  • How long redo logs keep the transactions?

I learn Oracle and decide to do an experiment. There was a table in the test database. I deleted the file that contained this table via OS. And then I added transactions to this table.
I did 'insert' several times, then 'commit', then 'alter system switch logfile' several times, 'alter system flush buffer_cache', 'alter system flush shared_pool' and nothing happened. I could add and take data from this table successfully. Alert log showed the error only when I shutdown the database.
    SQL> shutdown immediate
ORA-01116: error in opening database file 13
    ORA-01110: data file 13: '/oracle/oradata/test5/POSTEMPTEST2.dbf'
    ORA-27041: unable to open file
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
    Additional information: 3
I understand that transactions are put in the redo logs at first, and then are transferred to the datafile on disk. I thought that command 'ALTER SYSTEM CHECKPOINT' writes transactions from redo logs to datafile on disk, but I was wrong. How long redo logs keep transactions? Is there the way to push data from redo logs to datafile?
    I use Oracle 10.2.0.1.0.

i believe this time you will see the error message during your SQLsWRONG!probably you did not read the complete post of mine before saying WRONG. You tell me, if data file containing a table is deleted at OS level (in *nix), and then you try to insert data in this table and want to retrieve the data from the table (If data is not in db cache or cache has been flushed), from where data will come? Or if you want to insert some data into this table for which new extent are required to be allocated, where it will be allocated? Will your SQLs succeed or will return some error? Either SQL should return you data (which is not possible as data file is no there to fetch the data), or SQL should fail with some error message.
I mimicked the situation on IBM AIX, following is the outcome.
    Enter user-name: system/salman
    Connected to:
    Oracle Database 11g Release 11.1.0.7.0 - 64bit Production
    SQL> create table test as select * from dba_tables;
    Table created.
    SQL> alter table test move tablespace users;
    Table altered.
    SQL> insert into test select * from dba_tables;
    2500 rows created.
    SQL> /
    2500 rows created.
    SQL> /
    2500 rows created.
    SQL> commit;
Commit complete. Now i deleted the users01.dbf file at OS level and then execute following INSERT
    SQL> insert into test select * from test;
insert into test select * from test
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01565: error in identifying file '/oracle/oradata/test/users01.dbf'

  • How long does apple keep messages in imessage?

    Hello,
Can any one tell me how long does Apple keep messages sent via iMessage in the iCloud (or anywhere else)?
    Thanks

So forceful! You have a source for that subpoena and a date I suppose? My Google-Fu must be weak because I couldn't find such a subpoena on the net.
By the way, that answer isn't a "no." "As long as necessary" can be along time since Apple cannot determine when you've read it everywhere you want to and so it's OK to delete.
I was able to pull iMessages from old deleted message threads on a new device. I also come home and sit at my Mac and my message conversation from the day on my iPhone becomes mirrored in iMessages on my computer, attachments and all, where I then copy the things I can't on the phone like ringtones and so on. Anyone can try this at home and I suggest you do. Where are these messages stored all day as I'm using my phone to be later mirrored on my home Mac?
I'm not seeing an error. I'm not just looking at unsent messages. Does it even matter anyway? Apple stores messages and their ToS states that they can do this, you agreed to it, and this policy can change at any time without your consent. Read it, thoroughly. I had to deconstruct it in a law class for a paper. I doubt you did this.
You are defensive but nobody is attacking Apple. Of course Apple stores messages for a long time. Why wouldn't they? Apple necessarily has access to the iMessage servers exactly the same as the servers that store your email or photo streams. There are legitimate business reasons! No one is saying they are abusing this access. This isn't even an issue but saying it doesn't happen betrays a lack of knowledge how this tech works.
If someone sent you a bunch of iMessages, maybe hundreds, and you haven't read them they aren't stored indefinitely until you read them on a device or on a Mac with your iCloud account? Can you say how long? No, you can't and neither can anyone outside of Apple and this is a changing number anyway.
You believe that once a message is sent that Apple immediately deletes it? Why would they when there's no requirement? You might check it from another device later on, Apple can't know if you've read it everywhere you want to. Syncing conversations across devices that are checked at different times requires some amount of storage of historical messages! Deleting a message immediately once sent would prevent this.
Do you thoroughly understand the technology involved? Do you have inside Apple knowledge of trade secrets?
I posted in this thread because I genuinely want to help the OP and you are speaking without evidence whereas my assertion is easily tested by the community in 10 minutes.

  • HT1390 How long can you keep a movie rental, once it's downloaded? Do u need wifi to watch it?

How long can you keep a movie rental, once it's downloaded? Do u need wifi to watch it?

As long as it's been fully downloaded then you shouldn't need to be online in order to watch it.
As to how long you have to watch it, from here :
You have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and 24 hours (in the US) or 48 hours (elsewhere) after you've started viewing to finish it. Once the rental period expires, the movie will disappear from your iTunes library.

I have a junk mail from February that I really want to delete but it keeps coming back after deleting it several times. It comes back in the junk mail as 'read'.

