How hot is too hot for CPU's?

Melting through the bottom of the case like a runaway nuclear reactor is obviously bad...
BUT!  What temperature ranges should be be looking at for standard air cooling with a quality heatsink and fan?  I am running the intel provided retail heatsink and fan atm as the much more expensive unit I bought (the SP-94) wouldnt fit in my case at all.
So!  Currently at idle my CPU temp is 36c, but it is also a little cold in my house.  I have seen temps as high as 55c under load.  Anything I should be concerned about as I am overclocking a bit?  I am running 220x16 so running my 3.2 at 3.52ghz.
Thanks!

Increasing the FSB provides for better system throughput, but just increasing the multiplier of the cpu does not, therefore, you might want to try decreasing the multiplier when you increase FSB.
The formula is pretty easy. Take the max stable CPU Mhz setting you have, 3600(=225x16), and then divide 3600 by the new FSB value you want to try. The result will be what you should set the CPU multiplier to. Doing this repeatedly will eventually give you the max stable FSB value you can run @ your stock voltages, and then you can try to tweak up your multiplier again. You might have to up both memory and CPU voltages to get past the 3600Mhz total, but only do this one step at a time. You're looking for the MINIMUM voltage increase to achieve stability.
HOWEVER, I don't recommend radical OC'ing to anyone who has only stock cooling, or who has a big heatsink on the CPU only. The whole system needs to be cooled as evenly as possible: CPU, RAM, chipset, motherboard, video card, and should be done BEFORE OC'ing. Otherwise, unless you have deep pockets, you might go broke buying a whole buttload of replacement parts.

  • How big is too big for swf?

I have a swf file that has audio associated with about 15 slides. We were having some problems with it downloading and the people that host our LMS (Moodle) said that some of the problems may be related to our CP4 settings. I have the preloader set to 25% and the file is about 8.6 MB. They said to us:
Usually when hand-coding a SWF I require 100% of the SWF to be loaded before the SWF begins to play.
8.6mb is large for a SWF provided via progressive download. The optimum is no more than 5mb for users with a broadband connection. That may be part of the issue.
Is 8.6 MB really too big for a swf? What is the maximum size this should be? If it is too large what else can I do to shrink the audio as I'm sure that's a great deal of what is making the file too large?
    Thanks very much,
    Whitney

    Hey Whitlowe,
I had a very similar situation.  I received a 15 MB file from a "co-worker." The course was basically a converted PowerPoint into a Captivate course.  The course had 53 pages and had heavy audio.
When I initially tried to publish it to my LMS the course took about ten minutes to load.  I’m not sure if you use another authoring tool but I used another authoring tool called "Tool Book" a SumTotal product.  I had to divide the captivate course into 8 SWF files.  I then used Toolbook as a wrapper.  The Tool Book file was 8 pages.  Because Tool Book can read each page as a different SCO, the SWF files loaded one at a time.
For future courses, I am looking at getting a streaming server.  I can house my audio on the server.  The course would launch as a shell but would link to a streaming server for the audio/video.  Not only will this improve load time but decrease my space on the LMS.  I am looking into this option and not positive what the results will be, but I thought I would throw it out there.
That is the only solution I currently know of. I’m carious of any other solutions as well.
    Good luck.

  • How big is too big for .properties file for a ResourceBundle?

The subject says it all. We are using ResourceBundles to manage the dictionary of English/French literals for our web enabling project. Our .properties file is currently 675 key/value pairs. How big can .properties files grow before they are too big?
    Thanks,
Don Booker - Programming Team Leader
    Common Departmental Financial System

The resource gets loaded into memory, so there's a memory cost that increases with the number of properties. (There's also a time cost when it loads, but that's only once.) And finding one of the properties requires a search, so there's a processing cost involved. But it's based on a Hashtable, so it isn't a major cost even if the number of properties gets very large.
So there's your constraints. The question is, though, what is your alternative when the resource does get too big? A database? That reduces the memory cost but increases the processing cost. I would guess you could let your properties file grow a lot before you were forced to go to a database, but actual testing would help.

  • How Large is Too Large for a Movie These Days?

Hi, we're developing our portfolio site which will have a LOT
of images that must be very high quality. So to keep quality up I
know we have to sacrifice file size (or vice-versa).
We've divided each of the sections of images into separate
movies so there is usually less than 8 images per movie. That way
someone would only need to wait if they clicked to see a specific
    movie.
    - My question is: What is considered 'large' for a movie file
    in these days of broadband?
We are not planning on having preloaders for the individual
movies, and would like them to come up pretty quickly (so no
sluggishness or blank screens). I'm also looking into how to have
the movies loading in the background so that there would be less or
no delay once they are called up.
As an example, one of our larger sized movie tests showed a
size of around 350k for med-high quality, and about 750k for really
good quality. We prefer to have the quality of the latter, but
don't want people to get frustrated waiting.
On our local med-fast broadband (3.0Mb/Sec DSL) the large
movie loads up pretty much instantly and looks great. But we don't
    want to alienate anyone.
    THANKS!

I think you simply have to judge your audience - are they
likely to have ultra fast broadband or ten year old dial up
    connections ?
My rule of thumb is to work for the lowest connection likely.
In the UK most medium to large commercial organistaions (my
market) have at least a 4mb connection so I optimise everything for
that. (Always bearing in mind that it's shared by hundreds or
thousands of users at any given location).

