I just transfered to internal hard drives from my G4 MDD OS Tiger and my Mac Pro isn't recognizing them in the bays. Jumpers were removed for slave option. Are the older drives not compatible with the newer computer? What am I missing?

I did, and it bent a couple of the pins in the drives. I'm going to try to put them back in my G4 to see if they still work. In the meantime I went to Best Buy and talked to the Geek Squad who set me straight. I bought an SATA drive and now it's up and running with time machine.
I just wish they were a little more descriptive in the type of hard drive to install.

How large a second internal hard drive?

Keep running out of hd space - have been removing cache, etc. to try to keep my available space at least 10%, but decided to purchase a second hd. Was asked how big a one I wanted. Is there an optimum or max size I can use on my G4 (400 mhz, AGP, Model 3,3). Current hd is 20 GB divided between OS 9 (2.83) and OS X (16.25).IT IS AN SDram 100 I think.
Also - I never use the OS 9 side anymore - Can I Unpartition the current hd so that the OS 10 gets all of it and if so, how?
What is the max RAM memory I can add to this? Currently have 384 MB

The PowerMac3,3 version does not natively support drives larger than 128G from the logic board's drive controller. To benefit from a larger drive, you will need to install an PCI ATA controller card that supports larger drives and is (hopefully) bootable.
You can also try the high capacity software driver from Intech. Note the caveats, especially if this is your main boot drive. There also used to be a freeware solution called Overdrive. I provide the link but the site has been down for a long time. I have a copy but I have never tried it.

You can buy a larger drive as long as you partition it so the first partition is under 128G (like 125G) and leave the remainder unformatted.
Just so it's clear, partitioning will not give you access to the whole drive. In other words, a 250 GB drive split into two partitions will still only let you see the first 128 GB unless you use the PCI card or software solution.

Because Windows is not involved, you don't need Casper or anything else Windows-related.
Use Disk Utility to repair permissions and repair the directory on your internal hard drive. Buy an external SATA hard drive enclosure* and mount your SSD in it. Connect it to the MBP and use Disk Utility to create a single GUID partition on it, formatting the partition Mac OS Extended. Use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, it doesn't matter which, to make a bootable clone of the internal hard drive on the SSD in the external enclosure. Restart the computer holding down the Option key, and select the SSD to start up from; the purpose here is to verify that the SSD really is bootable. If that works OK, shut down, disconnect the external enclosure, and exchange the drives.
*I recommend a FireWire 800 enclosure, but they are much more expensive than USB-only enclosures, which will work OK — USB is just slow.

Just format it with Disk Utility as mentioned above. Select the new disk on the list at the left. Click the erase tab. Specify Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if not already specified and give the disk a name of your choice. Then click the erase button.
That's the simplest way to format a disk with a single partition (volum). If you want to create multiple volume (partitions) then click the Partition tab instead of Erase. You can then use then specify a number of volumes and size each volume by specifying its size or just dragging the slider in the bootm right of each partition. Give each a name as before and again Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click Apply button to create the partitions.
Since you appear to be new at this just "play" with the erase and partition settings so you can become comfortable with them. So long as you have the new disk selected on the left you can't really hurt anything since it's a new disk and no data to loose. You can always go back and erase it back to a single partition.

I own one of the first generation Mac Pros 2.66ghz quad, 2006.
I've read that you can use up to 2TB or 3TB of hard drive space inside the machine. I suspect this is understated. So what else is new?
I currently have 3 x 500 gb drives and 1 x 2TB drive in my machine.
I'd actually like to put in 3 more 2TB drives. Has anyone done this?

No, not really.
A 3TB HD can be troublesome for BootCamp use, since the Windows partition is put in the area above 2TB and the Master Boot Record (MBR) Windows still uses has trouble / is incompatible with adressing harddisk space above 2.2TB.
With some RAID setup and IIRC the Apple Raid 3TB harddisks are shown and using also only 2.2TB.
So, in essence if you stay away from BootCamp Windows and RAID 4 x 3TB also work fine in your MP.
And I had 2TB HDs in my own 2006 MP before I sold it and got me a 2010 MP.

I just got my new iMac 27" with two internal hard drives (256gb SSD and 1Tb). When I migrated from my old computer it moved everything to the SSD drive. Are there some instructions somewhere to manage this and move things to the proper drive and have the info show up in my PLACES section in finder?

When you get the 27"iMac with the SSD, OS X comes installed on the SSD; so the migration assistant would naturally move applications to the SSD, including the contents of your user folder.
If you want to copy or move files/folders to the 1TB SATA drive you can do this any time in the Finder. Just don't move the +/Applications, /Library, /System+ or /Users folders
Can't tell from your post what you want showing in Places, but you can put any folder in the Places section of the Finder - just drag the folder there and it will show up in Places. The items in Places are just references - you can add or delete them at any time; it doesn't affect the actual location of the folder(s).

How to use hard drives with the new mac pro

A few quick questions about upgrading to new Mac pro desktop
I currently have 4 internal hard drives for a total of 8T
What will the solution be to add storage to the new desktop?
I assume it will be thunderbolt options?
Lets say I wanted at least 8TB of storage to add to the computer
and attached the storage via thunderbolt will it be as fast data throughput
as the harddrives in my current computer hooked up to the external bus?
I also have a pci card running my audio plugins for Universal Audio how will those pci
cards work on the new mac pro?

To answer that, think of this as a Bottleneck problem. The overall performance is as slow as the slowest device.
At this writing typical rotating drives can produce a momentary burst at 125 MBytes/sec or 1,000 Mbits/sec. Only FireWire 800 is starting to be a limit for that -- EVERYTHING else is faster. Thunderbolt-1 is 10,000 Mbits/sec -- ten times faster.
The best SSD can produce a burst at maybe 800 MBytes/sec or 6,400 Mbits/sec. There is not a big speed difference in an SSD RAID, because the latency is already low. But the 10,000 Mbits/sec of ThunderBolt-1 is still plenty fast enough for that as well.
If ThunderBolt-2 devices really can run a single data stream at 20,000 Mbits/sec, that does not make ANYTHING faster -- it just moves the ceiling (potential bottleneck) a bit farther away.

The largest HDD that can be installed in a MBP has a 1 Tb capacity. I suggest you go to the OWC website and examine the choices available there. Any of the 2.5" HDDs will work. They cater specifically to the Mac market and and have an excellent reputation.

I live in India. I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012). My Macbook crashed 3 days ago. Apple said the internal hard disk needed replacement. They gave me two options.
1. They get a new hard drive replaced from Apple for 12000 INR (280$),
or 2. If you find it expensive, you can buy an internal hard disk from sources other than Apple and we will fix it in for you.
I have decided to go with option 2, because option 1. is not feasible for me!
