How large of an image should I be editing?

I have been doing a lot of residential real estate photography lately and working with hdr images that are composed of several (sometimes up to 9 exposures).  The resulting tiff files are huge considering my camera is 22mp.  The resulting tiff after combined in enfuse is 5616 × 3744 and about 160mb.  My computer doesnt have a real hard time with these images but could be faster(obviously) if they were smaller.  I know its better to work on the largest image possible but this is getting a little absurd.  What is a good size to reduce my image to ?  Should I reduce it to the largest format i will be giving the client, and then start work on it?  Also what would be the prefered way to reduce the image size since i dont want to sharpen it at all(image processor?)?

If your usual format is predictable, like A4 or Letter size, then I would scale to about 1 to 2 times that size at 300 dpi and keep it RGB.  If you want a 'good' pic but much smaller, then save as jpg at the second highest quality setting.  If you are going to do this then you should archive your originals on DVD or whatever you have and work using the reduced ones with the big archive versions kept for safety.
If you are going to do this, you can do perfectly good real estate quality print with a 25 Meg psd to A4+ or a jpg of the same thing can be a couple of meg, and if handled intelligently, can be indistinguishable from the big file in offset print.  Note, I am not talking boutique printing here, but I know how it can be if you have 200 standard catalogue product shots to manipulate on modest equipment.  Your workflow needs to be good though and your adjustments and conversions need to be done right.

  • Suggestion? Running out of rearms (time) building large master Win7 image - Should I use KMS until capture?

I am building a Window 7 Ent master image containing 200+ engineering applications which will be deployed to 800+ systems. My problem is, I'm close to running out of activations and am now down to one rearm remaining. I have the option of using our
    KMS server.
Question: Is it allowed that I point my non-domain member master Windows 7 image at our KMS server to activate the OS while I continue to install software up until the point I'm ready to shut down and capture my master image?
If perform the above-mentioned procedure do I leave the master image pointing at our KMS server during the capture process? Or, do I remove the settings from the registry? After the client is joined to the domain, a GPO points all clients to our KMS server
    anyway.
Or does it not matter that I continue building my master build image, with one rearm left, leaving it prompt me that my Windows 7 Ent. copy "may be counterfeit".
Thanks for your time in advance!

    Hi,
Yes, you can point a non-domain member master Windows 7 image at your KMS server to activate the OS, it should be done by Manually Specifying a KMS Host with a command:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff793406.aspx
After the Windows 7 image is activated by the KMS, you can run this command with administrator permission to check the rearm time:  Slmgr.vbs /dlv
Details about deploying KMS clients can also be found at :

  • How large of a partition should I do for Windows XP

I am mainly using it for light gaming, the partition means how much of the hard drive is used for windows and windows-based programs/games it can use, right? What does Windows alone need, and what would you suggest? I have about 100GB total disk space left on my macbook.

    Hi Desidarius;
Since your question is primarily about Boot Camp and Windows and not Leopard, you will probably have greater success if you post over in the Boot Camp.

  • How to flatten an image to make everything editable

example. I type "HELLO" on a white background. I need to change the color on the inside of the "O" of "HELLO" but not to the rest of the white background. So, I think I need to convert "HELLO" in to create outlines but, how do i select the inside of the "O"?

Please read the manual / help. Complex letters are made up of compound paths after conversion from editable text and you need to release those to edit the individual contours. An alternate way is to select whatever object you want to color and convert it into a Live Paint item, so you can immediately fill its shapes.

Actually, not entirely true. In the case of Fuji DSLR's you would do better to double the rez in Camera Raw as that matches the interpolation that the Fuji software does in their higher quoted "effective resolutions"(it ain't real resolution mind you but it can benefit certain image types).
If you know for an absolute fact you need more resolution than the native file has, you really might want to test upsampling in Camera Raw as it has a newly tuned upsample (put in in ACR 5.2) that is an adaptive Bicubic algorithm that is either the normal Bicubic or Bicubic Smoother depending on the size–and that's something even Photoshop can't do.
But in general unless you know for a fact you need the image bigger (or have a Fuji camera) processing at the file's native size is the most efficient.

  • How to do basic corrections to large numbers of images

I have to do basic corrections to large numbers of images that will be coming in separate
batches and which need to be kept in their separate batches. I cant mix them together.
Do I create a new catalog for each batch? What should I do, if anything with collections and
what is the fastest way to make basic corrections to hundreds of images? Some of the images
are similar but many are not.
Oh, I was also wondering if Lightroom can import through FTP or if I need to download the
    images and then import them.
    Thank you!