  • How large is too large for an Apple Mail folder?

My Apple Mail folder is around 3 GBs. Is there a limit to how big Apple Mail's folder can be?

Individual mailboxes are limited, but not the size of the Mail folder. In Mail 2.x, the limit for a single mailbox is 2 GB. Since each account has its own set of mailboxes, the limit for an Inbox, let's say, would be 2 GB per account.

  • How long is too long for a DVD?

I've been burning DVD's now for quite some time and have always thought that between 3 and 4 hours was normal for a DVD to burn in. Other's are telling me they can make DVD's in minutes!!! What's up...? Why are these time's so grossly out of proportion? Can I upgrade something or buy a better computer, what? Please help, all advice welcome

Just burning data to a DVD is very different from creating a video DVD with an application such as iDVD. Just burning data to a DVD can indeed take only a few minutes, depending of course on how much data is being burned. If you're creating a video DVD, though, then the application has to first compress the video to MPEG-2, and that can take hours.
Without knowing what you're doing, we can't say whether your experience is normal or not.

  • How big is too big for Illustrator CS4

I have been working with Illustrator for a little while now, and have been asked to create a piece of artwork 10,000 pixels wide, the height would be about 8,500 high.
My understanding is that they want to use the on a very large sign on the lawn of their sales center.
Could someone tell me what the size limit is for illustrator CS4?
    Thank you,
    Del

    Thanks for all the info.
I have attached a pdf with some of the sign composition.  Everything except the tree object is illustrator vector, using quite a few layers. Missing from the pdf are two lines of text for the name and location of the properties, there is also a vector log that is missing.
The tree is an 8.25mb jpg. I placed it on a separate layer in the illustrator sign doc. I’m making wooded areas (forest) around much of the perimeter using this tree. I also speckle  much of the properties with trees.
I am using hundreds of these trees to do this, many are resized very small for single trees on the property lots and many are stretched and reshaped to make forests, with small trees add to that.
Everything is ok until I get about 2/3s of it done and then I can’t save anymore and the file can’t be opened after that.
I know I’m using a tremendous amount of space with these trees, (gig’s worth now that I think about it) but how small can I make the tree image size and it still look high quality?
There must be a better, easyer way of getting the results I need.
I’m not familiar with Document Raster Effects Settings, but I’ll be using physical size from now on.
    Thanks,
    Del

  • How long is too long for the IPod to download from ITunes??

I just swapped my busted IPod for a new one and the installation process seemed to be going fine. I've heard that when you use your camera in cold weather that when you bring it inside you should leave it in a sealed bag until it's at room temperature.  I have no problem doing that.  But how cold can my T5 tolerate as I'm walking outside taking photos?

You could probably find it on the Canon Web site. I think it's part of the published specs.

  • How Long is Too Long for TM Backup after 10.5.7 upgrade?

I only upgraded to Leopard a little over a month ago from Tiger, and so am fairly new to Time Machine. After reading this forum for advice, I erased the external HD (SimpleTech 150 GB with a Firewire connection) and did a GUID partition, and Time Machine worked with no problems.
Then a few days ago I ran the 10.5.7 upgrade, and so far Time Machine has not completed a backup. This is what happens: TM says it is "Preparing Backup"....for hours. The first time I let it run for about ten hours, and thought a restart might work. That second time I let it run for about twenty hours, and read that I should do a verify disk from disk utility on the external HD. It passed, but also stopped the backup. Now it has been another twenty-plus hours, and it is still preparing.
I have, I believe, done everything suggested on this forum. I have no anti-virus software to turn off. I eliminated Spotlight from the HD. I have the Time Machine Buddy, but another curious thing is that when TM is on, Dashboard stops responding, so I can't access the info on Buddy without stopping TM.
I know that the upgrade was large, and a few people with questions have been advised to just let TM run, but my question is at what point does it become pointless to do so? I am approaching twenty-four hours of "preparing" now, so should I just continue to let it, or is there something else to do I haven't yet tried?
Any advice given here would be extremely appreciated!

I'm having very similar problems. Time Machine was working properly for 6 weeks and then suddenly one day it said "Preparing..." for a very long time (over a day). When this happened, I noticed that Sophos was also trying to update and would take longer than normal, so I uninstalled Sophos thinking Sophos was the problem, but the next time I tried a TM backup it behaved the same way. Here's the log from the latest attempt:

  • How big is too big for database?

We're designing a database that will have hundreds of tables and millions of rows.  Is this a bad thing?  I.e. when does the size of a database become problematic?  If the database grows to many TB for example (even with periodic shrinking),
is that still manageable?  Seems like a single MDF file of that size (or even much smaller than that) would be a problem.  thanks

There is no problem with the SIZE of the database, it's when the architecture is poor and the queries are terrible. Not having proper indexing, maintenance, etc.
For example, don't use a single file. Use multiple files in multiple filegroups with multiple disks or mount points.
Having a proper database schema and design is first. Building the physical database structures on top of the hardware properly is the second step. Having properly designed queries, indexes, etc, is last.
Maintenance, refactor, rinse, repeat. Workload patterns will eventually change, keep up with them.
