How full should I allow network storage to get?

I see a lot of averages that state you shouldn't fill up your RAID (XSAN Volume, X-RAID, Whatever you use in Final Cut Server to Store and/or edit media off of for all the client computers) beyond 80%.
I understand that there is both a huge performance hit and possible data corruption/drive issues when you fill up your RAID volume. Each on of our RAIDs has a 9.55 TB capacity. I was hoping to use 8 TB--around 83%.
Does that sound right? Any recommendations?
Shawn Larkin

We are running 2 x Cal Digit HD Pros. Each has 8 x 1.5 TB drives in it that when formatted RAID 5 / HFS gives us a total of 9.55 TB useable space on each RAID.
The Media and Library Devices on these volumes are set to "Edit In Place" status.
Also, I have never turned on journaling for media/editing volumes. Do you have any advice for this? I've read a lot about it and it seems like the overhead/possible performance loss does not warrant using it for these RAID volumes. But I have found not definitive answer.
Finally, I am still testing "the best way" to import our media catalogue and raw media into Final Cut Server. I was dead on when I said that FCS makes unnecessary duplicate proxies depending on how you import the media. This is a big deal for those of us that like to run a clean, clutter free workflow.
I do appreciate your time,
Shawn Larkin

  • How big should I allow my SP's to get?

    Hi,
I've got a stored procedure which returns entries for a calendar from all over my database by looking at lots of different tables that have date fields.
The SP is basically a union of about 10 different selects from various places but I am also doing things like swapping that dates if the end date is before the start.
My question is how large should I allow my SP to get before I start shifting some of the logic back to the C# code?
    Cheers,
    Paul.

There is no direct answer to that question, but maybe: it is not the right question to ask.
As long as you are reading working with data from the tables you should probably be in SQL. Particularly if you do this in a set-based fashion. That is, if you need to swap start/end dates on 10000 rows, you can do this in a single statement in T-SQL. Not
    in C#.
One situation where you should consider C# is when you want to complex logic on a scalar value, for instance regular-expression matching. Or administrative operations like working the surrounding file system. It may also be an option for data operations
where there is no good set-based solution in T-SQL.
But the sheer size has little do to with it.

  • HT201318 How do I downgrade my iCloud storage and get a refund within the 15 days?

    Help!
How do I downgrade my iCloud storage and get a refund within the 15 days?
I recently up-graded from 10 to 20GB in the middle of my storage plan, but I've changed my mind. How can I get a refund and revert my account back to its previous settings?

If in the US, follow the link below (you must request a refund within 15 days) -
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16968425#16968425
it gives the USA phone number - if you don't live there you will have to find an equivalent number from the 'Contact Us' link at bottom right of this page.

If water drained out of your phone when you pulled it out of the toilet it is most likelyh dead.  Stop trying to turn it on or plugging it in.  You really need to put it in a bag of rice for 3-4 days and just leave it alone.  It will take that long to get it totally dry to see if it is going to come back to life.
Good luck, but since you tried to turn it on, and plugged it in while it was probably still wet inside I would not count on it surviving.

  • How old should a kid be before he gets an ipod

I love my ipods and my iphone. My stepson is 8 and is wanting an ipod for Christmas. He doesn't live with us, and I am not sure if he is old enough for an ipod. When he comes to see us on the weekends, I always burn him new CD's and his love for music is growing. I want to get him an ipod, so I can add new things on the weekend. I wish Apple made a version for kids. Any thoughts on this??

My 7 year old son wants an iPod too. My 5 year old hasn't expressed any such interest. I can't believe that my 7 year old is really going to use the thing much seeing how he hasn't expressed a lot of interest in music (he likes music, of course, but it's not something he's clamoring for.) I think he wants one because his similar age cousins got them for their birthdays and because it's a gadget and he's come to love gadgets because, well, I love them. Fortunately what his cousins have gotten are iPod shuffles and so that's what he wants. I really can't see getting him an iPod nano or higher. Actually he'd probably use the nano more, but just because it has games on it. Given that, I'd rather get him a shuffle and a game for his Nintendo DS. Perhaps having a shuffle will get him more interested in music. So, I think it's at least harmless enough, and the shuffle, especially a refurb shuffle, isn't a lot of money.
However, if your child does have a lot of interest in music, then I think it could be a good idea, and in that case a nano could be a good choice. One nice thing about the iPods is that you can set a volume limit - the one thing I'd worry about is them playing the music too loud, so the volume limit (which can be password blocked), is a good thing. I'm pretty sure the iPod shuffle has a volume limit option too, but I don't actually know how that works. Do you set it in iTunes? On the iPod nano and higher you set it on the iPod.

  • Mac Happy Network Storage

I have been looking for some network storage for my Mac only home network with two principal characteristics.
1 - Ethernet Interface (I'd like Gigabit if possible)
2 - Mac OS disk format
Everything I've found is NTFS or FAT32 which is a pain to use with Mac/Unix filename and extensions. Does any one know of a solution to my problem?

this may or may not get you where you want... but, i am very happy w/ this option @ work. it's cheap, effective, multi-user friendly and very configurable. however, it only supports 10/100 ethernet and not gigabit.
so, that being said, you may want to look into using the linksys NSLU2. it allows network storage via connected USB2 hds ( x2). the NSLU2 runs linux and you can update the firmware w/ a more user-friendly/configurable version had here:
    http://www.nslu2-linux.org/
The nslu2 does not use HFS+, but sticks to ext3, however.
The Unslung firmware allows you ssh access, busybox, package management via ipkg, etc. the install directions are quite straightforward and there exists a LOT of online doc. with the nslu2, a 250 gb drive, and USB enclosure from an online vendor, the whole shebang can be put together for ~ US $240.00
you can setup NFS on the NSLU2 and automount volumes for use w/ psync, rsync, etc, etc. works very nicely, it's rather fast and offers a number of other pre-compiled packages for use (httpd, ftp, mysql, etc.).
another option to consider is purchasing an older G4 desktop (MDD or something similar) on amazon and placing that on your network. or you could roll your own solution running freebsd or linux for relatively cheap (not as cheap as the NSLU2, however) if you buy a mobo, a box, ram, power supply, etc.
    cheers,

  • Core Data: "Allows external storage" for Transformable type?

