How is 2x2Gb "divided" on a system that only allows 3Gb?

I currently have 1Gb + 2Gb installed in my Macbook. Because of some good fortune, I have access to a 2x2Gb set. Since the 1+2 setup does not take advantage of the DDR2, I figured I'd go for the 2-3% boost (small, I know) from paired chips. My question concerns how the Macbook will allocate the two chips. Will it work in a 2x1.5Gb "mode" or use "1+2"? If the latter, it's not worth installing since the pairing would be no different from a speed perspective (I assume) than my current physical setup.

I thought I was pretty clear.
Your answer sounded like you were saying the system would use all 4Gb, which is why I felt the need to clarify. My understanding is that the pre-Santa Rosa chips do not use the last 1Gb at all. They use 3Gb total (1Gb for system, 2 for programs). I haven't read anything that says it's even a matter of the typical limitation of the 32-bit OS but is, instead, an Apple hardware setting (i.e. PC's use 3.3Gb whereas pre-Santa Rosa's only use 3Gb). I may have this completely wrong and it's identical to the PC 32-bit "problem." If so, my original question becomes moot since I already know that answer.
In case you didn't notice 2x1.5 GB and 1+2 GBs both equal 3 GBs.
That does not mean they are the same. I'm very aware of the Math. Mismatched chips don't get the benefit of dual-channel.
There is no "2x1.5 GB mode."
Hence my use of quotation marks: to show that I was aware of this but still needed to describe the situation. Nevertheless, the mapping is important since mapping out 1Gb on one chip could have an adverse impact on performance compared to mapping out 512 Mb on each.
If you are asking does installing a matched pair provide the benefit of dual-channel interleaving, then the answer is 'Yes."
Yes, that's what I was asking. I guess I too thought I was clear. Even if the increase of 2x2 is 2-3% over 1+2, for the $10 I'm paying to do it, it's worth the money.

Are you sharing the same iCloud account with your family members and they all have access to the password?
If so, that's why. iCloud accounts are not designed to be shared if you want to keep your email, contacts, calendars etc. seperate.

  • TS1884 How do you cope with a system that shuts itself down after a safe boot progress bar is completed?

How do you resolve a problem with a system that shuts itself down after a safe reboot and when the progress bar is completed? Thanks.

Thanks for you response - the honest answer is I don't know, not being particularly IT literate. I do know however that I'm running Maverick if that is of any help?
I also tried the Command R route, along with holding some other keys as per the Apple troubleshooting guide, but no luck. My wife pointed out though that the system was running slowly over the last few days and we had quite a lot of the 'spinning beach ball' before being able to undertake tasks.
Lastly, I inserted my start up disk bit as the system is unable to start I'm now unable to retrieve it. All-in-all a real pain.
    Appreciate any advice. Many thanks.

  • How could I fix a podcast video that only plays the audio?

My series of videos submitted to itunes podcast play fine except one, that only the audio plays but no video, how could I fix this?

Post a link like this so people can easily right-click and download the feed to take a look at it or copy/paste URL into post.

After looking at the 803 KB file you can see (well, hear) that the m4v file is only audio. http://www.40dayusa.com/photos/339485388_6Fv5j-640.mp4
This might have happened during movie export or file upload to server. After checking that the video plays in QT player locally re-upload the file to the correct directory with audio+video.

  • Help with designing a system that will allow a code to be inputted during a five second window

I need to design a system which allows a user to input a code combination during a five second window a correct input code during this window will generate a binary output of 1 to indicate that the lock is open, and at all other times and for any incorect code the output of the system will be zero indicating that the lock is closed. The system must be designed to allow a pre-set combination to be specified and easily changed. The system must display the time count during operation, noting that only three attempts for putting the code are allowed. On a fourth unauthorised attempt another application must set off an alarm. I have the
combination lock functioning but am having
difficulties with the five second timer and integrating the system as a whole. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Mazza,
Try this VI out. It returns a boolean instead of an integer, but this is really the same thing from what you are talking about.
You would use this VI as a subVI. It will pop up and allow user data entry. It passes the boolean out of it to see if the login was successful or not. You could also change things so that the password comparison (password in my case) is an input to the subVI as well.

  • How can I creat a control button that will allow the vi to run?

Instead of pressing the run button, I want to creat my own run button that will allow my vi to run.
    Any idea?
    Thank you

First you need to set the VI to Run When Opened (VI Properties>Execution). Then you create a front panel Boolean. On the diagram what you need to do is have some sort of idle state where nothing is done until the Boolean is pressed. It could be a separate while loop that doesn't exit until the Boolean is pressed, an Event Structure, or as part of a state machine. Look at the shippings examples Queued Message Handler, New Event Handler, Using Buttons for Options to name just a few.

  • Enabling 'File Sharing' on my Mac allows my Macintosh HD and Boot Camp to be visible and writeable on my home network. How can I turn this off, so that only folders/files I share are visible?

