How Hard for FCP User

For the last 10 years I've been using Final Cut Pro as my NLE, but with the release of CS5 I'm seriously looking into moving to it. My question is a simple one: how difficult will it be to move from FCP to Premiere CS5? I figure there will be a small learning curve with a different workflow and names and everything, but how quickly do you think I'll be able to pick it up?

While I'm in need to upgrade my little ibook (rendering takes forever) I wanted to get the opinions of people who use Adobe/ QT Pro/ and mainly FCP users who routinely use this machine for work.
Obviously, the one I'm interested in is the full blown 2.1 Ghz maxed out to the 2.5 Ram.

Well, I actually e-mailed Apple Store support (since that's where I originally ordered the FCP crossgrade). They suggested that I post my question over here.
I don't feel comfortable about making a support call to USA from Finland... they might put me on hold for ages and it would end up costing a lot more than purchasing the component from Apple Store.
I think that the link has been broken for months already, although I'm not sure. Doesn't Apple have any kind of e-mail address to ask about this issue?

Beginning Questions for FCP user

Hi - I'm new to FCP (have used Premiere and Avid in past) and I have several questions. I have an Aja Kona 3 system with breakout box and want to know if it's possible to view HD footage captured on a Sony HD EX1 on my NTSC monitor? What should my Audio/Video setting be? I have 2 30"Apple HD cinema monitors and a Sony NTSC monitor.
Also - Do I always want to edit in the native format that I shot footage in when it comes to HD? This is my first time working w/HD, so I'm a bit confused, as I have a project that requires me to mix HD and SD footage, but I'm used to watching SD footage on an external NTSC monitor in real time.
Also - when worked with 24p SD footage in the past, I always had to do a 3:2 pulldown in After Effects - is this not necessary to do with HD footage now to manipulate it?
What does anyone recommend for my sequence timeline settings in general then? thanks -

Yes, the Kona3 can down convert HD to NTSC, those settings are controlled with the AJA control panel.
Your video settings (typically) should match the settings of (the majority of) your captured footage settings.
With the possible exception of HDV (in combination with the power of your computer) yes, you should typically edit in the native format of your footage when possible.
If your using a mix of HD and SD you'd base your settings on the desired end product, HD or SD.
You can not mix frame rates within a sequence. If you shot 24p set your sequence to 24p.
Sequence settings, in general, should match your captured footage native settings.

Speech recognition or other solution for FCP user with hand injuries?

I work with final cut pro on a daily basis and have repetitive stress injuries on my hands/wrists from years of keyboard and mouse use. I was wondering if there is any way to use hands-free speech recognition software with a graphical program like fcp? Any other suggestions would be most welcome as well...

Don't know about hands-free speech recognition, but I have a wacom tablet and pen that I love. Some people hate the pen but I love it. I allows free movement throughout the program with little effort of movement. It's also great for photoshop and After Effects when you're doing drawing type functions.
I'm assuming that you've seen a doctor and that you hand is being treated for injury. Correct?
Just a thought. My husband had carpal tunnel sydrome for months when a nasty hand injury forced surgery and they fixed the carpal tunnel while they were in there. Guys....

How do I email a pdf that I created so when the recipient receives it the bookmarks are activated, i.e., so he sees what I see when opening the document.

Open PDF Form in Acrobat XI then choose File > Save As Other > Reader Extended PDF > Enable More Tools (inclues form fill-in & save)...
Then, save the form with new name and it's gonna work.

I entered Iphoto for my user and only photo up until 2012 were in the library. I thought the restore would do the incremental Time Machine backups too.....

How to unlock internal Hard drive for other user

i have fast user switching set, and i can log on to that user's desktop. however, when i try to start iTunes, i get a message that says the hard disk is locked. So iTunes won't open. I had set a whole bunch of songs for this user, but now can't seem to open itunes. It's a power PC (not intel), and software is all up to date (it was after the last upgrade that this may have happened.
BTW, onthe get info pop up, i unlocked the drive and set the priveledges for the HD to read and write, but still get the locked HD message when opeing iTunes.
Any suggestions?

