents remotely.
Also, is there a way to wake up the drive before TM starts its operation every hour?

Thank you very much for your suggestions.
I will try to test with USB connection. I will try with the 1TB drive first as the 750GB drive needs work. The 750GB drive needs the firewire interface card to be replaced by the USB card whereas the 1TB has both available together.
I am not terribly in favour of keeping everything ON for the following reasons:
1. The mini or the drives make a whirring noise all the time that they are ON. One of the reasons, I retired my windows PC is that it is inside a computer armoire in my bedroom and even then the noise from the SMPS and CPU fans drive me crazy.
2. The TM starts a backup cycle every hour even when there is nothing to backup and this causes clicking noise from the drives. If I could configure TM to run only once a day so that I can get the rollback uption (which SD can't) when I accidentally delete some data file. But, I am told that TM can't be configured thus.
3. Power consumption: I have a power meter that plugs into the AC outlet into which I can connect the devices under measurement. I will find out how much power it really consumes. I had purchased this device to measure the power consumption of the pump/filter in my Koi pond as that runs 24/7 and I don't like drawing too much of electricity as it is a scarce resource today (the electricity cost is also very high in Northern California).
I am just wondering if I should buy one of those RF remotes that you connect to USB port which can operate from upto a distance of 60ft. I could keep this next to my Apple TV remote and use it to wake up the mac mini before using my Apple TV. I only hope that the mac mini wakes up on this type of remote as well.

How to prioritize RTP Packets for VOIP Audio on RV180

Hi There,
I'm a relative newbie to more advanced networking but have managed to get our small office IP PBX running over a SIP Trunk. The only real problem we are having is choppy outgoing audio when there is other heavy outgoing traffic on the network.
My understanding is that I need to set some QoS parameters, which I have played with but it didn't seem to help much. I mostly dealt with allocating bandwidth. I now think I need to somehow prioritize the outgoing RTP packets from our PBX (which runs on a PC on our LAN) to help avoid the choppy audio. My research shows this can maybe be done with something called DSCP 46 and my router does support that -- I'm just a little confused on how to exactly set the configuration.
Our router is a Cisco rv180w. I'm thinking it should be pretty straightforward, but any guidance would be appreciated (and feel free to let me know if I'm barking up the entirely wrong tree, too!)

OK, thank you. So specifically -- if I want to prioritize all of the RTP traffic flowing out through the router, can I do it ALL with just COS and not set any QoS, profile binding etc?
So far I have enabled the COS Queue, left the default settings (where COS Priorities 6 and 7 are set to highest), then on the COS to DSCP page I have entered the value 46 into the Priority 6 and 7 boxes. All the rest I left at 0.
Unfortunately this didn't seem to solve the issue. The way I have been testing is to call our PBX from an outside line, then put myself on hold so I can hear the hold music (effectively an audio stream from the PBX server). Then I listen carefully while I run a bandwidth test from speedtest.net.
During the download test the audio (music on hold) is pretty smooth. But during the upload test (lots of data flowing outbound) the audio gets very choppy. The COS settings I've tried don't seem to improve or even change that
I assume I'm doing something wrong and/or need to involve QoS somehow?

NB550D - How fast is the SDHC slot?

I wanted to add an SDHC card but was unsure how fast the slot is in this notebook. Could it make full use of a 60MB/s card or is the reader going to be the bottleneck?

I never heard that card slot speed is limited. Usually its depending on the SD or SDHC card.
Where did you saw a SDHC card with 60 MB/s? Fastest SDHC card is known to me is SanDisk Extreme 30MB/s and they are really fast. I only use this brand of SDHC cards and never had any problems with performance or something else. They are fast enough for recording FullHD movies for example :)

Windows simulation fast enough on mbp?

i use an old g4 pb, and a windows-laptop.
now i want to get one laptop - running both: mainly mac, sometimes vista.
is the windows (bootcamp, Parallels) with f.e. adobe cs2 fast enough for working? or is it too slow?
i know, this is a difficult question, depends on the subjective feeling of each user. but i like to hear some feedback of users, that usw windows, too, on a mbp.

with bootcamp the mbp would run at the same speed as any comparable intel system
with vmware fusion i find the mbp booots windows 2000 faster than a dell booots windows xp, but i rarely need windows so haven't used it much beyond installing office and testing it worked ok, certainly didn't find any issues with speed
running linux under vmware fusion for a cisco network and video management application, there's absolutely no problems with performance even when the mbp is also streaming video under osx and running other apps, i tried running windows at the same time and it was still fine
the only thing i do that maxes out the mbp is encoding video in premiere pro (cs3 under osx) the fans run non-stop and it gets pretty warm

Apple MacBook Air 2011 - powerful enough for most tasks?