So I've been trying recently to get my MacBook Pro connected to my home network. There are two other desktop computers in the household, and I'd like to be able to connect to their shared folders, as well as allow them to access shared items on my MacBook Pro. I think I've read all the documentation regarding this issue on the Apple Support site. I do have administrator privileges on my Windows 7 computer.
Issues connecting from PC to Mac
A couple of days ago, I enabled SMB File Sharing on my MacBook Pro, and in addition to the already shared Public folder, I added another that resides within Movies. Then I went to my Windows 7 PC, and under Network, my MacBook Pro appeared. I double-clicked on it (I cannot remember if I was asked to enter my Mac user credentials; I think I was), and I saw the two shared folders: Public, and the Movies folder.
However, today I went back to my Windows 7 PC, accessed my MacBook Pro, entered username and password, and in addition to the two shared folders, both my Macintosh HD and Boot Camp HD appeared as shared folders, both fully writable. However, under File Sharing on my MacBook Pro, only the two shared folders (Public and Movies) appear in the Shared Folders list.
How can I prevent my Mac from sharing my entire partitions? How can I configure it so thatonly the folders I select to share are actually broadcasted across my home network? Also, it would be ideal if I can access these shared folders from my Windows 7 PC without having to enter my Mac user credentials.
Issues connecting from Mac to PC
I have a user account on my Windows 7 PC with the same name as my Mac, but with no password. When I try to connect to my PC from my Mac, the enter credentials dialogue pops up and asks me to either log-in as a Guest, or enter my User credentials.
The Guest account is disabled on Windows 7, and I assume that's I'm not able to log in as Guest (if it is possible to connect as a Guest without having to enable the Guest account on Windows 7, please let me know). Leaving the password field blank on the enter credentials dialogue tells me that it's incorrect (even though I don't have a password on my Windows 7 account).
Is it possible to access shared files and folders on my Windows 7 PC from my Mac without having to create a password protected account? If not, is it possible to create a password for the sake of accessing shared files, while not requiring it to log in to the account? I'm sorry, I know this last bit more falls under the category of Windows Help.

Sharing files from a Mac to a PC is a different animal.  I've never done it myself so you may want to repost a separate question on this topic.
From what I understand, in order to access files from a Mac on a PC, you must log in using your Mac username and password (no anonymous file sharing).  Since this is not very desirable from a security standpoint, Apple recommends creating a separate user account on the Mac that is dedicated to file sharing.  Give that account access only to the files/folders you want to share.  You can then give that user account name and password to your Windows users.

  • How do I restore my iPod Touch that only turns on when plugged into the wall?

I found my old iPod Touch 4th generation in my backpack, and my backpack went through the wash, (It shouldn't of been too bad since it was in the side pocket) but it goes dead instantly as soon as I take it out of the wall charger, and it does not turn on when I plug it into my computer. It also has a pass, (That I forget) so I need to restore it. Is it possible to restore it without connecting it to a computer?

No. You have to connect the iPod to a computer with iTunes to restore the iPod.
Did you throughly dry the iPod before you started try to use it?

  • How does one handle Stock agencies that only allow 64 characters for keyword lists

since LR4 puts the keywords in alphabetical order the keywords would be truncated and my most popular keywords would not make it to agencies search engines. Anybody know of a way to put the most powerfull keywords up the front. Or do I need to edit keywords specifically for this agency thus doubling my work.

The Enet-485 contains several levels of buffers which impact how flow control works. When you write data from the PC the data buffer is transmitted to the Enet-485 where it is stored to be transmitted out of the desired port. In addition to deep software buffers, the Enet-485 also has a deep (128 byte) hardware FIFO that lays just above the physical (RS-485) layer.
This FIFO is "RTS/CTS" sensitive and can react (ie: "turn off") very quickly in response to RTS/CTS handshaking. However the software flow control (XON/XOFF) is handled by the Enet-485 firmware. Thus if the TX FIFO has more then 5 bytes and an XOFF is received, it is not possible to turn off the serial stream until the FIFO is empty, which causes a data overrun.
    The reason why wait
ing between bytes works (but is slow) is that at any time an XOFF character is received, the FIFO will contain less than 5 bytes and thus not overflow.
However, if you know the size of the receive buffer, then is it possible to send data in lagre (40k) chunks with a slight pause between to allow for the XOFF to be received and processed? You can guesstimate the timing based on the baudrate, buffer size, and network delay (typically ~100ms but can be more).

  • I got an old game set up for system 7.5 and my 10.6.8 wont run it.  Is there a download of the older systems that would allow me to play this game?

Any ideas on how to get this old game working on the newer model computer?  The message I get is that it wont run it "because Classic environment is no longer supported".

You could look into Sheepshaver which supports older OS versions but I hear can be very tricky to install.  you may also find that a game will not work on it because games often want to control the hardware directly and an OS7 game will have absolutely no idea how to run your computer.  Frequently it is recommended you just buy an old Mac capable of running OS7.
Even if you had a Classic-capable computer it is still quite possible it would not run an OS7 game. I found many of my OS7 games stopped working even when I ran a computer actually booted to OS9.
Which game is this?  Some old favorites are being re-released for OSX, e.g. Solarian.
By the way, it would be better to post this in the correct forum ((probably Snow Leopard) since this forum is intended for questions about how to use this web site.

  • Is there a way to download and use an old verison (3) while also maintaining and using the newer verion? One of my clients using an invocing system that only supports up to version 3.

I have a major client whose invoicing system only supports up to version 3 of Firefox. I'd love to be able to invoice them from home, but I don't want to downgrade my newest version of Firefox just for them.
Is there a way to download Firefox 3 and install it, while still maintaining my version 6? I am using a new MacBookPro with OS 10.6.8.

you can restore from your backup again just to get the notes. once you've restored from the backup, copy your notes into your icloud notes group or email them to yourself - basically, get them somewhere else so they're not just locally stored on the device. once you've moved your notes elsewhere, restore the device as new again like apple had you do. this will again put a fresh version of the operating system on your phone like it has right now
there's no other way to access the notes that are in your backup
