How good is TC as router?

Just bought TC and am curious if I should just keep my existing ethernet router/WAP (both DLink) or just use TC services.
One big thing I'm wondering - my DLink router has a hardware firewall and it has, from what I've seen so far, a much more detailed and configurable admin tool than TC for doing things like setting DHCP settings, filters, etc.
One thing of note - while I understand the mac to be fairly safe from viruses, etc, I do have a Bootcamp partition (for gaming) and, of course, Windows is NOT a safe platform to have attached to the internet without protection.

The Tech Specs for the TC state "NAT firewall".

  • Where can I get E60 or E50 + how good with Route 6...

    I want to get an E60 (or E50 if I can't get the E60)?
Someone told me I can pick one up for about £80 on PAYG.
I've searched: and there aren't many places that sell the phones.
E60: nothing out there... and only 3 for sale on eBay.
E50: available on eBay... but I can't find a retailer that sells them.
The *only* reason why I want to buy: to use with Route 66.
Can someone tell me: how good are either phones with the software?
    Thanks.
    OM

As keith alluded to if you stay with SL and get a version of Aperture that runs on it you will be locked into that. There will be no more updates for Aperture or the Raw Camera bundle.
So if that version of Aperture supports your camera and you have no plans to change cameras to something that is not supported in that version then you will be fine.
If you think you might be getting a new camera at some point then you might just want to bit the bullet and do the upgrades now.

  • How to load Cisco E2500 router software to Mountain Lion

I have a MacBook Pro.  After struggling with a setup of a new Cisco E2500 router, I discovered the cd's software was incompatible with Mountain Lion.  I understand there was a Cisco software update but the update isn't available for the 2500 router.  I found the router's IP address.  It's 192.168.1.1.  Can anyone tell me - in plain English - if I can install the software without the cd.  Please tell me how in the same plain English. I did see a forum mention that if one does use the IP address, one should not change the factory provided ID and password.  Since both provided ID and password are "admin", and if the comment is true, then that won't work because it's as good as leaving the router unlocked. Does anyone know if the comment is true?

Router setup is not my forte; however, my instinct tells me that you will need to set it up - the other question is (and, again, not my forte): my ISP allows me to have one router. If I want another, I have to set up the first one as a "gateway" to send the signal to the second one (essentially as an extender which you said did not work). You might want to check with your ISP (the building internet provider) on how to get to routers working and/or someone with networking expertise may reply here (I can't tell from your post category, but there is a subcategory in the Mountain Lion forum specifically for networking problems:)

I managed to log in, and it all seems in order. so the problem must be with my computer.
when i go to the tab of the wireless it just says: "Wi-fi: Looking for Networks" all the time!
Then it find a networks, then it drops, then it finds it again. it's a pain. I think it has gotten worse since I uptated the system from Snow Leopard to Maverick. Any suggestions? Anyone else with this problem?
    Thank you so much!

    Hi there,
It sounds to me like you could have a corrupt network preferences file.
Here's what I suggest you do:
    1. Open System preferences from the dock icon.
    2. Navigate to Network and open that pane.
    3. Click on Wi-Fi, in the left hand pane and highlight it.
    4. Click the minus button at the bottom of the pane to remove Wi-Fi from the list.
    5. Click Apply.
    6. Click on the plus button and select "Wi-Fi" from the drop down list.
    7. Click Apply.
    8. Quit System preferences.
You should now have effectively reset your Wi-Fi interface. Now try connecting to your wireless network again and (hopefully) everything should work as expected.
    I hope this info helps.

  • How to setup a second router?

Does anyone know if there are instructtions somewhere that will tell me how to setup a second router in front of my Actiontec MI424?
I am trying to use a Sonos music system through my computer and it has been recommended to me that I try to use a different router in front of the Actiontec.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Strange thing to recommend, did they say why?
The Sonos system appears to be just an in house music distribution system that besides accessing in house dvices can also access web based music sources.  Are you trying to stream audio via RTSP? as I see another post here regarding what looks like packet fragmentation issues when accessing RTSP thru an Actiontec router.

