How long does creating a Aperture vault take?

I recently migrated my iPhoto images to Aperture. All 180gigs worth. Currently, i'm in day 2 of creating this vault of images, and it's only halfway done. Aperture shows it is still "copying masters", and if I check force quit Aperture is still responding. Is this common?
I'm on a iMac which is about 2 years old. I'm using OS 10.6.8. All my origional master images are stored on a external HD so I don't load us the internal space, and I'm copying to another external.

Hi. Thanks for the input. It's good to hear that this does take time.
My iMac has the intel core 2 duo. proc. speed 2.66GHz and 1GB DDR3.
One GB of RAM?  That's it?  I don't have time to check, but I think the minimum listed by Apple is 2, and that's not enough.  You'll need 4 to run Aperture successfully (and that's without multi-tasking), 8 to run Aperture and multitask (real-world minimums).
That alone could account for the slow performance you are seeing.

What I'm trying to do is creat a backup of all my images - some 31,000, to include all post production adjustments, metadata, etc. Reading in Aperture that if I back up with out using the vault then all the data associated with each image is not present if I need to restore my origional library.
You Library is a Finder file package.  (A package shows in Finder as a file, but is in fact many files.)  Everything Aperture knows about your Images is in the Library.  Ergo, if you back up your Library, you have backed up all the information about your Images.
The Vault is simply a differential back-up program built into Aperture.
I backup my Libraries by copying them to external drives.
Your Images' Masters, however, may not be included in either a Vault or in a back-up (or copy) of your Library -- that depends on where you have told Aperture to put them.  If you told Aperture to include them inside your Library (as Managed Masters), then they are included in the Vault (as well as in any backups or copies of the Library file).  If, otoh, you told Aperture to store them elsewhere, then neither your Vault nor any backup or copy of your Library will include them.  In that case, you are responsible for backing them up using some program other than Aperture.
To restore a lost or damaged Library, you need a copy of your Library and copies of any Masters which are not included in your Library.

I have my origional Aperture library on an external HD because of it's size, 180 gig. My iMac only has 320 gig, and the whole family uses it. Currently I only have my masters (origional library) on this one external drive, then I do backups onto dvd's.
Are your Images' Masters Managed or Referenced?  Let's clarify that, and then move forward.
Unless you reasons to do otherwise, I suggest putting all your Masters in your Library (every Image's Master will be Managed), putting that Library on one external drive, and either copy or Vault your Library to your second external drive (and storing it apart).
You didn't mention drive speed:  I have seen a welcome difference between 7200 rpm drives with large caches and 5200 rpm drives with small caches.  Some users can get by with FW400, but really FW800 should be the least you'd purchase.  If you are using a USB connection, you are going to see performance slow enough to be unusable.

  • How long does the number porting process take?

Hello Everybody! I just got my iphone (witch I LOVE it by the way) but I was wondering, how long does the number porting process take?
I ported my phone number over from SprintPCS last night at around 7pm EST and right now it's 8am EST and my Palm seems to still be working... Is this normal?
I'm still receiving incoming calls to my Palm, Text messages to my Palm, but yet I can do outgoing calls from my iphone... I'm kinda confused...
I mean I received the text on my iphone from sprint telling me: "Welcome to AT&T" as well as receiving the e-mail saying my new phone number is the same one I've had for 6 years now... Is 13 hours considered normal?
    Thanx! :-D

    QueenYvette,
If it continues to be an issue tomorrow, I would recomend calling again, and getting in contact with AT&T's porting department. They are familiar with resolving any issues that may arise.
Powering off both phones is to make sure that the old phone is not maintaining an active connection with the old carrier that can interfere with the last steps of the porting process. If at all possible its a good idea to leave the old phone powered off, and restart the new phone about once an hour so that it will resync with the towers.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

How long does a iphone 3gs restore take?
I tried to update my iphone 3gs to the new software iOS4.0.1 I guess and the phone has been restoring and i cannot see any progress.

Depends on low the battery was, but not out bounds. Mine is usually charged in about an hour or so, but I seldom let it get to near zero (and frankly don't time how long it takes).

