How good does Indesign work over a VPN connection?

We are a small, widely distributed publisher using Adobe Indesign, Incopy etc. We would like to allow access to our server for outside designers, and are looking into a VPN solution. We have implemented a test of VPN, and it appears to work OK for file access, however the load and save times are rather long.
Is anyone using these tools with file access over VPN in a production environment? Please let me know issues, such as reliability, file corruption or other issues. Also, what sort of non-standard configurations do you recommend for the software.
Thanks in advance for discussing this type of environment, because there are a number of advantages for distributed users.

Hi Bob,
From my perspective, direct file access on a single server that is backup up every night has a lot of advantages, including:
Easy and familiar access
Fast access for in-house users, slower but reliable access for remote users
Better security
Easier for users - double click and go
Simpler workflow - no copying files from a "master" source to a third-party cloud drive
Basically, extending the identical resources that are provided in the office through the server, to remote locations seems logical.
Why do you believe that Dropbox and other cloud based solutions are better? I don't see the advantages over VPN.

  • Does NSU work over proxy?

    Does NSU work over proxy?
And if yes how to configure connection?

It isn't fully clear to me whether or not NSU works through a proxy server. Some users say it does, others say it doesn't. I think NSU would only work through a proxy if the following conditions are met:
The proxy allows connection to the website where the Nokia service Updater gets its updates
The proxy allows such connection to take place over FTP (Active)
The proxy doesn't use "old" information for the Nokia site, even though that is fairly recent. The thing is, Proxies can sometimes interfere with connections to the NSU server. These interferences as well as the chance that they occur, need to be minimised. NSU seems to be using the settings for your default browser with regard to proxy severs, so if at all possible, try to temporarily bypass the proxy if connections to the Nokia domain are required. To achieve this, create a rule that bypasses the proxy for *.nokia.com on all protocols (HTTP, FTP, HTTPS and Secure FTP).
I cannot deny that Nokia Software Updater does sometimes work over proxy, although reports on this differ each time...

  • Does EAX work over digital-out in ster

    Hi there!
I wanna know does EAX work over digital-out in stereo? And does CMSS 3d work? If not, why not?
ThxMessage Edited by OutaSpace on 0-5-200703:52 AM

Yes, EAX supports 2 speakers. EAX is an extension to DirectSound3D, and basically uses reverberation to model the sound of a room. Thus, EAX is an easy way to say this room sounds like a stone-walled church in general. DS3D models the specific room, and computes from the various sound sources what happens at the observer's position. Then it attempts to compute what would happen at each observer's eardrum, and what the available speakers need to do to cause that. 2-speaker EAX is 3D, not 2D like "surround sound" really is, but it seems easier to place sound behind you if a speaker is there. How well 3D positional audio works varies among people.

  • How well does windows work?

How well does windows work on a Mac? I am thinking of getting a mac book pro and I would want to use the MAC OSX most of the time but sometimes on the road I will need to use windows for work. If I install windows also how well does it work?? Have you had any problems?

Lots of questions! I'll do what I can, I am newish to Macs and not an IT expert.
I use a MacBook when out and about, it seems fine, better when I upped the ram and HD. I'm not sure whether "better" is the right term. The pro's bigger screen and keyboard may be useful - your choice. The MacBook is my choice because of weight and price, I'm not sure what to get next time. I think I prefer portability for travel and Mac Pro power for deskbased work. The graphics driver would be the deciding factor for Cad etc for me. Not an issue so far and it's a 2 year old MacBook.
I did put a new hard drive in, the partitions were too small. A 250gb drib=ve is MUCH cheaper than a new machine, simple to install. I allowed the max XP partition at 30gb (FAT).
AV - antivirus software for XP - essential to keep clean files.
Leopard - run BootCamp and follow the instructions. It will tell you when to insert the XP disk etc. Mine was choosy about the XP version, you need a recent one. Early SP1 just don't work.
I prefer to use BootCamp and not Fusion etc - simply to maximise the MacBook resources - it's not sharing anything. That may be why I can run the apps. You just need a little planning on what you are going to work on.
    Think that's all , as I said, I'm just a user.

  • How well does Captivate work with Flash?

