How I got Safari 3.2.1 to stop crashing on a G4 iBook

One of my macs is an old G4 iBook that is used primarily for web surfing and little else. It is running OS X 10.4.11
The recent software update to Safari 3.2.1 was disastrous. Safari never really launched and would just crash after a few minutes. I never got as far as trying to open a web page, because it would just freeze on being launched.
I did find something in another posting that helped me to get it working again so I thought I share it here in an unambiguous posting.
I restarted the iBook in safe mode, holding down the shift key while it restarted, up to the point I could log into the iBook.
I then launch Safari which launched without crashing or freezing.
In the Safari menu I reset Safari and cleared out the cache for good measure.
I then restarted the iBook as normal.
The problems with Safari 3.2.1 stopped. I now launches and does not freeze and crash.
I hope this helps someone.

Hi,
Turn off the 'Fraudulent sites' option in Safari preferences -> Security
Hope that helps.

  • TS1702 How can I get my downloaded apps to stop crashing after I try to access them?

How can I get my downloaded apps to stop crashing after I try to access them?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • My safari is locked...there's a lock icon with an arrow around it in the top right corner, but I have no clue how it got there

My safari is locked.  There is a lock icon in the top right corner with an arrow around it, but I have no clue how it got there, and don't know if that's the reason!

    I figured both problems out!!

  • "Open In Tabs." How it got there and how to get rid of it?

I've searched the forums and tried all I can think of but cannot figure out:
    1) How an "Open in Tabs" item got in my Bookmarks Menu -
When I go to Main Menu>Bookmarks, at the very bottom is a dividing line and below it, "Open In Tabs." Yet, when I Show All Bookmarks, I cannot find it anywhere. It's not a folder, it's not a link or site, its not in the Bookmarks Bar or the Bookmarks Menu - but it's there when I drop down from Main Menu>Bookmarks.
    2) How to create my own "open in tabs" with only two bookmarks in it that I can set to open at starting up Safari.
Right now, when I click it, it tries to open everthing in my Bookmarks Menu.
Can anyone explain (how it got there and how to get rid of it) - and help me do what I'm trying to do (open two sites at startup)? Thanks.

I have to apologize, I accidently gave the link to Safari Enhancer when I mentioned Safari Extender.
Safari Enhancer and Safari Extender are two different programs with two different purposes.
Enhancer is a free standalone program to adjust some of the features in Safari that can not be adjusted using Safari's Preferences. It also alows you to make these changes without having to use the Terminal.
Extender is a shareware Safari plugin that adds its own items to the control-click contextual menus in Safari and includes menu items to work with tabs, mail, user agents, printing, and other functions.
Both are useful programs. I have and use each of them.

  • How to get Safari to ask if I want to download

Using other browsers, I can set the preferences not to immediately start a download. I can set them to ask me if I am ready to download. How do I do that with Safari?

Went there, read it, no mention at all of how to get Safari to allow me to choose whether to download or not. I am sure you haven't seen this option in Safari either, and that's why you thought Apple's guide would provide some solution for my not knowing the Safari routines. In fact, I am quite familiar with the use of Safari other than this one ommision: how to get an option to choose to download a file. You see, many download links do not show the file name. Only after Safari begins to download can I see the file name in its download list, which is difficult to use, as it shows the oldest download at the top and the active download is far down at the bottom of the list. That leaves me scrolling and looking to find out if it is either a Windows-only file (.exe) or a file I may already have. In those case, I have to cancel the download, or if I am not fast enough, I must trash a file that I didn't want in the first place. With all other browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Chrome, etc.) I can choose to allow the download to proceed or cancel it based on the small window that appears showing the file name after I click the link on the webpage. Surely Safari has that option also.
Here is a capture of what I mean (got to paste the entire URL as this forum doesn't have a link button):

  • How to close Safari and Apps entirely?

I recently got Iphone 4 and have been reading through the manual where I noticed that Safari and other programs are still running in the background if I do not close the programs entirely. I thought all programs were closed once I clicked the 'home' button and opened another program.
I am not sure exactly how to close Safari or the App programs so I would be grateful to learn about how to do that.
    Thank you.

Thank you for that link. I bought two tutorial programs for Iphone 4 and that's where I saw that it was adviced to close Safari and other Apps entirely as they were running in the background and in doing so were wearing down on the battery.
As far as I understand the link you went me Safari and other Apps are kind of closed once I have clicked the Home button so that should be OK.
However, when I opened a radio program it did not seem to be possible for me to close it down even though I was using the Home button. The music kept playing which of course many times would be great however I would like to know how to close a program when I do not want to use it any more.

  • Does anyone know how to make Safari send e-mail? Mine won't and hasn't for some time.

I have been having trouble for some time sending e-mails by Safari - no problems with Mail - Does anyone know how to make Safari send e-mails?

When we first got our new iMac we were able to send e-mail through Safari - somewhere in the last 2-3 years it stopped and we got the failure to deliver message. We then sent e-mails through Mail - it works well and we have gotten used to doing this. However, every once in a while I retry send e-mails through Safari and we still get the  failure to deliver notice. This has also happened when we try to forward some e-mails we receive (not all; most get forwarded).

