How hard is it to learn Photoshop ?

Hi everyone,
Curious in learning how to use this software, have heard some good and fair comments about it's use.
I have a few websites I design myself and am looking to now enhance all of my graphics.
I rank well on google, so I'm trying to not to lose any advantage with having slow graphics or just an average looking site.
Still learning how to edit images, it's fun, but time consuming to a newbie such as me.
I am currently using gimp, but feel its very limited.

It's all relative, and also depends on how much you really need to know about Photoshop in terms of the things you require for your work. For web related work it may take a beginner from a couple of weeks to a couple of months to become proficient.
A word of warning, though. If you are looking for the best png export with the perfect balance between quality and file size: look elsewhere. Photoshop's save for web function is far too limited in this regard. You will have to post-process PNGs generated by Photoshop in third-party tools, like Color Quantizer.
Hopefully PS's web export will see an overhaul at some point. The png export is pretty worthless in the current versions. I believe there are some png export plugins that remedy this partly - but you will still not have the best control.

Just how hard is it to learn FrameMaker?

If I am highly experienced with InDesign/Pagemaker, Flash, Illustrator and Photoshop, how hard would it be to come up to speed on FrameMaker? Any online training resources you would recommend to shorten the learning curve? I am interviewing for a tech writing job and need to know (a) how fast I can learn FrameMaker and (b) what online training resources you might recommend to get me there F-A-S-T!!

Some of it's a question of mind-set – if you're an experienced InDesign user, then you've already grasped the concepts of styles and page templates. My minimal experience (based on CS5 and FM 10) is that FM offers more for most documents unless you need really fancy lay-out … so the tricky bit (as usual) is working out where product A hides its equivalent for a command in product B; and the fun bit is discovering an idea in product A you'd never even thought of in years of getting to know product B.
The writing skills you bring to the interview are probably more important than the tools skills, imho. As long as you understand how to arrange different bits/types of information and how to make the presentation support the relationship between them, it shouldn't take long for you to add the basics of FM to your toolset. Learning the finer points takes practice, of course, but this forum is a good place for hints and tips.

How hard is Motion 4 to learn

and of course to create my own animations...
How hard is it to learn to do stuff like this (having never touched Motion or FCS before).
I assume I can simply drag and drop my images (PNG, JPG) into Motion and then use particles, and the effects it comes with to get started?
I was able to sorta play with it for about 10 minutes the other day at an Apple Store near me, but wasn't able to successfully import any png files into motion (just showed a black screen).
Is this product similar to other Apple products? Meaning low learning curve to get results?
Mainly I would use Motion4 to create Website Intro's (export the MOV and then make a SWF (Flash File) from the MOV... As well as make some "Demo Reels" of the graphics work I do...
Another animation I would like to create is Signature grows; meaning it looks like someone is signing the screen where a signature grows (kinda like all the floral grows I see). I assume you use a Vector signature and apply a "grow behavior) and export to a MOV... but it might be more complex than that...
Some say After Effects is better, some say Motion4 some say both... Eventually I will have both, but trying to figure out which is easier to learn and get results with out of the box without reading 500 books to learn it...

Not a dumb question at all, welcome to the family.
Unfortunately, we don't have enough information from you or about what might be a huge issue with other folks, although they are using different media types like jpegs.
Very sorry your initial experience has not been satisfactory.
In other versions of Motion, tutorial footage and projects were supplied on the installation disks. I think they've all been moved online. Have you tried any of them?
BTW: If we make any progress on your issues, you should start a new thread.

How easy is learning Photoshop and integrating into FCE?

I have a friend who wanted me to do a montage. When he brought his pictures over, he asked if I could put cute borders and backgrounds on some pictures (like scrapbooking) maybe even words? I called the apple store and they suggested Photoshop? If that's the case, how easy is it to learn, as he wants the dvd by Christmas, and I will be scanning in pictures. What dpi do I set his pictures at to work in Photoshop and then import into FCE? I read somewhere that .jpg do not do transparency - what format should I save them?
I'm hesitate to learn but thought it would be a good idea to learn and I could get a better montage from it, correct?

Susan,
Targa is good image format to use since it is uncompressed and can contain an alpha channel. However, why do you need an alpha channel on a scanned image? With photos I'd normally use JPEG.
When working with the images, if you go down the route of photoshop/elements just save in .psd format since FCE can import that, alpha channel and all.
If you want to avoid spending money then as suggested by Alchroma you can do basic borders and text, etc in FCE. Or there's always the opensource Gimp.app or Gimpshop. These will probably be harder to learn than Photoshop Elements and you won't have a native file import like with photoshop, but you can always export to something like Targa.
With regards to dpi, as said it's not the dpi per se that's important, it's the image size in pixels and what you intent to do with it. See this page on Tom's site for more info: http://www.fcpbook.com/Pages/PS6.html

How much free space is on your hard drive?
How much ram do you have?
Photoshop needs to use your hard drive for scratch space.
If you have more than one hard drive (not partition), you can assign photoshop's scratch disk to another hard drive.

