How I cured Aperture 1.5 of Kernal Panics and put a smile on my face.
When I first installed Aperture 1.5 everything was fine - for awhile. Then after about 30 minutes I got a KP. I'd reboot and restart Aperture and in a few minutes - KP again. This would happen over and over. Now, a minute or two after I started Aperture, the system would KP - without fail.
People here kept pointing at RAM and hardware. Of course, I'd never had a problem before 1.5 and the KP was very reproducible - all I needed to do was start Aperture and wait a minute or two and KP, again. NOT RAM NOT HARDWARE!!
OK, now what to do? I finally figured out that Aperture was running a background task to build previews. A minute or two after I started Aperture, this task would start and - KP, again. This stopped me from getting to Aperture to fix any problems. But I found that if I started Aperture and as soon as possible clicked Window > Show Task List and then canceled the Preview build, Aperture would run fine. Now we're making progress!
I concluded that Aperture was trying to build a preview of a corrupted file and that was causing the KP. As soon as I started Aperture, it would resume building previews in the background where it left off at the last KP and when it got to that file, KP again.
Once I had Aperture running and the Preview building task shut down, I went through and right clicked on each project and deleted the previews on each. Then I right clicked on each project, one at a time, and selected Rebuild Previews from the menu. I went through each Project this way until I hit the one with the corrupted file. It was easy to spot because when it hit that file - KP, again. Now I knew what Project the suspect file was in. I was lucky. I hadn't done much with those 3,000 files in the offending Project, so I deleted the Project and re-imported the photos. Sure enough, during the import, Aperture refused to import one of them - but did not KP. It worked fine.
Now I can start and run Aperture without problem. Obviously, contrary to what some folks say, Aperture CAN and WILL cause a KP under the right conditions.
Maybe my "shotgun" approach was excessive but it worked. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Eric,
Not necessarily to find the corrupted file but to shut off the building of previews. The "gear" in the upper right of the projects panel can turn off preview building for a particular project and the preferences can stop preview building for new projects. I'd probably use those to help narrow it down. But now I have previews tuened off completely as I don't need them. I can always turn them back on later.
If you find a corrupted file, try opening it in Photoshop and saving it as a tiff. I found that this sometimes works and the tiff can be imported into Apertures with no problem.

What the heck is a "Kernal panic" and how can I fix this?
Lately, several of my partitions (external firewire) running OS 10.3.9 have crashed and are no longer bootable. one partition crashed upon being turned on, and said that there was 'no driver for powerbook 6, 5' and 'kernal stopping here...' I started up from a different partition, and installed the latest security update, and that repaired my kernal, but now for some reason, I am not an 'administrator,' but I am the only user of this computer. any suggestions?
someone had this happen in class, and I found out that the problem that I was experiencing was called a 'kernal panic,' and now I want to know why this happens, how to prevent this from happening, and the best software tool to check the health of my system folder. anyone got any suggestions?
I'm considering installing a clean version of OS 10.3.3, and updating to 10.3.9, but if there is a faster way to fix this, then I'm all ears! thanks!Patddfan:
From your description of what is happening it does not sound like a kernel panic. See What’s a kernel panic. In terms of what to do see: Resolving Kernel Panics
I suspect that your HDD is in serious need of maintenance. Here's what I would do:
1. Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. In the left panel select your HDD (manufacturer ID), and in the main panel select the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk Permissions.
2. Boot from your install disk. Go to the Installer menu and launch Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left panel and First Aid in main panel. Click Repair Disk. If DU reports disk needs no repair quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors, click Repair again, and again until DU reports the disk is repaired. If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior.
3. Download MacJanitor and run all the procedures, the follow regular schedule.
4. Take a look at Gulliver's article Mac OS X System Maintenance and implement procedures.
Please post back with further questions or comments.
Good luck.

After install of Mavericks, it looks like my system kernal panics and just sits there. I tried waiting over two nights. Tried reinstalling twice, booting ro the repair partition and repairs permissions/drive/verify , with no problems. Tried reseting PVRAM(or whateverit called). Recovery partition now has Mavericks as OS. Im running a iMac i3 27 inch circa 2011. Any ideas? Can still bootcamp into windows.
Thank youbhadotia wrote:Anyway's the file downloaded from dell to update the partition for Studio 1555 is corrupted (checksums don't match). My partition still doesn't boot. I'm working to fix this and will update my post when I'm done.
The file seems to create the CD/DVD/Image and USB just fine. So I used this only to create a CD image which I then wrote on a blank CD which seems to work fine. Also, I played around a bit and had some partial success in booting the partition. I've updated my original opening post with the new findings.
Whew!! what a waste of time! Never want to do all of this again .

How do i download a picture from my scanner and put it on photoshop thank you
how do i download a picture from my scanner and put it on photoshop thank you
You don't "download" anything, and you don't put anything "on Photoshop".
You save your image in your scanning application using whatever file format supported by Photoshop you want (PSD, TIFF, PNG, JPEG, etc.), and save it in whatever folder on your computer you want.
Then you use Photoshop to open your image file wherever you put it. -

How do i take a playlist from my itunes, and put it onto my ipod with the new itunes?
For music that you've purchased from Apple that are on your iPhone you should be able to copy to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. Also if you are in the US then you should be able to re-download past music purchases for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
For your own music that you've copied, then if you haven't got a backup on, for example, external drives or CDs/DVDs then you could see if any of the utilities mentioned in this old post still exist and work -

10.6.7 + Aperture 3.1.1 = Kernal Panic - Help Please!
Since upgrading to 10.6.7 I've had two kernal panics when using Aperture. The following is the KP report. Any thoughts on what's happening?
FWIW, I've also been having freezes in one of my user accounts that seem pretty random.
Thanks.

I get a lot of gray screens of death on my MacBook Pro ever since I went to OS 10.8. Never had issues with the 10.6 versions and now miss those days. The kernal panics seem to occur most frequently just waking it up from sleep, regardless of where i am or what is attached to it. I can't help but wonder if it is a problem with the video drivers under 10.8.x.
I get these daily, so here is the log that gets sent to Apple, but I'm not really sure anyone looks at them. Perhaps they would if other people experienced the problem too, but perhaps I'm in the vast minority.

If so, or even if they don't, you should take your MBP into an Apple Store or Apple Certified Service center along with a printout of that article. They will test it to see if it is that problem and replace the logic board for free up to three years from date of purchase. That time is likely close or already passed. -
I have a Kernal Panic and may need to reinstall Tiger
I have a 20" G5 with iSight and now have a Kernal Panic. I'm backing up all of my data and think that reinstalling the OS may take care of my problem. Unfortunately, I have no idea where my original OS install disk is. Any idea how I can get a new one?
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.