  • How safe IS Safari exactly?

Okay, well I was doing the common application this weekend. It asks you for your Social Security number, and I entered it without thinking twice... However I remembered a post on Macrumours about how Phishing was common among Mac users because we used Safari, so I just got hit by an attack of paranoia. Though I still don't really understand exactly why the social Security number is so important, I do understand that it is.
Is there any chance that my number could have been stolen? D=
I don't really think that entering the number on the college application is the same as entering credit card information, but I AM really afraid of identity theft... What do you guys think? =(
Is there anything I should do? Any way I can find out if I have some sort of spyware that could have done this?

    How safe IS Safari exactly?
No browser in existence can prevent a user from voluntarily entering private information online. I believe people have an unreasonable expectation of what a browser can and cannot do in terms of protecting their privacy. Where phishing scams are concerned all a browser can do is warn the user that a particular site is questionable based on some database (Safari apparently uses Google's anti-phishing database).
And you heard wrong, very wrong. Phishing is NOT anymore common using Safari than any other browser. The people posting this tripe have personal agendas. Contrary to belief if you read something on the internet it is not necessarily or even commonly true.

  • How I got 48.11gb FREE on my MBA SSD.

Got the MBA today and i am LOVING IT.
Here's how I got 48gb free -- and my reasoning behind it...
    1. I followed everything in this article -- http://guides.macrumors.com/CompleteSteps_to_Perform_a_Clean_OS_X_Reinstall_on_Your_MacBookAir. I remote installed using my old PBG4's drive. It took about 1.5 hours. The short install time was most likely due to the fact that there was very little to install!
In the article, for Step #10, *I unchecked everything*.
For the bundled apps, my reasoning was as follows: I don't need official help documents (200 mb) b/c these are all online... iWeb is worthless... iMovie and iDVD are similarly pointless on a computer w/no DVD drive (and I've never used them once since they came out)... Garageband might be useful to musicians but that I am not... iPhoto -- while nice to have -- has largely served as a conduit to get my pictures up into Picasa. Photo editing and viewing has all gone online these days. I'll most likely need at least the Picasa Uploader in the future, but I'm going to hold off on iPhoto for as long as I can. (However, I'll miss using the trackpad to rotate and zoom in on pics using iPhoto.)
When and if I ever need these apps, I can remote install them using Disc 1.
Note: during the install, I didn't need to insert the second disc b/c I unchecked XCode, which I don't need.
    2. As the article suggest, I also manually deleted the voice files in the System folder.
    3. I then bought a license for xSlimmer and dumped all of my apps and utilities into it, freeing up about 700 more mb. I was hesitant to do this so I backed up all of my apps (a feature of the program) to an external hard drive. Obviously, the backup can't stay on the MBA -- I need the space!
Note: Despite my hesitations on app instability, 90% of what was slimmed came from Mail, iTunes, Address Book, etc, apps that still have 17 useless languages even IF you chose to ditch all languages besides English in Step #10 of the MacRumors article.
    4. I deleted Chess... If I ever need to play it, I'll play online -- w/other people as it was meant to be played!
*5. That puts me at 48.11gb!*
    6. My philosophy going forward -- and the entire reason I bought the MBA -- is to be as online and web app-dependent as possible. That's where the future lies and part of the reason I bought into the MBA philosophy (while an expensive one) is b/c I believe in this trend. I'm an advocate of an online existence and as such, I'm going to try to live in such a manner.
Future apps I'll most likely dump -- Mail, which I don't think I've even opened in a year... iCal, which I only keep b/c I sync my Google Calendars to iCal and then to my iPhone... Dictionary, which is inferior to more complete online dictionaries... Stickies, iChat, Time Machine -- again, these are all cutesy apps, but realistically, the first two are now done better online (meebo, gChat, facebook) and for the latter, I don't see the point of being a zealous backup fiend if I have nothing to backup in the first place! (Although, I've done just fine w/SuperDuper the past 2 years.)
    7. For my iTunes library, which is over 200gb, I bought a Western Digital 320gb Passport on eBay for ~ $100 and plan to listen to music w/the external connected while at home.
While on the go, I'm pretty good w/the 16gb on my iPhone.
Also, music is now so 2.0 I enjoy discovering and hearing music through services like last.fm and Pandora. (If iTunes were ever to become more of a social network and be more open, they could really have something, but I think Songbird might have already beat them to it...)
    8. Future apps I'll most likely install -- Scrivener, iWork, Camino (a second browser is always nice), VLC, xTorrent.
    9. I also plan and hope to one day upgrade the 64gb to a 128. This AnandTech article -- http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=3226 -- is the single best review I've read of the MBA. It leads me to believe by the end of the year, upgrading to a 128gb might be possible.
Sorry for the long post. I just though I'd share some thoughts w/everyone.
    - david

    Thank you!
I haven't read all of your post yet but from what I have read I believe we are in agreement. I have copied it into my notes on the MacBook Air. When I get $ together and get my MBA I will definitely be going back and studying your post in detail.
    Thanks again!
    PS: you lucky dog!
