How large is Mac OS X Snow Leopard? Will it fit on a standard 4.3 GB DVD or do you need a double-layered DVD?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but Snow Leopard already is on a disk?

  • How can I find out if my mac mini running snow leopard can be upgraded to mountain lion?

I have a mac mini with sufficient ram for the mountain lion OS however, I am unable to determine if the machine was created in early 2009.  Is there a way to make sure my machine will take the upgrade without purchasing the operating system first?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • How to upgrade Mac mini server Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion

Trying to upgrade Mac mini server running Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. I downloaded Mountain Lion and about to install but a warning prompt tells me server functionality will be lost until server.app is applied. What is involved in doing that?

What's involved?  Buy and load OS X Server; that's now a Mac App Store app.
    That'll get you Server.app.
Server.app is the GUI tool that is used to manage recent versions of OS X Server, along with (increasingly) the command line management of the features that are not exposed through the Server.app tool.

  • If I have Mac OS X Snow leopard can i get the app store

How Do I get App Store

The App Store application is included in Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later and can be found in the Applications folder. If you have Mac OS X 10.5.8 as your profile indicates, though, you have Leopard, not Snow Leopard, and will need to purchase a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and upgrade your system. Snow Leopard is still available from the Apple Store.
    Regards.

  • LR 3.2, Mac Pro and Snow Leopard, can't choose catalog-storage locations now?

Sorry if this a repeat ad-nauseum posting, but I did a search and found only Win7 solutions, so here it goes:
I just got my new Mac Pro all set up, and when I went to LR 3.2's Prefs and Catalog Settings I don't see a choice any more on where I can keep all my .lrcat files.  On my G5, I used one of my external drives for all of my Lightroom catalogs and would still like to use the same folder so I don't keep loading up my system drive>Users folder where LR seems to want to put the cats.  Can we not choose the location any more?  I hope this isn't true.

Thanks, Sean.  All of my drives are Mac OS Extended (Journaled), didn't change anything since moving them from my G5 to the Mac Pro setup except take two storage drives out of my Firmtek enclosure and put them in the Mac Pro.  Those are the drives that I have my old LR Cats folder.

How do I install my old my 2010 Mac book pro/ Snow Leopard 10.6.3 program on a power Mac G5 Desktop

A PowerPC G4 or G5 can't be upgraded past 10.5.8. If you're trying to install an application and not a newer Mac OS X version, check its system requirements and use the original disk or download.

  • How can I install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on Mac OS X Tiger?

Hello. Can someone tell me how I can install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on Mac OS X Tiger? I have the disk, but when I open the installer, I get a message saying that Snow Leopard could not be installed on my computer and it could only be installed on a Intel-Based Mac. This is a PowerPC Mac, so that makes sense.
So, I'm trying to ask how to make my Mac an Intel-Based Mac so I could install Snow Leopard. Or if I can't do that, I need to know how to install Snow Leopard some other way. Please help.

Just an FYI, the Mac App Store was introduced with Mac OS X 10.6.6.    However the rest of what you say is accurate.
10.6.8 is required if you want to upgrade certain Macs beyond 10.7.5 without having to reformat the drive you are installing the operating system on and without having to install some version of 10.7 first.
One can actually install 10.7 or later if you maintain an original copy of the full installer of the operating system in question for your personal use without having to have the prerequisite operating system installed, if the hardware supported it.  But that's a discussion for another forum.
    For HFTaylor,
Consider buying a used or refurbished Mac with an Intel CPU depending on your needs.  Read this tip about the migration of data from PowerPC to Intel before proceeding:

Given what you describe you will have to upgrade Snow Leopard by downloading and installing Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Then go to the App Store and sign in with your Apple ID. Purchase and download Mountain Lion to upgrade your OS. Then purchase the latest upgrades for the iLife applications which includes iPhoto.
Or you can go on eBay, Google, or Amazon and purchase another copy of the DVD based iLife.

A Mac OS 10.6 retail DVD can be obtained for only $20. Of course that depends on where you live, but if available to you, it is a reasonable price, and will solve your current problem.