    Hi Jim,
you need to understand what is happening or you can become very frustrated
That's for sure. I have found countless tutorials on how to do specific things and procedures in Lightroom but I wasnt able to find a macro or aerial view of what it does and how it works. Things like what is a catalog and if it mimics the file structure on the disk, if and when to have more than one catalog, where the catalog and collections files are stored and how to back them up, how to re-synchronize the catalog if you move things around with finder/explorer, etc.
I'm slowly piecing those things together by thinking and working backwards from all the more lower level tutorials. I keep thinking I want a "Missing manual" for moving from Finder and Bridge to Lightroom.
For instance, are you aware that in its default state Lightroom does not write any changes to the files?
And are you aware of how to change that? Are you aware that if you make that change there will be XMP files for every raw file that you worked on?
I knew that Lightroom doesn't  normally save changes to the image files, it basically stores a history of the adjustments in a separate file and applies them to the original, kind of like adjustment layers in photoshop dont change the background layer. I think I read that if working with a dng file the history of adjustments is saved within the dng image file but I'm not sure about that. The xmp files are the same or similar to the ones that are created in ACR, I believe.
you really need to have a good working knowledge of the program in order to use it efficiently.
I dont expect to be very efficient at first. I'm thinking of this experience as on the job training and thanks to all of the internet resources available and people like you I think I'll be able to adapt to Lightroom fairly quickly.
I looked at the videos that you linked me to. Some of them I had found previously but it was good to view them again. I do that a lot, after I do some work I look back at books or videos I had previously studied and I normally get more out of it the second time.
Is there a way that you know of to improve a few hundred images more efficiently that selecting the most similar ones for a group adjustment and doing the rest individually? I have images that are under and over exposed, tilted and with various color casts :-(
I'm thinking about going to PDN Photo Expo over the next few days and taking retouching courses with Carrie Beene. Would you happen to be going?
    Thanks,
    Bob

  • How to configure an image to specific parameters.  Needed: no more than 1200 pixels on long side   jpeg format   no less than 5 mb.  Image will be viewed on large standup screen.(original image is 22 mb)

I often have requests for images to be sent within certain parameters:  such as "no longer than 1200 pixels on longest side + jpeg format + file size no less than 5 mb."  Images will be viewed on a large stand up screen.  My original image sizes are usually around 22 mb.  When I use Export and specify 1200 pixels (quality setting is all the way over to 12), Save the file to a folder on the desktop, and then open the image in Preview, Inspector shows that the file size is now 233 KB.  How do I meet all specifications without reducing the image size so drastically?
    Thank you.

. Pardon, it reduced it down to 833 KB, not 233 (I mixed it up with another image) from the Original image of 22 MB, RAW.  Should it reduce it down that much??
That will depend on the amount of of detail in your jpeg. Given a certain pixels size and level of quality, a jpeg with many details will require a larger filesize than a jpeg with large plain regions of constant color.
Is 833 KB a big enough file size to view on a big screen?
The file size is really unimportant for the quality. What will count is the pixel size and jpeg quality you set. What is the pixel size of the large screen? That should match the pixel size you are using in your export preset. 1200 longest dimension is extremely unlikely for a large screen. Even the 17" display of my MacBook Pro has a larger pixelsize of 1920x1200.
I am sharing William Lloyd's doubts, that the specifications you were given are correct.  I'd try to export with a larger pixelsize and a high jpeg quality - perhaps 10.
If you export with 10 Megapixel  and a good jpeg quality, you will probably get a 5MB file, not that the size should matter.

  • How large of a backup drive should I get for my 500 GB MacBook Pro?

I have a MBP with a 500 GB hard drive. How large of a backup drive should I get for time machine backups? If I get a 500 GB drive will it just back up everything twice (as I have 250 used) and then delete the second backup every time it rebacks up so I will just have 2 backups? Or does time machine only backup changes every time it backs up? Thanks in advance.

