  • How fast is your MB Unibody 2.4 fan when watching Hulu?

When ever I watch any flash based video over the web my fan goes 6000+. Is this normal? How fast is your fan?

I sold my 1st gen MacBook and bought a MacBook Pro because of the same problem. I have a 2008 aluminum MBP now with the same graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor) as yours and my fans stay at 2000RPM when watching Hulu.
Your fan may be running high because you only have one fan compared to mine having 2, and the interior of your unit is smaller than mine, thus causing more heat buildup.
FWIW...My 1st gen MacBook Air's fan runs 6000RPM when watching Hulu on it.

Out of curiosity, how fast does your Windows bootup?
I have Windows XP, and the logo screen displays for about 11.06 seconds. How about yours, and what can be done to make Windows work faster?

Also more fast bootup stuff... Search google for XP SP2 Beta... install that > ive found it great so far.. MS has got it so it disables a load of unneeded services so PC will boot / shut down quicker.. Remember it is only a BETA atm.. so use at your own risk.. ive had no probs tho.. pc seems quicker

Thanks Flam3h, it most definitely is the printer spooler.  The problem is that if you set it to manual, your printer will not work.  When you go to print something, Windows tells you that you must first install a printer.  This is the only service I've found where the manual setting will not work.  You either have to set it as automatic or go into services and start it each time you want to print.  I'm just wanting to know if anyone else has this problem and knows of a work around to allow the manual setting to work.
I don't know if I'm ready to try service pack 2 yet.  If I do, I will definitely make a ghost first

  • How fast does your MBP battery die?

    Hi everyone,
I've just received my third Macbook Pro battery. I used it ONCE and now it's down to 98% capacity. What is wrong with those batteries? Are yours degrading as fast?
Detail: I received the brand new battery. Charged it to 100%, left it charged for a few hours, and then drained it until the MBP went to sleep, left it until the LED went out (standard calibration procedure). After subsequent charging the capacity is only 5420 out of 5500 mAh.
Battery one was nearing 70% capacity after 3-4 months and was bulging (swollen battery issue). Battery two had less than 50% capacity left after less than 6 months and would cut power with no prior notice.
    MBP 1,8   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Clearly your first two batteries were bad. Don't freak out just yet, though. That magic number - 5500 mAh - is the nominal capacity of a new battery for a 15" MBP. Did you actually check the full charge capacity before you calibrated it? Because nominal means "stated or expressed but not necessarily corresponding exactly to the real value" (see definition #3 in the dictionary widget). So, it's possible that you actually started with a 5400 mAh battery which imporved with calibration, or a 5600 mAh battery that dropped more than 2%, etc. Point is, there have been some bad batteries (thank you, Sony!) and you were unlucky to get two in a row, but don't assume a 2% drop means you got a 3rd lemon.
I've got just over 60 cycles, and my battery 'health' fluctuates between 90% and 97% - and yes, I mean fluctuates- as in falls and rises - from charge to charge. Sometimes it will drop 3% in one charge cycle, then rise 5% the next, etc...
So, relax and just keep an occasional eye on it.

  • How fast does your Nano FULLY charge via computer?

The specs say about 3 hours, but my Nano says it's done in 2. Is this normal or did I somehow screw up the calibration on my battery? Anyone have insight? Thanks!

    Hey iPodDiva,
The iPod will fast charge to 80% over the first 2 hours and then trickle charge to 100% over the last 2 hours.
These web pages will provide more detailed information.

  • How fast export your A3

I export full quality jpeg files from a 500D RAW file and i think A3 is really slow. I had export 18JPEGs in 9min. so 30sec for 1.
Can anybody with an 500D test i this is a normal speed for A3.
    LR2.6 was definitely faster...

I am running A3 on a iMac 3.06 GHz with 4GB memory. Library is about 200GB. Selecting 60 canon 5D RAW files and exporting to jpg original size takes less than 60 sec
This is a library that was a A2 library before I upgrade.