How long does a refund on itunes take to go back on my credit card

    Welcome to the discussions!
Open iPhoto as you normally would
Click the File menu at the upper left of the screen near the Apple icon
Click +Browse Backups+ (It may take some time for backups to load if you are using wireless)
Using the scale at the right of the screen, go back to a date when you feel that you had the images on your computer. (It may take some time to do this if you are using wireless)
Navigate through iPhoto to locate your images
Click Restore at the lower right of the screen
Hopefully you will also post your question in the iPhoto forum as the experts over there frequently answer questions about this very subject and can provide far more assistance than we can here.

  • How Long Does SSIS Data Profiling Task Take?

    Greetings All,
I have been doing all my data cleansing and conforming manually (was unaware of tools available to me).  I am testing the SSIS Data Profiling Task on a table with 60,000 records.  The Data Profiling Task has taken over an hour and is still
    not finished.
    My questions are these:
How long does it generally take for this task to run?
What drives execution time for this task?
What is this object doing behind the scenes?
Are there faster tools out there for data profiling?
    Best Regards,

It depends on how much data you have in table and how many profiles you have selected for inspection.
Behind scene, it uses TempDB to create temp tables and use it further for profiling.
Below tools are available which are simillar to SSIS Data Profiling:
    DataCleaner
    DataMartist

  • How long does an upgrade to Yosemite take?

Upgrading from Mavericks, the system appears to be stuck. I'm on the screen with the apple logo and a progress bar. The bar has not moved in an hour and is about half way. This is the screen after the initial install progress screen when an estimated time was provided. There are no extra sounds from the HD indicating any processing.
how long does the process typically take?  Is there a way to stop it without totally fouling things?
    Thanks,
    Anne

I Found another thread that had a resolution. Thank you SATopWater  for your suggested steps. That appear to be working for me.
This solved my question by SATopWater on Oct 17, 2014 12:41 PM
I'm not recommending this to anyone, just thought I'd report on what worked for me:
    -  Let Yosemite upgrade sit at the white progress bar screen at 50% for 4 hours.
    -  Once I was nearly positive it wasn't doing anything like writing to the hard drive...
    -  Held power button for 10 seconds to turn computer off
    -  Waited about 10 seconds again
    -  Turned power on and held Command R  (It took about 3 minutes to boot)
    -  Clicked on WI-Fi symbol on upper right and turned off Wi-Fi
    -  Selected restart from the System menu option
    -  Computer rebooted and finished the upgrade
I have since rebooted (twice to be sure) and run a few things and all seems fine at this point.

  • How long does FCPX 10.0.6 takes to transcode & share a file ?

    Hi there,
Can I know in 10.0.6, for a 5 mins simple video in the timelinw with just video & a few text, how long does 10.0.6 takes to transcode the file after you click share ?
As compared to 10.0.4, I find the new 10.0.6 takes so much longer.
Is that the experience for everyone or is it just me ?
    Thanks

    Ian R. Brown wrote:
It all depends what the  video format in the timeline is and what you are converting it to.
The particular hard drive it is on or being sent to with relation to the app etc. can also make a significant difference.
    Thanks Ian,
The video format in both 10.0.4 and 10.0.6 are the same. The type & location of the drive are also the same.
Do you find that transcoding it in 10.0.6 took much longer ?
Also, after the transcoding has finished, how do we find out the time it has taken ? (i know if we sent to compressor, it has a statistic of it. But if we were to transcode straight from FCPX, can we find out how long it took ?)
    Thanks

  • HT1600 how long does the apple tv update take

How long does it take to download the update for Apple tv?  It has already been 2 hours and it has not moved.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't do much else besides pull the plug. If it causes further problems you should be able to restore as below:
Get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
On the other hand you may be able to simply start the update again. If however the update continues to fail, you should try the restore routine above.

  • How long does fixing an iPhone 5 take?

I had to send in my iPhone 5 to Apple (I live nowhere near an Apple Store), to get the Sleep/Wake button repaired. I recieved the box and sent it out Thursday the 8th, they said they recieved it Friday the 9th. It is now Sunday the11th and the Support websight says its still being diagnosed. How long does this take if they are only supposed to be fixing the button?

