How High Do You Raise Your Buffer Size?

I'm curious as to how high those of you who work with dense pop mixes raise your buffer when mixing. I'm working on a mix now with 3 Altiverbs, lots of SSL plugs, delays, comps, etc, and about 55 tracks, about twenty of which are virtual instruments, the rest audio. Things are getting a bit sluggish. I'm at 256 right now.
I'm really not convinced yet that native is ready to do battle with HD;)
The project is running off two internal drives (samples on one, audio on another). Mac Pro Dual 2.8 core, 8g ram.
Thanks
Tom

Well, rendering is what I do when a track is finished, I bounce it to audio INCLUDING the insert effects. It is more of a statement of 'thats finished, AND, I can see an audiofile in the Finder. The Frozen audiofile is in itself not accessible (unless you'ld use some utility to reveal it - but don't try that at home...), it is just a timesaving macro to quickly free up some power (the main reason why it's there), and still be able to tweak the track.
To summarize:
Freeze: +track not finished yet...+
very good feature when in the middle of composing, arranging - still creating, changing... you get the pic. No power lost on applying effects, running the VI etc.
rendering (or bouncing, or exporting audio, basically all the same): track ready!
it is the last step before mixdown.
if you need to see an audiofile in Finder, bounce, if not, freeze.
just my 1.5 Eurocents...
regards, Erik.

    Things i had to set manually;
    1) Keyboard layout, because it defaults to US
    2) Two mouse keys don't work had to manually set, Emulate3Buttons defaults on (wanted it off)
    3) "VideoOverlay" is off by default (or is not auto detected)
    3) needed to set DPI to 96
    4) needed to set color to 24 (defaulted to 8?)
apart from that, the auto detection is vastly improving IMO.
The main premise behind this, is to debate the auto detection capabilities of hardware by xorg.

Download and install Bridge CC, then in the Bridge Edit menu > Color Settings choose the color settings you want to synchronize your CC apps to.

  • How to set local file copy buffer size?

Is there any sysctl parameter or any other mechanism to set or change file copy buffer sizes? I'm backing up a huge number of files to a local hard drive connected by firewire, and I'd like to play with file copy buffer sizes for the best performance. The machine used is a new macbook pro running OS-X 10.6.7. Any ideas?

Here is a bash script that uses the dd command to copy a file.  Use the -b option to set the file size.
    example:
    /Users/mac/config/forumcopy.command -vb  4096  /Applications\ \(Mac\ OS\ 9\)/Civilization\ II/Civ\ II\ Map\ Editor  /Applications\ \(Mac\ OS\ 9\)/Civilization\ II/Civ\ II\ Map\ Editorv8
    I haven't tested this a lot.
Of course, I haven't figured out how best to post code.  Trying HTML mode. Using the <pre> tag.
    #!/bin/bash
    # macteracopy [ -b blocksize ] [-v ] [-V ] input_file output_file
    # Purpose of this script:
    # Copy a file with optional block size. Default size of 4096.
    # Notes:
    # chmod u+x macteracopy

  • How many of you put your name down for priority on launch day?

Hey, I was told the day before launch I would be able to get my Iphone with no reservation but when I got there they told me that they didn't realise their stock would be so low. Luckily I hadn't wasted my time they told me that they will place me in a priority list for the new stock of Iphone.
How many of you did the same as me? And have you had your email telling you to go and collect the phone yet?

I heard from my local Apple Store that they will receive the next batch of iPhone 4's in a week or two also.
    Did you get this email?

  • How often do you charge your battery?

Do you charge your battery whenever it's at home, or only when it's running low? And does either method affect porfmorance?

1 - I turn Airplane Mode on when I'm in my office. If I don't the battery is dead before I get to use it at all. Cellphones and iPhones do a constant re-ping that drains the power.
2 - I have an A/C adapter in my backpack and I plug it in the cafeteria to recharge the battery while watching a tv show or surf the web.

  • [Package Quiz] How well do you know your installed packages?

    Hi,
While checking around and having fun with pyalpm library (alpm wrapper for python), I created a really simple quiz game. It askes you questions about installed packages on your system. Get it! (only 2.4 kbs)
It doesn't have a aur page because I don't know how to do that stuff . In order to be able to run it you will need to have pyqt and pyalpm installed. Then just run gui.py
    Have fun!

    Haha, that's a funny idea!
I think you'll need to work a little on the difficulty of questions if you plan to continue the project.
    – Some are too hard: installed size in the first place, that was a good guess of yours, but packagers and some dependencies are pretty tough, too.
    – Some are too easy: the what package installed … questions can be mostly guessed by filenames
But personally, what I'd welcome most is some info on some of the more obscure packages. This way I could learn a bit about my system while having fun. Installed size is not terribly useful. A little description of the actual purpose of the package would be more enlightening. An example: gtk3 is described as "The GTK+ Toolkit (v3)". It is true, I know. But if your game told me that it's a set of libraries for building graphical user interfaces which is most notably used by Gnome and XFCE, and which is essentially responsible for the look and feel of their applications, I'd be actually smarter than before.
Some packages that I feel would be good candidates for this kind of description are: apr, attr, babl, damageproto, gegl, jack, libxau, neon, orc, speex, tdb. xcb-util.
First of all, thanks for your feedback. I agree that installed size questions too hard too. I might just remove them, it is quite easy. But about the descriptions, I directly use the package description on the system. The one you get when you issue pacman -Qi somepackage. Otherwise it would require tons of time adding description for all the packages.
I guess next thing I would do for this project is to balance the difficulties.