I'm kind of new to e-learning. I can create interactivity in Flash  just have not used e-learning software, currently we have Articulate and  it seems to be limited to actionscript 2 and player 6 for some things I  need to do. Below is the description of what I have done.
I created a module built in flash which has 4 questions (will have many more). The data and images are loaded in using an XML file. The questions require  the user to select the correct image, if he doesn't, he is asked to  push a button, to go back. When he selects the correct image he can move to the next question.
I need the module to work in  a linear fashion, in articulate the user can move forward and back to any question as  he wishes because the navigation is on the articulate template and does  not control the swf.
How well does flash communicate with captivate? Can I  pass variables? Can I restict the user from moving forward until a flash  "widget is complete"?
    Any help is appreciated!

At the end of the day, the presentation is compiled into AS3 so you can easily communicated with Captivate. Actually, what you need to do is a Captivate Question Widget. If you build your swf as this, you'll be able to edit your questions from within Captivate and benefits from their LMS tracking features and some more.
I'm pretty sure that you can block to move to the next question but maybe someone else can corroborate.

  • [solved] SSH doesn't work over PPTP VPN with pptpclient

I just got set up with access to my work's PPTP VPN. Using pptpclient I can establish a connection and ping servers. I can use telnet to confirm ports 22, 80 etc are accessible and I can access web services in my browser, but SSH doesn't work.
When I try and SSH to a server it just hangs for a minute and then "Connection closed by 10.70.11.10". Wondering if SSH was using my default route rather than the appropriate tunnel, I tried setting my default route to use the VPN, and ping, telnet, nmap etc still seem to function and return expected results, but SSH still hangs and closes. There are no entries in the sshd log on the servers that I attempted to get access to. I have both Arch and CentOS servers and I cannot get to either via SSH.
My colleague connected to the VPN on his mobile phone and managed to SSH to a server, so it doesn't seem that the VPN is blocking this... any ideas?
    Thanks
    [update]
Solved! I found that in /etc/ppp/options, un-commenting -mru fixed this for me:
    # Disable MRU [Maximum Receive Unit] negotiation (use default, i.e.
    # 1500).
    -mru

  • Nokia 5800 - mfe does not work over wifi

    Folks,
Am trying to use MFE to sync google calendar.
I 've created a profile and it works perfectly when I synch over WAP.
But the costs pinch me, so I tried synch'in over wi-fi, but this fails all the time with the error "unable to connect to server. Verify your connection settings and try again"
I have changed the connection profile to Internet. It just doesnt want to work over wifi.
    please help!

I already have the default destination to internet. But it still doesnt give me the pop-up which asks me to choose the internet connection.
But under Settings>>Connectivity>>Destinations>>Internet, I have 2 access points.
    Pri#1 - Vodafone Mobile connect
    Pri#2 - my wi-fi access point.
Does this make any diff? Should I try flipping the priorities?
    cheers!

  • Does iMessage work over 3G?

I believe iMessage works only on wi-fi between iOS5 devices, with both sides needing to be on a wi-fi network. Recently, I have sent and received texts when I know I have not been on wi-fi, but on my 3g Verizon network. The other side may or may not have been on wi-fi. The thing is: Both the sent and recieved messages show the blue color theme vs. the green as for regular texts.
    Does iMessage REQUIRE 2-way wi-fi?
Are there situiations where iMessage will work over the cellular network?
If wi-fi IS rquired, why do I see the blue balloons?
    TIA,

  • How good does it count the steps?

For those of you who owns the Sony Smartband Talk I wonder how good it counts the steps? I've read reviews of Sony's first smart band that says it does not count steps correctly and that there are sometimes large margin of wrongs. How do you feel about it so far? Dare I buy Sony Smart Band if I want it to count steps reasonably accurate?

I wouldnt buy it as a pure step counter if i was you. Honesty think jawbone and fitbit are the best in that area. main part of the smartband talk which apeals to me is that it does a bit of everything else plus gives a good enough view of my activity thoughout the day.

  • How to make CGI work over a GSM/GPRS connection?