    KiwiV wrote:
My problem is that, theyve already had it for 3 days. I called on Friday and they still havnt even started on the repair yet.
If they received it on the 9th, 4-6 busines days would put it between this coming Thursday and next Monday to be completed.

Let me try this again. My question is......  "How long does the erase settings and content process take?"  I have an iPhone 4s 16gig.
Its been on the screen black screen with  rotating circle for about an hour already.
Hope this doesnt get my  post erased again.

You're over 2 months late on this reply, and also wrong. Erase All Content and Settings on any phone from the 3GS forward simply writes over the encryption key, thus scrambling all of the data on the phone. It takes under 10 seconds. On the iPhone Classic and 3G it could take several hours, but not phones with hardware encryption line the 3GS, 4, 4S and 5.

  • How long does restoring from time machine take?

I restarted my MPB running Lion while holding down cmd-r.
Using the restore utility I chose a time machine backup and selected to restore from it.
This was about three hours ago. Since then there has been a window on my screen saying 'restoring "macintosh HD" on the disk "macintosh HD"' and 'erasing the restore disk "macintosh HD".
There is a moving stripy activity bar, but it's not of the type that actually shows progress, just moving stripes from left to right.
I have no idea if anything is actually happening. The 'go back' and 'stop' buttons are greyed out.
For all I know it is just taking a long time to erase the disk, but then again maybe something has gone wrong.
I  am afraid to reboot because maybe half the disk has been erased!
Also, I have the whole-disk file vault encryption enabled, so maybe this slows things down.
Anybody know if this behaviour is normal? How long do these restores take? Should I just restart and try again?
    Thanks!
    Tom

    Update:
The laptop went to sleep. When I moved the mouse to wake it the screen froze.
I restarted and the computer booted straight to the Mac OSX utilities screen. My HD is no longer recognised as a boot disk.
    Going to try restoring again.

  • How long does the warranty repair service take?

    Hi,
I bought my laptop on 2007-07-06 and few days later I have noticed that my RTC battery isn working properly, so I have returned my laptop to Toshiba on 25.07.2007. On the Toshiba Service Status site http://weblord.toshiba-tro.de/WeblordTracking/default.aspx i see that they received it on 27.07.2007.
The next entry, which is 30.07.2007, says that the repair is in progress and nothing else. So, does anybody know how long can take a battery change, and how long do I have to wait for my laptop?

    Hi Leszek
As you know it is not easy to say how long time the repair will take and I presume it is not the same by every authorized service partner. Some of them do this faster and some need more time because they have no parts for replacement.
If you are now in PL (Poland I suppose) it will take a little bit more time as usual.
BTW: why you didnt try to load BIOS battery as described in Users Manuals? If I am remembering well the loading time is about 48 hours. If you want you can check it in Users Manuals.

  • How long does a HANA instance startup take?

In a previous thread Lars Breddemann wrote:
Data stored in row-store tables will be loaded into the main memory immediately on instance startup.
Data stored in column-store tables will be loaded upon first access, except when it has been specified that the table should also be loaded during startup.
Even if the persistent storage is located on SSDs, doesn't that take a really long time to start a large HANA database?
Is there already some rule of thumb about how long it takes in real life to start a large HANA database?
Or can you simply say that HANA doesn't impose a bottleneck (or other significant delays) but startup primarily depends on reading the data from persistent storage and thats it.
In my imagination, many HANA customers would want to load almost eveything from column storage during instance startup. So imagine a 1 TB HANA database reading 1 TB from SSDs and also creating indexes for column storage during instance startup. What is the order of magnitude for instance startup: Seconds, minutes or hours?
    Regards,
    Mark

    Hello Mark,
here's some more background: Tables are either in row or in column store. Row store tables are loaded into memory during startup. Column store tables are set as a default to be loaded on demand i.e. the system loads columns when necessary. You can change the preload behaviour for column tables using ALTER TABLE (see http://service.sap.com/hana > SQL Reference).
Since most data will be stored in column tables, actual startup time is indeed pretty quick. If you want to avoid a performance hit on first data selections, you could create a simple SQL script that executed a LOAD statement your most critical tables and run it once after start up and when it fits best to your requirements.
