How is Aperture or iPhoto suitable for my slide scanning project?

Hi!
I am confused as to what program to use for my project; I have many hundreds of slides/films/photos I will be scanning but I will make this as simple as possible.  Let's say this is what I have done so far:
1) Scan slides from 10 Kodak carousels and save as 18MB TIFFs ~2400dpi or greater. These are numbered Tray 1 001, Tray 2 001, Tray 3 001 etc. and each tray has 140 slides.  However, please note that these slides are mixed up within and sometimes between individual trays, i.e. some are from 1960 birthday parties, 1977 hiking trip, 1968 Christmas, etc.  (There is no way I will arrange them before scanning!)
2) Bring them into PSE 8 and do editing. Post editing, save as a separate JPG which is now 6 MB in size, and with the same name except of course the .jpg extension. Store the TIFFs on external HD.
3) This is where I am stuck!  I need to completely rearrange these JPG-images and give them more descriptive names. If I do not use  Aperture or iPhoto, I would probably make 10 separate folders, drag JPGs into these folders and their subfolders, relabel the JPGs, do more shuffling, and be done....but my arm would fall off by then.
Can you give me an idea of how my workflow would go if instead of step 3, I brought these mixed-up JPGs into Aperture for my rearranging (and probably more editing) using keywords/projects/folders etc?
I do have one more pressing question. If I go the Aperture route and I have finished my project and I want to take my Aperture library to a computer that does not have Aperture or iPhoto (say a PC) or bring them into Lightroom or some other program, what will happen to my file structure? Will a JPG I have labeled '1968 Christmas 001' still be in its folder I have labeled 'Christmas'? Will my Masters remain labeled 'Tray 1 001 as they were when I first imported?
I use iPhoto but have not imported any of these scanned slides because I just don't think iPhoto is suitable for my project.  I am also curious if Lightroom might be a viable alternative and once I have everything ordered and labeled to my satisfaction, I could then bring them into an 'iProgram' for the fun stuff.
Thanks and if anybody has any suggestions to better my workflow, feel free to comment!

If at a later time I choose to leave Aperture, can I get my files out in some semblance of the structure I have established?
Yes, Depending on the setting you give to Aperture it might not even be necessary to get them 'out', because they are not even 'in'. This is the widely discussed 'referenced' vs 'managed' topic. BTW, this only holds for the original files. Edited version always need to be 'taken out'.
If I go through the trouble of sorting all my photos and creating projects, albums, etc, when I export will it create a file structure similar to it?
Yes, you could tell Aperture to create a file structure similar to your internal structure.
And will it export the various versions, in addition to the original files when i export it?
Yes, but not simultaneously, by hitting one button. Exporting originals (called masters in Aperture terminology) and versions are two different buttons to push.
I understand from reading other forums that with iPhoto the library structure will be lost because it is an SQL database but I'm trying to figure that out with Aperture.
This is not entirely true. Both programs will export keywords, GPS data etc. etc. iPhoto will not create a specific file structure on export, but Aperture can do that. Some people are frightened that the files are stored inside a library, where they cannot physically see the files, but both programs have the ability to store outside a library package and in a location where you can physically see your files. Of course when you stop using these programs you will loose the database benefit (i.e. fast searching on various forms of metadata and using those data for sorting), since you'll now be managing your photos again with an ordinary file manager.

  • My aperture library has distorted for one of my projects. What can I do? (Details contained within)

My aperture library (Aperture 3 - with recent updates) has distorted for one of my projects. Originally, they were functional images, however, they are now essentially corrupt (composed of irregular colours/format). I have tried repairing library, generating thumbnails, and generating previews with no success.
    Here's the story:
I was importing my images from a Lexar Pro 300x 32GB compactflash disc (from a Nikon D3s Camera). They were generating thumbnails fine and uploading fine. I erased the disc and ejected upon completion of the uploading process. As I started to view the images they all went corrupt in front of my eyes (as I was viewing them). It should be noted that I am uncertain if corrupt is the correct terminology.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure out how to upload a screenshot of the image, however, it looks like random colour streaks.
My computer specs are as follows:
    24 inch iMac, 3.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Ram. Mac OS X 10.6.7.
Any advice/suggestions would be highly appreciated!
If any further information is required I will be more than glad to supply it, as these pictures have an element of sentimental value to them.

