How hot does your Helix get under heavy load?

I've had my Helix for a few days now and have finally got around to installing some software on it.  I have the i7 with 256gb SSD and 8GB RAM.. so far I've been very impressed with how 'snappy' it all runs and besides a few annoyances with the touchscreen/pen not working correctly 100% of the time am very happy with the system.
Anyways, I wanted to see how the Helix would run when pushed really hard so I had Solidworks running (3d modeling/CAD software) and Netflix going on on an external monitor.  The back of the Tablet became super hot--hot enough that you would definitely not want to touch it (let alone try to hold it) or have it on your lap.  I installed TP fan control and it read that the CPU got up to 86 degrees Celsius.  Granted this is not representative of normal operating conditions, but I'm concerned about how hot it got.  Has anyone else noticed their Helix's running really hot under heavy load? Is this normal?

[Added] Also, I think long term heat damage will be of less concern in case of the Helix. The business already has many years of slate tablets with standard CPUs that did have problems with heat(namely, Asus EP121 which had its LCD turn yellow because of heat, and Samsung Slate 7 which had serious throttling issues in its early days). If Lenovo HAS intelligence to learn from the history, which I want to believe they do, they should probably would have dealt with that, considering this machine may actually be a second revision. And even if I don't believe Lenovo, I still trust in Yamato Lab.

    I've had my macbook early 2011 for a few months now, I have noticed some high temp on the CPU, GPU and the fans dont seem to cool it down by much. Its gotten to the point where i have a external dual-fan for it. As i type this all i have open is Safari, Skype, FileVault2 and LittleSnitch and my Temps are as below

    Not sure if this is good or not I looked up the regular cpu temps and it said it should be running from 10-35C. Sometimes when i have Youtube and other applications running it can get to 50C+ with the fan. If I play Steam games on it i can hit 72C on low graphic settings. With Minecraft and everything else closed it hits 45-65C (Also I have found java doesnt run well in Lion, any suggestions for making Java faster too?) Also I rendered/exported a short video (about 1-2min) and it heated up to around 65C in seconds. For what i run i expect high CPU temps but if i do a full shutdown and boot it up the next morning and only use safari, i dont see any reason why it gets up to 45C instantly when the apple site says 10-35C on regular usage.

    It varies with the version of the MBP, but it's generally accepted that the computer will do a safety shutdown if the temps approach 100C. Therefore the failure temp must be something above 100C.

    Greetings to all.
    I've got a Quad that currently likes to rev up it's fans when I'm doing 4 core calculations (rendering). It gets loud enough that it usually drones out anything not in my immediate area of my desk in my office. Just slightly quieter then the noise it throws off when you run Apple Hardware Test (which has no thermal management, so everything runs at full blast).
    I'm fine with a loud computer, the Quad's still quieter then some of my PC's. But I would like to know- everyone is clamering about the Mac Pro's being quieter then the Quad.
    Is this under load, or just idling?
    Are the Mac Pro's as loud as the Quad when loaded down?

    I have a dual 2.0 GHz Rev. A G5 and now am using a MP 3.0 GHz. The G5 is louder at idle than the MP is at full throttle. I decided to see how loud it would get but maxing out all 4 cores overnight. I came into the room the next day and was bummed it had crashed because it sounded like it had shut off but I moved the mouse and to my delight the thing was still churning away at 400%. It is very very quiet and I have slowly gotten used to the fact that it is nearly impossible to tell if it is asleep or awake. The G5's seem to have a very large delta with regard to fan noise, not so bad at idle and kinda loud when fully loaded. The MP's seem to go from nearly silent to barely audible.
    Someone mentioned above that the machine has only passive heat-sinks on the CPUs which is true but misleading because each heat-sink has a dedicated fan right in-front of it in the case. So far I have added 4x1GB of non-Apple thermal spec RAM, i.e. no heat-sinks - just spreaders, and the fans have not spun any louder. Two of the sticks are Kingston and two are Crucials which were the wrong types due to an error by them and didn't have the Apple-style sinks on em. The Kingstons have run reliably for over a week with me stressing them almost every night and I have encountered a lone ECC error which was corrected. I think in cooler environments you may be OK with regular FB-DIMMS but in a hotter environment you may have issues, I keep it pretty cool where the MP lives.

