How is an app different than a regular program

I'm trying to figure out why I would want to download a program via the App Store vs downloading the dmg and installing it the old fashion way. What's the difference between and app and a regular program??? Take Pages. I can get it from the App Store or buy it and install it via the dmg. Is there a difference?
Thanks!

Here is an excerpt of the Mac App Store ToU's:

Your license to each App Store Product that you obtain through the App Store Services is subject to your prior acceptance of this Licensed Application End User License Agreement (“Standard EULA”), and you agree that the terms of this Standard EULA will apply to each App Store Product that you license through the App Store Service, unless that App Store Product is covered by a valid end user license agreement between you and the Application Provider of that App Store Product, in which case the terms of that separate end user license agreement will govern. Your license to any Apple Product under this Standard EULA or separate end user license agreement is granted by Apple, and your license to any Third-Party Product under this Standard EULA or separate end user license agreement is granted by the Application Provider of that Third-Party Product. Any App Store Product that is subject to the license granted under this Standard EULA is referred to herein as the “Licensed Application”. The Application Provider or Apple as applicable (“Licensor”) reserves all rights in and to the Licensed Application not expressly granted to you under this Standard EULA.
a. Scope of License: This license granted to you for the Licensed Application by Licensor is limited to a nontransferable license to use the Licensed Application on any Apple-branded products running iOS (including but not limited to iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch) (“iOS Devices”) or Mac OS X (“Mac Computers”), as applicable (collectively, “Apple Device(s)”) that you own or control and as permitted by the usage rules set forth in the Mac App Store, App Store and iBookstore Terms and Conditions (the “Usage Rules”). This license does not allow you to use the Licensed Application on any Apple Device that you do not own or control, and except as provided in the Usage Rules, you may not distribute or make the Licensed Application available over a network where it could be used by multiple devices at the same time. You may not rent, lease, lend, sell, transfer redistribute, or sublicense the Licensed Application and, if you sell your Mac Computer or iOS Device to a third party, you must remove the Licensed Application from the Mac Computer or iOS Device before doing so. You may not copy (except as expressly permitted by this license and the Usage Rules), decompile, reverse-engineer, disassemble, attempt to derive the source code of, modify, or create derivative works of the Licensed Application, any updates, or any part thereof (except as and only to the extent that any foregoing restriction is prohibited by applicable law or to the extent as may be permitted by the licensing terms governing use of any open-sourced components included with the Licensed Application). Any attempt to do so is a violation of the rights of the Licensor and its licensors. If you breach this restriction, you may be subject to prosecution and damages.
The terms of this license will govern any upgrades provided by Licensor that replace and/or supplement the original Licensed Application, unless such upgrade is accompanied by a separate license in which case the terms of that license will govern.
One of the differences is that having a physical copy you can sell the software if you no longer need or want it. As you can see above, you can't do that with any MAS purchase - that license is not transferable. So, you are helping the developer make more money by buying from MAS - when you sell your computer, the buyer has to buy the app again - that makes it at least twice the selling price.
By the way, the same rules apply to anyone purchasing Lion from the App Store - the license is not transferable and the OS must be wiped and the original OS re-installed before selling it. The buyer has to purchase Lion again.
Due to the fact that all these purchases are not only tied to your machine ID, but your Apple ID as well, workarounds won't work - the buyer will not be able to re-download (or maybe even update) their OS or whatever app came with the used computer they bought. They will have to purchase the app again: smart move here - instead of selling one physical disk, the app can now be sold (for a slightly lower price) several times again and again.
And, adding another thought for anyone who is concerned about privacy: both StoreAgent (an automatic background service which scans your hard drive when you launch the app store so it can offer you updates or customized advertisements) and the Genius (if activated) will track what you have installed. One of the reasons I do not visit the app store.
As for bandwidth, even if you have unlimited access and a fast connection, it is still a waste of resources to be forced to download a complete copy of the OS (close to 4 GB) when a local reinstall would suffice nicely and take less time and effort. I won't do it again after testing it a couple of times (I now have at least 5 different backups).

how to download apps more than 50 MB on my ipad using cellular network.

You can't, the 50 meg limit can't be overridden (only Apple, with the agreement of the carriers, can change it) - you will either need to connect to a wifi network and download it over wifi, or download it on your computer's iTunes and sync it to the iPad

  • Is the iPad iTunes app quite different than the regular PC

I'm new to iPad. I went to check out iTunes app on iPad, and it is so limited what you can do. Very different than regular PC. Is there something I am missing?

It depends on what you want to see/manage - you can tap on your id at at the bottom of, for example, the Music tab in the iTunes app (or via Settings > iTunes & App Stores) and you can view/manage your id, address and payment info.

I have an iCloud account which seems to get my music to all my devices. How is iTunes Match different aside from storage in the cloud?

iCloud only allows you to redownload your music purchases whilst it remains in your country's store. With iTunes Match you can also upload your music from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs) and have it available in the cloud on your other devices/computers.