  • How well do you like your nano?

I have (or had is a better term) a 2nd gen 8gb ipod nano. For my brothers 21st birthday, my parents bought him a bloodhound puppy. Talk about a big mistake that was! She decided to use it as a chew toy. Fortunately it still works, but has minor scratches on the metal case (through a rubber protective case no less!). I say minor as it has no huge gouges. It has teeth dents all over it. Thankfully the screen doesnt have a scratch since I had a hard plastic protector covering it. The aluminum shell is scratched pretty bad as well.

I bought 2 nanos: 1 for me, 1 for my girlfriend for a christmas gift. Now that mine looks like crap, I am going to get a new iPods for both her and I and I was wondering how everyone liked your 3rd gen nano?
We are going to sell her iPod nano to cover some of the cost. Is it even worth trying to sell mine?
Here are the two photos of my iPod. What do you think now? Still worth selling?

I never had a Nano before the 3rd gen so I can only really compare it with my other iPods. I bought it specifically for running with the Nike+ Sport Kit. I thought that the fact that it played videos was kind of silly.
I really love the Nano. I find I use it more than my Touch. It's great for workouts as it is so small and light. And yes, I do watch videos on it. Prior to the Touch and the 3rd gen Nano, I'd always wanted the biggest iPod I could buy. However, I find for many day to day uses, a 4 gig Nano is great. A few hundred songs, a couple of games, a handful of podcasts, a television show and I'm ready for my urban commute, a run, and an hour of relaxing at the local coffee shop.
The sound quality is great. I've had no problems with it. In fact, it has probably been the most trouble free of any of my iPods (not that any of them have given me much trouble).
I understand what you mean. I didnt use my old nano for anything but music, a couple podcasts and the rare file transfer. I dont know if I will ever use this to watch video, since I have a laptop, portable dvd player, an portable external hard drive, etc. I dont think i even would need a bigger (HD space wise) ipod than 8gb.
If you dont mine my asking, any reason you have a 3rd gen 4gb Nano, a touch and a 60GB ipod? I understand the nano for the commute, but what about the others?

how long you your iPad be on for it's first charge

You don't have to charge it up to 100% on the first or every charge, nor run it down to empty everytime before you re-charge it. This page just recommends going through at least one charge cycle per month :
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

  • How long should you charge your new iPhone before using?

There is no required charging time. Use it and charge it when its convenient.
You should however not let it drop below 20% charge too often.  Once a month is suggested to re-calibrate the battery meter.
Other than that charge and use as you like.

  • How often do YOU reset your Home Hub, please?

I have Infinity and Home Hub 3.0 type B.
I posted a few weeks ago about my wireless printer going off-line. To cut a very long story short, the problem was my Home Hub. After resetting it, as someone here advised, my printer worked OK.
The same thing happened last week so out came the giant paperclip and I reset my Home Hub = worked.
I'm having problems connecting to a site - on both my IE8/XP and Win7/IE11 PCs - but a friend gets through OK.
So it's not the site, nor IE8.
My Win7 laptop suggested that I run HP Network Check, which I did. It's fixed a problem - it had to "purge my DNS Resolver cache" - sounds painful - but says I must reset my router.
Does anyone else with a Home Hub 3 have to reset it weekly? What affects the frequency of resetting?
    Thanks in anticipation!

I use an HH3, supplied when I joined BT Internet from Virgin due to appalling service from them.
When using a Netgear or TP-Link router/modem our connection was always 'breaking' and being reset - almost every night!  With the HH3 that doesn't happen so often and the throughput is generally better (despite a slower sync speed being reported!). Reverting to the other router/modems gives the same unreliable service as before.  Even trying a different Billion router/modem gives the same old interuptions, etc.  So I suspect the way the BT Internet system is set up favours the HH range but they appear to have fundemental design problems too.
As for how often I have to do a soft restart, or power cycle, depends on how the exchange equipment decides to reset the connection. It can go for a couple of weeks without a change but then decide to make changes most nights (during the night and not the daytime for some strange reason). When it makes the changes, it always reverts to a much slower sync and throughput with often enormously high noise margins (the ideal for us is about 8 dB but it usually resets to 15-18 dB!). So then a reset is called for and afterwards we generally get fair to good results but rarely anything outstanding. Our line length is a serious limiting factor and we'd love to be able to get ADSL2+ but that is not planned and we'll have to wait for the BDUK Intervention plans to find out if we'll ever get fibre in the area.
And as for 'technical support', as an experienced electronics engineer (now retired after 50 years in the business) I have to cry!  They don't know what they are talking about at all, but read from a script that does not cater for many actual problems.