It definitely sounds like the RAW files are corrupted. What you were seeing in Aperture at first was the JPG preview the camera imbeds in the RAW file. Aperture uses that  at first to get an image up while it process the RAW file.
Because you deleted the images on the card already there is no way to know where the corruption took place. As Ernie wrote it is important to erase and format the card in the camera and definitely you don't want to erase until you're sure the image have been taken off the card and are OK.
All may not be lost however. There was a similar situation a while back see  How to find corrupt masters  I was able to access the preview and the resultant image was pretty good. If you really want or need to recover this images take a look at that thread and post back.

  • HT1229 how do you install older iPhoto suitable for Mavrick 10.9.5

for MacBook Pro  OS 10.9.5 Mavrick -
Problem, - I re-formatted the hard disk and reinstall the OS 10.9.5 Mavrick - for some reason the iphot either disappeared or did not appear on the system.
Downloaded iPhoto from the App  library - The new downloaded is not compatible with the current IO system - it is for the new OS
How can I find an iPhoto compatible with my OS
    Thanks
    Yas

for some reason the iphot either disappeared or did not appear on the system.
The reason is extremely simple - you erased it
    I re-formatted the hard disk
    You need to
    reinstall from the original source
    Could be
1 - the restore disks that came with the computer - if it came with CDs and you do not know where they are then contact Apple to see if they can be replaced
    or
2 - the iLife DVD that you purchased
    or
3 - the app store - log in under the Apple id used to purchase the software or to set up the computer - look under purchases - you might have to unhide or accept the Application first

  • Using Aperture and IPhoto together for RAW

    Hi All,
I have just received my MBP and will be using Aperture to edit my RAW files from a Nikon camera.
I was wondering if Aperture works the same as IPhoto in regards to the library function or do you still use IPhoto to arrange, tag your images etc...
If that is the case how do you do that if you are using RAW files? Does IPhoto recognise RAW images?
I would like to hear your workflow on a MAC.
    Cheers.

Sad to say Richard but you are close but not quite correct. Aperture has a much reduced set of RAW support vs. iPhoto. Of this I can personally attest, but they're both covered on the Apple site.
To add to some other points you address...
iPhoto is still needed for simple integration with other iLife apps., as Aperture has no iLife integration. There is an Aperture2iLife script available (Lightbox software) which automates an export and import process. If you carry an iPod around with photos, then you'll need to maintain iPhoto for that purpose. Welcome to the land of duplicates!
iPhoto does indeed process the RAW and all image work is performed on a JPEG version therafter. The RAW is never used, but is stored in the Originals folder (along with any original JPG or TIF files from the camera if these were shot vs. RAW).
Aperture's RAW converter is markedly superior to iPhoto, and the control and editing options likewise. As noted, Aperture does not change the original RAW (or other imported file), but saves the edit instructions (akin to adjustment layers in Photoshop) for rebuilding the image viewed from the original. Enhanced book and Web Gallery options exist vs. iPhoto ... so integration to iWeb isn't quite as important, though would be very useful.

  • How do aperture and iphoto interact

I am purchasing a new imac this week and am trying to get an idea on what software I want.  I've been using adobe photoshop elements for the past few years when I needed to fix any photos and iphoto to sort and 'hold' my collection.  I've been reading about aperture 3 and cannot find clear information on how it does or doesn't interact with iphoto.
From what I've been able to discern, aperture is more of a photo management system and PSE is more of a photo adjustment program.. correct?
So if I buy aperture3, when I download photos, does Aperture receive them or do they still come in through iphoto?  And if it is the latter, do iphoto and aperture work together?
I've looked at some earlier posts but I have not found a clear answer.  I do not want to duplicate software but I also was not that clear before on how iphoto and PSE might work together.  It seemed like I had iphoto import the pictures and when I needed to, I opened pse and used it to fix or play with a photo.
I also have my camera software, but the sort of adds to my confusion.  But maybe computers that don't have a program like iphoto need the camera software.
I'd appreciate hearing what works and what experienced aperture and/or PSE might tell me.