  • Local weather in Weather app different than the same city

In the Weather app on iOS 7, the temperature for the city of Charlotte, NC (where I am) is one number, but the temperature for the local city, also Charlotte, NC, is different. I don't understand how this happens. It's the same city. Does anyone know how to fix this? I've included a screenshot of both cities taken literally a second apart from each other.

    Hello James,
It sounds like you have the same city set up on your phone twice in the Weather app, and they both show different temperatures. The reason for this is the one on the left is using your current location, down to the zip code. The screenshot on the right is indicative the temperatures for the city as a whole. When you are setting up a new location for your weather app, you can enter a Zip Code, or city name and that is what determines what information you see.
Add a city or make other changes. Tap .
Add a city:  Tap . Enter a city or zip code, then tap Search.

  • How is TOTAL RMS different than AVERAGE RMS

I create spoken-word recordings.  One company that I work with specifys that the recording should be at a level that measures between -23 RMS and -18RMS.  It appears that audio editing programs label their RMS readings in various ways.  I had been using Average RMS but I think maybe this company is using a standard that comes closer to what ADOBE calls TOTAL RMS.  What attributes cause Audition to give one value to AVERAGE RMS and another value as AVERAGE RMS?

Total RMS used to be what happens if you add together all of the signals in your measuring time window (in Audition normally 50ms), and perform a RMS calculation on them, and that was a pretty standard way of measuring it. Average RMS in Audition is a little different, though. Reading through the somewhat cryptic help files about this reveals that to all intents and purposes, the RMS measurements will vary at different levels, because some attention is being paid to either Noise Criteria or Noise Rating curves. The lower the level gets with these, the more they favour lower frequencies over higher ones; in other words the figures reflect human annoyance factors rather than a specifically defined measurement criterion. And no, we can't tell you exactly how this is going to work, because the actual curves and weighting figures have never been made public, and it would take me several days to second-guess it from comparative readings. I simply don't have time...
It's been like this for ever. The original design of this was done by David Johnston, the program's original creator when it was Cool Edit, and I belive he's no longer associated even indirectly with Audition these days. Whether information about this is actually documented anywhere at all, I don't know. Questions about it come up periodically, and we can never answer them satisfactorily.
The original Cool Edit manual was just as useless about this. The exact words it uses to describe the Average RMS measurement are "Average RMS Power represents the average power of the entire selection. This is a good measure of the overall loudness of the waveform selection." And it's these words I've bolded that make the difference.
What happens with Total RMS measurements now seems to be a little different, and you end up with a figure much closer to a LUFS reading (you get this acccurately at the bottom of the statistics panel in CC). I know (because this is relatively recent) that the way the LUFS figure is calculated is according to the BS1770-2 standard - and that takes the whole program dynamics into account. What appears to happen with Total RMS in Audition is that it appears that an average of all of the windowed measurements, and that this in general turns out to be pretty close to the LUFS value as a rule.
Now, judging by the numbers they've quoted, the chances are that the company you are working for is using the recent standard for what you're doing - so if you are using CC, then it's pretty easy - select the whole waveform and quote them the value shown at the bottom of the screen. If you aren't using CC then there are several free LUFS meters available as VST plugins.
My personal view on this new standard, FWIW, is that it's a complete waste of time. It certainly doesn't achieve what it sets out to, or failing that all the broadcasters that use it have no idea what to do with it. And that very much includes the BBC, I'm afraid. The standard is supposed to keep overall programme dynamics within a certain loudness range, and save viewers/listeners having to adjust volume levels between programmes. And, it fails at that pretty comprehensively. Quite frankly, when it comes to broadcast dynamics standards, they'd have been better off forcing everybody to use the same settings on an Orban Optimod; that would almost certainly have worked better!

  • HT1296 Why are the apps in my itunes app different than those displayed on my phone?

The visual image of my iphone's apps in the itunes software shows a lot of apps that I have deleted.  How do I make itunes and my phone look the same?  I have synced them....what gives?

Are you looking at the purchased tab? The purchased tab shows all the Apps you have ever purchased (including Apps you've uninstalled/deleted). You can ignore them and look at the Apps on your iPhone when you plug in your iTunes.
The Apps you've deleted are still associated with your iTunes account.

  • Why is the number of photos in the Photos app different than the number of photos in iPhoto on the Mac?

I have an iPhone 4S and a MacBook Air. On the MacBook Air, in iPhoto, the number of photos is 3,563 (this is the number that appears next to the word Photos under library in the left hand pane). When I synch my phone with iTunes, I've selected Synch Photos from iPhoto and the number that follows that line is 3,546 photos. I have checked All Photos, albums, Events, and Faces.
On my iPhone under Settings, General, About, there are 4,293 Photos shown (the Camera Roll is empty).
I don't understand why these three numbers are not identical. Anyone know?

