How is this build looking?

Planned system, so far:
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/crhawkeye/saved/1AkA
System concerns:
- Any dumb bottlenecks? Anything standout? What should I spend less on, what should I spend more on? Never built before. Still in research mode.
- Motherboard going to cut it? Originally targeted this as I knew it was workable with a hackintosh setup, which I plan to install. (for this reason want to stick to intel MBs)
- Still haven't figured out my drive situation. Do plan on having to manually back up on to multiple external HDs for storage.
- If I want to overclock the 3770k . . . will my current config work?
- As I understand it... GTX 660 should support thunderbolt (if I go there) with an adapter. Eventually plan on getting a higher res monitor, not sure it will be thunderbolt.
Uses:
- Chiefly photo processing (lightroom/CS6), but some HD video work with DLSR files. (figure premiere was more demanding of hardware, so posted here)
- Will be processing canon 18mp files and Nikon d800 36mp files raw. Will be stacking multiple 36mp raw files, will be stitching multiple 36mp raw files. Figures to be my most demanding photo process.
Expectations/tolerances:
I'm coming from an old 2 core amd system that had 6gb ram. Only used cs5/lightroom... no video editing. Did OK with smaller 18mp files, but 36mp seriously stresses it. Needless to say... I'm used to slow. The biggest thing I want to improve is actual responsiveness of interface. It'd be nice to be able to write a file two minutes faster than I used to or whatnot, but that's not as big a deal. (remember, used to slow, not a pro... need adeqaute)
I don't do this for a living, but am fairly serious abou my hobby. I want something that will last me 3 years or so at least. I don't see myself upgrading past the nikon d800 in that time frame. (or acquiring anything that gives me more challenging video files)
I was all ready to get a Dell XPS 850 or something... but convinced myself that maybe this would be a better idea. So here I am.
Thanks

Ok, updated parts list. Upgraded mobo and gold rated 720 super-sup. (don't know if 720 is overkill or not -- can't hurt)
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/crhawkeye/saved/1AQc
Still trying to figure out what to do hard drive wise. Have listed a couple toishiba 7200/2TB as they were seemingly rated as well as other HDs in that class. Was going to use a couple 2TB drives in raid 1, and then a samsung pro 256 SD. At least to start.  Will add from there. Don't know if I'll be able to get away with multiple OS boots from 1 256gb SD drive or not, may be pushing it.
Think I'll skip worrying about thunderbolt for now, do believe there is an adapter that would get me there if I needed to anyway with this setup.
Looks like my price point has shifted to the 1500 range with this current config.

  • Command-TAB - How does this build the application list???

    I have a need to enumerate the applications that have "windows", "icons", whether if they are minimized to the dock or not. I need basically the list of applications that Command-TAB brings you. How do you do this programmatically?
    Everything I tried gave me everything, or just the applications that are NOT minimized. Drives me nuts. Tried CGWindowListCopyWindowInfo, NSArray *runningApps = [workspace launchedApplications], but I can't get to the filtering of the list I need - whatever Cmd-TAB brings you.
    Help?

    Hello,
    I cannot reproduce what you say using launchedApplication.
    NSArray *launchedApps = [[NSWorkspace sharedWorkspace] launchedApplications];
    for (NSDictionary *app in launchedApps)
    printf("%s is launched
    ",[[app valueForKey:@"NSApplicationName"]UTF8String]);
    This gives me all launched apps that I can see in the comd-tab shortcut. If I use runningApplications then I get much more results (any app running even in background).
    I minimized all windows of two apps: Preview and MacSoup as one is Cocoa and the other is not (well I think Preview is Cocoa): they where listed as well

  • How would this code look in LabVIEW?

