  • MacBookPro Freezes after Installing Latest Security Update 2006-003

After downloading and installing the latest security update 2006-003, MacBook Pro freezes when trying to do anything. Seems to do ok in safe mode but did freeze when trying to verify disk with Disk Utility. (did not try to repair as I am out of town at a motel without Tiger disks). Any suggestions before calling apple?
    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Since my post, I think I have solved the problem. At least MyMacBook is working ok so far. What I did is started up in safe mode (for the third time) then I went through the "Library" and looked for stuff that looked like it wouldn't work on a MacBook. This included some Norton Utility things. Also went through preferences and Application Support and did the same thing. By the way I had transferred all this stuff from my old Mac using the transfer app and connecting the two with firewire.
Anyway, it's been working for about an hour. I'll keep this post open for a couple of days to see if it keeps working.

  • Re-Install After 2006-003 SU

OK so having installed the 2006-003 SU which royal screwed my system up hanging immediately after startup (removing start-up items, disk repair permission repairs all had no effect) i decided to cut my losses and reinstall using the Archive and Install method.
Installation took an hour or so then hangs at at finishing installation (Running iweb application installer script) Restart the machine and it launches the second part of installation again (which again hangs at finishing installation) - ejected the disk and closedn the installer - which then just launches itself again and demands i re-insert the disk! How can i quit the installer and just boot the system up normally

Haha - "while your first question may be the most pertinent, you may or may not realize it is also the most irrelevant."
I booted up using the isntall disk and copied the stuff i needed to my ipod. Re-installed and it's working now.

  • Rosetta crashes after Security Update 2006-003

The other day I installed Security Update 2006-003, and now a number of PowerPC applications crash the machine.
It's a funny crash, the mouse keeps moving and the capslock key goes on and off, but that's it. Nothing on the screen animates or updates. Windows will not move, dock does not do anything. cannot force quit or command-tab. The only option is to do a hard reset or hard shutdown.
    I found this article:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060517111924138&query=rosetta+crash
    I hope it's fixed soon!
    Matt

    Hello!
I'm glad I found your post -- a brand new Intel Core Duo 20" iMac is doing the same for me after Security Update 2006-003.
What I've found on this end so far is that Norton AntiVirus 10 for Macintosh seems to aggravate the problem. I had a system that was running fine (complete with NAV10) before applying the 2006-003 update. At first I thought the problem might be due to user error--maybe NAV wasn't quite ready for Intel Macs, but Symantec says it is after you get version 10.1 from LiveUpdate. (I did.)
I finally had to erase the hard drive and reinstall the entire operating system from the provided restore discs. After I did that and got the latest software updates, I tried again with NAV. It still caused the same problem...a complete lockup.
The first time around, only NAV seemed to cause problems. Other PowerPC-native programs running in Rosetta seemed to be OK. This second time around any PowerPC-native app running in Rosetta (after the install of NAV10) would lock the machine up completely, except for the mouse pointer. (I have also noticed that the machine still responds to being pinged over the network, and that Apple Remote Desktop 3 says it is online. So the crash isn't stopping everything from working.)
So my conclusion is that there is something seriously wrong with Security Update 2006-003 and Rosetta, and it may be made worse by NAV10 for Macintosh. In any case, I'm going to steer clear of this update for now.

  • PPC-iMac: Black screen on restart after Security Update 2006-003

Did the Security Update 2006-003 this morning. On restart the screen is showing the grey Apple-logo for several seconds. Then it goes black, with the prompt in the upper left corner: "localhost/root:" Vent running in high gear. Entering unix-commands is possible, but no graphic interface coming up. How to fix this? Don't want to reinstall the whole system.
    iMac G5 20" PowerPC iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm having basically the same problem with my PowerBook 1Ghz Aluminum 17". After running the latest security update and latest iLife patches using SU, my system boots to the local Darwin consol login. I can see my HD and all it's files, but I can't get the machine to boot back into GUI mode. Safe mode doesn't work.
This was a newly refreshed system running 10.4.6 and ONLY iLife installed - nothing funky and no 3rd-party apps other than those pre-installed in 10.4.x.
I've booted with the 10.4 DVD, repaired permissions (again) and repaired the drive (reported not needed). Zapping the PRAM doesn't help.
Perhaps I have a lemon because I have had problems with this machine in the past, but only when installing major system updates between 10.3-10.4 with non-apple RAM. I don't think this is the culprit this time as the machine has been functioning fine since the last fresh 10.4 install (with some OWC RAM).
Any ideas? Anyone have tips for what can be done in the console to repair the system?