I want to buy the 2011 model of MacBook Air 13” 128GB, but I have some questions for you guys, would appreciate it if you experts have answers:
1) I'm currently on a two year old Acer Aspire 6920G laptop with 17”, Windows 7, Core Duo 2 (T5750 @ 2.0 Ghz) and 3 GB RAM - will my new MacBook Air feel one million times faster to use?
2) Can I later (easily/cheaply) upgrade the MBA's RAM to 8GB?
3) I mostly use web browsers, office software, IM programs, media players etc., but I will also use it a lot for electronic music making (with Ableton Live and virtual instruments/effects) and DJ’ing (with Avid Torq). I almost never do any heavy duty image work, and I rarely code/edit video - will the MBA be fast enough for the things I do most often, or do I have to get a MacBook Pro?
4) How often does the fan start up? And when it's on, how much noise does it really make when it approaches 6500 RPM?
5) I read that with Lion the fan is running more than with previous OS'es - can this really be fixed with booting in 32-bit rather than 64-bit? And what will that entail for the CPU power/battery longevity/software compability?
6) Is the graphics adapter in my current PC (nVidia GeForce 9500M GS) much more powerful than the MBA's Intel HD3000, or is it almost the same now?
7) Is it easy to run Windows XP or 7 in Boot Camp? I have a few Windows programs I'd like to continue using.
8) Should I alternatively use a few more bucks and get a MacBook Pro with SSD-disk? Is that less "locked" and more compatible with what might happen in the future, technology-wise?
9) Is it possible/cheap to switch the English keyboard to a Norwegian one next time I'm visiting Norway?
I have to make a purchase of a new laptop soon, so I'd GREATLY appreciate any answers. Since I have had software- and hardware problems with every PC I've ever owned, I frankly do not trust them anymore. So here we go then - Mac!

1)The i5 Macbook air should be considerably faster than your previous laptop. Mostly because of the SSD and the i5 processor.
2)I'm not sure about the latest macbook airs, but previous models have their RAM modules soldered to the Logic Board, I don't think you can upgrade the RAM at all.
3)The MacBook Air might be fast enough, but Just, I would go with a Macbook Pro, mostly because it's easier to upgrade.
4)It will kick in several times but rarely at full speed, and it's not that loud. Would recommend a macbook pro for cooler running.
5) I didn't notice any difference between Lion and Snow Leopard regarding fan activity. Lion is a 64-bit only system, there is no way to boot in a full 32-bit environment. Compatibility can be an issue with some software, ie. traktor users have been reporting problems with external hardware running Lion, but updates will fix these soon.
6)They are at comparable levels, the Intel HD 3000 might even be better at some point. It's much better than the 9400m that older macbook airs had.
7)Yes, as long as you have the optional super drive to install it.
8)Yes, that would be a better idea.
9)I don't think so, never heard of people swapping keyboards on Macbook Airs or Pro's.
I'd buy a MacBook Pro if you are planning to keep it for long. It's more powerful, more upgradeable and runs cooler and quieter than the air.

How fast is Express/34 on a MacBookPro, good enough for HD capture/edit?

I need some help to try and clear up what I feel is misinformation around the web as to whether a MacBookPro can edit full true, high definition, 1080p video.
First of all, it is not clear at what speed the Express/34 can operate at.
According to the Express standard, the Express interface can connect into one of the following buses on the motherboard:
1. PCI Express: 2.5 Gbit/sec/direction
OR
2. USB 2.0: 480 Mbit/sec
If it is (1) then it is way above your figure, 2.5Gbit/s = 2500Mbit/s which is just over 300M Bytes/s.
Which is more than enough for HD
If Apple have chose 2. Then they are really stupid!
that's pointless when there are existing USB2 480 ports on the laptop.
I thought the whole point of Express was to offer higher bandwidths than USB or Firewire.
They've just brought out a 17" 1920x1200 laptop that is capable of displaying full HD but if they have a slow bus preventing full 1080p capture then that is really infuriating!
Secondly, some people think that Express/54 is faster - it is not - it supports the exact same speed as /34 but it's just bigger physically.

Fourth, how is full true HD 1080p high def video captured into a computer? Is it Firewire 800, for example or a custom interface.

The MacBook Pro (15" and 17") ExpressCard/34 slot supports BOTH a 1-lane PCI Express link (connected directly to the Southbridge) and one USB 2.0 interface (connected to the USB 2.0 controller in the Southbridge).
A 1-lane PCI Express connection can theoretically support 250 MB/s in each direction.
Your ExpressCard/34 will determine which of the MBP's interfaces is used, based on the card's design.
Further to the discussion, internally the MBP has a 1GB/s bidirectional DMI bus connecting the Southbridge with the Northbridge. The Northbridge, in turn, is connected to the processors via an 800MHz 32-bit bidirectional bus.

Fast enough computer for LabView?

Hello, I would like to know if I have a fast enough computer for the
application I'm developing. I have just ordered the PCI/232-16 Serial
Interface card from National Instruments and plan to use it with a
Pentium 150 running Windows NT with 64MB of memory. I'm writing the
LabView program to contain 16 individual while loops for each ports of
the interface card (that's 16 while loops, just to let you know). I'll
be constantly writing and reading from the ports and displaying the data
read by the port. If anyone can comment on what I have so far, or can
say anything about how fast LabView code executes, I'd greatly
appreciate it.

I may be wrong about this, but most NI cards seem to use a single UART and
timeshare it - this could cause you serious problems if you are aniticipating
being able to read and write from all 16 ports simultaneously. I'd check
the hardware specification for that NI card closely before worrying about
the computer being fast enough. I've had to revert to Comtrol RocketPorts
in the past because of this issue.