    The Nvidia would be cooler, 110 watts vs. 132 watts. If hot air is coming out, it means the fan is working, and the vents are not obstructed, so it should be OK.

  • Forced Sleep, Thermal runaways, and how hot is your cpu?

    I've been dealing with a problem for a while on my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7. Under certain conditions is goes to sleep on it's own, usually when under heavy load, but also sometimes after waking up. The problem has gotten progressively worse.
    After reading thorough this excellent forum I discover to look for Thermal runaways. Sure enough, the system log confirms that is my problem.
    Based on advice I have gleened from here, I have so far tried:
    1) Updating the system from the 10.4.3 combo download from the apple site.
    2) Resetting the SMU.
    3) Replace both of the .plist files for Energy Saver.
    4) Run Apple Hardware test. (it showed nothing)
    So far the only thing that has worked has been to change the pocessor setting in Energy Saver to "reduced".
    While going through this process I downloaded a nifty little program called Temperature Monitor, and I have been running it constantly to keep a decent log.
    Yesterday I took my Mac to the Genius bar at my local Apple store. We were unable to replicate the problem in the 15 minutes we had it running, althought it showed about the same temp range as when I've had it running at home for hours. If running (even sleeping) for a couple of hours I can reproduce the problem easily.
    Here lies my delimma. My processors seem to be running hot, and CPU B runs about 15 degress hotter than CPU A.
    Here's some data (averages are estimated based on weeks of data):
    CPU A min temp 90.4 max temp 187.0 average 168
    CPU B min temp 95.5 max temp 209.7 average 175
    All other temeratures seem to be in line with downloaded data I got from another freeware called ThermographX. The ThermographX data seems to indicate that my processor temps should be in the 90F - 137F range. Mine are clearly in the 155F-190F range, with CPU B always 10-25 degrees hotter than CPU A.
    So does anyone know what temp the CPUs should be running at?
    One last thing. The data from my system log (see below) appears to give some temps (T_cur=115 >= (T_max:88 + sleepOffset:20). The question is, what do these numbers mean?

    My case was very similar to yours. I came to a solution so simple that it's even funny.
    I experienced high temperatures on my Dual Powermac G5 2.5 (late 2004), around 90ºC even when doing simple tasks such as browsing the web. When doing cpu-intensive tasks (such as encoding a video with iDVD) the temperature went up to 105ºC or more, causing the machine to go into sleep mode and writing that "thermal runaway" entry in the logs.
    I ran the Apple hardware test (which I recommend you to run if you haven't) and it gave me the following error code:
    2STH/1/2: CPU A AD7417 AD1
    According to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86492 there seemed to be a problem with my CPU A thermal sensor.
    Since the mere thought of taking my powermac for repair is completely unbearable to me, I bought a new SATA hard disk drive with the purpose of installing OS X from scratch, therefore discarding any software related problems.
    When I opened the G5 case I noticed large amounts of dust in front of the CPUs air inflow grid. And that was the cause of my problems. I cleaned the inside of my powermac with a vacuum cleaner, paying special attention to ventilation grids and fans.
    I ran the hardware test again and it gave me no errors. Additionally, now my powermac runs at lower temperatures (around 55-60ºC when not doing cpu-intensive tasks) and I haven't had any more thermal runaways.
    My solution was very simple and perhaps obvious, but it worked. I hope it helps.

    Today, I right clicked on a file on my desktop. It didn't respond at first, so I right-clicked again and then the beach ball appeared and it stayed that way. I think it was Finder stalling out. I tried switching and launching other programs, tried logging out, and finally tried CMD-option-Esc. All of them didn't work. Finally I was forced to hold down the power button to force shut down the system. Booted it back up and everything was back to normal again.
    This is the first time this has ever happened since I recieved my Mini around early April. So I'm just doing a reality check with this post. This is my first Mac.
    How frequently does your Mac act up to the point where you are forced to force shut down or pull the plug (the absolute last resort)?

