How is the JPEG preview in a DNG used?

The thread at What is the use of preview JPEG embedded in DNG? says that the JPEG preview in a DNG file is not used by any Adobe program. The DNG Converter, version 8.4, says "JPEG previews speed display of rendered images." This statement is on the Preferences dialog.
Which is correct? Do Adobe programs such as Lightroom use the JPEG preview?
FWIW, I deleted the JPEG previews from my DNG files and I cannot detect any performance difference. I thought that Lightroom uses its own preview cache and that may be why I don't see any performance difference. Thanks.

They don't have to be full sized.
You should have also included the part I said after that: "if you'll want to make "near-raw" quality prints, or have it for future insurance etc." so, actually, in context, yes - they do!

why have it update until you're finished editing?
To be clear: I was not suggesting it should be updated before you're finished editing it. Although xmp works in just that fashion, I would never opt to have it work that way personally.
My point was that you need to (know and) remember to do it or you'll have an unedited preview, or in any case a stale one, and since there is no "preview freshness" indicator or metadata item (correct me if I'm wrong about that part, but even exiftool can not determine if preview is up2date, right?), you really have to remember, or it won't be done (or complicate workflow with additional metadata to help govern..). Me? - I use publish services to export all such copies after completion - Lightroom remembers which ones need to be exported so I don't have to.
If you use DNG, perhaps a good feature request would be a DNG preview publishing service. I mean, all Lr is really doing is exporting a jpeg but instead of storing it as a separate file, embedding it in the dng, kinda just like xmp.. - that way you just publish your DNG previews along with the rest..

  • Doese the "Compression" in DNG Converter compress the JPEG preview or the DNG file?

    In the Prederence dialog of DNG Converter, there's is an option "Compression", does it compress the JPEG preview or the DNG file?

    Since the compression is a "lossless" compression, nothing is lost except file size.  I saw a string where somebody had asked why his resulting DNG files were so huge?  The answer he received stated that he shouldn't have unclecked the "lossless compression" option from the "change preferences" menu.
    So basically, I don't know precisely what the lossless compression compresses or what the "extract" button--as opposed to the "Convert" button--does, but I can tell you that the G10 RAW files (*.cr2) get converted flawlessly to slightly smaller *.DNG files.  Enjoy!

  • Extracting JPEG preview image from DNG file

    My company is using the DNG SDK to support raw or DNG files for users of our digital asset management software. We extract a jpeg preview/thumbnail from ALL file types we support.
    My question is: how can we extract a jpeg preview from a DNG file, using the latest version of the DNG SDK?
    Currently, our software uses the SDK to read a DNG file and write a tiff file, and passes the tiff to imagemagick to get a resized jpeg we can use for a preview or thumbnail.
    When we extract the tiff from the customer's file, we get a base version of the image that does not show subsequent colour adjustments made in (eg) CS3; the customer would like to get a preview that shows (especially) the colour adjustments that have been made.
    I know the jpeg preview exists inside the DNG, I used exiftools to extract it,and it does show the colour adjustments made.
    How do I get that preview image out of the DNG file using the DNG SDK? Does the DNG SDK support that operation?
    The SDK has a lot of API, but not much documentation or samples to show usage.
    Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

    Please tell how to store jpeg images in SQL Server using NI Database Connectivity Toolset.

    You setup a field as BLOB and store the binary of the picture there. Depending on the database it can be called differently as you can see in the link, in SQL server there's even a Image datatype.

  • How do I get Preview to recognise DNG files?

    My iMac intel core duo 2 has stopped recognising DNG files. I have just updated to OS X 10.7.5 from 10.6 but when I try to open a DNG file I get a message saying 'Preview does not currently support this raw format'. This time the system is creating thumbnails, whereas before I updated the OS DNG files showed as empty (0x0 kb) but it still won't open them.

    Have you been using a DNG file converter before opening the files in Preview first?

  • How does the Java Card simulator work? (Using NetBeans)

    Hi,
    I'm using NetBeans and am trying to simulate:
    Someone powering up the card, saving a value, and powering down... And then they power it up again, get the value, and power down.
    When I edit my APDU script to do the second part, the value I entered the first time is never stored, which probably means that when I 'run' my code, my application is loaded and everything is initialized again.
    How do I edit NetBeans to not install the application every time I hit 'run'? And not to initialize the values, so that when i power it up again, I can get a value stored in a previous running of a script?
    When I use powerup, powerdown and then powerup again, NetBeans doesn't powerup the simulator the second time. So understanding the Java Card Simulator would also help... where it is, how it runs, what options it runs with, etc.

    Hi Shane,
    I have not read anywhere else that the JC3 cards are not available, thank you so much for that tip! I am not doing it for research, but I am working on this alone and will have to deploy a card later on. I will be getting all the right versions now.
    I'll ask the question then, using just the JCDK:
    If I want to save a value on the card, and then need it at a later time, how do I go about it. Do I do the following?
    (1) Install the application on the card. (I know how to do this)
    (2) Run the simulator using -o "eeprom data filename"
    (3) Save the value using the APDU calls and Java code on the card + close connection.
    Code:
    public class MyApp extends Applet {
        private static byte[] data = {0x00, 0x00, 0x00};
        // Install method, method to register, process method that can call saveData or recallData, etc
        public static void saveData()
           // code to change data
           data = {0x01, 0x01, 0x01};
        public static byte[] recallData()
           // code to return data
           return data;
    }(4) Run the simulator using -i "eeprom data filename". get the value using recallData().
    Will selecting the app not make data initialize to {0x00, 0x00, 0x00} again?
    If I know this is the correct way of going about it, then I can work towards it getting done.
    From other examples I can see that this is probably the way it should work, but my data array always returns as {0x00, 0x00, 0x00}.