You should take a look at www.lynda.com. They made al lot of courses also about photoshop elements. I don't know if PSE 5.0 is still available, but you can always check. If i am right you can also see what the content is of the course. I watched a few of these courses and i think it's very good.

No, if you mean can you copy the installed version over. That never works because PSE is a highly complex program that strews stuff all over your hard drive and you can never hope to find all the bits and bobs. You should deactivate it on the computer you no longer need, then install from scratch on the new machine.

Use of the tools is pretty much the same in all versions of the program.
"Edit" is a menu item in Photoshop Elements Editor. Don't you see this?

How do I install and use Photoshop actions

I downloaded a zipped file with actions. I've left the file zipped until I learn how to install the actions in Photoshop CC. Any help will be appreciated.

The Advanced menu item was removed by Adobe in Acrobat X. Don't know what a plug-in would do. It probably needs an update.
It's very optimistic to think a plug-in written for one version of Acrobat will run without issues in a future version. The issues aren't usually big, but there's more often something than not.

and i can do simple array programing.

As the previous guy said it is quite easy, and that link should teach you the basics. What I want to remind you of is that Swing uses up more memory when run. But it also have a few nicer extra goodies that make coding a little bit easier. Have fun with it.

How do normal maps work in photoshop? Can I create them?

Hi i am new to photoshop!
I am using photoshop to make textures for my pinball simulator. I've learned how to add color with the lasso select but I want the textures to look better so I wanted to add in more, so I was wondering if I could create a bit-map or normal maps? So I guess, the easiest way to say it is.

First time poster here. I see from posts I've been reading here that many of you are experienced Photoshop users. I hope you can share some advices on best books or videos to help me learn Photoshop.

Spend thousands of hours in front of your computer with this crazy application called Photoshop open! ;) First and foremost, I would read some books written by Dan Margulis....possibly "Professional Photoshop" which will give you a great understanding of color correction. Also, join NAPP http://www.photoshopuser.com/ for however inexpensive it is and watch the video tutorials which are priceless and also able to be downloaded if you have Quicktime Pro, etc. Obviously there is no substitute for time actually working in an application, but different Photoshop seminars like Photoshop World can be helpful, reading books and online tutorials are great, and also some more advanced stuff once you really have a grasp in PS would be something like Dan Margulis's classes which are SUPER intense 3 day classes which propelled me above many of my colleagues in regards to how Photoshop should really be used and what it was intended for...not just running plastic wrap filters. :) Hope this helps! @.

When uploading to Facebook how can I remove the "via Photoshop & Adobe Premiere Elements Uploader" ?
I see there was an earlier posting (http://forums.adobe.com/message/3320214#3320214) which was for version 8, and I can understand the issue, but, (assuming its the same issue) has a remove tagline feature been installed??
Is this also the same in the Pro version?

I do not know if Premiere Pro CS6 CC offers an upload to Facebook export. Strictly an Elements Windows person here.

I do not have any Facebook accounts, so I cannot answer your specific Facebook question, but generalizing I can offer the following suggestions.
If your issue with Publish+Share/Computer/Social websites/Facebook is with tagging, you might want to check the Facebook web site for the Video Manager section of it (or that by some counterpart name). I know that YouTube at the YouTube web site allows the account holder to go into Video Manager and manage his/her tags for the file uploaded there and displaying. Have you been there and done that type of thing for your Facebook upload.

Add On...As suggested in your inserted link, in Premiere Elements can you export to file saved to computer hard drive and then upload that file from there to Facebook at the Facebook web site without the tagging issue?

How hard to make a website like this one ?

Hi, I hope I don't stress people with my status, but I'm a
complete newbie with desire to learn. I just figured out we have
Dreamweaver at school in the Mac studio, adobe version if I recall
correctly and I wanted to make a band website with it, but couldn't
understand where to start.
So first, since I don't want to hire anybody to do it for me,
I would like to know how hard it would be to make a website like
this one :

In my logic, the first step would be to create a background
image with the menu drawn in it then add buttons to them to
navigate. I would then add the content boxes with scroll bars using
the draw div function.
My second question, how do I go about learning this software
? Are courses given somewhere ?

to be hard.
Not that you can't do it. It's just going to take you a lot
of time and

That isn't how that site was built nor the best way to to it.
The site in
question is fairly basic HTML and then styled with a lot of
well put
together CSS.

Don't learn Dreamweaver. Instead, learn HTML, CSS,
Javascript, etc. Getting
a basic understanding of HTML and CSS will then allow you to
figure out
Dreamweaver fairly intuitively, plus you'll have a MUCH
better framework of
understanding to work from.