  • My MBP Still freezes after deleting SU 2006-003

    Hi Guys,
Like many others I did the SU 2006-003 on Friday, and found my MBP freezing up on start-up, after deleting the Version Cue CS2 from the start-up items I still got the freezing effect, so I called Apple and they said that my MBP had an option to reinstall the 10.4.5 (my DVD version) without loosing my user preferences, so I did that. And all my problems where solved, and then I did a software update of all the updates except the SU 2006-003, to my surprise the MBP still freezes. So I came to the conclusion that both SU 2006-003 and QT 7.1 came out on the same day, but everyone thought that SU 2006-003 was the problem. When all along was the QT 7.1 causing the problem, both QT 7.1 and Adobe Suite apps run in the background at start-up, apparently they contradict each other now, so I tried reinstalling Adobe Suite CS2, and I can't even think about installing Version Cue, cause that freezes the MBP right away, during the installation!!!.
So after doing a save mode and deleting Version Cue (again), I go back to my normal system (witch now is 10.4.6) and try to run the rest of the Adobe Suite apps, to my surprise all work well except the Adobe Acrobat, the main app for PDF's, once I double click that App the MBP freezes up. So now I'm tempted again to reinstall the 10.4.5 and not do the QT 7.1 update as well.
Can anyone give me a better solution? This one takes to much time and a great deal of concentration, cause not all of my apps work well after this, so I have to reinstall them again, mainly Parallels, Missing sync, Documentstogo, Backupbuddy, and others. It's a real pain.

No, I don't use the Adobe suite. I do have the Adobe Reader, Photoshop Elements 4.0, and Acrobat 6.x installed. They all run without a problem as does Microsoft Office 2004 X.
Please be careful about installing or moving anything from an old system onto the Intel Mac unless you know it's a universal binary and compatible. Default Folder 2.0.x is not compatible. Get Default Folder 3.0 (just released.)
    Here's some more related info:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers. These versions are not universal binaries and will not work on Intel-Macs. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the only current choice is USB Overdrive. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (does not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • I am new, how I have found CF so far!

I have just finished the 2 lynda.com tutorials series for CF 8 (very well done I would recommend them to new CF users). Once you do them (and practice) you can wizz through most web tutorials you will find. Not to mention Ben Forta's phone books are suddenly easier to read. Th I am still going through Ben's et al books but together they are really helping me learn CF quickly. The community web sites are harder to find but are also proving VERY useful. They are not so many but what there is are very good.
I have to say as I am starting to build my own CF applications now that I find the language VERY WELL suited to the web. I like the easy syntax even though I know more traditional coders prefer traditional syntax. I learned basic programming in traditional syntax, but I did not find it hard at all to pick CF syntax up or was it annoying as I had been told!
At first it did freak me out all these <> things. But you get use to it and it does help to feel more web like, but coming from traditional syntax this <cfcommandhere> is weird at first.
I got the Adobe bug a few years back when I was working mainly with MS technologies.
I started to get into AI, FL and PS and even ID if you can believe it! I also knew the old DW/HTML/CSS/JavaScript set up so I started to wander into front ends and bought a Mac. I just liked it, it was fun. I forgot MS it had been boring and stuffy.
But recently with the economic mess things are in I thought I would get back into some back end again to have a wider skill base. Keep my options open kinda thing.
So I thought well I am using Adobe anyway let's see this ColdFusion rather than go back to MS or turn to PHP/ROR. You have to understand having been in front ends and graphics I have some basics of them all anyway.
I nearly did not as the web is not full of praise at all on the surface for CF. ROR is hyped but I did not like it's feel (framework is good bit CF does it too if you want to). The PHP community was too fragmented into a multitude of Open Source Projects - most of which I would never use. ASP had changed too much for me and I did not own a windows license anymore. I am using OSX and Linux distros of the day.
So I looked up the CF community. I noticed unlike the PHP/ASP/ROR etc you had kinda like father figures here (who help newbies!). So I bought the lynda.com DVD's and Bens books and go to work. 2 months later I am glad I did! I am far from finished but proud to be part of CF and feel eh rather powerful like a web magician now.
CF gives me time to do graphics and not be stuck in code all day long.
I also noticed CF was based on Java and could be scaled up potentially better than the others with Java technologies. It could also integrate with .NET technologies.
I also have to say how impressed I am with ColdFusions hook up to MySQL Server (or any popular DBMS). It was amazing how quick I could get data in and out of a database with CF! If your a database guy and want to do front ends in a browser from your databases you have to try this! I had some pretty complex schema, it did not bother CF at all, it just wrapped the SQL and was like a bridge to the my front end. Much easier than PHP or ASP.
I don't believe you need to make things difficult just because you can, and that is why I like CF if Adobe can make it easy for you they appear to do so. The amount of functions CF has is very impressive. The whole focus of the CF is for rapid web development. It does not mess about it just gets straight to that goal.
The free development license too is amazing. You can learn for free. What is all this CF costs money rubbish I was told before I started. I have found very good shared hosts with great prices and even some using open source CF really cheap. If you need a dedicated machine and can't afford CF then you can't afford a dedicated machine. So that is all rubbish that is spread by other web application server language users. Adobe needs to make new coders know this is rubbish. Some kind of Mac like  adverts would be really cool. Like Mac had a problem with misconception and stereotypes I think CF has an issue there to be resolved for new potential users. I mean I am new and I felt like this. The free academic license is great start.
CF also runs on just about anything did I mention that!
I have been using ColdFusion for only 2 months but I think this is the start of a long term relationship with another Adobe product. I just wish Adobe would clean up some of these bad stereotypes many people have about CF which nearly put me off. If I had not been so hooked on DW,PS,AI,FL,ID etc I would never have tried CF after reading the other communities web sites. It is fine to have an opinion but most of them are wrong that is the problem and have never even used CF. I never found CF coders doing the same in return, they did not comment unless they knew the other languages. That helped me be more confident joining this community.
Anyway just a perspective from a new user! If your thinking of getting into a web application server language I hope this post might help.