OK, so I ordered a Seagate 1.5 TB external drive. That should suffice for my iMac w/ 320 GB and MBP w/ 500 GB shouldnt it?
Probably. See #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Should I just partition it 750/750? or maybe 600/600/300
Use roughly the same proportions as the data on the two Macs, adjusted for how you use them. If one changes lots of big files frequently and the other doesn't, give more space to the first one.
so I have space to put random files as well?
If you put important stuff on a 3rd partition, you can have TM back it up, too (unless the drive is attached to your Airport), but it will send you a warning reminding you that it's not a good idea to have both originals and backups on the same physical disk. You'll be much better off finding another way to back that up, perhaps archiving to CDs/DVDs.
Am I able to partition it and use it with my airport extreme?
    Officially, no: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
    and: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2426
But some folks (including me) are doing it anyway!
So if it works for you, just be aware it's technically unsupported, and you'll get little or no help from Apple if there are problems. And a future update may break it.

How do I import images from my hard drive without losing resolution? My original files after import are significantly smaller. What should I do?

Hi Keith, and all others chiming in, I do have the correct option checked in advanced settings telling iPhoto to copy the images into the library. What is a refernced library? Perhaps this is where I am getting confused. I exported my entire photo library from an old iMac5 to my external hard drive, from there I attempted to import the entire library to my new iMac. Am I overlooking an obvious and easy way to import from the hard drive to the new iMac--I dragged the entire photo pholder from the hard drive to the open window of iPhoto on the new computer. Now, I only get preview file sizes in iPhoto, unless I have my external drive open. Perhaps I need to import the original images from the hard drive in a different way...?! (This is making me feel pretty stupid.)

I am using three images for a single column of a table in Jsp.
    Any clues.
Any link for any good javascript html jsp site where i can find some good solution.

In broad way if i say i have multiple situations in mutiple tables where i need such a logic to operate in for all tables.
lets say in first time load of page by default one image will be displayed (one with sorted order for first column rest all non sorted)Now after every click to any image respective sort should get called.along with all images should get changed. Here with every function one/two images will get effect at least.
As in first if i say sort by desc then this image will change rest all will remain in unsort form.
when i move to other column and click on new image the previos will convert to unsort and new one will convert to sort by ascending. rest all will be in unsort form as it is.
Now it seems like same logic is required with two three conditions.
even for everyaction different parametrs has to be passed at differnt situations.
Any good idea if someone can suggest.
I will be very greatful for him.

  • When do you think a preloader is necessary?  How large should a swf file be to justify it?

I'm looking for opinions on preloaders.  When do you use a preloader?  How large must a swf file be before you to put a preloader in it? I am working on a small program that is 80kb in size right now and I'm not sure if I should add a preloader.

About 500kb, you should use a preloader.
Below? It depends on your file. If everything is on frame 1 , maybe it's better to use one.
You can test it  with "Simulate Download" (Control - Test Scene ->  View - Simulate Download)

  • How do I globally set in and out points on a large number of images?

As the post asks: How do I globally set in and out points on a large number of images before sending to the timeline? In AVID I can do this in the Script view. How do I do it in FCP?
    Thanks in advance

Thanks. I assumed I needed to set in and out points. I have not done an image sequence in FCP. If I have a 10 second image and a 2 second transition, but then change the duration of the transition to say 4 seconds then FCP will let me alter the transition duration?
With regards to movie clips, what happens with setting global in and out points? How would I do that?

  • How do I create new versions of a large number of images, and place them in a new location?

    Hello!
I have been using Aperture for years, and have just one small problem.  There have been many times where I want to have multiple versions of a large number of images.  I like to do a color album and B&W album for example.
Previously, I would click on all the images at one, and select new version.  The problem is this puts all of the new versions in a stack.  I then have to open all the stacks, and one by one move the new versions to a different album.  Is there any way to streamline this proccess?  When it's only 10 images, it's no problem.  When it's a few hundred (or more) its rather time consuming..
What I'm hoping for is a way to either automatically have new versions populate a separate album, or for a way to easily select all the new versions I create at one time, and simply move them with as few steps as possible to a new destination.
    Thanks for any help,
    Ricardo

    Ricardo,
in addition to Kirby's and phosgraphis's excellent suggestions, you may want to use the filters to further restrict your versions to the ones you want to access.
    For example, you mentioned
I like to do a color album and B&W album for example.
You could easily separate the color versions from the black-and-white versions by using the filter rule:
    Adjustment includes Black&white
         or
    Adjustment does not include Black&white
With the above filter setting (Add rule > Adjustment includes Black&White) only the versions with Black&White adjustment are shown in the Browers. You could do similar to separate cropped versions from uncropped ones.
