How I can move my GB songs to a CD so I can free up hard drive space?

Whenever I attempt to move a GB song onto a CD (to free up hard drive space) and delete the song from the GB folder, I'm not able to open up the song. Any advice?
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thank you for your advice.
Ultimately you are correct about the CD-R not being reusable once the file is burned.
Presently I've alleviated that by not burning the CD-R. However, the downside is that I will not be able to remove the CD-R from the drive until I either burn the songs to the CD-R, or move the songs back onto the hard drive.
Perhaps a CD-RW may allow one to move files back and forth in the same manner that floppy disks do (though a GarageBand file obviously would be much too large to store on a floppy). This may be a temporary "poor person's" solution to free up hard drive space until one can afford a zip drive or a larger Mac.
Thank you again for your tip.
Cheers,
John

How do I free up hard drive space on my Macbook so I can

You guess is wrong, Time Machine can back up with FileVault turned on.
You are seriously short on free space. You need to delete or move enough files to increase your free space by at least 10 GB. Your movie, video and music files would make good candidates for gaining the most free spoace quickly.
Once you get the free space you should repair the disk by booting from the Install DVD and starting Disk Utility. I am not talking about repair permissions here either.
The reason to repair your disk is that running the free space so low has greatly increased the chances for disk corruption. If you don't do the corruption will only get worst cause weird problems for you until the system stops.

  • How do I move iPhoto pics to external HD to free up hard drive space, then how to back up external HD

I currently have 2 iPhoto Libraries on my 2010 MacBook Pro.  Photo count is in tens of thousands, and hard drive needs them to go away so it can work faster.  Nervous about moving photos to external HD.  I currently back up entire computer to 1 external HD via Time Machine.  Just purchased another bigger external HD for purpose of moving iPhoto libraries to it.
However, Genius Bar told me to drag and drop folders to folders I create on new HD and NOT move iPhoto Library file itself because those were only "copies" of the images.  If I want to keep the real images, I should move folder by folder and group by year.
I'm just totally confused.  I still want to be able to use iPhoto to organize and edit my photos.  I THINK I can do that by moving the entire iPhoto library folder from my Pictures folder to the external and then launching iPhoto by holding down Option key.  But, how do I back up the back up?

Genius bar is not very genius in this case.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Backing Up.
Remember a back up is a copy on another disk (at least). So, you'll need one disk to hold your Library and another to back that up to. You can use Time Machine if you want to. Chronosync or SuperDuper are also excellent alternatives.

  • How can I increase hard drive space on my mac book pro

I have only about 30 gb left on my hard drive. I have a mac book pro I bought in 2013. I've deleted or transferred to an external hard drive
as much material as possible. How can I find out what is taking up all the room?? My dropbox always says it can't sync because I don't have
enough room on my hard drive. Why isn't 30gb enough? Please tell me how I can find out which files are taking up so much room and how I can

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
      5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      6. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • How do I move users, including my user library (which is invisible) to a different hard drive?,

I have two 750 GB hard drives in my new mac mini.  Lion is installed on hard drive A and I want to move users to hard drive B.  I have dragged the user files from HD A to HD B and have re-mapped the users to the folders.  Turns out, in Lion the users libraries are hidden and won't copy.  I can unhide them (using Finder, go to folder, ~/Library, GO).  But it will not let me copy the library folders because it is invisible.

Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder and paste this to unhide the user library:
    sudo chflags nohidden ~/Library
Hit enter and put your password in.

  • How much can 320 gb hard drive hold? Do you recommend it for a college student?

I need to know whether to go with the 320 gb hard drive or add the 500 gb hard drive instead.

It can hold 320GB or 320,000MB.
An MP3 say is about 5-10MB, a high definition movie is say 1-3GB.
I would suggest getting the 500GB. You ALWAYS need more room. Trust me, you will fill it.

  • How do I permanently delete imported video to free up hard drive space?

I have imported 2 years worth of video and I believe this may be the reason my iPhoto is so slooooowww. I thought I have deleted the footage, but I'm wondering if I have not done it correctly. Could someone let me know how I can delete any unwanted video completely from my computer? Thanks.