    Hello,
    I am new to LabVIEW and I'm hoping that someone can tell me what the code would look like in LabVIEW if I want to do the following.....
    I am using a C dll that has the "acq_get_board_count()" function and so far I am able to get that to work, however I'm having issues with passing the array of clusters from LabVIEW to the C dll
    short count , code;
    MyStruct_board_info *board_info_list;
    count = acq_get_board_count();
    if (count){board_info_list = new MyStruct_board_info[count];
    code = acq_get_board_info(count, board_info_list);
    }else{// no interface card installed}*******************************************************************************
    my C structure looks like the following:
    struct MyStruct_board_info
    char name[32];
    short type;
    char en_first_gain;
    long first_gain_min;
    char computer_ctrl;
    char pad[3];

    One trick I found is to right-click the call library function node and select "create .c file" and examine what it will create.  I used the method that nathand used to generate the cluster using array to cluster to embed the array contents as values.  After you build the array of clusters, I think you will have to pass in element zero.  If you pass in the whole array and look at the c-code, it will still embed a 4-byte size field in the struct and this will whack your dll.
    Use adapt to type in your call library function node.  The pictured code generates the following c-code:
    /* Call Library source file */#include "extcode.h"/* Typedefs */typedef struct { double Array0;double Array1; double Array2;double Array3; double Array4;double Array5; double Array6;double Array7; double Array8;double Array9; double Array10;double Array11; double Array12;double Array13; double Array14;double Array15; double Array16;double Array17; double Array18;double Array19; double Array20;double Array21; double Array22;double Array23; double Array24;double Array25; double Array26;double Array27; double Array28;double Array29; double Array30;double Array31; } TD2;typedef struct { TD2 Array;
    uint32_t Numeric;
    } TD1;void CIELChToDE94(TD1 *arg1);

    hard to see but looks like the AMPS are as follows -30 32 35
    right now im running 18a on the 12v rail, too low for me (system is stable but i want more, im upgrading and dont like the idea of running out of power)

    I got  this Power supply(blue version)from Newegg about 3 weeks ago,and it is great addition to my system.The label reads--+3.3V=30A,+5V=32A,+12V=35A.It has 3 fans that are controlled by knob on back,also thermal speed control as load rises.I have knob set in the middle and it has reduced my case temps about 3 degrees.Also it is very quiet,unless you turn it all the way up.My system is very stable.
     Also unlike the photos, all the wires are UV sleeved ,and it comes with thumb screws to mount it.It has a quality look and feel to it.

    How will this stand up to some moderate to heavy editing? I am new to the video editing world, coming from music production. I would mostly like to make simple youtube videos for man on the street stuff and work my way up to documentaries and the like, maybe around 45 mins in length or so with lots of graphics and stock footage. Will this be a good bargain for what I am looking for? I would rather it be overkill than get invested in the process of editing only to find out my computer cant cut it...
    Thanks a lot you guys I am always learning more when I come here!

    BTW...this is something I did recently which got me on this kick. I did it on my brothers Dell. I think it was a 17R if im not mistaken. It took it pretty well and rendering was about 2 hours for this 22min clip which is longer than I would have liked. But I didnt do any color correction or get to heavy into it, I was just learning the lay of the land for Pp.
    I will mainly be using AVCHD full 1080p from my Canon Vixia M500 and 1080p from my GoPro Hero 3 Black if that makes any difference...Thanks!
    heres the clip.

  • How Do I Build This in the Portal?

    I am a new to SAP Enterprise Portal and have some little Java development experience. I have built a Java system using Sun One Studio and Tomcat that includes the following:
    1. A JSP that presents a table of customers to a sales rep, allowing them to search on customer name, city, state and/or zip code.
    2. A Java module to act as controller, receiving the JSP as input, passing the selection parms to the XML module, receiving an ArrayList of customer objects in return and then re-displaying the JSP.
    3. A Java XML module that uses the SAX classes to read through an XML file, selecting customers based on the specified criteria.
    4. A helper class that creates customer objects passed in the ArrayList.
    I have searched through SDN and have read a lot of material, and am now asking for some advice. How should this be designed and programmed so that it will execute within SAP Enterprise Portal 6.0? Is NetWeaver Developer Studio the proper tool to use?
    I can provide more information, if necessary.
    Any help you give me would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks for your reply!
    I've already down-loaded NWDS and have built two applications - one launches iNotes (Notes WebMail) and the other applies an XSLT against an XML file (an adaptation of one of the entries in SDN).
    But with regard to the design - what approach should I use? Based on what I described above (experience with JSP and servlets) creating an Abstract Portal Component doesn't seem right, and neither does creating a Dynpro app.
    Anybody else have any ideas? Is there any rough equivalent to the JSP/servlet design?
    Much appreciated!

