How i can use my time capsule as an hard driver

i cant copy any file to my time capsule
it is 2 tb v 7.6.3
my system is mac 10.8.2

Did this problem start with 7.6.3 which is one of the poorest firmware updates ever.. or was it pre-existing??
If it started with firmware update.. best resolution is downgrade again.. It offers you nothing in 99% of cases. Totally useless.
If it was issue beforehand.. do a factory reset of the TC.. this will not effect data on the drive.. and redo the whole setup.
You might find just a reboot gets it going though.. this is just buggy mountain lion.

You cannot backup network drives with Time Machine.
You can simply setup the TC in the network.. it is a shared drive.

  • HT201250 How to restore laptop from time capsule after replacing hard drive

How do I reload all my programs and files from a time capsule after changing hard drive?  Also Apple store reloaded with Snow Leopard and not Lion.  Will that be a problem?  Thank you

Plug the external drive into a computer by usb or whatever box you have available..
When you say blank, is it correctly formatted.. we recommend HFS+ which is Mac OS Extended (jorrnaled)
Make sure you use GUID type disk setup not MBR if it came from PC world.
Copy the files via finder from TC to the external drive.

  • Can I use my time capsule for a hard drive only?

I have a brand new Time Capsule.
Instead of backing up all of the time, can I just use the Time Capsule for my music and photos?

Music and Photos  would be fine.. but not itunes and iphoto.. the libraries are far more complex and if you load it onto the TC you will have no backups.. the TC is a backup device which has no method of backing itself up.

  • Trying to use my Time Capsule as a Hard Drive.. Help!!

I have recenly inherited an old Time Capsule from a family member and I've been trying to figure out for two hours how to use it as an external hard drive. I connected it and added it to my existing network as an extention. Then, I turned off its wireless capability, and hit update. After about 5 minutes all it said was that "An error occurred while updating the configuration." Ive done this process over and over. And Ive reset it to factory settings multiple times already. All I need is an easy way to increase my computers storage using this Time Capsule, even if it means using an ethernet cable.

The very best way to do this is with ethernet to the existing router. Put the TC in bridge mode manually.
Then plug it in to existing router.. we recommend LAN router to WAN on the TC but even that is not 100% necessary.
If you want to link by wireless, to a non-apple router that is bad.. recommend strongly against it. Join a wireless network is super slow.
If you have a desktop Mac you can plug it directly into the Mac by ethernet.
But we need to know how the Mac is connected to internet.
I have given some info on one layout here.

If you end up relying on an old TC. And any of the models from Gen1-3.. and increasingly Gen4 have all reached EOL.. they can die suddenly and either take your files with them or be hard to recover. Also a TC is slow cf a USB external drive even, which is more reliable. Considering a 2TB is <$100 I would be careful using an old TC simply because you got it free.

  • Can you use a time capsule's wireless hard drive capabilities without plugging it into a wireless router?

I recently used it as a bridge router from another router but then turn that function off. But now if I just have the time capsule set up on its own I can't even find it on airport utility. It seems funny as it itself is a wireless router...
    Thanks for your help

A "hard reset" will not erase the Time Capsule's hard disk. That would require a separate procedure. Your backup data will not be affected.
You can connect it to a router if you wish, but a "hard reset" is more likely to result in less confusion.

  • Is it possible to use my time capsule built in hard drive as a airport disk for my home network instead of just a back up with time machine?

I am setting up a new wireless office system for at my job. We have 5 employees and are looking for a wireless hard drive system for us to dump files on and pull files from. We plan to use dropbox for things we are currently using/modifying but would like a wireless hard drive to store our older and completed information/projects on so we can still access them if necessary without using up all of our dropbox space. I'm looking at either getting the new airport extreme and just hooking up a lard external hard drive to it or getting the new time capsule.
I am wondering if it is possible to use the built in hard drive on the time capsule as a wireless hard drive for collaborating/accessing instead of just as a time machine back up? If so then it seems to make sense to buy the TC w/ 3tb hard drive instead of buying the extreme and a larger external drive.

Yes, it is. Note that both the original and backup copies of a file shouldn’t be on the same drive, as it may fail at any time.

  • Using Time Capsule as external hard drive

Hi.  I have a Mac Book Pro, and external hard drive, and now, a Time Capsule.  Since I don't have a Mac, all photos and music (occasional backups, etc.) have been stored on the one external hard drive.  I got the Time Capsule to replace the external hard drive as primary (keeping it as secondary)–in addition to using the Time Machine.
If I'm understanding correctly, I open finder, open Shared>AirPort>Data–and then drag and drop all the files currently on the external hard drive onto this window?  Is this correct?  Will it COPY, and be accessibe, and not cause problems?
Will it mean, as I hope it means, that my MacBook and iPad will be able to open and use iTunes and iPhoto through this AirPort?  (Instead of having to plug-in the external drive.)
I'd love to use the Time Machine as well.  But can hold off, continuing to back up only occassionally, since this dual purposing may not to be advised?
    Thank you for your guidance.

