How is your Macbook holding up?

Hello,
I recently got my new C2Duo Macbook. Like my old powerbook, I'm treating it like a baby heh. I just wanted to ask how people who aren't babying their Macbooks (i.e. being pretty rough with them) have found they are or are not holding up. I think I'm being way over protective with my machine heh.
Thanks

Well, let's see.
I've accidentally set mine on fire (too much cologne, I guess), I ran it over with the car that one time (whoops), I was using it on my boat last summer and it just fell over the side (sploosh!), my pet elephant stepped on it once...
Just kidding. They are fairly durable despite claims that they are cracking at various stress points (see other posts in the forum). I take pretty good care of mine although I don't keep it in a case 24/7, but I do try to keep my hands clean and I *keep beverages and food away from it*. That last one is a big one; you'll see plenty of posts here about people spilling coffee, beer, avocado juice, or whatever else on their laptops. Unacceptable.

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
If you upgraded from an earlier version of OS X such as Snow Leopard, the procedure you want is not this one. Let me know.

  • How do you know when your MacBook is infected?

Hey All. Well my question is how do you know when your MacBook is infected with a virus? I came off windows and i have norton antivirus so i have something to tell me there. But on the Mac OS you rarely get viruses and i dont have a anitvirus program, so how do you know when you have one? And what does it do?
    Thanks!

Since no ones got one that I know of it is hard to say. I figure that when the day comes that someone writes a Mac virus you will know real quick what happens. If your concerned you could use ClamXav. I use it if I download something for my wife's PC but have never found anything yet.

  • How to store your macbook?

I'm headed off to Basic Training this summer for the Army. I'll be gone for 13 weeks, and i was wondering, what's the best way to store your Macbook, for that period of time?

    Read these:
Apple - Batteries - Notebooks in which Apple specifically recommends discharging to 50% for long-term storage.
How to store batteries which states, "While lead-acid batteries must always be kept at full charge, nickel and lithium-based chemistries should be stored at 40% state-of-charge (SoC). This level minimizes age-related capacity loss, yet keeps the battery in operating condition even with some self-discharge."
Recommended storage temperature is 69ºF (15ºC).

  • How long is the Battery your Macbook Pro 15 Inch (2011)

I might get a Macbook Pro 15 Inch 2011 with the 256GB SSD and the High Resolution Screen!
How much Battery Life would I get?
    1) Going on the Internet
    2) Running Skype
    3) Playing Flight Simulator
    4) Running Word
OR just list how long your battery is on your Macbook Pro!
    Thanks!!!
(Will the higher resolution display affect my battery life)?

I was saying all of those combined on the newest MBP
if you're just worried about word, depending on the version, it might not even run on the computer.
And surprising as it may be, web browsing, depending on how you browse and what plug-ins you have installed, can be a very intensive task that takes up CPU and memory.
I found a very good discussion specifically about your issue but the site is riddled with ads so just google "MBP battery life 2011" without the quotes for further information. (it's very vast)
Long story short, bring your power brick with you if you take your computer out. There are also extra battery options that are said to help you charge your computer however, the magsafe power adapter is Apple propietary hardware that no one is able to make unless it's an Apple branded product so these batteries usually have a three prong plug (depending on where you're from) to pluginto with your power brick.

  • Disk Utilities says: Reformat your Macbook hard drive and restore. How?

I am using Time Machine which is making accurate backups of my silver Sept 2008 Macbook.
Now trying to find an approved step-by-step process to:
    1. Reformat my disc.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    3. Reinstall my Boot Camp partition
    4. Reinstall my Macbook from Time Machine + MobileMe + iPad + portable hard drive.
NOTE: I can't find my original iLife discs. I am stuck in sunny Dubai, so there is no intelligent Mac store nearby.
Is there a location that shows this? For 24 hours I have been reading posts but none take you thru on a step by step basis. Surely the manufacturer has a page which displays this?
    Thanks, in breathless anticipation, James.

    1. Reformat my disc.
o Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon. A window appears with two choices: Utilities and Continue. Click Utilities.
o You now have two other choices: Go Back and Restart. Click Restart.
o After a few minutes, the installer will display the “Install Mac OS X” screen.
o Choose Utilities > Disk Utility.
o In the list on the left, select the volume you want to erase.
o Click the Erase button near the top of the window to display erase options.
o Make sure Volume Format is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click Erase.
o In the confirmation dialog, click Erase again. Disk Utility erases the disk, which takes just a few seconds.
o Choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility. You should find yourself back on the “Install Mac OS X” screen.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
o On the “Install Mac OS X” screen, click Continue.
o The Software License Agreement appears. Click Agree to proceed with the installation.
o Select the volume you just erased.
o You will now have the opportunity to modify your selections of optional software.
    o Click Install.
    3. Reinstall my Boot Camp partition
Check out this Apple Support document: Boot Camp
    Installation & Setup Guide
    4. Reinstall my Macbook from Time Machine + MobileMe + iPad + portable hard drive.
o Make sure the Time Capsule is attached to your Mac to help expedite the restore.
o Insert your Mac OS X Install DVD and insert it in your MacBook’s optical drive.
    o. Restart your MacBook. Immediately after you hear the startup chime, press and hold the C key until you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    o. Click through the language selection screen.
o Choose Utilities > Restore System from Backup and click Continue.
o Select your Time Machine backup volume and click Continue again.
o If the Time Machine disk contains backups for more than one Mac, select the one you want from the Restore From pop-up menu. Then select the particular backup you want to restore. Click Continue.
o On the Select a Destination screen, select your MacBook's internal disk. Click Restore.
Time Machine should restore your data. When it finishes, follow the instructions to restart your computer.