As a footnote to Klaus 1's accurate comment, even deleting the iMovie project trash will not necessarily remove from your hard drive the clips that are in there. If any part of a clip is still being used in the project, the whole clip stays in, even if you have split off a part, placed it in the trash, and emptied the trash. It is part of iMovie's non-destructive editing feature. I have seen lots of posts on this forum where users empty the iMovie trash and notice that the project size hardly decreases.

  • Can't free up hard drive space on macbook pro

My harddrive showed 50GB free, I erased (then emptied trash) dozens of GBs of video files, and it still shows only 50GB free. I've restarted the computer. Still shows 50GB free. What's up with that?

Boot to the Mountain Lion Recovery disk (hold down command-r keys) and run Repair Disk from Disk Utility.

  • Can't download applications (poss due to hard drive space issue)?

    Hi there,
I'm having major hard drive issues with my MacBook Pro OS X 10.4.11 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM laptop.
I use it for video editing and also keep music on it. However for the video editing I use an external hard drive, though I've found some Final Cut Pro files on my internal hard drive before and deleted them whenever I've found them. Sometimes it's an Imovie project, sometimes a straightforward final cut project, sometimes a playout of a final cut project.
My problem is that I now have almost no hard drive space, to the point where I wasn't able to save a Word file last week due to insufficient disk space! I emptied the trash and managed to get it to save in the end.
I immediately went on to the discussions pages and it was suggested to try WhatSize, OmniDiskSweeper and Disk Inventory to identify the files that were taking up all the room. Unfortunately NONE of these applications will download onto my laptop. They're not the only ones, I tried downloading a couple of other applications for music and the like and NOTHING will download!
I went through everything that I felt I knew for certain that I could delete without being detrimental and freed up a small bit of room and tried again but still NOTHING. I then used Onyx on the suggestion of another post and freed up a few gigs (I went from 1.7gb available to 7gb available) and assumed that this would do the trick, however, it hasn't!
What happens when I try to download these (or any) applications is that when i click the "Download Now" area on the webpage it begins to move onto what should be a download progress page or a "download complete" page but instead just spends an eternity "loading", with the little loading wheel on the left of the tab just spinning around and around. I tried leaving it literally all night last night but to no avail, opened it back up again and still the circle was spinning around and around "loading". This has been the case for the several dozen attempts I've made, no matter what the website.
It seems like something of a Catch 22 if the situation is that I can't download these applications that will help me to free up Hard Drive space, because I don't have any Hard Drive space! Though I'd have thought that the 7gb I now have would be ample. Did my laptop turn to self preservation mode perhaps when the hard drive was down to the bare minimum and I wasn't even able to save word documents?
If anybody can help it'd be HUGELY appreciated...
    All the best,
    Rory

If you open a Finder window you can also sort by size by clicking the size column header. In view options you can also set it to calculate all sizes so it will also show folder sizes. Although not as handy as the cataloging applications you can at least start tracking down where the disk space is going. With video you can probably just copy half a dozen files off and immediately free up many GB.
Note that this isn't just a matter of convenience. OSX makes lots of temporary files and is doing it all the time. If it can't find space for those files it can result in a serious drive crash and that could cost you several hundred dollars in recovery expenses. A Sig indicates, you need space just for computer operation. I feel the % recommendation is a bit vague since people use drives ranging from 10 - 1000 GB in size. My computer regularly uses 6GB of hard drive space for temporary files, and I like to leave wriggle room, so I usually leave at least 15-20GB. You can check the temporary file usage by looking at VM in Activity monitor.
As BDaqua observes, having a crowded drive also slows down your computer. If it has to hunt for nooks and crannies in which to place bits and pieces of bigger files that takes time. Normally one does not have to worry so much about fragmentation of files on a Mac, but your scenario of working with large files on a really crowded drive may be defying that generalization.

The short answer is that you can't.  Purchases are tied to the AppleID used to buy them.  AppleID's cannot be merged, and the content cannot be transferred.
