Just curious....
It is critical to get exposure right in the camera. If the dynamic range of the scene is less than that of the camera, you have some exposure latitude, but it is best to expose to the right so as to get a better signal to noise ratio. Some degree of overexposure can be corrected in ACR, but blown channels (the green usually blows first due to white balance) result in loss of data and the colors may not be accurate. The white balance set on the camera does not affect the raw data, but is merely stored as metadata. If there is no neutral reference in the scene (a WhiBal or similar card is better than a white T-shirt), the an accurate white balance may be hard to obtain. In this case, it is better to use a WB preset by taking a reading from a white balance card.
ACR ignores camera settings other than WB, so the contrast, saturation and tone curve set on the camera are of no significance.

What camera raw default settings would you use for the Canon 5D Mark 3. I have PS CS6.  Thank you.

Really, this is a question you should be asking yourself...
What do you shoot? Makes a difference...
Typical ISO that you shoot? Makes a difference...
Shooting for clients or yourself? Makes a difference...
Look, there is no magic bullet...the ACR/LR "Default" should only be changed for those adjustments you make 70-90% of the time and sould not be confused with image by image adjustments...
So, as asked, your question can not really be answered other than to say, use a default that suits you.

  • How important are Aggregation and Exceptional aggregation

    Hai All,
When defining a key figure, we define the aggregations, Aggregation (Min, Max etc.)and Exceptional Aggreagtion (Min, Max etc.).
How important are these. For example, for delivery dates, I know that thats the way the result row is calculated, either to display the min or max value. But except this, is there any other effect such as if there are more than one delivery date then defining Min. would take the earliest delivery date???
Please correct me if I am wrong. But I am just trying to find out the complete use of that definition of aggregation when creating key figures.
    Thanks.

there are diffferent settings for keyfigure aggreation and bex display settings
    rsa1 > change kf > aggregation tab:
this is the one which determince if the kf is a cumulative or  non-cumulative.
    rsa1 > change kf > additional properties :
here are the bex display settings.

  • How to change Camera settings while NetStream is published with H264 codec

    Hi,
when I'm using H264 codec I can't modify my cam.setMode(w,h, fps) because my stream hangs (second call to cam.setMode() uhangs video. When I'm using Sorenson codec that same code works fine.
So my question is how can I change Camera settings when I'm publishing images from this camera with NetStream encoded with H264. I'm using Flash Player 11,3,300,270 Windows 7 64 bit ActiveX.
Swf compiled to target Flash Player 11.3, swf-version=16.

Try to unpublish/pause publishing just before setting the things on camera and resume/publish again after the settings are applied.

  • How/when are Camera Profiles applied?

I am trying to understand Camera Profiles and how they fit into the RAW conversion process.
Are Camera Profiles applied to the RAW data prior to demosaicing or to the initial RGB values after demosaicing?
In either case, it seems that the ultimate results which one gets with a specific camera and profile are going to
potentially differ based on the software that is eventually used for the demosaicing.  Is this correct or am I totally
    missing something basic here?
Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

    > Which is different than for making DNG Profiles...
I had to put it more precisely,  it takes also a specific process to make ICC/ICM camera profile that will work w/ the specific raw converter... I did not mean that it will be exactly the same process as for DNG as you will be using different software at least...

  • How Important Are Broadcast Colors?

I know the purpose of broadcast colors, keeping your IRE levels above 7.5 and below 100, but how important is this if you're not going to broadcast? If you're just making a video for DVD and web, do you still need to apply Broadcast Colors to your entire project? Is there a chance of your video damaging televisions? Are the newer televisions (i.e. LCDs, Plasmas, etc) still prone to this type of damage?

    >Is there a chance of your video damaging televisions? Are the newer televisions (i.e. LCDs, Plasmas, etc) still prone to this type of damage?
A DVD is digital, meaning it will whatsoever NEVER give out more than all bits set to 1 (or set to high in other wording). That is an absolute limit! And then, the digital to analog converter will only put out what its max is for all bits = 1, also an absolute limit. And I can assure you that any input circuity that receive that output from the digital to analog converter will tolerate that signal (unless the designers were drunk and everybody in the quality assurance department also was more than drunk).
Now, of course, if you made a DVD with only white video that made all bits be 1, and played that over and over for a long time on your TV (CRT, or "tube"), yes, you would probably, after a year or two, see some degradation to your TV's screen.
By now I hope you understand that plasma and LCD which is digital to "the end", just can't get over-loaded.
But, screen-savers are there for a reason, and that's only for "tear and wear" (sp?) and "burn in" (burn in is mostly for CRT's though).
Broadcast colors are something to be aware of though. It is a hang-over from an all analog world with signals that could go "all over the limits" and screw up circuitry. Probably not so much ruin them (they made limiters before also) but make them to behave funny.
It seems to me like some encoders (maybe more codecs) have this "taste of the hang-over" because sometimes they do strange things when it comes to "very high luminance in some spots".
So, have it mind, but like Jim, I haven't had too much problems with that (making sure I'm within broadcast colors). I think it's all about testing your output (DVD or web) before delivery.