  • How u guys build query in program

    Hey guys,
    i was wondering how u guys build queries in the program. i mean if you use String or StringBuffer. e.g.
    SELECT * FROM MY_TABLE WHERE X=someValue and Y=someValue and Z= someValue. if i use String i have to use + operator to get the values at runtime and which causes problem with performence. and when i use StringBuffer its kind of cumbersome. whats the best way you guys find for building queries at run time.
    appreciate the time you have taken to read this.
    take care and have a good day.

    Hi
    yes i'm creating the query in a loop. query is very
    big like 2 page long. basically i've to join data from
    many tables and many filter criteria entered by the
    clients which i put in the where clause. we r running
    optimizers on our application and it shows query
    building processes are making the overall performence
    slow.
    First you limit the query in some fashion (if you don' t then you might as well just give them a text box and let them type SQL.)
    In your case that might be limiting it to a query on all of the five tables.
    Second you produce a query DTO.
    A standard DTO might look like this....
           class CustomerDTO
             public String customerName;
             public double accountBalance;
      A query DTO, built to match the above, would look like this....
           class CustomerQueryDTO
             public String customerName1;
             public String customerName2;
             public OperatorType customerNameOperator;
            public double accountBalance1;
            public double accountBalance2;
            public OperatorType accountBalanceOperator;
          }And OperatorType would allow equality, between (which is why there are two parameters), greater than, etc
    You build the query string as follows
           CustomerQueryDTO query = ...
           StringBuffer b = new StringBuffer();
           b.append("select ");
           b.append(fieldList);
           b.append(" from ");
           b.append(tableList);
           b.append("where 1=1");
           if (query.customerNameOperator != null)
                b.append(" and ");
                String exp = createExpression(query.customerName1,
                                       query.customerName2,
                                       query.customerNameOperator );
                b.append(exp);
         String sql = b.toString();
    You also want to make sure that a query actually is limited by something. So the query must have at least one clause.

  • How Open source Flex looks to a mid level developer

    Here is my response to a post Matt made on a blog:
    THe whole post:
    http://blog.simb.net/2009/01/19/take-flex-back-for-the-community/
    @Matt
    1st off thanks, now my input:
    The crux of your criticism seems to be that the process that we use for decision-making is closed its certainly not how we feel
    Unfortuntly, this seems like a case of bad commuication by Adobe and the Flex team. If notable community experts get the impression of closed doors, then *certainly* the rest of us get this impression as well.
    but there has been very little participation from the community so far
    Im a solid dev, and not an expert but I can contribute in things such as testing and low level optimization; But, the Adobe open source site is a galactic disaster and discourages me from getting invloved. It has so many webpages that just go around in circles - filled with text that is verbose, this frustrates me to a great deal. As opposed to somehting straight foreward like:
    http://framework.zend.com/download/latest
    or
    http://code.google.com/p/papervision3d/
    Everything is here and easily notable. I avoid the seamingly endless pages and confusion. If I want to get to the Flex dev mailing list I have to register, then choose the lists, add the lists to my account. go though my account prefs read some directions.. then set up some other preferences..jeeeezzzz. If I want to submit a feature request I am directed to create another login for some Bug and Issue management? HUH? I thought I was submitting a featue request.
    Right on papervisions google HOME page I see Getting started > Papervision3D Mailing List.
    Next when I finially do get to Flex SVN, this trunk. is nothing like I have seen.what IS all this stuff and where do I go to learn about it? There are countless subfolders filled with things I vaguely understand and if I want to learn what it is. where do I go? Is there even a src folder?
    Here is a classic example.
    Flex trunk Read Me:
    http://opensource.adobe.com/svn/opensource/flex/sdk/trunk/README.txt
    vs.
    Zend Trunk Read me:
    http://framework.zend.com/svn/framework/standard/trunk/README.txt
    *What* is the Flex team thinking with this?
    I just spent 5 minutes or so twirling through all these SVN directories and Adobes website and I am clueless. I feel like the project is unessarily complex and disorganized - even if it isnt. This just convinced me to delete my Flex sdk bookmark on my SVN client.
    Adobe just lost one potential contributor to Flex SDK.
    We have another idea that were bouncing around that I hope to share in a week or two but wont get into now.
    Saying stuff like this is what gives people the impression of closed. Why not post these ideas the Flex team has? Even if it is stupid or incomplete
    Thats the whole point.

