How I fixed my broken iOS5 update/restore

Like many of you, my update to iOS5 caused me to lose all my content on both iPhone and iPad. I have lots of playlists and lots of app content in folders, and I've been trying various options while re-restoring my devices to get the content back. I've figured out what may be one bug in the process, and I've figured out how to work around it.
The core issue seems to be that the backed-up references to apps, and books, and playlists, and other content is not being resolved to their correct addresses during the restore, which leads to long delays and ultimately nothing being transferred. However, you can trick iTunes into updating these content references, and then many problems seem to go away and you can preserve your old app content, playlists, etc.
Here's what I did.
Assumption: you had performed a full sync and a full backup with your original system before using the iOS5 updater. Unless the content is in iTunes on your computer, and unless you have a snapshot of devices state saved on the computer, I'm not sure how to salvage a botched restore. Hopefully this backup has not been overwritten...
1) Take your device and perform a new iOS5 restore on it in iTunes. At the appropriate point, tell the program to Set Up your device from the original iOS4 backup you had made.
2) In the last part of the restore process it will begin trying to resync your content back onto your device, but you can interupt that by pressing the close box in the status message area of iTunes. That resync is not going to work, or you wouldn't be reading this post. We're going to make that resync work by following the next steps...
3) Working from right to left across the sync configuration screens in iTunes, you are now going to turn off the single content-type syncing options. So first press the single checkbox to turn off Photo syncing in the Photo tab, then turn off the single checkbox for Sync Books and the single checkbox for Sync Audiobooks in the next tab. Continue for iTunesU, Podcasts, TV, Movies, Music, Ringtones. Note: each of these area maintains pointers to the individual content items or playlists that you like, and when things get fixed we'll simply turn the top checkboxes back on and your particular content will flow back onto the device.
4) Click on the Apps tab, and look at all of your app screens on the device. You may notice some apps that have white featureless icons. These are the bad apps that will ruin your restore; you must eliminate all the white icons! You have two ways of doing this: 1) if you don't need the app right away, click on the close box on its icon to remove it [don't worry, when everything is working again you can add that app back later from the iTunes configuration screen or by redownloading it to your device], 2) if you really want the app and it's saved state, then you must click on the close box and then find the app in the app list on the left and add it back in. When the app is added back in, it will have its colored icon. [NOTE: it may be possible to restore the color by simply moving the icon to a different location in its folder or window]
5) Now go to the first Summary tab and press the Apply and/or Sync button to resync the device. This time the sync should work, and you should have your apps back with their saved state (assuming the app developers wrote the app to preserve their state)
6) After you've got that part working, go back and reanable your other device syncing options (music, tv shows, books, etc). When you reenable these, they will still point at your content or playlists you had chosen previously. Press Apply/Sync again, and you should have all your content back on your device.
I can not vouch that this solution will work for you. I was stuck with two devices that I had to wipe clean to get working at all...and I really wanted my previously-backed-up content, and I've been re-restoring and playng around in order to find something that worked. My iOS5 devices now have all my old iOS4 content, and I'm very happy I don't have to replay Plant vs Zombies from the beginning.
I hope this posting can help someone else complete the migration successfully...

very nice of you to share.....however, i am feeling pretty puny and ****** off at apple. i guess the best offense is a good defense and where in the **** did i get the impression that apple was different from any other capitalistic corporation? i guess i just dreamt that **** up.
i am pretty bitter. i have no music, can't get or fix my mail, battery problems, probably lost an internship and a possible love interest....why? technology. to quote 'animal house'....."i ****** up....i trusted you.'
nevermore saith the raven....nevermore....
i am done with all of this b.s. ....there has to be something better than this. tin cans perhaps?

  • How to fix E55 broken by software update?

Hi. I received a new Nokia E55 phone this morning (unlocked).
I charged it full, connected it with Nokia PC Suite, ran the software updater, and now my phone doesn't switch on! It completed successfully and said the phone was updated.
All I get is vibration when I switch it on, and the screen backlight flicks on and off. I phoned Nokia Care, but their definition of 'care' is a little different to mine - all they could suggest was to send it back to the retailer!
Does anyone have any better solutions? Why does the Nokia Software Updater break phones so easily?

Pull out memory card and and battery, wait 5 mins and put the battery back in - not the memory card. Try powering on with and without the charger connected.
I would guess the three finger reset applies to your device too ( actually four finger if you count the power button). - press green call button, * , 3 while powering on. Keep holding in those buttons till you're past the handshake logo screen. This will delete everything on your phonememory, but might be worth doing as a last resort before sending it in.
You should read the " pool of knowledge" post by psychomania too. Specially if you get your phone on - might need a reinstall of the fw.
And the battery is of course not discharged?

  • How I fixed the i-pod updater issue!

Seems everyone is having issues with this latest update. IT happened to both of my i-pods. One ipod totally froze and I had to open the unit and disconnect the battery to get it to reboot. The ultimate fix is to remove the Jan 06 ipod updater from your computer, your i-pod, and use the previous version. I removed both itunes and ipod software from my laptop and reinstalled using the CD that came with the unit. After reinstalling, I updated the i-tunes software only!!! Then I restored the software on the i-pod back to the original factory version. This will remove all music and files from your ipod. DO NOT UPDATE THE I-POD SOFTWARE TO THE JAN 06 VERSION! When connecting your i-pod, it will recommend that you do so. Choose cancel and reload your music. You will have to update i-tunes to the newest version first for this to work since your music is stored in "My Music" folder. I hope this helps.

