How Hot is Too Hot 20" iMac (Mid 07)

I have a new 20" iMac 2.4 GHz that came with the Apple installed 1 GB of RAM. I realize it is normal for the top edge to be warm. I wanted to know how warm so I installed the Temperature Monitor v4.2 and it currently reads 123.8 F. Is this normal or hot? How hot is too hot and what will happen if I install another memory module?
Is there a better utility or something from Apple to track temperature?

Ps: How do I add an icon showing one of the new iMac?

185 F is too hot, but unless you've got your iMac sitting in direct sunlight or are operating it at the extreme upper end of the ambient temperature operating range at 95 F, it would be highly unlikely to reach that temperature since the fans do an excellent job of cooling.
The whole point of Apple's switching to Intel processors was to provide the same power as the Power PC processors, but at much lower temperatures due to consumers not using air conditioning to such a wide extent as do businesses.
Installing another memory module will not make much impact on most internal temperatures, except it will probably tend to lower the hard drive temperature since with more memory there won't be as much swapping of data back and forth between memory and hard drive.
Computers have always worked faster in a cooler environment rather than in a hotter environment, so if your environment is hot and you want to give your Mac some help, turn on the air.
As to the topic, it is not marked as solved, but is marked as answered.

  • Am I being a spaz? How hot is too hot?

I was doing some google searches, and I've just come up with statistics, not whether or not the temperatures were too hot, or if it was normal.
From what I've read, the iMac can idle safely at ~50C, [122F], and when gaming, it can go into the upper 80C's [176F].
I've been using smcFanControl with like, 5 different settings, and my normal response would be, turn up the fans if it gets
above 110F [43C]  and if it gets to 120F [49C] or above, I switch the fans to max until it lowers to around 100F [37C].
It may just be me, but am I being overly cautious about temperatures? I'd rather the fans need to be replaced than the hardware,
and also, I've read that it will definitely just shut itself off if it gets "too hot", but about how hot is 'too hot', and will this work
    if I'm booted in Windows?
Just for reference, the ambient air should be somewhere in between 70-80F [20-27C].
    Mid 2010 iMac, 21.5"

Hmm. Alright, I may end up uninstalling it and resetting the SMC/PRAM later, and just use it normally. I usually don't mind the fans being a bit noisier, if it'll keep the system cool, since I have an external tower speaker I use, which I love when gaming...

  • Hdx 18t GPU: How hot is too hot?

    Hello,
I have a HDX 18t i bought off a friend.  I noticed that while playing games (WoW, starcraft 2), the GPU gets pretty hot... i have maxed out at 79 degrees C which is crazy hot.  I have heard however, that laptop GPUs tend to run hotter, wanted to get an idea of what is considered really hot.  I called HP support, and they said they can run up to 90 degrees C without issue, so this is ok.  Can a gpu run this hot and still be ok? My desktop GPU rarely runs above 60 degrees C.
Note that the laptop doesnt restart while playing (yet) but i rarely play continously for an hour.  Also, I have one of those zalaman NC2000 laptop coolers, but doesnt really seem to help the hot GPU issue.

  • How Hot Is Too Hot For Late 2008 Macbook Unibody?

I'm still in the process of adjusting to life in the world of Macs and I was wondering just how hot is too hot for the CPU to be running at with the Unibody 13 inch Macbook?

The sensors are set to put the computer in thermal shutdown at 212F to prevent catastrophic damage.

  • My macbook pro 13" 2010 runs hot . How hot is too hot?

How hot should my macbook pro run? How can I tell? It's quite warm on my legs and the fan turns on soon.

They do run quit hot, however should not be so hot that it would burn you.  If you feel your computer is running to hot, take it into your local apple store.  They can check the running temperture of your computer, and will tell you if it is outside of the norm.

  • How can I see how hot I'm running?

Is there a small app or something I can install to see what temperature my macbook is running at? Assuming there is what temperatures are good and whats to hot?
    Thanks.

Yes, you can use CoreDuo Temp or Temperature Monitor, although I can't use Temperature Monitor without CoreDuo Temp running first as it says it can't find any sensors.
As for good and bad temperatures, there are a couple threads around on that, but it seems to be tied more to the lap burn and mooing aspects. Everyone's machine is going to be different as is everyone's tolerance for something warm on their lap should they choose to rest their MacBook there (there are also several threads on just that topic alone). Likewise, the general thought on the mooing seems to be tied to the fans and their cycling on and off, and again, here we see some difference in MacBook behavior which could be, in part, tied to the environment where they are running.
Here are some threads here with some good information:

And here is Apple's tech note on their notebook operating temperatures.
Personally, I have had my MacBook for about a week and a half now, and I haven't had any issues with it - heat or otherwise!