  • How fast do your rechargeable batteries wear out?

i have a realtively new imac and i have an apple battery charger to recharge the batteries. i find when i change the batterries in the mouse they only last for about a week when the battery level gets down into the 20s % and i have to change the batteries. i use the computer 8 hours a day at least. is this normal for the batteries to wear out so fast? are they defective? i did an experiment and used regualr batteries and they lasted longer.

That could be about right. I don't use my iMac nearly that much, and when I do it is mostly the mouse. I have to change the mouse batteries 3-4 times as often. Maybe once a month using it a few hours at a time, with some days not at all (have a MBP too). As to the difference between regular alkalines (which came with the KB and mouse) and the Apple recharge ones I bought later, I agree the Apple ones go faster.

  • How to install windows on the SSD (Y580)

I have bought an Y580 recently wIth a 64GB SSD and 1TB HDD. I asked the salesperson upfront if the OS would be on the SSD. He said yes. Turns out that it is not. When i returned to them they told me it's a hybrid drive solution. And they have no idea how to install Windows on the SSD.
I did some research and found out that Lenovo uses *Rapiddrive* to speed up programs. Hence why i can't see the SSD in WIndows as it is merged with the 1TB HDD.  In Disk management 2 disks show , 0 and 1 , but Windows asks to give disk 1 a MBR or GPT (this is apparantly due to the rapiddrive methode).
    My questions:
    * Is it possible to install Windows on the SSD and if so how can that be done without loosing the backup on the hidden partition of the 1TB disk? (so that OKR still works)
    * What are the benefits of Rapiddrive over using the SSD as bootdisk?

Since it is a hybrid drive, it works a little bit differently; Lenovo's "Rapiddrive" is also different from other hybrids, and in the sake of making it "user friendly" and seen as a single disc they have probably nerfed some configurability for the intermediate/advanced users. However, Windows should already be installed on the SSD portion of the drive, this should be done automatically according to this press release:
    http://shop.lenovo.com/us/sitelets/ee/consumer-news
"In the factory we will preload not just Windows 7 on the SSD, but also our Lenovo applications like OneKey™ Theater or OneKey™ Rescue System. The applications, operating system, drivers and other files are all fully-optimized for Enhanced Experience to make them load much faster. This, combined with their installation on the SSD will make the boot time to Windows desktop even faster. Some portion of the SSD will also be reserved as the Windows Paging File — this is used by Windows as 'virtual memory' additional to the normal RAM installed inside the computer. With the SSD acting as the Paging File, general Windows 7 performance will also benefit, especially when multitasking several applications.
The remaining space, which will typically be around 15GB on a 32GB SSD, will be empty, ready for the user to install their favorite applications and files."
I have some of the fastest SSD's around installed on my desktops (SATA III), and while they are blazing fast, keep in mind the whole boot sequence still isn't going to be instantaneous even with an SSD (the biggest differennce you will notice is by the time Windows is loaded, it's fully loaded to the RAM, whereas a normal HDD you may see the desktop but your PC will still be cranking away with startup processes). If your startup is taking 30 seconds or less, maybe even a little longer, it's probably accessing the SSD just fine; if it's taking closer to 60 seconds, then yeah it may need to be reinstalled/reconfigured.
As for reinstalling, sorry I won't really be able to help, hopefully someone else can come along; I personally have never used OKR anyways, and aside from doing a ghost backup I wouldn't say for sure that OKR would be salvageable with a fresh install. And because the Rapiddrive is its own technology, half SATA half PCI-E, I also couldn't tell you if it's even possible to fully seperate the two and keep them as distinct drives.

