How is the 'recently played' playlist compiled?

Although it contains all the music I have played, it doesn't seem to bear any relation to when I played it. Music I last played a long time ago is near the top of the list and music I played yesterday might be near the bottom or at a random place in the middle.

Exact same issue here!!

  • In the recently played playlist how do i switch the order the songs go to in after i listen to them?

I just switched to an iphone 4s and while switching the order of my playlist switched too. when I was using just an ipod touch after i listened to a song it would become #1 in the recently played playlist (which is what I want) and the songs that i havent listened to in a while are towards the bottom on the playlist. BUT NOW the song that i just listen to becomes the last song in the playlist and the songs that I hardly listen to are on the top (which is what I dont want).
I did not switch anything in my itunes settings.
I tried making a new smart playlist but the same thing happened
It is listed how I want it in my itunes on my computer but it shows up the opposite on my iphone.

  • "Recently Played" playlist doesn't update on the iPod?

I know it used to work, on my old (3G?) iPod and some older firmware. Now it's broken.
All I want to be able to do is check my iPhone after a run, look on the device and see "what song played a couple of minutes ago?"
But the "Recently Played" playlist doesn't update on-the-fly like it used to. Instead, it's looking like I have to go back to my computer, and sync, in order to have the information sent back to the computer, and then the "Recently Played" playlist in iTunes shows what played on the iPod.
    But that stinks.
I want to see an accurate "Recently Played" on the iPod itself. Is that no longer possible? Is this a bug that we can hope Apple might address in the future... or is it a feature Apple's decided to abandon?

I've tried these workarounds but they don't seem to work (on any current iPod.)
Lots of discussion regarding Smart Playlist synching on the iPhone here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1067876
...but none of the suggested workarounds seem to working for me.
There are two issues, it seems.
    1) synching the results of a smart playlist from iTunes to the iPod
    2) updating of smart playlists, on-the-fly, on the iPod itself
#1 is working for me. It's #2 I'm having no success with, and I'm wondering if Apple just abandoned the feature when it broke.
To reiterate. Leave the computer out of the equation for a moment. All I want is a "Recently Played" smart playlist that updates on-the-fly on the iPhone, no synching required. Is this not possible?
If not, that's a step backwards. It used to work on older iPods.

  • Recently Played playlist keeps organizing by artist name

Please help!? I'd really really appreciate it. I'll keep it simple.
I have a playlist called "Recently Played" (Last played in the last week). I have it set to Live Updating, so that it can update when I'm out and about with my iPhone. I set it to Limit 500 songs, and sort by Most Recently Played. I want the songs to appear in the order I last played them.
However when a song is finished playing, I go back to the "Recently Played" playlist and instead of being at the top, being the most recent track played, it's all organized A-Z by artist.
What am I doing wrong? Or is that just how it works???

I set it to Limit 500 songs, and sort by Most Recently Played.
You don't sort by *Most Recently Played*.
That is simply how the playlist is selected.
    Select the playlist.
Go to View -> View optons.
    Tick *Last Played*.
Then click on the *Last Played* column header so the arrow at the right is pointing down. This will put the most recently played at top.

  • Recently Played Playlist Problem

    Hello Guy,
I don't know if anyone can help me but I can't figure out what is wrong with my iPod and iTunes. Basically, I've played songs in my ipod after i sync it with iTunes I do not see songs in the playlist. Another words, for some reason, iTunes do not get updated from iPod.
I was wondering what could be the problem, because Playlist is organized in following way:
    Last Played: is After: 01/01/2005
Limit to 160GB: most recently played
    Live Update
It worked before for about 6 month now and it also worked 2 days after lastest update to iTunes and iPod, however songs do not get updated, can anyone help me with a tip.
    Thank you guys

All I'm asking for is help getting my iTunes to do what it did previously. This problem started sometime over the summer. I really need help with this, and I'd rather not have to go to a Genius Bar, especially because I'm on a timetable with this record.