I've compiled the G-Server as a stand-alone app.  It works fine.  You can access it from our intranet or the internet using a hardwired PC or a PDA using wireless.
I'm setting up an application to interact with a pc running G-Server and PDA internet explorer over the GSM/GPRS network.  I'm using a Siemens SX66 PDA running Pocket PC 2003.  The PC will serve as the server and interact with remotes using browsers which will communicate using the CGI vi's from the Internet Toolkit.
All scenarios work, expect for one.  I can use the PC internet explorer and interact with the server and all is well.  I can use the PDA over the wireless network and all is well.  I went to an outside source and connected to the server via the internet and it worked fine.  The end result needs to work over the cell network (GSM/GPRS).  Ultimately, it must work with PDA's and Blackberries but at this time I would like to see it do any CGI function through the cell network.  Also, I'm using Cingular and Nextel and both react the same, their engineers are researching the problem but neither have came up with anything yet.
The main page of the server is basically a login page.  After the user enters their password then presses okay the server calls a passwordverify.vi to valid the password.  On the PDA it wants to download a 85 byte passwordverify.vi file.  It doesn't matter what you do it doesn't respond to any choice available.  On the Blackberry, it gives an error number and says "unable to display web page", and it quits there.
Has anyone attempted to use the Internet Toolkit CGI functions over the cell network (GSM/GPRS)?  The server is working awesome except down this avenue.  Unfortunately, the customers we're dealing with will be using the cell network.
    Thanks
    Michael

    This sounds interesting,
Since it has been a while since you posted this message, please let me know if you managed to get it to work.
Have you tried using a PC with a GPRS modem and then trying to access your web server, using the same APN you tried with the PDA's? If you don't have a modem, you can easily connect your mobile phone.
    Some importent notes using GPRS:
Sometimes there can be a lag when using GPRS, its packet switched. After my own experience with GPRS the max lag I've had between two GPRS devices on the public network can be up to 10 (even heard from others up to 20) seconds, but when the TCP communication is stable and you have a continious packet flow little lag occurs, but lag must be taken into consideration. since you do not have a continous flow to begin with, make sure you set correct timeouts at your server. Also remember GPRS is not perfect.
Maybe you need to adjust some timers at your server configuration?
You could also try to put the web server on the GPRS network and the same APN and try to see if communication works between GPRS to GPRS if you have the equipment laying around somewhere..
I have not used GPRS to access a G-web server, but have worked with both GPRS and CGI, and I would really like to hear if you managed to get this to work.

  • Does Facetime work over 3-G or just Wi-Fi ?

No. It only works over WiFi.

  • How do I set up a PPTP VPN connection?

I've just arrived at uni to find that in my dorm I don't get wifi reception, and the lack of ethernet port in my MacBook Air means I can't just connect via the ethernet port in the wall. Luckily I brought my AirPort Express with me.
Now the uni internet operates by VPN over a PPTP connection, and given that they do state they're happy for students to connect whatever routers they like, I went right ahead. Trouble is, despite listing the fact that the AirPort Express supports PPTP, I'm not sure how to go about setting it up. A quick google revealed very little. The IT department was happy to provide the logon domain and server address, but I don't know where in the interface to put them, much less where to select PPTP.
I've been able to get an IP on the thing, but not one indicative of having logged in to the VPN.
    Ideas? Thoughts?

  • How to prevent packet forwarding over non-MPLS connection.

I'm wondering if it is possible to configure Cisco ESR to not forward packet over non-MPLS connection(VPI/VCI=0/32) when an LSP for its destination has not been established, while allowing control packets(BGP, LDP, OSPF) to be sent over non-MPLS connection. The reason why I ask about is as follows.
Referring to the following network configuration,
    R1 --- Cisco_ESR --- ATM_LSR --- LER --- R2
    <--> non-MPLS connection
    ----------------------->
    LSPs
    ----------------------->
In the ordinary operation, when a packet arrives at Cisco_LER from R1, it gets forwarded over an LSP if available, while getting forwarded over non-MPLS connection(VPI/VCI=0/32) if the corresponding LSP is not available. In the configuration mentioned above,ATM_LSR does software-based packet processing for incoming packet through non-MPLS channel, while doing cell-switching for LSP traffic. Thus if ESR sends packet over non-MPLS connection, e.g, STM-1c, the ATM_LSR could get crashed or time-critical control traffic could be delayed or lost, thereby resulting in BGP/LDP session failure between ESR and ATM_LSR or LER.
In summary, my question is how to prevent Cisco_ESR from forwarding packets over non-MPLS connection when LSPs for their destinations are not available due to LSP failures.
    Thanks.
    Yongjun.

It already is, except for Aliens, they have access to everything on your phone(they always have had this access) .
