How good are either the 13" MBP 2010 or 15" MBP 2010 for gaming?

I am thinking of getting a macbook pro at some point because I want an OSX capable machine and long battery life.
However, I like to play PC games as well and I was wondering how well do they perform in this area, either under OSX or Windows 7.
Examples of games I play:
Source (e.g. HL2, Portal, L4D)
Crysis
Stalker
UT3
Obviously most of these only run under W7 (which I believe lacks GPU switching and therefore shorter battery) but for most the time I'll be under OS X but still need to know performance.
I am currently wondering whether the performance increase in the base 15" is worth it compared to the 13" so I am asking now considering the larger size and £500 difference.
For comparison, my current HP W7 laptop has a core 2 Duo T8100 2.1GHz, 4GB RAM and a nvidia 8400M GS.
thanks in advance

Hum, lets say it is very basic and the diode on it isn't very good (at least that is how my Lenovo mouse feels), you have to use a mouse pad and don't expect to play any shoot em up on it. I find the Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse V2.0 far better for that price, it is far more sensitive, you can use it on most surfaces and has better quality feel to it. However, the Lenovo laser mouse is a pretty good buy if you can afford it.

  • How good are these tools?

I got to know about these tools which help the organizations to select the right ERP software for their operations and normally it directs towards SAP if it is a manufacturing organization and towards Oracle if it is a telecom organization. This leads me to think [how good are these tools to select the right ERP software|http://www.infoverto.com/p/erp-software-tools.html]? Any thoughts, if somebody used them?

  • How good are Stereo2 vs. E-D, X3D, etc. And other questions too =D.

I'm curious, and I hope someone can answer this, how good are the Stereo2 glasses in comparison with E-D and X3D.
Also, will they work with any MSI card?  I currently have a Gf4 Ti4200 with TV-Out, will that work?
Finally, what is that card they come packaged with?  IS that just a cheapo video card or do you need it to use the glasses?
    Thanks in advance!  :D
EDIT (and to bump it too ):  Do these glasses support interlaced and page-flipped or what?  Sorry, but I'd realy appreciate it if someone could answer because these glasses would be a great alternative to paying $100 for some X3D or E-D.

  • How playlists are curating the future of music

Here's an interesting read for all you playlist makers out there . Looks like what you are doing is starting to make a big impact on the music industry.
    http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/9686-up-next-how-playlists-are-curating-the-future-of-music/

Massive shout out to   and  for being featured in the article:
"There’s Jonathan Good, a 37-year-old business manager near Glasgow who has about 2,000 followers on Spotify and says his “obsession” started after a positive review for one of his playlists on another site. One of his most successful playlists, “If Darth Was a DJ”, is based on what he imagined theStar Wars villain would play behind the decks. “I’ve always enjoyed sharing my musical discoveries, and Spotify gives me the ability to do that on a larger scale,” Good tells me in an email. “Playlists are now the way we listen to music, and I can see a time coming when the playlist creator becomes just as important an element in the process as the artists being featured.”
Then there’s Soundofus, aka Gerard, a retired school director from the suburbs of Paris with almost 20,000 Spotify followers who asks me not to publish his age or full name (but says he has seen the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and the Who all perform live). He runs a music review website and got a big break when a playlist he researched and compiled with songs from the 2012 Summer Olympics in London ended up going viral.
Diestro, aka Cristian Garcia, an unemployed 25-year-old from southern Spain with 18,000 followers, says he made his first playlist to organize music that he likes, such as Dire Straits and Queen, but since then has made more than 200 more across different genres and styles. He tells me in an email that while Apple and others hire paid playlist makers, it’s amateurs like him that are often more effective. He hopes more services will take Spotify’s lead in empowering its users and, at the same time, hopes to one day work in a job “related with music, something that I enjoy every minute of my life.”

  • How good are free antivirus software?

I actually don't run antivirus on my personal machine because it slows it down (though I do run a second opinion scan every now and then). But I agree with NattNatt education is the frontline. You can add the best antivirus protection, block local admin rights and add perimeter security devices but if the user clicks on a link or an attachment they can still infect the machine. Add good security solutions but educate your users on what to look out for and when to ask you for a second opinion.

I know that when it comes to antivirus software licensed is the way to go but I might get a pretty big tender soon. 30 laptops that needs antivirus software. This will come out quite expensive for the school especially if they need to renew every year. The only other option is the free option like avast, avg free, commodo, ms security essentials etc. How good are these free anti virus software and do they really do a good job at protecting a PC? Or will it be better for the school to buy licensed AVs? I am quite a fan of Kaspersky and AVG

What I really want is that my customers to only use one app that has all my services. It is an interactive app so I would not like them to go surfing elsewhere while they are in my store.

  • How can I keep the edited video which in project into Libray for re-edit ?

How can I keep the edited video which in project into Libray for re-edit later ??
    As i used i movie 06 before....
after i imported the videos in to the library, then i can drag the videos to the timeline(now is project)
    then edit it.
After that i can just drag all the timeline clips which is edited to the library. So I can keep it for next time if i wanna re-edit.
But Now if did all the editing at the library clips then drag to project, i can not drag the project clips back to library, so how can i keep it for my editing safty?
I do not wanna to edit again the same clips from the library!!! as i need to edit many different short clips together then export to individual videos, and i may need to re-edit.
or i can keep the edited video in project, then i can selected the clips which i willing to export, the rest video who in the project will not be export at the same video? I m wondering....
    please help!!! Urgent!!