Well i appreciate your help. Two followups to report.
1. i just made a new account and imported the old itunes music. This worked, so i deleted the old account.
2. now for the bad news. When i tried to restart the computer, it just freezes after lighting up the screen. then after about 3 min, the fan starts blowing full steam. Sounds bad based on past experience. So i'm off to the genius bar tonite and hope the HD and backup HD are still OK.

You are most of the way there. Each user having access to hard drive is the key. If users are limited in file privileges this is harder.
Any files you add to your library and any files she adds to her library are available to the other. Just not automatically. Each user must add the files to their own library using the add file or add folder option from menu bar.
What I have done is set library location to a location outside of My Documents\My Music. On my network storage I have a folder names s:\itunes. Both accounts iTunes are set to use this location for the library.

I have an airshow website where volunteers and vendors can apply online (www.hollisterairshow.com) . The city attorney requires that we have a wet signature on a printed application form so the volunteer/ vendor currently has to print their application at the time they apply online, then sign it and mail it in and this works fine. Unfortunately, we have had a lot of instances where volunteers/ vendors needed to print their application again and the only way we could do this was for an administrator to print their application to a pdf file and e-mail the file to them. So, I'd like to improve this process by automatically sending an e-mail to the applicant when they apply online with a link to a printable page and containing a key pointing to their application. This way, volunteers/ vendors could print and sign their application whenever they want and as many times as they need to. Each volunteer is a single row in a volunteer table and each vendor is a single row in a vendor table.
The key I use in the tables is a sequential key automatically incremented by MySQL so I would end up sending them a link looking something like www.hollisterairshow.com/printvolunteerapp.php?volunteernumber=27 . This would work, but it wouldn't be hard for a volunteer to change it to a different volunteernumber and so get access to someone else's personal information, which would not be acceptable. So, I'm thinking I need a secondary key that is somehow scrambled and used as an secondary index in the table so I'd be sending a link that mght look like www.hollisterairshow.com/printvolunteerapp.php?volunteerkey=sygew . So I'd really appreciate some advice on how to create a scrambled secondary index for each volunteer or vendor and plug it into the link I send them in the e-mail.

Your question is not clear whether you want to create account or you want to create agent.

I have read through some of the tutorials that you have directed me too and they are very useful, thank you. however there are still a few things that i am not clear about. I am using net beans 5.0 I have placed a text file named Results.txt into the project at the root so the program can view it.

How to increase the performance in server 2008 R2 for RDP users

My application take to much time to load. If anyone double click on mail client the exe file will appear in task manager but it will open after 5 mins. how to increase the performance.

SC2600 Intel motherboard with total 24 core processors and 32 GB RAM and 8 TB Hard Disk. RAID 5 is configured which has two lungs one is 167 GB for C drive and other is 4.5 TB for D drive.

Thin-clients connect to V-space server installed in server for RDP users to get connected.
we have installed around 20 applications including printer and scanner driver. And apps are has below,
Firefox browser, windows mail, Adobe acrobat XI, canon printer and scanner drivers, Epson printer and scanner driver, E scan anti-virus, office 2007, v space, power ISO, win-rar,Tally and e token drivers and some backup software's.
Below are the services and features enabled,

I don't know of any way to do that by user.
I used to partition my HD and that sets a hard limit by partition, but by user? I don't think it can be done.

I am wondering what is the suggested user rights for a user doing daily work with final cut pro?
Should this user be an admin or restricted?
What is the suggested - best practice?

If you're the only user, you need to have admin privileges...
If you're not the only user, and you don't trust the other users, then just give one person admin privileges... That said, I know of several bays here in Denver which are used extensively by many users and they all share the same user account without a problem... just sort of depends on how much you trust all those different folks.
FCP runs fine either way, but only admin's can install updates or other applications. In some cases you can even set up systems that won't allow users to even use utilities... I think this is likely taking things a bit far, but it's certainly not unknown to do this. (keeps them from reformatting drives for example).
But in and of itself, FCS runs OK with or without admin privileges.