It's always exciting to read how someone such as yourself feels about ColdFusion. Sometimes, we as developers forget those first days, months and years learning and grappling with ColdFusion.
Just in case you didn't know about some of these ColdFusion resources, I thought I would point them out to you:
http://feeds.adobe.com/?categoryName=ColdFusion - you'll find recent posts from ColdFusion blogs that have registered with Adobe
http://www.coldfusionbloggers.org/index.cfm - another aggregator of ColdFusion blogs
http://cflib.org/ - a great place to find User Defined Functions (UDFs) created by ColdFusion developers
http://www.riaforge.org - another great resource of many free, open source ColdFusion projects, etc.
http://www.carehart.org/cf411/ - an endless list of several other ColdFusion tools, resources, etc. that will keep you busy for the next several years!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I wish you continued success in your quest for ColdFusion knowledge.

  • SU 2006-003

    Hi Earlybirds,
How is it going. Piece of Cake or ???. I'll check out BBR/ATM and see if I find anything there.

haku, try running a permissions repair from root & see if that sorts out those issues. I just ran the updates with zero problems so far. I have a bunch of startup items so I closed out of all apps, ran the update, & then upon reboot I ran a permissions repair. It found one thing but that may have been unrelated to the update. Logged out of root & back in as myself & all is well! One thing I didn't do that I suggest everyone else does before running updates is repair your permissions before you update. There is a slight chance that damaged permissions could damage an install & thus break your computer. Hope this helps anyone who is still having issues.

  • How To Move Artist Heading To Far Left

I am wondering how I can move the "Artist" heading in iTunes to the far left. I have tried left clicking and this only lists the columns available. Currently I have the song name in the far left column and I would rather have the "Artist" column there. I have tried to drag the columns and it will let me move the Artist column farther right but not to the extreme left. Any help here?
    rick5472

With iTunes for Mac, you can drag this column to the left, but not the extreme left.
You can only drag it to the column immediately to the right of "name".
It won't go any further left.
Is this not the same for iTFW?

  • Considering HTC 8X: How does everyone like it so far?

Hello! I have to decide between the unique and new HTC 8x of go with the safe and steadfast iphone. Any really good advice? People who have used HTC, why do you love or hate it?
I would really love the feedback. The internet is full of conflicting opinions and I want to speak with real users.
    Thank you!