Just keep the project. Then you can just duplicate the project and make the next set of changes as needed. By duplicating the project, you are not duplicating the event, just the links to the event library.
This way you are not eating up disk space.
    Does that help?

how do i access the data stored on my time capsule?  for example, if i try to view a photo, i get the option to "view with iphoto" but when i click on "view with iphoto" nothing happens.  i'm having similar trouble openning up movies, music, etc.  it appears as though the files exist / saved on the time capsule (because i can see how much storage they consume), but i can't open them.  thanks!

Unfortunately, Apple removed the feature to "browse backups" in Time Machine backups of iPhoto a few years ago.
You have to restore the entire iPhoto library to a separate location to be able to "see" it, and then choose the specific images that you want use.

"At least 16 GB of free space on the disk onto which you’re installing for 32-bit, or 20 GB for 64-bit (for Microsoft Windows and Windows-based applications)."
That's what Apple proposes in here Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows
Personally I would double these amounts and add to that the diskspace needed for your Windows games.

The time capsule though blinks amber and the Airport Utility shows blinking amber light and has a red circle with the number 1 in it.
There is an error.. probably trivial.. firmware update, default password..
Open the airport utility and find out what the error is.
Simply click the TC and see status in the summary page.. it will list all the errors and what you should do.. fix or ignore them. ie this TC has an error.. default password.. I chose to ignore.. when I "fix" the problem the LED goes green.
Here is additional TC.. it is blinking amber with faults.
Click the fault. eg default password.
You can ignore or edit .. if you click edit it will take you to the full setup where you can change the settings.
I ignored my errors and now it is green..

  • How good are the WD MyBook Studio Ed. Refurbished Replacements?

I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition for Mac - External Hard Drive that is 2 years old, and has started to have problems.
It keeps running constantly and gets very warm. I unplug the cables from it, let it cool for a few minutes, replug the cables, and do a forced backup.... but the next scheduled backup, it starts up and will keep running for hours without doing the backup.
So I unplug it again, let it rest, replug, then do a forced backup, and everything repeats itself as previously mentioned.
I called WD Support this morning, and she said that I could send it in, and they would send me a refurbished replacement. I have read on other forums (tools, etc.) that people send items in for a replacement, and they get back a refurbished unit that is all banged up, and doesn't work properly.
My question is... how good is the WD refurbished replacements that they send back. Are they in good condition? Does anyone have any experience with WD on this?
I have even thought of just getting a new external HD from another company, (G-Drive, LaCie, etc), but I have seen mixed reviews on them. I like the G-Drive Solid State (no moving parts) but that is over $500.... too rich for my blood.
    Any recommendations on either question.
    Thanks,
    Jim

From what I've read on the internet WD offer poor customer service and their products are of low quality. Certainly I have experienced first-hand many WD hard drives failing, mostly with the dreaded click click click. I've only known two or three Seagates go this way in all the years I've been using hard drives (pretty much since the early days of 120MB).
It may be expensive, but I highly recommend the ReadyNAS Duo as a backup solution and / or as general network storage. I have one set up with two 1TB Seagate NS drives in mirrored mode and it works very well. Seagate NS drives are enterprise-standard, designed for use in RAID hardware where they will be in close proximity to one another, Seagate AS drives are not designed for this purpose and so may fail in this situation. Other hard drive manufacturers make enterprise-grade drives too, I'm guessing that the ones WD use in their MyBook products are not these drives though which might explain why there are so many failures. The enterprise-grade drives typically cost about £20 more but I think for reliable backup purposes it's well worth the extra expense.

  • The Intel Mac Mini uses on-board graphics... how good are they?

I'm seriously considering getting an Intel Mac Mini and telling all my friends to get one, too. However, there's one problem - the graphics.
The whole reason I'd want an Intel Mac would be so that I could dual-boot into Windows Vista (when it comes out) in order to play the latest games.
How suitable are the on-board graphics for gaming? Would it be able to play Halo and Command & Conquer Generals well?
Basically, I want to know if it's the equivalent of a 64 MB graphics chip in speed, or if having on-board graphics makes it a bit slower. Does it have hardware acceleration? And is it suitable for smooth casual gaming at an average resolution?

I am very uneasy about finding integrated graphics in the new mini too.
When I first saw the new Mini website on Apple's website I was so excited "intel processor", "4 usb ports", "faster drives" but something was missing from the website; the "graphics" sub-category. I instantly wondering what was up with that, thinking right away obviously the graphics weren't good enough to brag about. I was right. On Apple's MacMini website, on the "Intel Core" sub-category page, bottom of the page, right side there's a weee comment on integrated graphics, "oh." was my only thought.
It's really disappointing to see integrated graphics in the new Mini. That AND the increase in price. The price of the Intel iMac dropped by $100 when it got introduced, but the Intel Mini's price goes up $100 upon introduction, further closing the price between the iMac and the Mini and making the iMac looking more and more attractice in terms of features-performance-price-value. I better run out and buy a Intel iMac before Apple removes the miniDVI-out port (which I'm predicting it will be removed in the next iMac revision)
Hopefully some Intel MacMini review tests in the coming weeks will reveal better-than-expected graphics performance.
I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned this but... doesn't anyone here see that Apple has given us a preview of what's to come by putting integrated graphics in the new Intel MacMini? -- Anyone? I'll tell you -- we're going to see the exact same integrated graphics in the upcoming Intel iBooks, that's what.