  • Appassure Users - How many Repositories and Locations do you use?

For those using AppAssure, how many repositories do you use per Core? Just 1 per core or more than that? Also, how many storage locations do you use (even if they are all on the same physical disk)?I ask because we were using just one repository on our backup Core, but over time we've needed to increase the size of it by adding storage locations (we add them in a folder with numbered subfolders per new "location"). We decided to add 200GB at a time as needed when we first deployed so now we've ended up with about a dozen or so "locations" of about 200 GB each on the same local drive. The reason I'm asking is we've cleaned up some large sets of files from some of the protected machines (in one case, reduced used space by about 75%) and would like to reclaim some of the space on the backup server the repository is currently using but...

    1) But what You use to monitor server behavior, do You use Resource monitor? By example I can see some network and cpu activity during test, but how can I analyze this data..
or I'd use some video-capture tools(like 'camtasia studio'), record this system monitor and then analyze?
    2) I understand correctly, that this tool covers "WFE test", mostly IIS, like pages generation; SQL database should be tested by other methods.

  • How to include camera settings on actual image during export

Is there a way to include camera settings directly onto the image upon export of image(s) in Aperture Program?

Not without a plug-in.  Aperture does not allow compositing.
The plug-in BorderFX can likely allow you to do what you want, and more.  Recommended.

I heard that if you render straight out to FLV then upload it to  Youtube,   Youtube will not convert the Stereo audio to Mono lower  quality.   It will retain exactly the same audio settings as you  rendered out.
However, if you use MP4 or something else,  it will render it down to Mono lower quality.

  • How Important are ICC Profiles when Importing Stills into Premiere Pro?

    Hello,
I came across the following troubling language in a review of one of Steven Hullfish's books on Color Correction:
"I also felt as though the author neglected to give ICC profiles enough attention.
Granted, they are seldom used in pure video workflows, but there are an awful lot of folks out there compositing still images into video content who need to know how to soft-proof against the right destination space in Photoshop so they aren't surprised by the color shifts they see in their ICC-unaware video software. Surely that should merit a pull-quote of its own somewhere."
My photos have been saved in PhotoShop in the ProRes color space.  Is this going to cause unpredictablility in how my colors look when shown on a 30 foot screen?
Is Premiere Pro a type of what this author describes as "ICC-unaware" video software?
If so, what steps should I be taking?
    Thanks,
    Matt Dubuque, 100 Trees

Premiere Pro does not use ICC color profiles at all. Photoshop and After Effects do.
When you are working with non-color-managed applications, it's especially important that you preview your work and check your output on the same sort of device on which your audience will be viewing it.

  • How important are the Cache Backup Battery Modules

I have finally gotten my raid in full speed by selecting write cache and drive cache options in the raid admin. It looks like cache backup batteries are recommended for those options, but I don't have any. How critical is it to have those batteries ? I work with broadcast video and 12 client setup.

If you aren't using a UPS, they are very important. If you suddenly lose power with the cache enabled, there will be data that was written to cache but not to disk. That data will be lost -- this could cause data loss and/or corruption of the volume.
If you have a UPS (actually, two separate UPSes with one side of the RAID connected to each), then the battery back-up modules are less important. What they do is maintain power to the cache for at least 72 hours in the event of a power failure. So long as you get power back to the RAID within this window, data will be safely pushed from the cache down to the disks on the RAID.
For $300, I think it's an easy choice, personally.

  • What settings do you use on your X-Fi?

EAX: On, Effects: 0.0dB, DSP: None CMSS3D: Off Crystalizer: Off SVM: Off EQ: Off

well u can go right ahead and turn off that EAX in console, its in no way connected to the EAX in your games, as u said games produce sound through api's in their engines. better look at Alchemy for EAX support in games cuz thats where it is. and ye CMSS3D wont do anything for you since its designed to give additional functionality in surround not stereo systems. and for EQ i tell u to go right and experiment, there is no system that cant use a lil fine tuning to adjust it to your music style, room or just your hearing, we all hear lil diferent.
anyway for reference what "good" speakers are u using?
i got X-Fi Titanium PCI-e over DTS connect to Z-5500
EAX: off? CMSS3D: Stereo surround 50%? Crystalizer: rarely ~30%? SMV: off? EQ: attachment
tbh i assumed wrong, u really have no need for any of the X-Fi functions but if your speakers are at least decent i guarantee u can get more out of them with a proper EQ... and dont read guides how to set up something that is based on personal expirience, there is no "THE RIGHT WAY TO DO IT", try and see what fits you.