When I create a Core Data attribute, and set its type to "Transformable", the "Allows external storage" option is unavailable. I only see it available for Binary type.
How can I use "Allows external storage" with Transformable type?

I wanted to post an update and let everyone know what I decided on and how well it works.
I went with the following setup.
    eSATA Express Card
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839200006
    eSATA enclousure
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817173043
    eSATA drive
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218
All of this cost me a total of $159.57 for about 600gigs of high performance storage after being formated! I did some benchmarks and the drive is performing faster than my internal 7200rpm drive. It is not much faster but it is faster.
So I would have to say that if you really want some fast performing drives for just about anything eSATA is probably the way to go.
    About the items,
The eSATA card looked used when i got it. The seal was broken and the item was dirty and had finger prints on it. It was however very easy to install. I just downloaded the newest drivers from rosewill.com plugged it in and it worked.
The hard disk enclosure seems well made and was a breeze to setup and install. It also does usb 2.0 if you need it. It has as a big cooling fan and includes a usb and sata cable as well as a eSATA bracket for your desktop pc.
All in all a great buy. So thank you again for all the info

  • How do i use my time capsule as a network storage

I have a macbook pro a windows pc and two windows laptops plus an ipad and three other tablets and I want to be able to use my TC as a network storage so that I can save most of my files on it and save disk space on each of my devices plus also make all of my files available via the TC to all of my devices.

Yes, you can do it.. the question is should you do it.. My answer to that is NO.. the TC is not a NAS. It is a basic router with a hard disk in it for wireless Time Machine backups. (If you have a desktop it is faster using a USB plugged in. cheaper and far more reliable).
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
    8. In the case of Windows it will have the standard FAT32 4GB file size issue. Even though the disk is not formatted FAT32, it is shared to the Windows computer as if it is.

HOW CAN I SET TIHE NETWORK TIME in the apple tv BECAUSE IT DOESNT ALLOW ME TO SING IN

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Time and date should be set automatically by the network time server. There has been a number of posts reporting this problem. Solutions have involved:
Restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for a few moments.
    Restoring the Apple TV.
Opening port 123 on the router.
Ensuring the DNS address on both the router and the Apple TV are those provided by your ISP.

  • How long should your iPad stay at a full charge

How long should my ipad2 stay full charge?

The amount of time left on the battery depends on what you are doing with the iPad. Apple provides estimates based on certain assumptions:
    Battery Life6
Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music
Up to 9 hours of surfing the web using cellular data network
Charging via power adapter or USB to computer system
Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music
Up to 9 hours of surfing the web using cellular data network
Charging via power adapter or USB to computer system
Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music
Up to 9 hours of surfing the web using cellular data network
Charging via power adapter or USB to computer system
It's impossible to make a judgment on your situation because there are too many variables involved. If you believe you are not getting the battery life you should, then take it back to see about a replacement.

  • How to setup a usb printer on the usb port of a network storage drive

I have searched the forums and dont see any real info on this..
I have  a usb based officejet 7590 , winxp, and a iomega home media network storage drive
the printer works fine when I install it on the local usb port of the laptop
    BUT
its not clear how to connect it ot the usb port of the network drive.
DO I have to resinstall it as a network printer?
DO I have to resinstall device drivers if I already installed it as a usb printer for the local port?
Can I use the scan/fax functions if I do it right?
    thx!

OK, I will use it as a bookstand...
Since I obviously don't know enough about networks I will stay away from 'professional' products like the Cisco products.
The user interface and the documentation of these products are clearly made by nerds for nerds...
    Thanks for your help.

  • TS4009 How do I get a full uk refund for additional storage bought but realized not needed?

How do I get a full uk refund for additional storage bought but realized not needed?
All I wanted to do was upgrade my ipad 2 to ios 6 but in my settings it was greyed out and it told me I did not have enough storage to upgrade so I bought additional icloud storage and realised that this made no difference whatsoever
Now I was a refund but typical apple, one click to buy but a million and a phone call to get back
I just want this iPad upgraded and my refund for storage that aint storage!?? and someone to explain to me in LAYMAN's terms what the difference is between iPad storage and iCloud and what is the point if you cannot upgrade even though you bought more storage!?
    Thank you

iCloud: Photo Stream troubleshooting - Support - Apple
Use instructions to downgrade your storage.
difference in laymans terms is simple. You ipad has local storage. Icloud is storage on apple server, that people by to create backup. Local storage for ipad can not be expanded. New ipad with bigger storage can be purchased and Apple makes them is up to 128 gigs size.

  • How do I allow network volumes with the latest iMovie 10.0?

How do I allow network volumes with the latest iMovie 10.0? The old "defaults write -app iMovie allowNV -bool true" doesn't work anymore.

So, apparently, while iMovie is open, I have to EJECT the Net Drive.  When I remount it, iMovie immediately picks it up.
That said... the update leaves much to be desired.  Many of the Projects have unlinked video (even though the same update using a Firewire HD shows the video linked).

With the Nanos, you should have no problem lending them loaded with audiobooks from Librivox, etc.
As for the iPod Touches, I'm not sure the question is whether you should allow patrons to set up the device for personal accounts, but whether you can prevent them from doing so. Prepare to to a factory restore every time one is returned.
