How I sped up my LR4

Previously I was deleting/renaming the LR4 preferences file to speed up LR4, but I only found this to be a temporary fix. It didn't fix it permanently. A few people here are saying it's caused by a corrupt preferences file. I haven't explored the route of regenerating the file and making it read-only so LR4 can't "corrupt" it.
However, I have done some exhaustive researching (mainly through google) on why LR4 has been a turtle. A lot of people claim that it used to be fast (almost as fast as LR3 days). I didn't understand why LR3 was so much faster than LR4 and it was infuriating when I needed to sit down and edit. But after doing a couple things, it is pretty quick for me now and has stayed this way. Your set-up might vary, but here is mine:
2011 MBP 17" i7 2.2ghz 16gb ram
OCZ Vertex 4 SSD
Thunderbolted to an Apple Cinema 24" and daisy chained to the Promise Pegasus R4 array.
Here is what I changed:
- I made OSX start in 64bit mode, when it was only running 32bit normally (important since this allows OSX to access the full 16gb of ram)
- Potentially corrupted ICC colour profiles. So I went ahead and backed them up and deleted mine and recalibrated afterwards if required.
- LR4.2 cache size. I increased it from 20gb to 80gb on the same drive that LR4 was running. Purge your Cache.
- I found that OSX on my MBP was tremendously slower when I hooked up an external display so I disabled the internal display (http://gizmodo.com/5938452/a-trick-to-make-using-an-external-monitor-with-your-macbook-way -better) and this has been incredibly better. Has to do with the graphics card having to support two displays when natively it is only meant for one.
- Resolution. I find if I decreased the resolution of my cinema display, from 2560 to 1920x? ( the highest resolution of the 17" mbp) LR4 is marginally faster. You can even test this by resizing the LR4 window and seeing how much faster it is.
- LR4 Catalog Settings -> File Handling.
-> Standard Preview Size (set to 1024, unless you need higher)
-> Preview Quality (set to low)
- Render 1:1 previews on Import
- Optimize Catalog

I am running LR4.2 and Photoshop CS6 Ext (most recent version) on a Windows 7 Pro PC.
I did a Pano Merge the day before yesterday.
1. In LR4.x, select the photos you want to merge (I like to do a Lens Profile, White Balance and Noise Reduction on them first. I do this on a representative image. Then I Synch those sttings across the selected images.)
2. Right Click on one of the selected images or a selected Thumbnail in the filmstrip.
3. In the pop-out menu, select "Merge to Panorama in Photoshop CS6" (I think that's close to the exact wording.)
4. After some crunching, you will get a merge Window which allows you to select other options for the merge. This happens after LR4 exports copies of the images selected.
5. Select your options and start the merge.

How to import photos into LR4 that LR states have already been imported.

LR4 in import mode shows photo files that it has labeled with a leading "_" in a muted format and states they have already been imported and will not allow importing. I have been unable to locate them by file name or date in LR or using file searches. How can I find and/or import them? Do I have to rename all the files by deleting the leading _ in the file name?

Duplicate file detection is based on more than just file name. Duplicate file names are allowed in your catalog. You can try turning off the "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates" (under the File Handling roll-out on the right panel of the Import dialog window) and see what that does for you. As to finding the files that these are (potentially) duplicates of, it's hard to say. Name and date are some of the easier ways of doing it. What folder it got imported into may be another. If you've been using keywords and/or Collections, this may help as well.

Exported images into LR3 instead of LR4. How can I export to LR4

I imported 300 images, edited 10 or 12 before I realized they were in LR3. How can I bring them into LR4, keeping the changes I made. Is it easier to just delete folder and start all over?

In LR3, select the images in question, export them as catalog (selected images only, no negatives) to a temporary location (folder). In LR4, Import from Catalog by choosing the temporary catalog just created.

How do I reimport to lr4?