It does not keep track of every time you listen to a track and display them as different tracks.
Why do I want it the way it was? Because that was an accurate record, this is not.
Yes it is. It lists the most recently played tracks. If you listen to one song ten times, it will not list it ten times.
How is it accurate that if I listen to Welcome to the Jungle on Monday, Crystal Ship on Tuesday, Layla on Wednesday, Superstition on Friday, and Welcome to the Jungle on Saturday, it only lists Welcome to the Jungle once, as having been played Saturday? That's not accurate at all.
I could listen to an album of 11 songs sixty times and it will only show 11 entries in the Recently Played list.
Maybe. If it's set up to show only 11 songs, then yes.
It will show the songs based on the rules of the *Recently Played* playlist.
Select *Recently played* and right click - Edit playlist.
Mine is set up to show all song played in the last two weeks.
Mine is set up to show all songs in the last 18 months. I have listened to an album of 11 songs several times, in various orders (some songs 14 times, some 26 times) and there are only 11 items in my Recently Played list. I even made another Recently Played list to see if it was a glitch with the smart playlist, but it does the same thing. I tried making a list of "last played" to a limit of 700 songs; same result. I could listen to Shambala in August, then listen to 300 other songs, and listen to Shambala again in October, and iTunes will remove the August-dated play of Shambala and put it down as played in October, with no record of my having played it in August.

  • Ipod has stopped putting songs into the recently played list, Any ideas Y?

My ipod has stopped counting songs and also now wont put any songs into the recently played playlist and its really annoying- Any ideas on how i can sort this out? I've reset the ipod which has done nothing and i have also updated itunes but again to no avail- Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
    Lisa

I am also having this (or a similar) problem. For years I had an Auto Playlist of Podcasts with "Play Count is Zero"/Live updating rules so they were removed each time I synced my iPod after I listened to them. Recently, the Playlist has stopped updating. That is, the podcasts stay in the playlist because the play counts never update. They show in the podcast library with 0 plays no matter how many times I play them on my iPod.
I also noticed that none of songs I play have their playcounts updated in the Library after I play them on my iPod. All the syncing seems to be going one way (from the PC to the iPod and not the other way around). I picked a song with a playcount of 1 and it over and over just to test it out and no dice/no update.
Any clues? Is there a setting I am missing? I tried resetting the iPod.... And the iPod played tunes/casts are also not appearing in the Recently Played list....

  • Recently Played playlist syncing issues

    Hi Apple friends,
I've noticed some odd behaviour with my iPhone 4 since either iOS 5 or my purchase of iTunes Match (I can not recall which is accurate).
I've read a lot about playlist issues with iOS 5 but I have not heard a mention of anything similar to my situation. I usually sync the default playlists of Recently Played and Recently Added with my iPhone 4 running the latest iOS 5.0.1. I am familiar with the Recently Added bug of reversing the order of the playlist and I thin I can live pretty comfortably with that.
Recently Played however will not sync at all. iTunes says it is syncing and in fact it even names newly played files that are syncing over, but they never appear on the phone. In fact, the recently played playlist that is synced successfully at first will slowly get smaller and smaller as if it was actually keeping a count of recently played songs on my phone (which is obviously played less often) when it is supposed to be a count of recently played songs on my iMac.
Even opening up the playlist viewer of what is on my iPhone in iTunes shows the playlist as the proper size of ~200 tracks but then in reality, Music.app shows ~90 tracks at the moment. iTunes never reports an error during sync and a restore to defaults worked with the first sync but it has since gone back to this behaviour.
I had a bunch of 3G problems (Rogers, eh?) with iTunes Match, so I have long had it disabled for months now on my phone. I don't think this can be the issue, although iTunes Match did have a lot of playlist problems when I had it enabled, but many forum posts have shown me that a lot of people had those issues anyways.
I have also tried switching between USB and Wi-fi Sync with no success... Has anyone else seen a similar issue?
My Recently Played playlist uses this filter:
    1. "Last Played" is in the last "2 weeks"
    2. "Media Kind" is "Music"
    3. Match only ticked items
    4. Playlist is live updating (Could this be it?)