The best advice was to drop it from waist high with a cover on it. I had tried everything else but after four drops this has cleared the problem. I too had suffered this after the Jan 06 update - although nowhere near the problems I had after downloading Itunes 6. What is the matter with you Apple? - please stop "improving"

  • How I fixed iTunes 5 and Updater 2005-09-23 problem

After a frustrating couple of weeks I have music back on my iPod! (BTW, I drove to an Apple store 60 miles from home and the Genius told me that if this was a major problem Apple would shortly be releasing another update to fix what this update broke. I would have to just wait for Apple to release some more new software.)
I didn't like that advice. Since I knew that everything worked just fine before the updates I decided to "go back". You can't download old releases over new ones so here is what I did.
    1. I copied the iTunes music folder to my desktop just to be sure I wouldn't lose my music.
    2. Then I deleted everything connected with iTunes and iPod (including Quick Time) off my computer.
    3. Then I used the CD that came with my iPod to re-load everything.
    4. iTunes did not populate with my music so I dragged the music folder into my library. It was still in My Music as well as on the desktop.
    5. I connected my iPod and everything worked perfectly!
    Yippee!

Correction. There are other problems with iTunes and the iPod 2005 update. First I tried to download the iPod software update, and then when I went to install it, a message came up saying that there is nothing to install. So I quit iTunes 5.0, and went to the Utilities folder.
There I chose the iPod updater. I assumed it supported the iPod that has the touch wheel and dock connector. I go to update my iPod later to find that the application I chose to update it does not support my model. This is very frustrating!!! On the website it says it supports and updates all models!!!! I am not going to the Apple store to buy a new iPod just so that I can upload my purchased music. Something has to be done about this!
    Any suggestions?
    Frustrated iPod owner
After I tried to update my iPod it erased all my music. And now it is not even connecting to the computer or responding. It is almost as if the battery died, and there is nothing I can do to bring back the music.

  • How to fix a broken catalog

So the update to LR3 was due and I thought a good time for a bit of house keeping and make changes long due. I have a Win 7 machine, folder used to be C:\Eigene Bilder. In there Raw, JPGs and Catalog files. So moved the RAWs out (I only shoot raw) to C:\RAW and moved the catalog files (LR2 and LR3beta) with it. Changing catalog source did not work. Neither did Import catalog work - well no actually both did work for quite a while but the result in both cases was that none of the photos is displayed - just a grey frame with no content whatsoever. I see that pictures are somehow imported because the number is right, the tags per photo are there and for instance the camera and lens tags are there in each picture.
Appreciate any ideas to fix that catalog again, so that I see the pictures small and large again.
    Best Regards
    Hubert

    In the meantime I have
    gotten calibration gear (Color Plus)
created and set color profiles for all monitors.
On both monitors I see no notable difference between color profile loaded or not.
I can work on one monitor now. The second monitor shows a terribly color distorted picture (not usable at all). This behaviour occurs only with LR. Any other app uses any monitor in any combination perfectly.
I mean on that machine I have used LR 2.x and the LR 3 beta without problem. No fundamental change to the machine, its configuration or operating system has occurred.  Isn't there a way to get back to this default behaviour?
BTW: I had also pinged support who suggested to remove my preference file. That did not change anything.
    Thx for any hints

  • How to sync contacts after ios5 update

i just updated my iPad2 and iPod Touch 4 to iOS5. I was going to move to iCloud but got a warning that I should first make sure one of these devices has an up to date Calendars and Contacts before I do that. I checked both devices and noticed that my Contacts are not up to date on either device. I tried syncing them in iTunes but it says Syncing has been disabled on this computer. Then it asks me if I want to enable it and I click YES. Then it tells me Syncing cannot be enabled on this computer.
When I go to System Preferences, MobileMe, I click on Sync and get a message "Sync Unavailable An unknown error occurred while performing a sync operation. Please check your account and network settings, then try again." That doesn't tell me much since my Network settings haven't changed.
Now I seem to be stuck.

To clarify, iPhone Contacts disappeared after the iOS 5.0.1 update, even though I DON'T use MobileMe or iCloud; I sync with iTunes. Follow the instructions in TS2481 but skip the MobileMe section. Instead, scroll down to "For issues syncing contacts and contact groups in Address Book" and expand the text.
    Hope this clears things up.

  • How to fix the DocSets install/update problem

I was not able to install/update my DocSets, it was giving me "Access Denied".
To fix it, I've simply deleted my "connect.apple.com (malkia)" account from Keychain,
and the next time either the developer.apple.com site, or XCode asked me for password, I made sure that I've entered "[email protected]" as a user name, instead of just "malkia" which used to (and suprisingly still works).
Now under my Keychain it's "connect.apple.com ([email protected])"

I have in the iMac MacOS X Version 10.6.8 My iTunes was version 10.6.  The software update I am trying to install include three things:
    - iTunes 10.6 (last release)
    - Remote Desktop Client Update 3.5.2
    - Security Update 1.1
After several attempts the sale occurs each time:
    1. A message during instalation stating that there was an error and the update could not be installed
    2. After restaring iTunes does not work any longer, the following message appears:
"This copy of iTunes is corrupted or is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes"
Trying to install iTunes directly from the download page og Apple produces also an error message and does not install the program