  • How To Use Your Own Router with Out Loosing Verizon's FIOS Services

How to use your own router with Verizon’s FIOS Service
First, you need a basic understanding of how FIOS works but unfortunately there are two types of FIOS systems out there. All of the systems utilize a fiber optic cable to bring TV, phone and internet to your location over one optic cable. In addition these systems provide interactivity including widgets, remote DVR, movies on demand and so forth via an IP (Internet Protocol) signal.  Your STB (Set Tip Box) requires both a video and IP signal. The IP signal is necessary for all of the aforementioned interactivity.  The fiber cable terminates at the Optical Network Terminal or ONT for short.  The ONT converts the optics into a digital signal that can be utilized by ones equipment.  From the ONT your video, phone and internet are provided to the location.  This is where things can differ as the internet signal can be provided via a coaxial (MoCA or Multimedia over Coax Alliance) or RJ45 Cat5 (Ethernet) cable.  It is important to identify and understand the differences of these two setups.  In my case I have my internet entering via Ethernet cable, which in my humble opinion makes things a heck of a lot easier.
How does one tell the difference? In most cases it’s rather simple; just look at the Verizon’s router WAN (Wide Area Network) Port.  Does it have a RJ45 (Ethernet) or Coax (TV cable Cord) going to it? If the router’s WAN port doesn’t have a coaxial connector then one will need to convert the MoCA signal into a usable Ethernet signal that routers understand. The easiest way is to use Verizon’s router as a bridge. In this method the Verizon’s router simply converts the signal and passes it along to your own router. The challenge is to try to maintain the interactivity that FIOS TV provides. Because of this one needs to supply the IP routed signal back to the FIOS router.  There are multiple methods for doing this and I would recommend investigates which one make the most sense.
In my particular case the IP signal was provided by Ethernet.  Again there are various ways of installing one’s own router. The hardest is to utilize Verizon’s router as a bridge.  This setup requires configuring Verizon’s router as a bridge and also creating a VLAN (Virtual Local Area Networks). In addition one needs to set up their own router so it will work with the various routing tables and networks. For me this is too complex for the average person and it can be difficult to trouble shoot if something goes wrong. Please consider that Verizon will not support utilizing third party routers.
The easier method is to request an Ethernet signal (if you don’t already have one) from their ONT.  I would highly recommend getting your hands on a NIM or Network Interface Module. This device is used to convert Ethernet to Coaxial so it can be fed back to your STBs.  These can be purchased online and Verizon technicians can be a valuable resource with these sorts of acquisition.  At the very least they can point you to the right direction.  Once you have a NIM the rest is rather simple.
Log into the current Verizon Router.
Located the router’s MAC address and copy it down.
Go to the port forwarding section and copy down the Applied Rules.
    Example:
    Network Computer/Device: 192.168.1.100:63145
Application & Ports Forward:  Application UDP Any -> 6347
Note: There may be up to three entries for each one of your Set Top Boxes.
Look at your current device list, typically found on the home screen. Copy down your STB MAC and IP address.
    Example:
    IP-STB1
    Connection Type: Ethernet
    * IP Address: 192.168.1.100
    IP Address Allocation: DHCP
    *MAC Address:                07:73:fFe:ad:8b:3f
    * Things you will need to write down
Go to the network section and look for the main Ethernet connection.  Select this and then select more setting, typically found at the bottom. Release the current lease.
    Remove the Verizon router
    Install your router
Connect the NIM by plugging in an Ethernet from one of the routers LAN (Local Area Network) ports to your NIM. Then connect the coax cable, the same cable that was used by Verizon router.
Set you DHCP routing IP pool to accommodate Verizon’s STB IP’s  (note their IP’s start at 192.168.1.100)
Go to DHCP section and reserve the STB IP’s by inserting the IP’s and MAC addresses. This shall ensure that nothing else utilizes the same IPs as the STBs thereby preventing IP address conflict.
Add the port forwards from Step 5 above.
Clone Verizon’s Mac Address utilizing the info from step 2
Finish setting up the router in typical fashion.
Unplug and re-plugin your STB’s and test functionality.  It’s best to try using a widget or Movie on demand function.
Note: if the new router can net get an internet signal contact Verizon’s support and have them release the IP and reset the ONT.
EVERYTHING should be working at this point.

3 Go to the port forwarding section and copy down the Applied Rules.
    Example:
    Network Computer/Device: 192.168.1.100:63145
Application & Ports Forward:  Application UDP Any -> 6347
Note: There may be up to three entries for each one of your Set Top Boxes.G
Your display obviously is not like mine as mine does not dosplay the port associated with the ip address
whatever, the STB's start at 192.168.1.100 and icement by 1 for each
the port addr's will be 63145 alo incrementing by 1
there is 1 entry for each in my pf list
however each ip addr also has a port entry starting at 35000 also incrementing by 1 for each ip addr
For some unknow reason these are duplicated e.g I appear to have 11 entries exaactly the same for each stb and as the fios services rules have no action switc there is nowhere to delete the extraneous garbage.
Why do you clone the mac addr??

My ipod touch will recognize my home wireless network but when I try to select it the wheel just keeps spinning. It looks as though I have a good signal but my router is an older apple extreme. I've updated to the lasted firmware but it's still not working. I have two older imacs and a wii that connect to the router. Any thoughts? Thanks

    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Setting>:General>Reset>Reset Network Settings.

  • How good is password protection in Preview App

I want to open some PDF's in Preview, do a Print command, then when that opens select PDF and then Save as PDF.  When that window opens, I will then click on Security Options and enter a password that will be required to open the doc.  I need to then email these docs to a person on a PC.  They have Adobe Acrobat.  I've dropped one of these docs on my Windows 7 Virtual Machine.  When it opens using Adobe Acrobat it asks for the password and when entered correctly, the doc opens.
So far so good.  But how good is the password protection???  I've been told that Office has had good encryption (128 bit AES) since Office 2007.  But what about Preview on the Mac being opened by Acrobat on a PC???  Bad?? Good??
There are reasons why it is not reasonable to try to drop a large number of pdfs into Microsoft Word so I'm leaning instead toward just protecting the Preview PDF versions.
    Thoughts???
    thanks... bob..

