I have a pdf file that is created and placed on a report server. I would like to run a batch cmd to set the security for that pdf based on a saved security policy. I will call the batch cmd file from a batch application. Can Acrobat XI handle this operation or do I need a third party tool. The pdf is created by BI Publisher (Peoplesoft).

You need to invoke your cmd manually, don't you? So, instead of opening the Terminal application, enter the command and press "Enter" you open Acrobat and click a button. It's a different manual step to start the process, but you need a manual step to start the process anyway. I do realize that you may have a bash/perl/python script that does more than just apply encryption but that's the capability that Acrobat has.
Regretfully, Acrobat JavaScript API does not provide functionality to encrypt with password. You can use JS to encrypt with certificates but [for unknown to me reason] not with passwords. Otherwise it could've written a JS script that encrypts, embed this JS in a separate PDF, open that PDF from a command line with your JS script executing on Open and have this LS script do all the work you need. Well, you can do that for certificate encryption but not for password encryption. I don't know why. And you cannot invoke an action from a JS either. Oh, well...

How do I create an AppleDouble "dot-underscore" file from the command line?

We're going through a process of migrating NetWare shares to Windows shares (without File Services for Macintosh) where I work. One concern is that the NetWare shares are shared as AFP volumes to the Macs. All the finder info and metadata for the files is thus stored natively and invisible to all the servers involved in the migration. If the Novel migrator or robocopy copy the files, resource forks and metadata are lost.
The procedure I've provided the migration team involves making a UFS disk image, identifying files on the NetWare share that have Mac resource forks or metadata, copying the files from NetWare to the image one-by-one (whereby the OS creates the AppleDouble dot-underscore files), and then copying the dot-underscore files back to the NetWare share so that when either migration tool is used, the files correctly appear on the Windows shares in AppleDouble form with forks and metadata intact. This works reliably enough, but it involves a HUGE amount of network activity, and there's issues with making sure that the permissions are correct in the process.
Is there a way to directly produce the AppleDouble dot-underscore file from a file on an AFP share. Things like SplitForks, RezWhack, etc. don't work on shares. I cannot find any command-line utility, AppleScript extension, Automator action, etc. to do it.

For various reasons, we still need to use the Windows-based migration tools to migrate the files. So what I want is something that can read the metadata and resource fork WITHOUT making a copy of the file to produce the dot-underscore file. The solution I
currently have for them works like tar (without the extra step of storing things in the archive or requirement of using OS X tar to unpack it).

This is not set in Thunderbird. Thunderbird uses your default operating system browser.
Go into Safari and tell it that it is not the default and then go into Firefox and set it as the default.

We are currently in the process of upgrading our company to IE8. As MS JVM is incompatible we need to remove it.
However, once we have done this JRE 1.5.0_07 is not the default version of Java any more for IE8.
My question is - Is there a command line switch to set set JRE 1.5.0_07 as default Java from the cmd line in Windows. ie the setting in Java Control panel where you would tick Internet Explorer?

This is to confirm a similar issue. Here is the scenario:
We are currently using IE 6 and looking forward to upgrade to IE 8. Our current Java version is: J2RE 1.5.0_16.
When updating from IE 6 to IE 8 with J2RE 1.5.0_16 on a test workstation, we get the following error from the Java testing website (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml): "load: class testvm2/Main.class not found."
Workaround :
-> Change Java JRE Network Settings in Control Panel to "User proxy server : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:xx"
We are using an autoconfig.pac file and it seems IE8 can't parse the settings to JRE to go through the proxy.
Please advise if you have a fix for the autoconfig.pac file.

Rather than set all this up each time I log on, I'd like to write a script from the command line (I use gawk) to automate this. Currently I have a gawk script that, given a directory, opens a few xterms whose working directory is the given directory, and opens "preview" applied to a certain file in that directory. However, at present I have to manually move an xterm through each workspace and run my gawk script in each workspace (applied to each directory that I'm working on).
There must be a better way...

as I'm programming in JAVA I must do all "special" operations as from the command line.
I found several solutions but they don't work for me, at least not in Mavericks.
I tried:

I got:
21:60: execution error: Finder got an error: Handler can’t handle objects of this class. (-10010)
I tried:

I got:
26:30: syntax error: Expected end of line but found command name. (-2741)
Is there any working AppleScript way to send a file to the Trash Bin?

How to create an alias from the command line

I would like to know how to create an alias (for a file, not a command) from the command line. I don't want to use the ln command, as an alias has more interesting features than soft/hard links... Is there an Apple specific tool to do this?

The only straightforward way that I am aware of for creating a "Finder" alias from the command line is using AppleScript via 'osascript'. Of course, it's not really a command line solution since the "Finder" has to be running. Anyway, something along the lines of:

Hi Jeff,
the best way to do this is to run the script using the Windows Script Host, for example like this:
cscript myscript.vbs
This will execute the script which in turn can access SAP GUI. You may however have to make sure the script attaches to the correct session.
