If you want to unlock the device, only the carrier can do that.
Did you possibly have the device replaced under warranty? If so, then Apple would have replaced it with an identical device. Regardless... you'll need to contact Apple directly as this is a user to user forum.

If it's in recovery mode, anything on the phone is already gone. Restore the phone using iTunes, then restore it from your last backup. If you've been backing up on a regular basis as intended, you won't lose anything except what's changed since the last backup.

Strangely, emails from my distant past are still there. Time Machine is no help; the messages may be on my backup disc but they're behind an invisible icon. Any ideas as to how I can get them back?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

Your i-device was not designed to be a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself backed up. Sync transfer is one way, computer to device, matching the device content to the content on the computer (except purchased content as mentioned below). For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software unless you have an older model iPod. I reformatted my iMac hard drive with Lion. I restored from the downloaded version of Lion and therefore do not have iMovie on my system. I had upgraded to iMovie 9 but now it's not available in the App Store nor from iTunes. Does anyone know how I might get a copy of iMovie 9?

Look at this knowledge base article on iOS backups to iTunes, note where the backups are kept for your type of computer, Windows or Mac, go to that Library location and see if there are any other files with the same name as the current backup but with a different extension and date/time stamp. If so you can edit the extension of the current backup and then change the extension of the previous backup so it looks like what was on the current and the do a restore. iTunes will think the older backup is now new and use it to restore.
If there are no such files then you over-wrote the backup and it is gone.

If the iPhoto application is no longer on your hard drive (do a search to be sure it didn't just get moved to an unexpected place), there's no way to get it back without either backups or a copy of iPhoto. Your original disks that shipped with the machine would have iPhoto. If you have lost those disks and don't have backups, you'll simply have to buy a copy of iLife. Or call Apple with your machine's serial number in-hand and request replacement disks, which they will send you for a small fee.

Copy the iTunes folder from the disk to the Mac, and the iPhone backup to the right place on the Mac (Google for "iphone backup location"). Then when you restore you can reload the last backup.

You cannot.
You buy one and only one download of movies. it is your responsibility to backup your purchases.
