How I got SMTP on my iPhone to work

My solutions may or may not work for you, but here goes:
My wife's new iPhone would not send or receive mail from her mobile me account and would not send from an ISP mail account. I managed to fix both problems:
1. Re: mobile me mail. Her account is a sub-account of my account, which is an original .mac account. Even though her sub-account was added after the MobileMe introduction, her new account was imported to the iPhone as [email protected] Whenever we tried to send email, it would time-out and say "address invalid" and/or "unable to connect with smtp.mac.com." I suspected that the servers were not recognizing a ".mac" address. Fortunately, when I manually added a new mobile me account on the iPhone, changing the name from [email protected] to [email protected], this new account worked. I then deleted the old name@mac account on the iphone. Contacts, calendars, and bookmarks managed to sync up just fine.
2. Re: the local ISP account. For some reason, when the iPhone imported my mail account info, it erroneously turned on SSL for outgoing mail. When I turned it off, everything worked fine.
The one thing linking these issues seems to be the iPhone's poor ability to set up account info correctly (for various reasons, it seems). Thus, one may want to check the account settings (all of them) to be sure they are correct. Do not assume any were faithfully imported.
I hope this experience helps some people. This whole 3G roll-out has been a flail.

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

    If you look in the audio output port, is there a red light showing.  If so, the internal switch is stuck..  Insert the headphones a few times, jiggle a toothpick inside or shot some compressed air to trip the switch.  If no success, have the Apple store genius bar technician do it.

    It says the following about Error 21:
    These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
    Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

    How do you delete the primary SMTP server. I'm on 2.2.1 My outgoing mail is not working and I figured since I'm a Mobile Me user I'll change the SMTP setting on the iPhone.
    I can't add a new smtp server. I go into account info for my Mobile Me and select SMTP. I can't see how to delete the primary server and when I try to add server I enter smtp.mac.com then my user name and password. I see 3 check marks after I press Save. I says it verified. But it never shows up on the list. I have secondary server but I can't figure out how to delete that one. Its the ATT smtp server cwmx. All that info is ghosted yet it's not on my desktop account.
    If synced Mobile Me but nothing changes.
    Confused and I can't find any help on Apples website.

    I have the same problem.
    Not sure, but I think the iPhone won't let you modify certain email settings of accounts created by syncing to your laptop or PC.
    Delete the account on your iPhone and create it again manually (on the phone itself.)
    This worked for me.

He mentioned that while carriers generally have to dot he unlocks they have unlocked international phones. My question is has anyone tried to dot his from Canada to the US. Also If you are still under warrenty and get a refurbished one in the US, at what point does it lock to your existing carrier.     Unlock can be done only by original Carrier. You should get
    this straightened out before leaving Canada. Warranty on your
    iPhone is not international - if you need any repair or replacement,
    you will have to return iPhone to Canada for this to be done.

    Only your cellular provider can unlock your phone provided it can be unlocked. Note that using it on T-Mobile means you must have either a GSM or CDMA phone depending upon which T-Mobile requires.

    I just got a new iPhone 4S and gave my first generation iPhone to my kid to use as an iPod. I transferred the phone number so now the new iPhone works as my phone and the old iphone did not connect to AT&T but did work as an iPod (or through wireless). Rather than just sync'ing to his computer, he erased the iPhone somehow while it was not connected to a computer. This apparently erased everything including activation. Now when he hooks up to iTunes on a Mac or PC, he automatically goes to iTunes Store and gets a page asking for him to activate. The iphone has multiple languages on the screen and window for making emergency call so it looks like he wiped the old iphone "clean". From reading discussions, my impression is that iPhone needs to be activated before you can use even as an iPod.  So my question is how can I get this old iPhone to work as an iPod?
    I do have Time Machine backups of my Mac from when the old iphone was activated and connected to AT&T.   Is there some way to use this to restore iphone to the way it was before the above?
    I suppose the other option would be to do some kind of jail-break fix?

    More inof:
    I saw an old post that said: "Does original iPhone work without phone service -- Yes, but you won't be able to install future firmware updates or restore the iPhone with iTunes if wanted or needed.. Both require the iPhone being activated." 
    Not knowing this limitation, we did a full restore/reset on an old 1st gen iphone, so is there anyway to get it working like an ipod.  Per above, I get a screen asking me to activate.
    AT&T even obliged me by allowing this phone to be reactivated (for a few days) and gave me a new sim card to put in the phone, but it wouldn't reactivate probably since it's so old:  AT&T didn't know what to do and Apple wouldn't deal with a product out of warranty.
    So now phone is not activated and am basically locked out from using as ipod.

    Have you tried deleting the songs from Settings?
    Settings -> General -> Usage -> Manage Storage (not the iCloud link!) -> Music and then click Edit to enable you to be able to delete.

    It has been reset to some sort of start-up mode, where you can activate the iPhone, but it is linked to the old apple id (the unknown, previous owner's) and since I do not have the password nor the e-mail for this old apple id, I cannot figure out how to link the iphone to my own apple id and finally get it activated.

    The Apple ID and Password that was Originally used to Activate the iDevice is required
    If you do not have that information you will not be able to use the Device.

    Update:  I reset my phone again and this time I restored it from my last iCloud backup.  That "sort of" worked.  (The missing info was on my phone temporarily, but it's still missing from iCloud.com and as the phone syncs with the cloud the missing contacts are disappearing.) 
    This is good news, but I'm losing progress.  How can I restore my iCloud settings to that last backup?

    You can not access the backup directly.
    Did you restore your replacement from this backup?
    If so then you already have everything in the backup on your device.
    If not, you can wipe the device and restore from this backup:
    Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
    What is it you are worried about losing that isn't already on your current device?

    Reset
    Restore with back up
    Rstore as new
    all as required and as described in User guide

    Try resetting your iPhone.  Hold the on/off and home buttons together for about 10 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
    On a separate point, you may wish to consider updating your iPhone if you're still on iOS 5.0.1 as your post says.