It is true. Right now the user base for this OS is small. That is the price of being an early adopter. I will copy and paste my review of the device so far for you to read. It is definitely a great phone and OS and I am excited because if it takes off it will go very far!
Here is what I put in my review:
went from an iPhone, then 2 Android phones, and now this one. I found myself perplexed at first. The style, the actions, everything seems so different from iOS or Android. At first I was feeling a little out of place overall. After a day it started to grow on me. The little quirks, lack of apps, and differences where uncomfortable...but at the same time I felt like this was really a phone to be excited about and to give it time. After 3 days the little quirks where worth it 100%. There where tons of the RIGHT apps all the sudden. The simplicity and beauty of the overall phone is just astonishing. I find it strange that some people dislike it but I think it is beautiful, fluid, unique, and modern. The apps are less common but the more users the more the Store keeps growing. The actual apps I have noticed are almost all far more dynamic and exciting than their counterparts on other OSs. I keep seeing people freak out about not having Google support but it can hold on its own without Google. I would just say try this phone or even just the Windows Phone 8 OS in general...it can only get better and for being an early adopter you will probably get a lot out of it. They already are giving you perks like a thank you app. I would recommend this 100%
    P.S.-The design is striking.
    Screen- AMAZING
Camera- Sometimes my shots are crazy good and sometimes not...luckily it is easy to snap several at once.
Battery- Lasts FAR longer than any other phone I have had (I also keep the brightness on full to show off the screen)"
The iPhone has truly turned into a fab instead of something ground breaking so now people just go crazy and act like lemmings. They don't look around and judge everyone else haha...yes when it first came out I would say get one...now I would say why? There are much better options out there! As for bugs I see a lot of people have been having them...I have not yet. If I have they are so far and few that I don't notice (compared to my Android). I am 100% behind this OS and want to see it grow because I know once it gets the user base it will explode! They even have a site where the users VOTE on what they want changed in the OS and they intend on doing so in the next major update. I could keep going and going (I should go work for Windows Phone haha)

  • Security Update 2006-003 broke my panther!

I updated last night with the panther version of the update, and now basically every app crashes a few (less than 5) seconds after launch. Adding to that, when I start up the computer what happens is:
    - I get the apple logo and progress wheel below it
    - I get the blue background with the progress bar loagind services, etc
    - I get a black shell-like screen, almost as if I had logged in to Single user mode.
I was trying to check out the logs but the console App crashes instantly after launch.
Any Ideas on how to recover without reinstalling Mac OS?
    Thanks
    Henrique

    Henrique,
I know the weirdness of you speak regarding the boot process, shell screen, etc.... Keychain related.
Do you use a wireless network?
    If you do:
I had always had problems with Keychain since AirPort 4.2 software update.
If you can boot into safe mode then open Keychain. You'll see there is "System" and "Login" or "your user name" keychains. Select system, if you see the name of your wireless network (same name as listed under the Airport icon), unlock it (you'll be asked for the root users password), then select it and click on the delete icon. It will ask are you sure (yes), then it will ask again for roots password.
After this close keychain and reboot.
Run Command - S, then FSCK -Y (FSCK -FY if your disk is Jounaled) and it'll clear any anomalies with the disk (hopefully) then once your back up, select Keychain again and do the afore mentioned process. You'll have to do this process before you do a reboot.
Sorry for the long post. Hope it helps...

  • How reliable has Touch been so far vs. Ipod Classic?

I bought a Classic a few months ago. The first time I updated the firmware, it developed a battery draining problem when switched off (apparently common)I returned it only to find the replacement had the same problem. The next update cured the issue, but the most recent update causes the earbuds to emit an ugly static hiss when the ipod is switched off which must cause more battery drain.
I'm fed up with and seriously considering getting my money back and replacing with a Touch.
My question is: Have people found the Ipod Touch, so far to be reasonably reliable, or is it also plagued by consistent bugs and faults?

I would suggest reading this Itouch forum as these ipods have there own little quirks such as
    1 - Battery Draining Problem.
2 - Unknown crashes to desktop (your in Safari browsing then it disappears and your back at the home screen) this isn't just limited to Safari it can happen in the apps as well.
3 - Music or content you buy through the ipod touch's wifi disappears after you sync your touch to your computer and itunes.
    4 - Lost Playlists
5 - I've played a video and had the unit Reset on me back in 1.1.2
6 - Music that stops or skips for no reason
I'm sure there are more but these are the most commonly know bugs so if your looking for an error free ipod the touch isn't it.

  • I live in italy, so my credit card address is italian, even if it is an international master card. I cannot download filsm in english, as I am based italian for my account. there is no way how I could change this so far.

II want to download films from I the I tunes store. My account there is based on " Italy " as I live in Italy and my credit card has an italian address. But I want to be able to download films in English language, which Apple refuses to acxcept indicating that I have an Italian account . there is no way out of this, seemingly, unless I get myself an English speaking country credit card. Crazy ????

Due to the demands of the content owner, you can purchase only from the iTunes Store in the country in which you reside, and as proof of that residence Apple can accept only credit cards issued in and billed to that country. You can call this "crazy" if you wish, but it's not by Apple's choice.
As to the language of films available, that again is by choice of the content owners. If they won't license movies with English audio tracks or English subtitles, there's nothing the iTunes Store can do.
    Regards.

    "word or mention of updates"
It's not Apple's policy to discuss or make public update information. If anyone does know they can't say because of the NDA they've signed.