I have PSE10 and LR4. I can export from LR4 to PSE10 with Photo-Edit in- when I right click on an image.
Once I am done editing in PSE10, I click Save and it does not transfer back to LR4, instead it wants to save in the root file when all original NEF files are. I have a screen shot but unab;e to attach.
There's a box which I cannot check which states save in Version Set with Original
When I had CS4, I did not experience this problem

On the disk that you want to move your photos to create a new folder.
In Lightroom press G so that you are in the Library.
In the Folders panel, click the + and then navigate to the new folder on your new disk.
Select that folder and it will appear in the Folders Panel under the Name of your new disk. It will have a green light next to the name of the disk whenever it is plugged into your computer.
Again, it is critical that you have at least two back ups of your photos before doing anything else so that you do not end up losing your photos permanently.
I recommend that you read Martin Evening's Book on Lightroom.

How do I merge my LR4 and LR5 .lrcat?

I just upgraded to LR5 from 4. I see there is in my Pictures folder:

Q: How do I merge these two catalogs into one?

How can I make my LR4.3 to support Video in Develop module?

Since I installed my Lightroom4 (v4.3), I am not able to edit video. The video will play in Library module, but as soon as I switched to DEVELOP module, the middle panel greyed out and 'Video is not supported in Develop' appeared.
Please somebody tell me how to make Lightroom to support video in develop module. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Lightroom doesn't support video in Develop, and never has. Only in Quick Develop.

How to increase brightness of LR4 cropping grid

The grid is hardly visible in all outdoor images, except those with very dark backgrounds or shadow areas.

There isn't a way but you can...take note of your exposure slider setting, crank it down a couple of stops, tweak your crop, return your exposure setting to where it was.
Not elegant but I use it outdoors on my laptop when it is too bright to see what is going on.

That camera requires Lightroom 5.2 or newer. If you insist on staying with Lightroom 4.4 then you will have to use the free Adobe DNG converter to create digital negative copies of your raw files. You can use the latest version of the DNG converter.

How to reverse geocode in LR4 if image is already tagged with latitude/longitude

I've seen Terry White's video about geocoding by importing a .gpx file, but what if I've already got the latitude and longitude, and what I need is for Lightroom 4 to look up the city, state, country, etc. Is this possible?

This fixed the problem for any photo that does not have existing GPS coordinates embedded. Two continuing problems:
1 - Sadly all of my images that already have GPS coordinates embedded (iPhone shots and dSLR shots with a GPS unit) will not auto fill the City, State, Country fields.
2 - Having to click on the City, State, Country fields to commit them makes the feature of little value as it saves no time. I can select images in grid mode and batch append the individual fields faster than clicking into the fields to commit. I imagine this can be fixed by a preference that allows for some type of auto commit of the Google appended metadata.

Question. How do I get my LR4 to stop freezes up when I try to import.

I have LR 4, and every time I try to import any new pictures the system just freezes up. It so frustrating I want to throw this piece of garbage out the windows. I am running Windows 8.1 and it has work for about a year, and now I can't seem to get any customer support.

How to upgrade a Lightroom 4 catalog to LR5?

I have two separate Lightroom catalogs associated with my Mac laptop computer, both of which are stored on separate external hard drives. One external hard drive catalog is operating on LR5 but the other external hard drive catalog is still operating on LR4. The Lightroom 5 download went smoothly on the first LR catalog but I am unable to figure out how to apply the downloaded LR 5 onto the other LR4 catalog. Can anyone explain how to upgrade the second LR4 catalog to LR5?
Not sure if this is important to note but I purchased LR5 on my laptop. In addition to my laptop LR5 is also now working on my desktop computer. Both computers are Macs. Only two computers are associated with Lightroom.

How to move ALL my images to a new SSD in laptop

I am adding a new SSD to my laptop (ran out of room) and want to move ALL my images (25,000) from my current Drive C to the new Drive D on my Alienware laptop. How do I do "adjust" LR4 so that it sees the images on the D Drive versus the C Drive? I can't find an answer and I do NOT want to make a mistake here to say the least