    Even then, Peter's advice may be a little bit over the top. There a loads of Macs out there that rarely get their permissions fixed, probably don't have cron tasks run at all, that don't have copies of any of the general purpose utilities such as OnyX or Cocktail, and where the users don't have crashes or kernel panics either.
    The real skill in maintaining OS X is to resist doing things that you don't need to do, because it largely looks after itself. From time to time, you might notice a problem, the symptoms of which will generally help determine what needs to be done in order to rectify it.
    But if a user is determined to do anything routinely, it should not be to alter the general use of the system (ie, not to suddenly decide to leave it on 24/7 not sleeping so the cron tasks can run), but to use MacJanitor maybe once a month to do the daily, weekly and monthly tasks all in one go, and to fix permissions after an install that has asked for an admin password. The user might also be wise to keep a copy of OnyX, Cocktail or YASU (YASU being the best for the novice user because it is very difficult to misuse) and to use it from time to time as and when the system exhibits poor overall performance or when it has trouble opening or running applications.
    Which is not to really contradict Peter's advice, but to say that much that is said on the subject of maintaining Macs and MacOS in good working order is overstated. A low-key/light demand attitude to this aspect of caring for systems is typically rather better - not least because it's typically not a cron task or a permission fault that causes a problem - more commonly hacks, hardware/peripherals or software.

    I think if it is taking you 6 to 7 hours then something is wrong here. Either the battery is flawed, the cable or dock is flawed, or something is wrong with the outlet. It should not take that long.

    Thanks Flam3h, it most definitely is the printer spooler.  The problem is that if you set it to manual, your printer will not work.  When you go to print something, Windows tells you that you must first install a printer.  This is the only service I've found where the manual setting will not work.  You either have to set it as automatic or go into services and start it each time you want to print.  I'm just wanting to know if anyone else has this problem and knows of a work around to allow the manual setting to work.
    I don't know if I'm ready to try service pack 2 yet.  If I do, I will definitely make a ghost first

    Oracle errors get reported with error code & message; like ORA-01555 Snapshot Too Old; which is not present in your post.
    You indicated that Connection Pooling is used.
    Is there some (artificial) limit within the application that falls off the cliff at 3000 sessions?
    Oracle does not know or care about the "flavor" of client connection. It treats jdbc the same as OCI or ODBC connections.
    Is OS limited to fixed number of open file handles?

    You definitely bring up good point. Here my concerns:
    1) Even if I don't cache my JNDI lookups, I expect subsequent local lookups
    of an already-found object to not fail!
    2) If indeed JNDI lookup in 6.1/7.0 is now more expensive than it was in
    5.1, shouldn't the local caching be done by a WL proxy to Context? Why give
    the onus to the developer?

    I have a servlet that simply creates a simple POJO puts in the cache and then fires off a command that does additional formatting to the POJO.
    With JDBC cachestore I have no problem. It works fine.
    With JPA I get the bellow exception under heavy load only. I.e: If I send one-two requests. Everything works fine and my data is present in the database after 30 second write-behind. Once I bump up to 200 users I get the exception.
    I figure I'm running out of memory on the cache because of JPA enitites take more resources?

    Done look at the original thread logs are below... I'm thinking that the key is no longer in the cache at the point the processor fires?
    I can also assure you that there is only to instance of coherence running
    1- The actual cache server node
    2- The client, set to localstorage = false
    I ensure the cache server starts and then I start the client.

    Source and destination ports are correctly set. Wireshark shows the correct HTML inside the packets that are returned to 0.0.0.0. The web server log also looks normal; the correct IP address is displayed and logged as a successful request.
    When dropping incomming traffic on port 80 on eth0 everything works as expected (when requesting the server on eth1, which otherwise fails).
    I'm running on "Linux srv 3.0-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 19 12:14:48 UTC 2011 i686" which is the latest kernel in the repos. When booting the fallback image this problem does not exist, all packets are correctly addressed no matter how much load I put on the server.
    Does anyone else have this problem?

    Did a full reinstall of Arch on another machine and the problem still persist. Tried with Apache and Nginx, same behaviour as with Lighttpd. Could anyone else using an arch box under heavy load see if there's activity from 0.0.0.0?