Thanks for your help in advance!

If the email provider is Google, try going to the gmail web portal, (log on from a computer or your iPad using safari), and manually delete the contents of your junk and trash.
I did this today, and the reappearing junk has not (as of yet) reappeared.  Knocking on wood.

How long should I keep it (... without "impacting the performance or the battery life")?

Closing it when it first appeared wouldn't have stopped the 'optimization' so you could have closed it any time and can do so now - in any case optimization will have long since completed.

How to reduce the size of file after delete some datas?

    Hi,
What BDB release are you using? If it's one of the latest releases, then what you are looking for is the DB->compact() method:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17076_01/html/api_reference/C/dbcompact.html
The DB->compact() method compacts Btree, Hash, and Recno access method databases, and optionally returns unused Btree, Hash or Recno database pages to the underlying filesystem. Please let me know if it helps.

Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings.  This will erase your device.  Then you will go through the setup screens again as you did when your device was new, and when given the option, select Restore from iCloud Backup.

  • 1) How to reduce MacBook boot up time?  2) Should I upgrade my 2008 MacBook to Lion?  3) How long will a 2008 MacBook last (after 4 years)?  Thanks!

I have three quick questions to ask:
    1.  My MacBook (bought in late 2008,  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM,  160 GB HD, running Leopard/10.5.8) boots up quite slow.  It can take a while to boot up and shut down.
Question:  What should I do to reduce the boot up time?
I haven't done a clean up for a while, and am a MacBook newbie (after 4 years, still) for the tools.  I think I need to remove some applications but don't know exactly how. Also I am looking for stuff like System Defragment / Compression (tools available for Windows OS) to tune the hard disk performance, if possible.
    2.  Sort of related to this slow boot-up time - should I bother to upgrade to Snow Leopard (pay $ 29.00) and then upgrade to Lion (another $ 29 ?) for some 250 new features that I am not exactly sure if I will need it (or my 2008 MacBook can handle it well)?
My friend has a 2011 MacPro which he let me use it for a while, so I think I am already using Lion,  but frankly I can't tell much difference from the user experience (am just a very average Mac user!).
Question:  Should I bother the money and the time (I heard the downloading and installation time for Lion is very long) if all I care is boot-up time?
    3.  One last question - How long can my MacBook last?   Is there a way to find out the battery life?  Any indication that my MacBook might be on the edge of its life cycle anytime soon?
I heard that typically the life for a laptop (PC or Mac) is 2 years. I am not a heavy user, and I guess that's why my MacBook is still alive after 4 years.  But should I expect that to be failing any time soon?
    Thank you!

I'll try to make it short but with your questios, might be impossible.
I own both late 2008 MB Uni with 2Ghz and a brand new late 2011 MBP 13 inch.
I have lion running on both Macbooks with no slow down or issues.
The late 2008 I upgraded to 8GB Crucial DDR3 Memory and 320GB Seagate Hard Drive. Total cost to me? $140 CDN ( i live in Canada ).
My MB Uni's battery has 1047 cycle count and I still get 3-1/2 - 4 hours of battery life depending on what applications I'm using.
As for typical life of a PC or MAC ( I own both ).  The PC's life is shorter than a MB.  I have a 4 year old Dell Vostro that I had to do a RAM upgrade so Windows 7 would run properly.
My late 08 MB had 4GB of RAM when I upgraded to Lion with no issues.  i just decided to go 8GB because it was cheap.
A 2GB MB will boot up and run faster than a 4GB PC with windows 7.
Nothing is obsolete if you can still do your stuff on your MB.
To make it boot up faster, see what's loading on startup and take them off if you don't need them.

  • How long do you keep data in PSA ? (SAP NetWeaver BI 7.0)

    Hello gurus,
According to your expertise, do you consider that PSA must keep data for a long time ? Or should it be set to empty after a short time (one month for instance).
If we consider that PSA must not keep data for a long time, how do you let your clients access old data (for instance, results of 2005 that are accessed rarely) ? Do you create another cube with old data, compressed, with aggregates ...
I have investigating archiving, but this option does not fit because we want to be able to access the data at any time, even very rarely..
Any feedback on the topic is appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Vanina

    Hi Vanina,
How long you save your PSA is depending on the load frequency and the way you load:
    e.g.
    - Daily full load: one week will be enough
    - Daily delta: depending on the possibilities to repair/ to run a new init. If a repair is difficult or a init takes a lot of time (billions of records) keep your PSA for  90 days.
Also the time the business needs to "discover" errors is important. If they run monthly reports, don't delete the PSA on weekly basis.
If you load data from flat files or other sources that cannot be easily recovered: save PSA "forever".
Cubes with a lot of data can be split into "Yearly" cubes. Run reports with only recent data direct on the cube. reports with this and last year on a multi-cube. (you can even make another multicube for all the years. Compress cubes once they are not filled anymore.
Yearly cubes can also partitioned (menu --> extra's --> DB performance --> partitioning)
    Hope this helps.
    Udo