    Wow, thanks for your response. This is great.<br /><br />I now understand that I had a combination of prejudice and ignorance  <br />when regarding Adobe Open Source. Perhaps my ignorance on these  <br />particulars is something that other devs encounter ( that whole  <br />perception thing ).   I have chatted with people who consider the Flex  <br />SDK and Flex Builder... not the same... but fused together so much  <br />that it'd be just crazy to try and use one with out the other   When I  <br />mention using Flex without Flex Builder.... people get that glazed  <br />over look in their eyes....( FYI I'm a FDT man, but am keeping a close  <br />eye on the new Flex Builder )<br /><br />I'll use Zend as an example ( it's the best that I can come up with )  <br />but I feel like there is a difference between the open source  <br />framework and Zend Studio ( commercial software ). Anyway, I'm really  <br />excited about how you've responded to all this.  I have more ideas,  <br />but Ill sit on them and think it through and get ready for next weeks  <br />meeting.<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Alan<br /><br /><br />On Jan 23, 2009, at 1:31 AM, Matt Chotin wrote:<br /><br />> A new message was posted by Matt Chotin in<br />><br />> General Discussion --<br />>  How Open source Flex looks to a mid level developer<br />><br />> I've delayed responding to this because frankly I'm not sure what to  <br />> say for much of it.  The first thing I have to point out is that  <br />> many of the things you mention are related to Flex Builder and not  <br />> the Flex SDK, which is the part that is open source. • Flash Builder looks blurry on Macbook Pro with Retina displays

    Hello,
    Flash Builder interface looks blurry on MacBook Pro with Retina displays.
    Here is the screenshot:
    http://i.imgur.com/qMmmu.png
    Expand the image to the actual size, and notice that Flash Builder interface looks blurry.
    Please fix this issue.
    Andrey

    I was having the same issue - couldn't believe my eyes on how horrible and fuzzy Flash Builder looked on my new Macbook Pro w Retina.  Was suffering through it for the past week and just found this work around that someone figured out for Eclipse that also works on Flash Builder (guess b/c it's built on Eclipse).  Here's the link to the bug report that shows the work around (Thanks to Brad Hudgeons):
    https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=382972
    here's a cut and paste from the bug report in case the above url gets removed:
    Here's the workaround:  Do "Show package contents" on the Eclipse.app.  Edit Contents/Info.plist.  Just above  </dict> </plist>  Place this:  <key>NSHighResolutionCapable</key> <true/>
    Instead of Eclipse, show package contents on Adobe Flash Builder 4.6.app.   After you edit the Info.plist file, go back up to the Adobe Flash Builder 4.6.app and duplicate it.  It will create a Adobe Flash Builder 4.6 copy.app.  Delete your original Adobe Flash Builder 4.6 and rename the Adobe Flash Builder 4.6 copy.app to Adobe Flash Builder 4.6.app.  Then launch Flash Builder - you should see text that is much clearer.  The graphics on the ui are still blurry but at least the text should be crisp.

    You can build a form to a procedure in oracle portal that explores the queue with the option browse and prints de type message with htp package. I made it in this way and my applicattion works right. The procedure must loop the select count(msgid) from aq$[queuetable_name] times.

    Honestly? In the US (I can't speak to other countries, though I doubt it works much differently in a lot of the world) The police took your report and filed it either in their computers or, on paper. They will now not think of this again. The only time it will cross anyones mind is if, in the course of entering information into evidence about items recovered or seized at a crime scene, the serial number of an iPhone that was found/seized happens to match yours, in which case you will be contacted.
    The police in the US can and will do nothing to 'blok' the phone and it's not worth their time to try and locate it unless you know for a fact that it was stolen by a big time drug lord, master criminal, or some other such prime target and they can get a court order to track the location of the phone in order to locate this individual for your own purposes.  If they do that, they'll probably keep him under surveilance for a year or so before they act.
    Basically, the police don't care about your phone. If they find it, they will give it back to you. They are not, however, going to go looking for it. They have better things to do.
    I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.