    As always the online documentation (at http://tahiti.oracle.com) comes with the answer.

  • Can the JPEG be separated from the DNG?

    In PSE11 I saved a DNG and embeded a full size JPEG. Is there anyway to separate the JPEG? I really don't want to have to create another JPEG.

    I am intimately familiar with Lightroom, although even today I learned something new about it.
    Lightroom can embed or update the jpeg preview in a DNG, but can't (or won't, depending on how you look at it) read/display/import them...
    It *thinks* of the embedded jpegs as being for "outsiders" - not necessary in Lightroom, since it's primarily a raw editor - it writes them, so why would it need to read them? i.e. the embedded jpeg should look exactly like the raw does in Lightroom after editing, which granted may be different than immediately after import.
    FWIW, you are among many who would like the capability to display embedded previews, perhaps add your vote here:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom_capability_to_display_embe dded_preview
    I voted for it too - I'm just trying to explain what is probably the rationale for the current handling.
    In the mean time, there is a solution:
    RawPlusJpeg - will extract the jpeg previews from the DNGs and import them into Lightroom.
    (I'm not sure if the icc-profile is always correct, but so far, they've been looking right - please let me know if you have any color issues).

  • How avoid the hyphen in filename when saving ?

    How avoid the hyphen that illustrator puts between 2 words in the filename when saving your existing file.
    E.g.: open file "Donald Duck.ai", edit it and save it again. Illustrator puts a hyphen between : "Donald-Duck.ai".
    Is it possible to avoid this ?

    I tried a lot of settings. Set all on "none" in Settings > Output Settings, and saved that settings.
    When saving for Web the second time the same .ai, the hyphen remains away.
    But saving another .ai, settings are gone and the "Custom" settings are selected again.
    I searched the map "Output Settings", to delete "Custom" so "Default" would be selected, but "Custom" is not in that map.
    Otherwise I could copy my saved settings into the "Custom" file.
    I found this about my issue : http://okapi.sourceforge.net/Release/Filters/Help/illustrator.htm
    See "Issues with Illustrator" :
    The JPEG preview files have modified filenames. If you choose to generate the ancillary JPEG preview file when extracting, you will notice that filenames with spaces are modified to have dashes instead. For example, the JPEG of the file "My Example.ai" will be "My-Example.ai.jpeg" instead of "My Example.ai.jpg". This is because Illustrator forces filenames without spaces.

    How to convert jpeg files into Word

    Hi Eugene,
    I don't think you can convert an image to a Word document, but you could place the JPEG into a Word document using the Insert > Object command in Word.
    For other questions relating to Word, you will probably have more luck getting an answer if you post on the Microsoft forums (we can help if you're using Acrobat, or another Adobe product, but you'll find the Word experts on the Microsoft forums.)

  • The approver does not show in the approval preview after saving sh. cart

    Hi ,
    I would appreciate if anyone can reply me for fixing the problem.
    Problem: The approver does not show in the approval preview after the shopping cart is saved, however before saving the shopping cart it shows the approver in the approval preview. We are using two workflows: WS10000060 – Auto approval and WS10000276- 1 level spending limit approval.
    Details of the problem:
    The following steps specify the problem in detail , it is applicable for both the workflows “WS10000060 – Auto approval and WS10000276- 1 level spending limit approval.”
    1.     Shopping created
    2.     The approval preview shows the approver ( please see #1 in the attached document) before saving the shopping cart.
    3.     Shopping cart is saved.
    4.     After saving , Check status transaction shows the shopping cart in status “awaiting approval”
    5.     The section approval shows “ No workflow started , application error occurred”

    Hi Disha,
    I have synchronised through SWU_OBUF several times since yesterday , but still at the same place.
    In the workflow customising - The only red entry which I have is for check entries from HR control tables under Mainiatin definition env. and Mainiatin guded procedure for gateway under guided procedure (new in SRM 5.0) .The verification workflow works fine . Also I think these entries will not impact the workflow functionalhese were red even in my earlier system .
    SLG1 shows all green entries and there are no entries in RZ20.
    I have specified task TS10008126 as general task as I want anyone who is identified by SLAapprover should be able to process the workitem and as per documentation I can specify this task as standard task.
    What should I do.. , anything am I missing .
    Thanks and Best Regards

  • How is the attendence marked .

    Hi all
    How is the attendence marked when we are using the access card system in the company. The question here is do the last in and last out accessed at the company enterence in one perticular day is considered or if we take a break of few minutes or hours and come out of the company premises completely is considered in the eight hours or excluded from it. I mean to say if I enter the company at 9 a.m. and access my card at the enterence and come out at 10 a.m.after one hour using the access card. I go out of company premises to do my stuff and return at 3 p.m.. I sit in the company for 2 and half more hrs after returning and then leave the office for the day at 5.30 p.m. .So at such a situation what will be my total attaindence marked for the day..A) 8hrs 30 min OR B) 3 hrs 30 min. OR C) something else u want to suggest to me.
    Also please give some idea about the attaindence system using access.

    > Technically This depends on the configuration made from the legacy system(swipe system) to SAP system.
    To my knowledge this is just a cosmetic on the "swipe system" because on the backend it is a time stamp only without showing direction.
    What counts in the number of stamps and the time period between them on a given day.
    That is where the cinema movie or the hairdresser session comes into play => how the system reacts to only 2 or 3 time stamps per day when the first and the last are further appart than the legal requirement to have taken a break or lunch.
    We developed 2 forensic reports to analyze the data anonymously. They were known as the "bad boyz report" and the "bad girlz report". But action is not taken on them unless there is a legal reason to do so. They were used as a personell "mood-o-meter" for management information.
    One of them had the unofficial name of the "laissez faire report" because it compared certain stamps to the public holiday calendars of neighbouring countries, but I won't go into details...