What version of iPhoto and system are you running? What mode are you in, i.e. Events, Photos?
If it's the Photos mode the number at the bottom will represent the number of photos displayed in that mode or the number of photos selected in that mode. The number will match the number next to the photos mode only when there are no photos in that mode that are selected.
If you click on the Events icon and then back on the photos icon the numbers should match.

  • How is a JQuery Vertical Accordian Different Than A Hide-Show Region

    Hello Everyone.
I an using Apex 4.0.1. I recently learned how to create a JQuery vertical accordian. I'm using the sample accordian that Patrick Wolf recently created/posted. It uses a really nice "accordian template" that he put together. It's really quite useful when it comes to saving space and all on a page.
Then I began wondering: How is this accordian different than Apex's own builtin Hide-Show Region template?
And so, I created a sample page on my workspace in apex.oracle.com. I placed a JQuery vertical accordian that consists of 3 regions: 2 reports and a chart. I added a little bit of JQuery to Patrick's template that causes all 3 accordian slices to be closed as opposed to the default behavior of having one slice always open. I also added code that allows a user to re-size the entire accordian either vertically and/or horizontally.
I then created 3 additional regions that mimic the first 3 regions above. These I placed in "column 2" on the page. For each region I assigned the "Hide-Show" template.
As far as I can tell, both the accordian and the Hide-Show regions provide the same functionality.
For the interested, here is a link to my page:
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=49919
The app has open authentication assigned, and so, no login credentials are needed. Please click the "Accordian" tab.
I realize that the accordian has more flexibilty in that one may add features like choosing to collapse/not collapse all slices and re-sizing, etc. I suppose one could do similarly for the Hide-Show regions using Javascript or JQuery but it would likely be an effort.
Admittedly, such added features are cool and all. Still, it's been my experience that in the majority of business-like production environments, such "cool" features are pretty much useless. For example, I do not see how re-sizing the accordian or Hide-Show regions has much purpose. In fact, such "cool" features often get in the way of the main goal of the application.
Of course, a JQuery accordian may also be created that expands/contracts slices "horizontally". I do not know of any way to do the same thing using Hide-Show regions. If someone does know how to do this, I (and likely others) would sure appreciate you sharing how.
So, then, with respect to basic functionality (saving page real estate by encapsulating several regions), how is a JQuery vertical accordian any different than Apex's own builtin "Hide-Show" region?
Thank you all for your thoughts/adice/code.
    Elie

    Hello Jari.
    Thank you for your help.
Yes. Now I do understand what it is you are doing in your accordian page. And also I want to thsnk you for providing the sample code on your page showing how to go about preserving the current state of the accordian when you navigate from/to the page.
You commented that this kind of state preservation is not available with the Hide/Show region. I'm thinking that you are correct, though I think I once saw something about doing this posted in this Forum. I'll search through and see if I can locate it.
In any case, have you (or anyone else reading this thread) any other differences between a JQuery vertical accordian and Apex's own Hide/Show region? Other than being able to apply Javascript to an accordian to do things like preserve it's state (like you did), what else may one do with an accordian that is not doable (or at least not easily doable) with a Hide/Show region?
Thank you for any further advice.
    Elie

  • Pint out different than monitor image

The print outs I get with Lightroom look competely different than any other program's printouts including Adobe Photoshop CS2. The color is not the same. I assume this relates to color management, but I set up the monitor and Photoshop seems fine. Lightroom colors are washed out in comparison, though both look similar on screen. What is going on? How can I fix this issue?

Jeremy, first look at the posts/threads on this here on the forum. There are lots and I am sure you will find the solution to your dilema.

  • App store update login different than Regular app store

I have updates to download from the app store and the login is different than when I download an app.

If those apps were purchased with the Apple ID that pops up - you have to use that ID in order to update the app. If you have more than one ID, this is normal behavior. One of the apps must need that ID in order to update.
If you know that this is not the case, and I'm not sure why that ID would come up if it isn't  the case. You can sign into the correct account in Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap the ID and then sign out, then sign in with the correct ID.

  • How can i recover application that i have purchased in a different app store than the one i am using now ?

I Have purchased some apps from a different app store than the one i am using currently. Is it possible to recover them as i am not finding them in my list of purchases. Thx

If I create a new iTunes account for the German itunes store, what happened with my previous purchases? Do they remain on my iPhone and my Mac's iTunes?
Nothing will happen to your existing purchases. Your computer will remain authorized - you can authorize a single computer to up to five iTunes Store accounts - and the apps and content will remain in place.
Can I switch from one acount to the other every time I want to update an application or purchase a new one?
As long as you're in the relevant country, yes. Again, the terms of use say that you agree not to even attempt to use an iTunes Store from outside of its country.
    Regards.