  • PLEASE help me squeeze the price of this build!!

    Hi everyone-
    I have been working on a new computer build with heavy CS5 usage in mind, particularly After Effects and Premiere.  I have regular access to free cameras and gear, and I need an editing machine to facilitate a few personal projects  This machine will be the kernel of a home studio, but will also be used for more ordinary internet / bill-paying types of work as well.
    The help I need from you:
    The price on my build right now is $3,956.00.    Yikes!!  I need help squeezing the total pricetag of this rig to a more manageable number, hopefully under $3,000.  However, I know that I am purchasing literally everything in the system brand new, including things like monitors, speakers, the keyboard, etc, so my pricetag will be a bit higher than most builders in this forum.
    As you'll see, I just mostly went on Newegg and selected the highest-rated component that was in a comfortable price range for me.  I'm pretty sure that everything in my list will be able to play together nicely, but if there are ways that I can take steps down in price without affecting the quality of the system too drastically, those are the changes I want to know about.
    TO SUM UP:  After reading this forum for awhile, I've put together the computer I think I WANT.  But I barely know what I'm doing with this stuff!  Can you help me build the computer I NEED?

    A little about me /my needs and usage:
    I went to film school.  I'm not an editor per se, but I did a number of experimental compositing and animation projects, things that I'd like to resurrect, polish up, and put in my reel.  I also plan to use this machine to digest projects that are not yet shot.  With this machine, I'll be making the switch from Apple systems to PC.
    Formats I'd like to be working with in the future:
    -Sony SxS cards (XDCAM EX)
    -Many flavors of DV video (DVCPROHD, DV, AVCHD, HDV)
    -HDSLR footage (native H.264-based streams)
    -Maybe RED footage?
    I've never built a computer by myself before, but I have friends that have, who can help me.  The components I've selected for this build were based mostly on advice I'd read in this forum, particularly Haarm's many guides for newbies like me
    I do NOT need to be the fastest kid on the block, but I do want to build a reliable system the RIGHT WAY.  I don't want to be cheap about cooling.  For the HDD system, I want optimized data throughput that is structured in a sensible way.
    Many thanks in advance to anyone who bothers to read even 1/2 of all that stuff, let alone anyone who makes helpful suggestions on how I can bring down the price of this system.
    Talk soon!!
    -Leo K

    Thanks to everyone for their helpful advice.  I've taken all of it into account, and I was able to shave almost $700 off of the price of my build!
    This is the result of my first major revision to my list.  Does anyone see major conflicts or poor decisions here?

  • Help please - An email address that I rarely used several years ago got reset to someone else's apple ID in place of the email account they used to create their account. How can this happen?

    A friend accused me of switching an email account that I used several years ago to send them photos on Flikr (gmail) for their Apple ID - in other words of.messing with their account. I only used the gmail account to post / send them and several other people photos on a few occasions and have not used the account since. I forgot that I had it. When this friend couldn't access their iTunes account the store discovered that the email had been reset to my very old gmail address. How is this possible? Now, they are accusing me of hacking in although no purchases were made and nothing was done with the account. Still, my reputation is at stake. Could they have done it in error? It looks bad for me. Help please.

    I made up the names edward and daniel, it's not actually anyone's email address, so no need for concern.
    In practice, I'm sure you're right that I would have fewer problems with a longer, more complex email address. But in principal, the problem remains. I could sign up for the Apple ID
    1234.NoOneWillEverUseThisAddress.5678@gmail
    and someone else could sign up for the Apple ID
    1234.NoOneWillEverUseThisAddress.5678+1@gmail
    and apple would have no problem with it, even though for all intents and purposes it's the same email address. So the problem is not just the ambiguity of my, to use Dahveed's words, overly simplistic and unsophisticated, email address:
    there is a fundamental flaw in the way Apple links email addresses to accounts that allows for this ambiguity.  If they followed the same conventions that gmail did, there would be no possibility of this problem.