  • "Recently Played" playlist doesn't appear on iPod

New video iPod 60 Gig. I can see the "Recently Played" playlist on iTunes, along with the others, but it doesn't appear on the iPod itself. I only get "Recently Added", "On-The-Go" and "90s Music" on the iPod.
Is there something special that I have to do to enable these playlists on the iPod? I thought that they "just worked"; they have done on previous models that I've had.
I had the iPod set up for manual sync, but changed it today to auto-sync. Waited 2 hours for the auto-sync, but it's made no difference; still no "Recently Played" on my iPod. And yes, I have played some songs on the iPod since the auto-sync!!
    Any help appreciated

  • Recently Played Playlist sorting

    Hello
I recently bought a 6th generation ipod nano...On syncing the nano to my PC I found that the Recently Played playlist sorts in alphabetical order by artist on the ipod but sorts by most recent on itunes...Is there a way to change the sort on the nano? I have already gone into the items under the nano on itunes and changed it in there but the nano does not change.

  • Recently played playlist missing songs

Running iTunes 12.0.1 on a macbook pro running Yosemite, syncing manually to an iPhone 6 with iOS 6, Music Match turned on.
When I listen to music on the iPhone, then sync, not all the songs I listened to show up in the Recently Played playlist on the mac. It might show one song, but not the songs played after it. The list is correct on the iPhone. While I have Match turned on, all the songs at issue are on the devices, not in the cloud.

  • Recently played playlist wont sync

I updated the software on my iPod touch 3rd gen and ever since then I cannot get the Recently Played playlist to sync to the playlists folder on the iPod.  It is really frustrating since that is usually what I listen to in my car, it has all the songs that I am into right now without having to manually update the playlist all the time.  If someone can tell me what to do to get it to sync onto the playlists folder I will be forever grateful.  I have tried to manually sync it on there as well through the music tab on iTunes, but it still won't do it.  I even clicked off the Genius Playlist and it still shows up on my iPod.

If you turn off Live Updating on the playlist, it then sorts it correctly. You just have to turn it back on when you need to update the list and then turn it off again before you sync. This isn't a fix but workaround. Someone else mentioned this on the boards. I have the same issue and tried it and it works.
Don't know if it is iTunes or the iPhone.

  • 'Recently Played' playlist won't update after 2.0 upgrade

I purchased the 2.0.1 update in July. Prior to the update, I would go through play various songs, then later go to the 'Recently Played' playlist and listen to them again, shuffle, etc. Since the update, this playlist will not update at all. I must have played at least 25 different songs yesterday trying to get the playlist to update, I show one song in my 'Recently Played' playlist. Still having problem after 2.1 update a week or so ago. Anyone else having this issue?

I've tried these workarounds but they don't seem to work (on any current iPod.)

  • How do I clear the 'recently added' playlist?

How do I clear the 'recently added' playlist?

It isn't set up that way.  It is a smart playlist (right click on it to see details) which uses the "date added is last two weeks" command.  You would have to change the date added on the tracks it contains to be older than two weeks, or do some other modification to the smart playlist such as only have it display items that had not been played at all.  I don't know if there is an easy way to do that unless it is in Dougscripts.

In a stupid moment i accidently deleted the recently played folder how do i get it back or make something that does exactly the same, please help.

    Ria,
Create a smart playlist with the rule "Last Played>is in the last>1 day"
You can vary the time period to suit yourself.

i've searched for answers but they were all for windows. does anybody know how to get the recently added playlist back on a MacBook Pro?
MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   MacBookPro

The "recently added" playlist can simply be recreated by using a smart playlist with the following criteria: "Date added is after". You pick the time frame, for instance the past month, past 2 weeks, etc.