  • How Hot is 2 Hot... Apple Clues In

Lots of people are asking how hot is too hot. Here's a quote to be found on this site that can be of some practical use:
    Hot Tip
If you use your iPod or notebook in temperatures higher than its specified operating range, 95°F (or 35°C), you may permanently damage your battery’s capacity. I.e., your battery won’t power your device as long on any given charge. You may damage it even more if you charge the device in these temperatures. Even storing a battery in a hot environment can damage it irreversibly.
I found it when looking up how to maintain the MBP's (or any other) Li-ion Battery. If I understand correctly, a lot of you show tmperatures that are significantly higher around that area, right? Somewhere in the mid 40's C around the memory is what I've seen.
Maybe this could be a small step in determining the how hot is too hot question that seems to bubble up here quite often.

i can't see why this would make a difference? for example, i would assume the ambient temp around the battery would exceed 35C when placed on a desk (as recommended) and the bottom of MBP cooking at 40C+ temperatures. from what's written, it would seem less then ideal.

CoreTemp should work quite well on that laptop.

  • X201i how hot is normal?

    How hot is normal?
At times the bottom of my laptop (on the left side)  gets too hot to be able to touch it for any length of time -so can't have it on my lap. During that period the air blown out from the vent is  very hot too.
Anyone experiencing a similar problem? I am not sure if I should call tech support?
I am running WIndows 7, 64 bits. The CPU is Intel Core i3.

download tpfancontrol and see what temperature your laptop gets to.

  • How Hot?

How hot does your computer usually get?
I have the fans running at 5100 RPM most the time and idle is 37 Degrees C and 40-42 Degrees C while on firefox ect...

When you say "have the fans running at 5100 RPM" does that mean you are using third-party fan control software? If so you should remove it as it's completely unnecessary and potentially hazardous to your computer's health.
The fans are under firmware and software control already. They normally idle at 2000 RPM and may increase up to a maximum of 6000 RPM depending upon how hot the CPU, GPU, Northbridge, and SouthBridge chips get. Normal operating temperature can range from 35ºC to 85ºC depending upon load. Hotter temperatures are possible under very heavy CPU and GPU loads. Thermal shutdown will occur if the processor temperature hits 125ºC.
Running third-party fan software could be hazardous as it can mask a serious overheating problem if one were to occur, and they can cause the fan life to deteriorate faster.
The temperatures you've stated seem low for what you are doing, and that indicates you are running the fans too fast.

  • How hot does your Helix get under heavy load?

I've had my Helix for a few days now and have finally got around to installing some software on it.  I have the i7 with 256gb SSD and 8GB RAM.. so far I've been very impressed with how 'snappy' it all runs and besides a few annoyances with the touchscreen/pen not working correctly 100% of the time am very happy with the system.
Anyways, I wanted to see how the Helix would run when pushed really hard so I had Solidworks running (3d modeling/CAD software) and Netflix going on on an external monitor.  The back of the Tablet became super hot--hot enough that you would definitely not want to touch it (let alone try to hold it) or have it on your lap.  I installed TP fan control and it read that the CPU got up to 86 degrees Celsius.  Granted this is not representative of normal operating conditions, but I'm concerned about how hot it got.  Has anyone else noticed their Helix's running really hot under heavy load? Is this normal?

I'm in the same boat as you on this. It can get very bad sometimes. Under light use, it never get's as cool as I feel it should. I go through the currently running applications and try to run as minimally as possible, but it still creates a fair amount of heat. My battery life is around 6 hours with both batteries too. I definitely don't get the 8-9 hours it's supposed to be getting.
I think the 10 hrs thing was for the i5 model. It's still five times longer than my X201t with 4cell battery, so I'm happy with this. Shorter battery time is something you have to live with if you are going to use an i7 machine on the go.
I also heard that actually the RTM version of the Helix IS the revised version from the initial batch(or the previewers' batch)... I heard the first machines were truely HOT.
[Added] Also, I think long term heat damage will be of less concern in case of the Helix. The business already has many years of slate tablets with standard CPUs that did have problems with heat(namely, Asus EP121 which had its LCD turn yellow because of heat, and Samsung Slate 7 which had serious throttling issues in its early days). If Lenovo HAS intelligence to learn from the history, which I want to believe they do, they should probably would have dealt with that, considering this machine may actually be a second revision. And even if I don't believe Lenovo, I still trust in Yamato Lab.

I use one of these... http://www.awd-it.co.uk/cooler-master-notepal-u3-cooling-pad-for-notebooks-black.html
My laptop used to shutdown due to over heating - you could fry an egg on the bottom of it.
Since I got the cooling pad, my laptop is almost icy cold.  Really.
For the price, they are very cheap.  When I opened the box I was a little disappointed because I thought it was made of thin cheap metal, but it does stand up to the use.
haha cool, exactly one of those that I bought today also
I think it's working pretty nice, though where is the most optimal place to place your fans ?
the vents on the back or the actual place that gets warm? (which have no vents)

  • How do I get my iPhoto library from a ppc g5 to an intel iMac mid 2011

How do I get my Iphoto library from a ppc g5 to an intel imac mid 2011?

I recommend tha tyou do not use migration assistant - it has a poor record of moving the iPhoto library successfully
Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