  • Problems with return of defective m4 128 GB SSD

Hi altogether, I am sorry to have "abuse" this forum for this, but the RMA request page does not work properly for more than two weeks now. I am always receiving a java.lang.NullPointerException error message after entering the serial number of my defective SSD - no matter which browser I use to access it.I also contacted the official Crucial support ([email protected]) but they did stop responding after announcing to send me some troubeshooting steps on 07/16.Hence, I just don't know where else to ask for further help... Can anybody please simply try to open a RMA request for a SSD (preferably a m4 128 GB) on Crucial's EU website and confirm that nasty error message I am always receiving after having entered the serial number of the drive? The problem is that my about two years old m4 128 GB SSD did stop working after I moved it from my former laptop (Sony Vaio) - where it worked like a charm - to an external USB 3.0 enclosure (model RaidSonic ICY BOX IB-250StU3-BH). When I connected the external enclosure to my PC the drive appeared in Windows Explorer (Windows 8.1 Pro) for a short period of time (1-2 seconds) and then disappeared without any warning / notice.
Disconnecting and reconnecting the enclosure did not solve the problem (there is still no response from the SSD).Installing a conventional hard disk as well as another SSD in the same enclosure for test purposes showed that it still works fine.
I also installed the m4 SSD in another enclosure as well as connected it directly via SATA to the mainboard of my PC without success.
Hence, I believe the drive is really defective and also cannot be "revived" by simple software troubleshooting.
Has anybody else also experienced similar issues and could there indeed be a way to solve it without a replacement (e.g. by a "blind flash" of the firmware)? And how can I claim a RMA for my drive as it is still under the 3-year warranty if the corresponding page does not work and the official support stopped answering?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Best regards,
    FNW

Hi targetbsp, thank you very much for your kind help !And sorry for my pretty belated reply... Although it sounded hard to believe at first, the "revival" instructions did indeed work perfectly for my "broken" SSD! I just left it connected to only power via an external SATA to USB adpator (which has an extra power supply) for 2x 20 minutes as described and it came back to life (and all my data were still present as nothing had even happened)! Unfortunately, it turned out that the external USB 3.0 enclosure seems not to be able to provide enough "startup" current to this SSD as it "broke" again after I re-installed it there and hooked it up to my PC.After performing the "revival" routine again (which worked perfectly), I guess I will use it in another laptop where it will get enough power from the internal SATA port (as this one is not limited to 750mA like USB 3.0 is)... But thanks a lot for saving me the hassle of an unnecessary return!Maybe I should have done some more research, but I simply didn't see any chance to get such a drive to work again...

  • 4 GB RAM / 128 GB SSD or 8GB RAM / 256 GB SSD ?

I'm deciding to buy a macbook for the first time and I'm having a hard time deciding which would suit me the best. I've narrowed it down to 13.3 inch, 4GB RAM and 128 GB SSD with retina or 8 GB RAM, 256 SSD and retina. I plan to use it for music, photos, video editing and typical school work. I'm mostly worried that the 4 GB RAM  / 128 GB SSD isn't enough space for everything. Also taking in consideration of the price, theres about a $100 difference between the two but would the 8GB be worth the extra money?

Take note, the retina resolution is pretty high on a small screen. (take care of your eyes)
Get the extra RAM, hands down.
I use a 128gb disk, at any given time it's only half-full, but I offload alot of the data to external disks for video/photo work and processing.
So the size is your choice, just depends on how often you want to move data to the external.

  • How fast do "old" MacBook Pros go out of stock?

How fast do MacBooks and MacBook Pros go out of stock in stores after the latest update announcements each year?
If the rumors that Apple will discontinue installing internal optical drives in their MacBook Pros, then I would want to buy the "older" model before it goes out of stock because I use the opticle drives A LOT for burning and reading physical media, and also like to have hard copy backups of expensive software so that it won't disppear like it would if the hard drive on a backup disk failed.
I think it would be unlikely they would completly discontinue including optical drives, but very plausible that they could discontinue including them in the 13-inch models of the MacBook Pro to save battery life. However, I don't want to have to pay an extra $500-$700 just to get the 15-inch model either.

Always buy the latest model when upgrading. Just get an external DVD drive.