As I tell people in the Reader and Acrobat forums, if someone wants to "crack" a PDF badly enough, nothing (including DRM) will prevent them.
AFAIK, Preview's encrytpion is as good as Acrobat's.
The password rules are the same. Longer and more cryptic = better protection. 12 characters is better than 8... 16 is better than 12... Upper & lower case, numerals and special characters.

  • IPAD 6.0 (MD519C/A) wifi,cellular - how good is this model?

I would like to buy Apple iPad with Retina display (MD519C/A), 16GB, WiFi, Cellular 4G, White from Staples.ca. I would like to know if anyone has used this model and how good is this. Also, whether it's unlocked or not? I want to send the ipad to Bangladesh and the customer representative at Staples was not sure whether that is unlocked or not. I would like to know if it would work there.
I have pasted the URL for this ipad. Thank you.

Without checking myself, just be aware that the iPad OS generally only provides error signals that are relevant. It wouldn't seem relevant to report on a missing SIM with Cellular turned off, and I'd therefore expect that you wouldn't see that message after having done so.
Don't turn on Airplane Mode, however (that's what's shown by the "little airplace icon") as that also shuts down your wifi.
And yes, with Cellular off it just says "iPad" there on the status bar, exactly as described in your User's Guide and other locations.

  • I have a Linksys WRV200 wireless router and the wireless signal is not working properly so I cannot connect to the internet wirelessly. the wireless light has a fast green blinking light. how can I fix the router?

I have a Linksys WRV200 wireless router and the wireless signal is not working properly so I am unable to connect to the internet wirelessly.  The wireless light is blinking green very quickly and I connect and disconnect from the network constantly.  How do I get the router to work properly

    Hello James,
The flashing WLAN light means activity (data getting transferred). Try disconnecting all your devices and check whether the light is still flashing or disconnect the router from internet and do the check.
Do you have your SSID as linksys or the default one? If your neighbor has the same SSID, then traffic could result from your neighbor's one. Try changing your SSID and password. Make your security WPA/WPA2.
    Hope this helps,
    Thanks

  • How good is the Collections.shuffle() method?

    Hello
I have an ArrayList which I want to bootstrap from. I did not find any method to randomly select an entry from the ArrayList, so I use the shuffle method first, and then get the first entry (which should be random after each shuffle). However, I do get some strange results from this. On average the numbers gotten when I sample small series is lower then the ones I get sampling longer series. There is no aspect with the data that should imply such behavoiur. Does anyone know how good my way of sampling is (using shuffle), and if the shuffle method really is a good way to randomize?
    Regards
    JT

I think the API docs probably give the best answer to this question. Notice the word "approximately" In the shuffle(List) method. Also note that shuffle.(List, Random) depends on how "good" Random is.
I guess you'd have to construct some form of test to see if either shuffle was good enough for your requirements.
    Cheers

  • How good is the audio jack?

In the past I've connected my iPod to my stereo using a mini to RCA adapter. It gave me a weak signal (even with the volume turned all the way up). How good is the Mac Mini's audio when plugging into a stereo? Thanks.

Optical out to a DAC supports 24-bit (and even 32-bit on the new mini, whatever that is for, I guess DSP). It shares the analogue headphone jack out, but when you put a mini Toslink in it, you get the light out.
You can also use USB out or use a USB/coax converter (which I am messing around with). Others have told me that the USB/coax converter is better because it externally clocks the signal, but I cannot hear any difference between that and the optical out. Optical goes up to 96kHz sampling frequency. To get higher, you need the USB/coax adapter.
The NOVA that I have, linked to above, supports 16-bit output from USB and 24-bit output from optical toslink and coax. I think the USB limitation might be imposed by the software in the DAC, however, not at the mac end.

  • How good is the 3G arial on the iPad?

How good is the 3G arial on the iPad? For example is it better than the iPhone 4 one?

I'm using the IGP on 2 networked pc's and to be honest have had no problems with it. Runs all my games at ease inc the network games, (some are very power hungry too). Ok not as fast as the latest all singing cards but costs you nothing. You can always stick another card in if you get problems. One thing though, gotta make sure you make use of the Dual channel memory, this really speeds things up with the IGP in use.

  • How good is the new Adobe Reader IOS for fillable forms and interactive pdfs?

At last adobe reader for ios has been updated so now fillable forms can be completed on ipad/iphone but how good is it?
I've tested a form and reset form/print form and save as buttons do not seem to work.
Form submit seems ok, just wondered what others thought?
Also the new Adobe Reader IOS is now able to display interactive pdfs with buttons such as go to next page etc yet page transitions do not work? Again whats everyone elses opinion on the reader ios update?

My preliminary experience is that Reader does better with forms than with interactivity.
I've written a couple postings on InDesignSecrets.com about PDF readers for tablets. Here's the latest one:
Finding the Best Tablet PDF Reader
You should also check out PDF Expert (US $9.99) which handles interactivity better than Reader if that is important to you.