    Hello Calxoddity, Roger and Kirby,
All three of your answers were very helpful and I appreciate your time.  I tried to send this reply message a few minutes ago and when I went to hit send, it said I was not logged in... I HAD been logged in so maybe it timed out.  Anyway, this post comes through twice I am sorry.
I was feeling pretty befuddled with what to do, adding this topic to the decision on which computer to buy, etc.  So your time and wisdom helped me to get my needs into perspective.  I think I will start with the newer iphoto that comes on my imac and get PSE9 since my version of PSE is very old.. LOL  and then, spend some time learning about aperture 3, since as Roger mentioned, I can import/move the files over to aperture at a future time.  Since aperture 3 is the most expensive, it seems a wise move.
Oh, did read Kirby's article/post, thank you, very well written to help a newbie get a handle, and will watch the online tutorial for aperture 3 as well.  And maybe it will tell me there, but right now, with iphoto I can easily email a photo and I think it will easily be shared with an ipad2.  If I get aperture 3 and use it instead of iphoto, does it have an easy interface for sharing via email and/or the ipad?
    Thanks again, you are great!

  • How do people backup iPhoto library for offsite backup?

I use time machine for a local backup and I also copy the iPhoto library to another external USB HDD for extra backup.
So I know you should also have a backup offsite in case of disaster. So how do people do this? What methods, cloud? External HDD? DVDs? Etc and where do you keep it?
What I'm thinking is as the iPhoto library can become very large 100's of Gb it's not easy to backup to say the cloud or to DVDs (is this possible at all?), how do I do this?
Also once copied to say another external USB HDD, every week it changes so do I have to do a full copy of the library again everytime?
    Cheers

My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day.
These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected. For this job I use DejaVu because it makes a simple back up that is clear and can be tested easily without doing an full restore.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. Personally I use SmugMug but there are many options including flickr. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size, or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you will need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a restore.

  • Pages: How to export a PDF suitable for print-on-demand

I need to be able to export a PDF from Pages that will meet the specs for the IngramSpark or Lightning Source Print on Demand programs. They require a PDF that has all fonts fully embedded in one of these two PDF versions:
    PDF/X-1a:2001 or PDF/X-3:2002
Does Pages export - either through the export function or Print function - to either of those specs and does it embed full font sets?
    Thanks.

The reason neither Pages, or Swift Publisher nor most of the low cost DTP apps do this on OSX is because they use Apple's muddled print output. It almost but not quite outputs to PDF/X-3:2002, and even there there are caveats.
Indesign and QuarkXpress use their own print engines and Scribus uses GhostScript.
GhostScript is available for OSX. I have not tried this so you are in wide open territory, but experiment to see if it fixes Pages' output. My suspicions are that GhostScript may not capture Pages' output before it has already been through Apple's muddled output.
There are other problems with Apple's approach. No specifiable defined colours in Styles. No spot colours, and no proofing. ColorSync itself is powerful but undocumented and difficult to tailor. You can run the end result through Acrobat Pro's Press Check but it only picks up the errors, you are on your own trying to fix them.
The only easy to use, low price DTP application that meets your requirements is Serif PagesPlus, which runs only on Wimdows. You can run this in BootCamp or some other virtualiser.
Adobe lets you effectively hire Indesign CC by the month so may be a cost effective solution in the short term. It is a professional solution but has a professionally difficult interface.

  • How do I transfer photos from aperture and iPhoto to bridge?

How do I transfer photos from Aperture and iPhoto to Adobe Bridge.  I am using Photoshop CS6.  Many of my original photos were stored as raw files.

Here's how to access Mac iPhoto images for use in Photoshop
and so that they may be viewed by choosing that folder in Bridge..
    1. In the Finder, navigate to Users > [user name} > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
    2. Control-click (Right-click) the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
    3. A Finder window opens that shows the contents. The Masters folder (or called Originals folder) contains all of the photographs that are in iPhoto.
Photoshop cannot access this folder, but if you make a duplicate of the folder, the dupe will be accessible -- so:
    4. Control-click (Right-click) the folder named Masters (or Originals) and choose Duplicate.
5, Drag the duplicate folder which is named "Masters copy" or “Originals copy” from the iPhoto Library Finder window to the Desktop.
    6. Open images in Photoshop from file on desktop or view them in Bridge.
7  Rename the folder and move it elsewhere (probably to the Pictures folder), if desired.