Will there be a problem running Time Machine in the back ground while using the Time Capsule's internal hard drive manually?
    No.
Thus far, instead of using Time Machine in an automated mode, I've turned it on when I want to make a new back-up.  Will it be necessary to run Time Machine in manual mode only or can I use its automated feature?
Or–I may be seeing the light–will running the two in tandem allow me to save each new back-up on both devices simultaneously, keeping both drives up to date?
I would suggest that you consider changing your backup strategy. Time Machine was designed to be an automatic "run and forget" operation that performs incremental backups of your Mac's internal hard drive. It will also backup an external hard drive attached directly to your Mac. Running it manually is not very effecient and you stand the chance of not getting a very recent (they run once an hour) backup when you need it.
For Time Machine I would suggest that you continue to use your external hard drive as is and dedicate your new Time Capsule for Time Machine backups. If you still need more external storage, you can always add additional external USB hard drives to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
Even better you will also want to include a second "full-clone" method to your backup strategy. This method will make a full copy of your Mac's internal disk drive that is bootable. Why do this? In case your Mac has a fatal hard disk crash, you can use the clone backup to boot your Mac back up and continue to use it within seconds. Without the clone backup, you would first need to install a new drive, then load a fresh copy of OS X, and then, perform a restore from Time Machine. This can take a while.
To perform these clone backups, I would recommend that you get another external USB hard drive with a capacity at least twice that of your current internal drive. I use Western Digital My Passport drives for this purpose, but any similar drive should do. To create the clone backup I would suggest using either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner.
I would suggest that you create a new clone backup at least once a month or more often if your data is critical to you. Just connect a dedicated clone drive to any available USB port on your Mac and run the clone software to make the clone backup.

  • How do I use my Time Capsule with hotel wired internet

How do I use my Time Capsule as a wireless router on my hotel free internet ethernet cable?

    It may not be possible..
If they use a web access page, then there is no way you can set the TC to authenticate.. you must use the computer to authenticate and then use the computer to bridge to the TC for wireless clients to access.
Look up instructions on using ICS (internet connection sharing) in the Mac.
    eg for 10.6.8 http://support.apple.com/kb/PH6589
    eg http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10740
Of course if there is no login then you could just use it.. but I doubt you would be asking if it just worked.

  • HT201945 How do I use my time capsule on an existing WIFI network?

How do I use my Time Capsule on an existing WIFI network?

Use an Ethernet cable to connect from one of the LAN <--> ports on your existing wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule and then use the setup "wizard" on your Mac to configure the Time Capsule.
It will suggest that you set up the Time Capsule to create a new wireless network. If you don't want or need another wireless network, you can turn off the wireless function of the Time Capsule and use it as wired hard drive only.
Leave the Ethernet cable connected at all times. If you need to locate the Time Capsule in a different area, you can put it anywhere that the Ethernet cable will reach up to about 330 feet or 100 meters.
The only exception to using an Ethernet cable would be if your existing wireless network is provided by another Apple router. Then.....you would have the option to have the Time Capsule connect using wireless and extend the network, although using a wired connection would still be the better way to go in terms of performance.

  • How do i use my time capsule as a network to store files, etc.?

How do i use my time capsule as a network to store files, etc.?

There is no difference in setup..
Only trouble.. be warned this is quite problematic. With Mavericks even more so.
    See Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Take particular note. The TC is not a NAS or file server.. it can be pressed into use as one.. but will suffer..
    1. Slow spin up of the disk and fast spin down. Causing streaming and library issues with itunes.
    2. iphoto is easily corrupted.. don't move it to a network drive at all.
    3. no backup.. the TC cannot back itself up.. it is designed as a backup target for Time Machine. but Time Machine cannot backup network drives.. and nor did apple build in a backup.. it was never needed. After all it is a backup.. not a file store.
    4. you cannot partition it. You will have issues with TM if you do store both data and TM backups on it.
    5. You can use USB drive plugged into the TC, and experience a new definition of pain and suffering.. well slow file transfer anyway.
    Good luck.

How do I use the time capsule to share itunes music between multiple apple devices? Also, is it possible to control the music on one device using another, and how do you set this up?

unless i'm missing something, i think you got mixed up, this is easy google for walk throughs
i'm assuming this is the new 3tb tc AC or 'tower' shape, if so, its wifi will run circles around your at&t device
unplug the at&t box for a minute and plug it back in
factory reset your tc - unplug it, hold down reset and keep holding while you plug it back in - only release reset when amber light flashes in 10-20s
connect the tc to your at&t box via eth in the wan port, wait 1 minute, open airport utility look in 'other wifi devices' to setup the tc
create a new wifi network (give it a different name than your at&t one) and put the tc in bridge mode (it may do this automatically for you, but you should double check) under the 'network' tab
login to your at&t router and disable wifi on it
add new clients to the new wifi network, and point your Macs to the time machine for backups

  • Can you use the Time Capsule as a wireless drive to share music on multiple computers

Does anyone know whether you can use the time capsule almost as a nextwork drive of sorts (i.e. to share Music etc amongst a few computers)?

The TC is a dumb hard drive inside an apple extreme router.. with a couple of knobs on.
It has no media servers.. and very little flexibility.. indeed it serves files.. AFP or SMB.. and that my friend is that.
So if you want a media server in the network..then a mini is a better proposition. At some point, with sales of ssd laptops soaring and space on these devices at a premium, Apple is long overdue on a revamp of the TC.. it is really either time to drop it or to create something a lot more powerful.. the mini might be a cheap computer but it is not really a file server.. having so little internal disk space and lacking external connectors unless you are rich enough to buy thunderbolt.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule as an storage drive? Can I create folders and save files on it as with a external hard drive?

I want to know if I can use my Time Capsule as a storage hard drive instead of only use it to back up my Mac

    Bravenewcharles wrote:
Ok, so while I edit my files in my Mac that will occupy some space on its hard drive that will be backed up in the TC. Does that mean that I will occupy two hard drives on the same stuff?
Exactly.  That's kinda the definition of a backup.  When (not if) something awful happens, like your Mac being lost or stolen, or the HD failing or getting corrupted, or you accidentally change or delete some stuff, you have a backup you can recover.
What will happen when my Mac's hard drive is completely full?
Don't let it.  Delete things you don't need.  If you can't delete enough, as Neil says, get an external HD for the "overflow" that won't fit, then let Time Machine back up both your Mac and the external.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #32 for more info.
